Tre Valli Varesine (1.HC)
Lombardia, 202.6 kms
Senne Leysen and Dieter Verwilst broke away first, later to be joined by Oskari Mäkelä, Matteo Occhialini, Michele Gazzara. Atop the long climb of today, Alpe del Tedesco, the above five-man group had the gap at 4'55". As the gap came down with each lap of the local circuit, Jan Hirt was the first favourite to lose contact. Not too much of a coincidence with the fall he had suffered earlier, just like riders such as Calmejane and Restrepo. Senne Leysen was the first to be dropped from the break. With 20 km to the line, the other four had to defend the last 1'10" of their initial bonus. The second to be reeled in was Verwilst. At the very same time Occhialini attacked from the remaining trio. The pack sat just 45" down, 15kms left. Once the other three had been dealt with, Beñat showed his intention to repeat last year's outcome. He gained 20" on the penultimate climb. The first triumph is exactly a year's time was still 10 kilometers away though. Vuillermoz, Valgren, Van Gestel and Betancur tried but Beñat held on to his 20". Just in case anything was to happen on the last bump, Chávarri and Zardini made sure to remain prepared near the front of the peloton. Beñat kept his lead intact hitting the final straight. The first chasers only swung through the last corner of the race exactly 20" later; 800m to go. Beñat did not take the time to celebrate himself achieving back to back wins here yet he must've felt great only a week before his last ever race. Or a certain rider has secretly been working very hard on the bike.
Hopefully we'll do fine in the real Italian classic too.

This must be Beñat's final race in his career right? Would be amazing if he can bring his great form onto this race, so he can get a great result in his last race

His last ever race indeed. He'll probably have to settle for a serving role, yet he's aware this is another level than the race he won a few days ago.

Il Lombardia (1.UWT)
Lombardia, 256.9 kms
The Story of the Race of the Falling Leaves Edoardo Zardini entered the break of the day, opting for the very same approach that got him 4th place last season. This time around he teamed up with Rota, Cerulli, Carnevali and recent Montréal winner Juul-Jensen. The bunch took it rather easy on Colma di Sormano, the first difficulty of the race. On the top, the five of the breakaway group had a gap of 8'45". Madonna del Ghisallo caused a first split at the front, yet the definite one came on Valico di Valcava, the third long ascent. Christopher Juul-Jensen and Zardini left the rest behind, while the pack brought the gap down to 3'05". All of a sudden, many riders started to lose contact with the back. The two remaining leaders found out why when Mikel Landa passed them without pardon. At that point the Basque top climber had already put 55" into his main opponents. Our RuralvÃa riders all vanished from the front. Unable to evaluate his arrears because of the presence of countless fans, Adam Yates became Landa's first chaser. As according to the race radio:
P | - 52" - | E3 | - 52" - | E2 | - 1'16" - | E1 | | | Contador | | A. Yates | | Landa | | | S. Yates | | | | | | | Quintana | | | | | | | …
Over the Valcava summit, it became possible to map the situation. Eder Chávarri was our best rider at that point, sitting in the 5 men strong E5:
E5 | | | - 3'10" - | | | E1 | E5 | - 1'14" - | E3 | - ? - | E2 | - ? - | E1 | Chávarri | | S. Yates | | A. Yates | | Landa | Kelderman | | Quintana | | | | | M.A. López | | | | | | | Majka | | | | | | | Carthy
Bad understandings made several chasing groups merge again, with the following situation as a result. Two steep climbs and 27 kilometers to go. Splendid camera shot on Castello della Moretta. The time gaps were still significant, despite the presence of four groups in only one image. Simon Yates dropped Adam, and Quintana, to become the closest chaser at 55". An impressive effort made Chávarri catch up with Quintana and A.Yates. Apart from Miguel Angel López no one could follow all the way to the top. No sign of the enemy when Landa tamed the last climb of the day, to the Old City of Bergamo. The steeper slopes didn't keep him from extending his lead to 1'45" over Simon Yates. Landa was very likely to become the 5th Spanish winner on the last 8 editions (3x J.Rodriguez, 2x Intxausti). Chávarri used the last obstacle to get rid of Quintana and Adam Yates. Whereas Simon was happy not be dropped too, López still looked strong. Mikel Landa had plenty of time to celebrate one of the most impressive performances in recent years. The question remains whether he will ever succeed in ridding himself of the spook that keeps him from winning GTs. Close to two minutes later, Eder could not match López' sprint speed as he had to settle for third. Still a great way to conclude his awesome year. Despite keeping away from the cameras for the whole day, Ion Izagirre eventually secured an 8th place in the E4 sprint only losing to Kiserlovski. Entertainment from far out indeed! Giving the events it was the best possible way to end this season. I don't know what the new season will bring but I hope there will be plenty.
Definitely the best we could get today. Great to have you stop by btw.

Another big result for Chávarri as he proves not be a stage hunter only. Let's hope we can take another step by putting someone in the UCI top 10 next year.
Although I can't fully remember last year's outcome, I'm pretty sure we've climbed the rankings even further. Let's continue along this path.

Spoiler I'm going to take a break from this story because I'm about to hit a few busy weeks. I'll make sure to stop by every now and then and I'd appreciate if you could leave your vote on (one of) the poll(s) included in the season recap. I'd love to read why exactly any of you chose any option over another. So if you feel like it, do not hesitate to leave a comment to explain yourself.
Many thanks for the support on this season and I'll see you soon enough for the 2020 adventure.
