Dwars Door Vlaanderen
This is it, the start of the cobbled season! We're in luck today, the field is relatively weak, compared to other years.
Nearly 200km, it'll be a long day. Weather predictions aren't looking good, what means it's great for me! Our biggest competitors today are Sep Vanmarcke and Marcus Burghardt. Let's see if we can get Roelandts the win today!
Debusschere opened the day by attacking!
Some other riders completed the breakaway group and I heard that Mourey was one of them. I still remember him from my cyclo-cross days. He's a pretty good one.
Roelandts and I spent most of the day together, discussing the race. He's a real bright team leader and he'll be perfect to win a cobbled classic on tactics. He realized he misses the absolute talent to ride like someone like Boonen, but he has determination and the brains to win a classic, that's for sure!
BMC dictated the pace and, honestly, it was constantly paying attention, not to lose touch. So we nestled in the head of the peloton, where we were safest.
Sep Vanmarcke blew his tire on the worst possible moment! You never want to win a race this way but we were relieved anyway, one less competitor!
The unavoidable happened, the peloton ripped in pieces. We didn't miss the split, Roelandts, Willems and myself.
But then we were surprised. We let ourselves get caught off guard and Burghardt got away!
Then it was up to me to do the dirty work. I took Roelandts on my wheel and started riding. But I didn't get much closer. He was just so strong. On top of it, Vanmarcke had organized a brilliant chase and rejoined our group.
It was time for the sprint for the second place. I launched Roelandts pretty early.
Burghardt took a nice victory, and Roelandts came in second.
But the race wasn't over yet. There was still a surprise! I was able to rest for a few second and then fight a final battle with Quinziato.
And, to my surprise, I beat him to the line! My first podium in a one-day race!!
This is an amazing result, partly thanks to the weak field, but still, I did it myself! I fulfilled my role as a helper and was able to sprint for personal glory, too. Things couldn't have gone better. I'm very happy now, and I'll start at my first World Tour Classic (E3) with lots of confidence!

Nice result for the Zombie! The field was rather weak, but a 3rd in DdV is awesome!
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Really nice result for Stijn beating the likes of Vanmarcke, Hincapie and Quinziato and finishing on the podium! |

Ollfardh: Yeah it wasn't the field I expected. But 3rd is a great place for a neopro, no matter what field
PCM rulezz: Thanks. Roelandts came close a lot already, but so far no win! 2nd in the Omloop, 2nd here...
rogvi97: Hopefully that next time is in E3
juszta: Thanks! Hincapie and Quinziato had wasted a lot of energy spending the entire day in the chase, while Vanmarcke didn't even sprint properly after his impressive come back
JuanMotr: Well someone has to be second, right?
sutty68: Thanks a lot! It's an amazing result for him and it'll be a good motivation for the classics.
More of this probably later today, or tomorrow. (some family obligations on this day, you know) |

I have to admit that I didn't follow your earlier stories that closely, mostly because they progressed so fast (Tale of Two) or because I was almost completely inactive afterwards (the following stories). But I recovered some interest in cycling and PCM now and just read this one - and I won't make the same mistake again High quality reports, interesting style and nice riders. I like it a lot. Keep it up!

fernando97: Thanks a lot
Stromeon: I hope he does, but the competition will be a killer there!
sutty68: Normally they should peak for Roubaix, let's hope that works out
cunego59:Thanks a lot! I'm happy you're following and I hope you'll keep enjoying it!
FreitasPCM: Yeah, His second 2nd place this year, time for a victory now
Well, E3 is raced, despite an immensely lagging computer, which made me back-up my savegame just in case, got a feeling this computer is going to be crashing out on me pretty soon. So I did the race and got the screenshots but I'm having some trouble getting the report done now, so it's coming later. Thanks! |

E3 - Harelbeke
The time has finally come for my first Classic!
E3 is a fairly new World Tour race but is not to be underestimated. I will try my best to protect Roelandts and try to fight for a decent finish myself.
We were unable to get someone in the breakaway, but that wasn't too bad, since it wasn't up to us to do the chase anyway.
The Oude Kwaremont was the place where the race really started for us. I was placed pretty up front, but had a hard time keeping that position on the Kwaremont itself?
As expected, the peloton ripped up afterwards. I missed the front split, but got stuck in a group behind.
Strong riders like Boom and Devolder took advantage of the chaotic split to get away.
Roelandts did an excellent job of staying with Boonen.
The group I was in was constantly changing. Cancellara and Ballan broke away and I needed some time to get my senses back.
Eventually, I decided to go looking for another group myself.
Unfortunately, I got stuck between two groups. With 20km left to go, the group in front of me had 3 minutes on me, and growing, while the group behind me was already more than 2 minutes away. I was in no-man's land.
Devolder made his move unexpectedly and created a big enough gap to take the win!
I finished alone, on a very promising 17th place!

Well, this was a great race for me. I hope I can race like this in every coming classic! I clearly wasn't strong enough to take on the legends like Cancellara, but I definitely was stronger than some more than decent classic riders like Scheirlinckx, Steegmans, Amorison, Vanmarcke...
In two days there's Gent-Wevelgem, and I, for one, can't wait!
