Team Saxo - Tinkoff [Giro d'Italia]
Spilak23
As you have probably understood by now, my motivation has been really low these last couple of weeks. I want to get back to my story though so decided to simulate the last stages from Romandie so I can start the Giro. I hope this gets me but also the readers back on track with this story!

The Route

images2.gazzettaobjects.it/static_images/ciclismo/giroditalia/2012/planimetria_generale.jpg

After last year's incredibly hard Giro, the organisators were replaced and came with a much easier version. That doesn't mean that the Giro will be easy though, especially the last week is very hard including the finish on the Stelvio on the penultimate stage. Special is ofcourse the start in Denmark. The peloton will start with a prologue and two flat stages in Denmark before flying over to Italy. Overal, the route will be exciting for everyone. Sprinters, attackers, punchers and climbers should all get their chances and that should lead to a great Giro.

Next up will be a presentation from the Saxo Bank - Tinkoff Bank team for the Giro.

Giro d'Italia #2

Roman Kreuziger

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo625.jpg

Roman is our leader for the Giro. He is a strong all round rider for GT's but is probably just not strong enough to compete with the best for the win. A podium would be great though and we will do everything we can to achieve that.

Daniel Navarro

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo626.jpg

Navarro has always been Contador's numer one lieutenant. With Contador suspended he will try to help Kreuziger as much as he can. Let's see if he is also one of the best mountain domestiques for another leader.

Bruno Pires

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo627.jpg

Bruno Pires is a strong rider who should be able to help Kreuziger in the mountains while also playing a role on the stage 4 TTT.

Jesus Hernandez

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo628.jpg

Hernandez is very comparable to Navarro. He also was one of Contador's lieutenants and knows how to work for a GT leader.

Rafal Majka

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo628.jpg

Majka is only 22 years old but is starting to show himself as a very promising climber. We hope he can do a lot of great work in the mountains for the team leader.

Takashi Miyazawa

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo629.jpg

Miyazawa is the only bad climber in our team. He is mainly here to get our sponsors some exposure be being Japanese and going in some breaks.

Christopher Juul-Jensen

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo630.jpg

Juul-Jensen is also still very young. Here is here mainly to get some experience but I'm sure he will also be able to help his teammates on all sorts of terrain.

Mads Christensen

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo631.jpg

Christensen is a very good helper who should be able to do some work on all terrains. Early on on tougher stages, flat stages and also in the TTT.

Manuele Boaro

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo632.jpg

Boaro is the Italian in our Giro squad. His main goal is to get a good result in the opening prologue. He will also play an important role on the TTT while being a teammate in the other stages.

Next up will be a presentation from the startlist and the favourites.

A lot of big names decided to come to Denmark for the start of the Giro.

Cadel Evans

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo633.jpg

Evans is last year's Tour de France winner and is one of the best GT riders in the world. If his form his good, he will certainly compete for the highest spot on the podium.

Chris Froome

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo634.jpg

After finishing 2nd in the Vuelta last year, Froome comes to the Giro for his first GT win. He combines good climbing legs with a very strong timetrial.

Igor Anton

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo635.jpg

The Basque is one of the best climbers in the world but mostly lacks consistency and timetrial skills to finish on top in a GT. Can he change that this year?

Jurgen Van den Broeck

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo636.jpg

Van den Broeck first came on the scene as a stage racer in the Giro 2008. He has mainly focused on the Tour since then but can he win his first GT in the country were it all started?

Ivan Basso

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo637.jpg

Basso has already won the Giro in 2006 and 2010. Can he win for a third time or does his older age make him weaker?

Vincenzo Nibali

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo638.jpg

Nibali has already won the Vuelta in 2010. He finished 3rd last year but is this the year he finally takes the win in his home country? He will have to work together with his teammate Basso.

Ryder Hesjedal

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo639.jpg

Hesjedal has only one good GC result in the Tour 2010 but is known for having very good recuperation and will be strong in the very tough last week.

Michele Scarponi

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo640.jpg

Scarponi finished second last year. He should fight for the podium again this year but hasn't really shown GT winning climbing form yet.

Domenico Pozzovivo

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo641.jpg

Pozzovivo is a strong Italian climber. He will certainly not compete for the podium but a stage win on a strong day is always possible.

Damiano Cunego

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo642.jpg

Cunego won the Giro in 2003 but never showed that form later. He showed his good form by winning Romandie and could always get some stage wins on the shorter hills.

