It's disappointing for Sella that gaps have not been created in these first sets of mountains. This is usually his big chance, as we have seen in previous Giro's he isn't quite as good in the the last week. That said no-one is as good then.
Still after the second TT he will be way back.
Interesting to note that Madrazo is still behind both Phinney and Spilak. This is a mild surprise for me, he has taken back very little in two mountain tests. The expectation would have been for Madrazo to utterly dominate on his way to a win. He still looks the slight favourite but he will take a while to take pink.
For SRB a very heartening performance from Tom Stubbe, really gutsy ride and who knows half a chance of a valuable KoM tilt.

Yeah it's looking very interesting in the top battle. Spilak is probably taking the 3rd spot, while it will be very interesting who takes the win.
Madrazo lost 1'18" on the first TT of 42km. The second flat is 60km, which is probably going to mean that he loses ~ 2 minutes. What is on the + for Madrazo is his secondary stats. His resistance and recuperation is much more significant than at Phinney.
So the 3rd week can potentially be very hard for Phinney. He will unquestionable keep the Maglia Rosa on stage 14. Madrazo needs to take a minute or so here to realistically stand a chance. On the mountains-TT I suspect Madrazo will take the win, but not by much. Madrazo is 85MO and 76HI, while Phinney is 82MO and 77HI. BUT the resistance might be important here. Madrazo to take 30 seconds or so. And then he is within touching ground on stage 20, where I think his recuperation and resistance will make him win the race. The relatively short stages (none in the region of 200km) is Phinneys chance for the win.
But it's going to be very very interesting.

Had my heart pounding there for a second. Nice report as always.
Fothen holding on, and Trofimov/Ricco didn't get any bonus seconds is really nice. Diego Ulissi simply doesn't have the power, although he should be able to stay close to Claeys on a finish like this. I have hardly gotten any stage points so far, so I really have to rely on Fothen to get a good GC place for this race not to be horrible points-wise.
Chances to get a good GC spot was increased though as a couple of competitors for my top 10 spot was caught behind. I feel their annoyance though!
Now hopefully two stages without any drama at all before the long TT where Fothen should be able to catch Ricco and distance Sella and Henao a lot.

Very pleased with that stage. Exactly what I was hoping for.
Dyachenko in the break as most suitable rider for that role, collecting KoM points that could be important later. With some luck, he might join Efimkin in the hunt for that jersey.
I almost started believing that they could even make it to the finishing after seeing the gap at 40 km to go, but I guess that was never going to happen with several climbs up Via del Tricalle still ahead.
Also, superb finish from Efimkin. Given his position at 1500m remaining, 3rd is far more than should've been possible. Good to see Spilak narrowing down Phinney's lead as well. Smaller gaps means a more interesting 3rd week.

Good to see neither Phinney nor Trofimov taking a lot of points.
Now on to more entertaining and exciting stages for Puma.
We definitely need to take two times second the very least to stay in contention.

Hmm, not going so well anymore. Goes to show that losing the pink jersey was quite crucial, although, Trofimov did even worse than I feared in that mountain stage. Top 10 will be difficult in the GC now.

Nice win for Claeys. Seems like holding your kick till the end really payed off on the steep Chieti hill. Trofimov was rather dissapointing, he needs to take time on such a stage if he wants to keep his top 10.
Phinney on the other hand looks stronger and stronger for the overal.

I know Rin hasn't commented that much but I am a bit of a fan of Lotto - partly for not bringing Cunego here. (That is a scary thought!). So this is a nice win and makes a change from the Trofimov dominence.
More misery really for defending champion Ricco, who I would have thought was the favourite here.
Back to the flat now and I wonder how that first set of mountains will have taken out of the sprinters and their sprint trains.

Another good stage result by Spilak! I'm really pleased with his performances so far. Hopefully there won't be any crashes on the coming flat stages, which should mean a very good GC position into the final week of racing.
I'm favouring Phinney for the overall win. It will be an incredibly tough task for Madrazo to wrestle off that pink jersey on Phinney's shoulders after the time trial on stage 13.
Congratulations to Rin! Nice to see Claeys show his abilities when not forced to work for Cunego.
Good report as well, SN, thanks.

Almost my reaction to that stage win -> https://www.youtub...-4LQ#t=57s
Can't believe how that was possible (wonder how fast he was storming forward in the game) I mean the others are (a much for the "helping" stats like endurance or resistance) better than him plus where got he that turbo from?
Unfortunately that might increase his value and interest from other managers in him and there was some last transfer season.

Hmm, this isn't entirely going to plan. I've got to hope that the final mountain stages are more decisive.

Break. Getting caught with 3 minutes with 10km's to go it's something. Bennati by far the strongest today in the sprint. |

Nice won for Bennati! Good for him that Davis edged out Swift there giving him the maglia rosso back. Phinney finishing 4th already means he won't hold it for long though. Phiney just misses out on the bonus' but could very well get some seconds in those last 4 days

Hmm, everything looks absolutely perfect for my Alex Nepomnyachsniy.. But then something really strange happened...
Henao Montoya was quite good on that second big mountain stage. Too bad it is really hard to actually get gaps in mountains in PCM12...

So the three chasing, and Rabottini, were all going fast enough separately to keep away, but together, not so good. Great work.
Still, as long as I keep getting in breaks... I might win a stage! |

Only one to go before another crucial time trial. Good to see Spilak stay out of trouble this time too
Congratulations to Puma-SAP. Though, Phinney will be a tough man to beat for the point jersey. |

Another Van Heerdan mistimed sprint, this time with a sprint train calamity. It's entertaining at least.
My consolation of course is some excellent sprinting by the other Van in California. Still would be nice to score a but heavier here.
