Maybe but I seem to remember seeing similar trends in even one day races. The top guys HR data suggests they aren't going as deep as you'd think whereas the top performing lesser known riders are exactly where you'd expect them to be.
Granted I need to look at more data and HR only tells you so much (if the numbers and zones are even accurate) but still it confuses me.

Well, in long climbs it's normal that the better climbers have a lower heartrate - compared to lesser climbers - because they can ride the group's pace with less effort? Whilst lesser good climbers have to "fight" to keep the pace. This way, their heartrate must be higher, even with slower times.

Yes but only so much was ridden in the pack. The last 4-5km or so he should have be going hard as it was every man for himself. He appeared to be doing that on screen but the HR data doesn't show the same level of effort as I'd expect. From what I can tell he was dropped while riding at a tempo heart rate. I'm sure he was trying, other factors could be more important or the data could simply be wrong but as it stands it just seems a bit odd to me.

The field is not that much weaker. It fits perfectly with Sagan being lighter than previous, and a bit slower in the sprints
Gesink, Dumb, Henao, Zubeldia, Ten Dam which all are riders climbing better than Sagan.
However Sagan has played with the thought of transforming into GC rider since he has the watts to pull it off. Perhaps this was the first step. The 2x5 attacks each from Henao and Alaphillippe was the best mountain duel this year IMO |

Lighter? No way Sagan is lighter. The ammount of muscle mass he has has made him more heavy than before. |

Sagan certainly isn't lighter this season, if anything he looks to have bulked up a little more

Amount of muscle mass? Well he was heavyer pre-season perhaps due to too much drinking. But muscle mass thats a bit outrageous to say. Im a certified personal trainer and enjoys body building since i cant ride bike like before nor play soccer. If sagan has gained more muscle mass, it cant be more than 500-1000g of pure muscle mass, taking anatomy in mind and taking the little weight differences these guys has.
A natural bodybuilder living theoritical perfect, can maximum take 4-5kg of pure musclemass on in a year (pure musclemass discounts any other weight increase in water retention and fats). Furthermore sagan cant have taken much on, since he would have to bulk up, probably spend much time in a gym etc.
So no Sagan has certainly not taking much weight on in pure muscle mass.
For the sake of the argument, where exactly do think this hypothetical extra muscle mass is on sagan? In his legs? In his skinny arms? In his no existing pecs or deltoids? .. To much broscience sorry. |

Physiologically and anatomically that is not possible for a guy whos already that muscular in the legs on a such short time period. Perhaps with anabolic steroids and HGH, but im not sure.