Thomas De Gendt

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo643.jpg

De Gendt has no results in a GT yet but was very strong in the last week of last year's TdF. He is probably the best guy recovering in the whole peloton.

Alejandro Valverde

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo644.jpg

Coming back from a suspension, Valverde showed that he isn't in his old form yet. Maybe racing 3 weeks in a row can bring him back to that level?

Tom Boonen

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo645.jpg

After a great spring winning Vlaanderen and Roubaix, Boonen starts his first Giro hoping to get a stage win in a sprint.

Peter Sagan

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo646.jpg

Peter Sagan is cycling's new wonderboy. Equally good uphill as in a sprint, he will certainly get his chances for a stage win here.

Matthew Goss

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo647.jpg

Goss is a sprinter certainly as fast as Sagan and Boonen. He also has a very strong leadout train from his GreenEdge team behind him.

sutty68
Lets hope that Kreuziger can bring back the Maglia Rosa Smile

Spilak23
Winning the Maglia rosa is probably impossible, Evans, Froome, Anton, Basso and Nibali are all better climbers as Kreuziger. We would already be very happy with a podium spot.

The Giro starts in Denmark with a 7 km prologue around Herning. Favourites are prologue specialists like Boom, Sagan and Thomas. The favourites will do their best but won't lose much time on each other. Kreuziger wants to do as best as possible while Boaro wants to finish in the stage top 10.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo650.jpg

Peter Sagan is not only a sprinter or a puncher but his explosiveness also makes him a very strong rider in short prologues. He sets a strong time early on.
11'38
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo651.jpg

Geraint Thomas is a very strong rider in the pursuit on the track. That also makes him a fast guy in prologues. His time today is quite dissapointing.
11'54
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo652.jpg

Tejay Van Garderen is a strong timetrialist who also does well on shorter routes. He sets the same time as Sagan but is placed behind him.
11'38
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo653.jpg

Gustav Erik - Larsson is someone from who you always expect a decent showing on a TT bike. He prefers longer courses but does not bad today.
11'40
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo654.jpg

Pinotti is always a men to look out for in timetrials during the Giro. He also prefers longer routes and that shows in his time.
11'51
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo655.jpg

Lars Boom is one of the most explosive prologue riders in the world. His time is quite bad showing his form is clearly not good enough yet.
11'51
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo656.jpg

Next to sprinting and cobbling, Tom Boonen can also ride very fast over a short timetrial course. He shows he is losing some form after the classics with an average time.
11'51
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo657.jpg

Manuele Boaro's main goal for the Giro was to finish inside the top 10 on the opening prologue. He doesn't do great though and loses 12 seconds on Sagan.
11'50
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo658.jpg

Roman Kreuziger's quest for the podium starts here. His start isn't great though losing some time on most other candidates.
11'53
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo660.jpg

Chris Froome prefers longer timetrials so he can't use this stage to take some time on his opponents.
11'49
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo661.jpg

Australian champion Cadel Evans shows his form is good enough to win the Giro by posting a strong time in the prologue.
11'39
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo662.jpg

But none of them was strong enough to take the win today. Andriy Grivko was so fast he surprised the camera's and takes an unexpected victory.

Well, I think it's safe to say that we had expected a little more from this prologue. Both Boaro and Kreuziger should have the talent to do a little better than their results.

Really good results in past few months. Enjoying this story a lot. Well done Spilak Wink Liquigas, BMC and Sky have very strong teams overall, should be a great race.

And that's the magic of prologues on extreme. You can't do well in them usually, as you can't really do ''anything'' in them and with the AI boost in stats on extreme, well that makes it tough. So overall it's not a bad start Wink

Thanks guys! Giro should be a great race with the strong startlist. And luckily prologues are too short to make real differences.

