Larsson had a pretty good season, I believe.

He won the Paris-Nice prologue and two top 10 TT results at the Giro but that is it (not counting his TT national championship win):

Yes, these were the only notable results I knew, but I thought he perhaps had some good results in smaller races too. Turns out not Wink

Total off topic I know, but just FYI, Cabedo wasn't Basque. Wink

He rode for Euskaltel, so he is a Basque from the inside Wink

So I guess Kocjan will be a Basque as well if he sign for them. Okay. Pfft

No.

Victor is (IMO) a Basque from the inside, since he only rode for Basque teams. Same with Sammy Sánchez, I consider him more of a Basque than a Spaniard.

Samu is very much Asturian and Cabedo was very much Valencian, but whatevs. I'll not waste energy in something this trivial. Pfft

Just a question, Asturia, Basque Country and Valencia etc. are provinces in Spain from what I know. Why are they so important to European riders? For non-European riders, it doesn't seem important at all, Eg. The US, or Australia, the commentators don't even mention Cadel Evans being from Victoria (Australian state.) I've mainly noticed it with Spanish riders though, as well as Italians, French, Belgians and Dutch (Obviously.)
And is the Basque region more of an independant state within Spain?

I notice it with American riders as well. Its probably just so that the viewers have something to relate to, atleast with the american broadcasts, NBCSports and Universal Sports. (Or whatever that are nowadays)

the basque country is a autonom region, basicly a country within the country if i understood it correct. also there is a huge clinch between catalans and the rest of spain except basque aswell, originating from their older and also more recent history (e.g. franco).
then for belgium, the nothern part (flemish) speaks dutch and is closer to the netherlands, while the southern part (wallonie?) speaks french and is closer to the french side and then you still got a rarely small minority of german speakers.
then the same again with swiss people, etc.

also in general: since the majority of the current european countrys originates from smaller kingdoms that in one way or the other got united, there are fairly diverse costums and mentalitys. thats something not really given for countrys which origins lies within emigration, such as the us, australia, etc.

It's not to do with europe or not europe.

In most countries nobody gives a crap, but in some rare ones like Spain or Belgium, people have very strong regional feelings.

It's why I usually joke (although it's only a half joke, it's true for a lot of spanish people) that when Spain is doing well they say they're spanish and when Spain's not doing well they say they're from [insert_region]

Belgium because it's two separate cultures/languages (French in the South, quasi-Dutch in the North, but a Flandrien would kill me for saying that) that have kind of been thrown together, and Spain because Catalonia and Pais Vasco have a long, and continuing, history of trying to break off from Spain. I'm not sure people from Valencia or Castillia y Leon define themselves as anything other than Spanish, but in the North, where those two, plus Asturias, Navarre, and Galacia all have history as separate kingdoms? People certainly do.

Given that Castillian is Spanish, they don't really need to, but going back further in their history pre-unification, they almost certainly did have those strong feelings.

The two independentists problems we have here in Spain is Catalonia and Basque Country. Spain is divided in autonomy regions, and they are all under the control of the State. Just Navarra and Basque Country have more autonomy because they have their own laws. And about Catalonia, just say it has never been a Country, so the discussion is over imo.

Like, if Andy Murray's winning, he's British, and when he's losing, he's Scottish?
