Continental Championships
The final event! The best European riders are gathered here today to battle for the prestige award of being crowned best European Road Rider! Let us begin!
Continental Championships - European Road Race Event
And we're off! The breakaway has been decisive in both of the previous road races. Will the peloton dare to let them ride far today?
Strangely we see the largest breakaway group yet! 14 men lead the race and get almost 9 minutes on the peloton.
The peloton chased but gained too little ground.
And then Zdenek Stybar put himself at the front. The breakaway gap went from 3 minutes to 2 and finally to 1.
An attack! Valverde and Gilbert seem strong today!
But not strong enough, as the peloton catches up with them again.
The breakaway could feel the peloton's breath now!
And then the peloton split up when the favorites pooled their forces together and went looking for the breakaway on their own.
Valverde was definitely keen on this title, you could see by the effort he took.
But it happened, the group of favorites and the breakaway of the day smelted together into one big group.
The final climb of the Cauberg now. Cancellara, Gilbert and Valverde create a small gap.
Valverde had wasted too much energy during the race. The sprint for the win was between Cancellara and Gilbert!
Gilbert took the lead and was heading for the victory here!
But Fabian Cancellara had a final punch in him and overtook the Belgian not more than 3 meters before the line. By far the most exciting race of all 6 Championships.

Uhh, 4th.
Still, Dan showing a lot of good signs and all.
And two medals is still good, wished one would have been golden though.

Oh FFS Gilbert.
I don't get much luck, do I?
And surprise, surprise, no Van Avermaet in the results.
Any idea on withdrawals, Ian Butler? I'm guessing young Dermot Walker didn't make it.

Thanks for some good reports. Happy enough with Antón finishing 6th on this last one even though I would have preferred to see him a bit more in front instead of always leading the 2nd group...

About the withdrawels: there were 192 entrants and 174 finishers. I guess there were quite some withdrawels, but during the race I was on x8 for quite a while (until the final 3 laps, rather boring before that) so I guess I must've missed it. Though there were some flat tires, but since there were 18 withdrawels, I guess it was a group caught behind and having the PCM bug that nobody wanted to ride |

Contador 113th? WTF!? and best placed Kreuziger in 24th
Safe to say this was easily the worst out of the continental championships, such a strong squad yet such an epic fail.
