Trofeo Alcudia (1.1)
Islas Baleares, 150.8 kms
Today started with a three-man breakaway: Jon Ander Insausti, Arvid de Kleijn and Okan Demir. The three gained 3'45" on the first 40 kilometers. Sebastian Henao made use of one of the longer climbs to bridge to the very front. However, the gap shrunk rather fast; 1'15" for the final 30km. When Jon Insausti tried to continue all by himself, only Seba could keep up with his pace. The remaining duo fought for a 40" lead, with 15 to go. Their joint journey ended some five kilometers from the finish. Our other men tried to move up towards the front while setting up Barbero's train. Somehow, our riders lost track of one other approaching the red kite. As the result, Battaglin and Barbero found themselves on separate places. The misplacement of the finish line caused some unnecessary confusion, yet world champion Sütterlin remained focused and won his first race in the rainbow jersey. Battaglin secured our first podium of the year, while ColoQuick-Cult's Sindre Lunke had to settle for the third and lowest step. Trofeo Pollença (1.1)
Islas Baleares, 163.4 kms
The bunch only allowed three escapees: Manuel Amaro, Mats Boeve and William Barta. They hit the first climb with a gap of 4'40" over the bunch. We tried to throw down the hammer early on. While not too many riders were dropped on the first climb, interesting names such as Silin, Berhane were left behind after a crash. The break saw its gap drop with each kick. The three were caught with 75 km left. Dayer Quintana upped the pace even further, thinning the pack to less than 60 men. Haig and Australia's national champion Nelson were the next race favourites that lost contact. Over the top of the day's longest climb, we were still five: Klever, Colla, Quintana, Chávarri and Ion Izagirre. First chasing group sat at 1'25". Hitting flatter roads, the pace dropped from time to time. Several of our riders tried an attack but could not get away, and neither could Kratzert. Eder Chávarri tried his luck too, with less than 7 kilometers to the line. Movistar and Mitchelton made sure the Basque's move did not stick, but their reaction to the next attack came less swiftly. Durbridge couldn't get to Izagirre, so climbers needed to step up. Simone Petilli (AST) was the first to do so as he tried to close the 15" gap Ion had opened up already. Izagirre did not manage to extend his gap, but he did not lose too many seconds either. Under the red kite, the gap turned out to have remained at 13". Loïc Vliegen, Bart De Clercq seemed to get closer, while Valverde cracked and Ruben Fernández, Hirt had some more meters to make up. Ion didn't fade and secured our first win of the season. Jan Hirt's strong sprint got him a second place, ahead of Bart De Clercq and Loïc Vliegen. Still January, we're not that late with our first.
I'm still going through a rough patch atm, so I won't promise regular updates. Nice to hear the story's comeback is appreciated
Getting there for sure!

Trofeo Soller (1.1)
Islas Baleares, 148.1 kms
Kenny Goossens was the last survivor of the initial BOTD, which counted more than 10 riders. Fifty kms from the finish, he was joined by five men who had attacked from the bunch. Amongst them Geschke and Herklotz. The breakaway did not make it to the foot of the final climb. Going up, it was newly re-signed José Luis Campos who set the pace in the peloton. José Luis could not impose a pace high enough to keep the attacks from happening. One came while nearing the summit one of the twofold climb. Climbing talent Ed Dunbar played his card, with an immediate reaction of Börje Kratzert. They still had 30 kms to go, including another two climbs. The duo of attackers fell back, as quickly as they had come. This allowed Ion Izagirre to sneak away in the descent before the penultimate climb. His lead grew to over a minute at a certain point, but Mauro Senni gave it all to get back to Ion. Near the final bump, Senni had him within sight. Izagirre kept 20" on the last difficulty. It's a matter of not cracking first. Ion didn't look back and Senni was nowhere to be seen at the finish. The Italian eventually came 3rd, from a group with Manzana Postobon riders. Trofeo Calvia (1.1)
Islas Baleares, 134.2 kms
The pack did not allow the break to be too big, so only three riders made it. Mendigain teamed up with Nélson Manuel Kula and Frédéric Briganti. Being the weakest climber in his group, Andrónico suffered on the long climb halfway home. Yet, he didn't give the others more than 30", which allowed him to come back in the descent. With 55 left, the trio had 3'55". Mendigain kept fighting on the next, twofold climb. Near the top he had to let go of Briganti, who came 6th at last year's Tour of California, won by Vandenborre. Briganti kept around 2'15" for the final 33 kilometers. His move came to an end over the last climb, where he was caught when Betancur attacked with Bottura. The chasing group, 22 riders strong, still included Sam Vandenborre and Pello Bilbao for us. The gap was 17". The three were caught again, after which Sindre Lunke tried to avoid the group sprint. Sam was totally cooked, while Pello kept jumping wheels. Pello handled his sprint very well, yet he stranded in the wheel of Julián Arredondo. The Colombian easily neutralised Lunke's move, and took his first win of the year. We're leaving the island with 2 wins and 2 podiums. The long spectator comment,
Manuel MartÃnez with ok outing in Trofeo Palma despite the late train.
Enrico Battaglin quite a brilliant podium in Trofeo Alcudia, looked like a lost cause for some time.
Nice to see some fine coordinated teamwork in Trofeo Pollença & Trofeo Soller , surely helped Ion Izagirre take those victorys. GREAT START from him.
Good to see RuralvÃa in the break at Trofeo Calvia, giving a bit of rest to the teammates after some hard days. Mendigain did good.
Pello Bilbao of course even better with another RuralvÃa podium.
Now time for some more important races, don’t know the team well enough to guess if you can expect to compete in the Arab races.

I'm actually glad to read such an extensive comment.
It's been a great time on the island again, with two wins and two podiums. For the sprints, MartÃnez and Barbero should maybe stop counting on our train and try jumping wheels from now on.
Ion's had a great start indeed, obviously on a contract year.
Abu Dhabi's going to be our only Arab race this year. Not a world class field, yet still solid with the names you can see in the preview. Top 10 in the GC is a must to my mind.