The first road stage in the Giro is a flat route in Denmark. Looks perfect for the sprinters but watch out for the wind.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo666.jpg

A break of 8 formed early. Boaro is in it for our team after a quite disappointing result from him in yesterday's prologue. He is accompanied by Modolo (Colnago), Bandiera (Omega Pharma), Selig (Katusha), Leukemans (Vacansoleil), Bérard (AG2R), Leezer (Rabobank) and Nizzolo (Radioshack).
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo667.jpg

The first mountain sprint of the Giro is the onlyone this stage so Boaro hoped he could win the sprint and get on the podium for the mountain's jersey. Leukemans is clearly stronger though and is the Giro's first king of the mountains.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo668.jpg

The Astana team from leader Grivko recieves help from both Lampre and Orica - GreenEdge to bring back the break so the chances for the break to stay away look slim.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo669.jpg

The wind became stronger near the end of the of the stage and the pack splitted in echelons. race leader Grivko was near the front all stage but somehow got stuck in a second group. Other big name in this group is Froome.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo670.jpg

Coming under the 5 km to go kite, Leukemans, who attacked away from his companions to continue solo, is almost caught. Sprinttrains are getting formed while Kreuziger is the only Saxo rider who can keep up in the first group.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo671.jpg

Lampre has a strong train with two domestiques leading out Petacchi. Sagan has only Oss remaining in front of him but Oss has to fight with Guardini and Bozic for the wheel of Petacchi.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo672.jpg

Oss lost the fight and lost a lot of terrain on the Lampre train. Petacchi, Guardini and Bozic can start their train with a good advantage over the others who will have to come very strong if they want to finish in the top 3.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo673.jpg

Petacchi faded near the end so Guardini and Bozic jumped around him to fight for the win. Bozic was just a bit stronger to make it a second stage win for Astana. Petacchi completes the podium in front of an upcoming Sagan.

Good job by Kreuziger finishing in the first group. Not good to see though that he had no teammates around him.

The last stage in Denmark before the flight to Italy. It's flat again so the sprinters will go for it again. Less wind is expected so it will probably be a calmer day.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo678.jpg

Our Japanese star Miyazawa made it into the break today. He is accompanied by 10 others: Thomas, Dowsett (Sky), Gatto, Hulsmans (Farnese Vini), Rasch (FdJ), Bol (Rabobank), Chérel (AG2R), Terpstra (Omega Pharma), Paolini (Katusha) and Willems (Lotto).
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo679.jpg

Astana controlled the peloton in the first part of the stage but later on, Lampre, Orica and Liquigas took over chasing hard for their sprinters.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo680.jpg

Terpstra and Gatto weren't quite happy with how the break coöpperated so they attacked away from them. They would get brought back though by the others.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo681.jpg

10 kms to go and the break is almost caught but Farnese Vini still has a plan. Gatto and Hulsmans attack together hoping to stay away from the nearing pack.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo683.jpg

Mass crash in the pack with 5 kms to go. It's not clear who or what caused it but the crash happened near the front so almost everyone is down including Kreuziger.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo682.jpg

Only around ten riders make it trough actually. Mostly domestiques like Juul-Jensen. But Petacchi is here with some teammates and also Valverde made it trough. Gatto and Hulsmans were just caught when the crash happened and are still in the front group.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo684.jpg

Knowing they all have teammates who were held up by the crash, the riders who made it trough decide to sit up. There are only 3 kms to go in the stage so this a really strange end.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo685.jpg

Everyone is back together when approaching the red kite for the final kilometer. It's Oss who jumps away for the stage win. Goss and Guardini are trying to jump in his slipstream.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo686.jpg

Daniel Oss holds off a surging Petacchi to take the win. Petacchi could have easily taken the win here if he didn't wait but it's a sign of great sportmanship. Just like Valverde. Modolo, Pagani, Uran, Posthuma, Verdugo, Ventoso, Nocentini and Busche were unlucky and had to abandon with injuries.

What a strange end to the stage. Afterall everyone finished together but Kreuziger went down in the crash. At first sight, he doesn't look injured and can continue the Giro.

The Giro is finally in Italy! And with what a stage. The team time trial will be a good test for the GC contenders to see who has a strong team around him. We hope we can finish in the top 10 while losing less then a minute on the winner.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo689.jpg

We had to start early but that didn't stop us. Everything did their job and especially Boaro bounced back after a weaker prologue. We rode a strong time beating the previous best times.
44'16
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo690.jpg

The Astana team from race leader Bozic was tipped as one of the favourites for the win today. They rode quite disappointing though and lost the pink jersey.
44'46
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo691.jpg

The BMC team has some very strong timetrialist in their squad. Evans, Van Garderen, Pinotti and Quinziato are strong names to pull a team on a route like this. Their time is just a bit weaker than ours though.
44'21
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo692.jpg

Orica - GreenEdge are a team known for their performances in TTT's. They don't have their strongest squad here and that shows in their time.
44'46
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo694.jpg

Team Sky has some very strong timetrialist in their squad and are reckoned as one of the favourites today. Froome, Dowsett, Pate and Thomas give everything in their power but cannot beat our time.
44'20
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo695.jpg

Liquigas has a strong team around Basso, Nibali and Sagan. They are known for their good results in TTT's and show that today. They are the first team beating our time.
44'00
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo696.jpg

Garmin - Sharp is always considered top favourite for a team time trial but their line up for this Giro lacks some of their stronger timetrialists. Their time is still strong though.
44'08
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo697.jpg

Team Katusha doesn't really have any notable timetrialists in their squad for the Giro so not much was expected from them. They surprise a lot of people though setting a strong time.
44'12
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo698.jpg

Movistar has a very strong line up around Valverde with riders like Bruseghin, Kiryienka, Karpets and Gutierrez. They were considered top favourites and crush all earlier times to take the win.

Very strong performances from the team finishing 5th between the specialists. Kreuziger lost time to Valverde, Nibali, Basso and Hesjedal but takes time on all his other opponents which is very good.

Now that was a strange end of the 3rd stage.....

Good TTT for the team. Stage 3 is indeed strange and bit sad to see some names abandon, but hopefully Kreuziger came unscathed with none hidden injuries.

Thanks guys, I think it was probably better that the riders in front waited for the others in the 3rd stage.

The stage after the TTT is flat again before some upcoming hilly stages. The sprinters probably will go for it again so don't expect to see us much.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo701.jpg

14 riders in the BotD including our Boaro. Other riders are Nizzolo (Radioshack), Thomas (Sky), Gatto (Farnese Vini), Paolini (Katusha), Gavazzi (Astana), Roux (FdJ) and Leukemans (Vacansoleil).
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo702.jpg

The work in the pack was mainly done by Movistar domestiques for race leader Visconti but they recieved some help from Orica and Garmin for their sprinters.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo703.jpg

Passing the only KoM sprint, Boaro gave everyting but was just edged out by Gatto who overtakes Leukemans as the king of the mountain.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo704.jpg

Entering the last 10 km of the stage, the pack, led by Orica and Garmin catches the 14 escapees so we will see another mass sprint to decide the stage winner.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo705.jpg

But another big crash occurs at the back of the peloton. Around 70 riders are held up including Cunego, Pozzovivo, De Gendt and race leader Visconti. Pinotti is one of three riders who have to abandon.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo706.jpg

The crash doesn't stop the sprint preparations as both Orica and Garmin come to the front with their leadout trains. Howard and Dean are leading out Goss while Farrar has only Fernandez in front of him.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo707.jpg

Nobody can dominate and the jump to the line will be very important as Petacchi, Guardini and Goss are on an equal line while Chicchi, Sagan and Farrar are not much behind.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo708.jpg

Petacchi has the strongest jump and can celebrate a victory. He wins just in front of Goss and Guardini. The crashed riders finish more than 4 minutes later.

The first hilly stage in the Giro isn't very hard. That's why no gaps between the favourites are expected. We will probably see a sprint from a smaller group, something for Sagan?

9 escapees today without any Saxo riders. The names are Gatto (Farnese Vini), Pate (Sky), Tjallingi (Rabobank), Geslin (FdJ), Bazayev (Astana), Didier (Radioshack), Cherel (AG2R), Santambrogio (BMC) and Leukemans (Vacansoleil).

Nibali crashed early but could easily come back to the peloton. Surpisingly, none of his teammates dropped back to help him.

King of the Mountains Gatto took more points at all three mountain sprints and growed his lead in the competition.

Sensing that no team in the pack was willing to do the work to bring back the break, Gatto upped the pace on one of the smaller hills and dropped six riders. Only Leukemans and Pate were able to follow.

Bad news in the pack, Kreuziger has troubles staying in the 50 men strong peloton. He clearly is hurt after the crash on the second stage. His teammates are doing everything to make sure he doesn't lose contact.

Gatto accerated over the last hill and easily dropped both Leukemans and Pate. He can easily cruise to the stage win.

The last hill was too much for Kreuziger. He had no energy left and was dropped with some ohters. Hernandez and Navarro stayed with him hoping to bring him back and making sure he loses as less time as possible.

Gatto takes the stage win in front of Leukemans and Pate. The pack finishes 2'29 later while Kreuziger's group comes in 3'31 after the winner losing a minute on the other favourites.
