Sad too see Navarro Garcia go.

Stromeon
Yeah quite sad to have him leaving the team but I received an e-mail in-game from him saying he wasn't happy with his demotion, role in the team etc. so I just decided to let him go Frown On the plus side, it opens up some funds to bring in someone better for next season Wink

GIRO D'ITALIA 2012 PREVIEW

I'm not going to go into a full in-depth preview of the Giro d'Italia since Matthias isn't racing in it but I thought I'd just tell you who was racing and who the favourites are.

GENERAL CLASSIFICATION

images.supersport.com/Chris-Froome-wave-120707G300.jpg

Chris Froome

Froome hasn't done anything of note this season yet - but that's down to the fact he has only had 14 race days so far. Is probably not quite at peak fitness but is still one of the strongest GT riders out there.

news.velonation.com/Men/Road/Sa_Sl/2011/Feature/original/Scarponi_Michele_TA11st4_rcs1.jpg

Michele Scarponi

A good performance in Romandie, where he won a stage and finished 6th overall; added to 8th overall in Tirreno-Adriatico earlier in the season means the defending champion Scarponi is in good shape to try and retain his title.

data.whicdn.com/images/32098925/ivan-basso1_large.jpg

Ivan Basso

The two-time Giro winner has been largely anonymous so far this season, bar a fifth place plus stage win in Trentino. The 34 year-old veteran will be hoping to turn things round in the Giro this year

answers.bettor.com/images/Articles/thumbs/extralarge/Roman-Kreuziger-eyeing-victory-at-the-Giro-d-Italia-opener-151473.jpg

Roman Kreuziger

Our leader in the Giro, the in-form Roman Kreuziger has had an excellent season so far and stands 6th in the World Tour rankings at the moment. He dominated the Tour of Romandie, winning the GC, points classification and two stages. Add that to top 10 finishes in all the Ardennes means Kreuziger is the dangerman going in to the Giro

upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/40/Jurgen_Van_Den_Broeck.jpg/220px-Jurgen_Van_Den_Broeck.jpg

Jurgen van den Broeck

Van den Broeck is my outsider pick - like Froome he is most likely peaking for the Tour and so only has 15 race days under his belt with no results to speak of yet in the season. However he's the best of the rest and will present a challenge to the others.

POINTS CLASSIFICATION

images.supersport.com/MarkCavendish120913InactionG300.jpg

Mark Cavendish

The Manx Missile has had a great start to the season so far - a great win at Milano - Sanremo the highlight and a dominant Tour of Oman where he won 3 stages, the points and the mountains (!!) jersey. However, he has already amassed 31 race days and one would assume he would be going for the Tour so he might not be quite up for all of the sprints.

images.supersport.com/Alessandro-Petacchi-100707fingerG300.jpg

Alessandro Petacchi

He may be 38, but Petacchi will always be a contender in the bunch sprints. A few wins in some Italian one-day Continental races means he's got some confidence and so he could challenge Cavendish for the points jersey

images.supersport.com/Tyler-Farrar-Celebrates-120824G300.jpg

Tyler Farrar

With already 32 race days racked up and no results to show for it, Farrar isn't in the best of form but you can never discount the American and there is no doubt he is still a good sprinter. But can he beat Cavendish?

There's also a very strong field of Italian sprinters lining up, with Oss, Viviani, Modolo and Guardini all going to be challenging in the sprints but I doubt any of them will win consistently enough to take the points jersey, the same goes for the dangerous Belarussian Yauheni Hutarovich.

That's it from me, I won't do a preview of the KoM or the Young Jersey because they're not that important to warrant a preview Wink I'll be back to report on the first week's action Smile

Oh one last thing I almost forgot: Our squad!

Leader: Roman Kreuziger
Sprinter: Jonathan Cantwell
Free Element: Chris Anker Sørensen
Free Element: Karsten Kroon
Team-mate: Daniel Navarro Garcia
Team-mate: Sergio Paulinho

WEEK 1 REPORT

Stage 1: Herning ITT 8.3kms

The first stage of the Giro d'Italia is a short prologue around the streets of the Danish town of Herning. The GC favourites would be looking to get off to a good start here and also time-trial specialists such as Geraint Thomas and David Zabriskie would be looking for a stage win.

The early pace was set by home man Lars Ytting Bak, who finished an impressive 7th, but it was our man from Saxo Bank, Manuele Boaro; who stole the show. He finished in 2nd place on the prologue, just behind Jakob Fuglsang, who took a great victory to send the home fans into a frenzy!

2Manuele BoaroTeam Saxo Bank+ 1
3David ZabriskieGarmin - Barracuda+ 2
4Geraint ThomasSky Pro Cycling+ 4
5Marco PinottiBMC Racing Teams.t.

Kreuziger finished 11th, a good start from him, and none of the GC favourites lost much time

Stage 2: Herning - Herning Flat stage 196kms

The first road stage was dead flat and it would see the commencement of the sprint competition proper. Cavendish, Petacchi and Farrar were the favourites here

It was Petacchi who stole it from a disappointed Cavendish on the line. Liquigas' Viviani rounded off the podium

2Mark CavendishSky Pro Cyclings.t.
3Elia VivianiLiquigas-Cannondales.t.
4Theo BosRabobank Cycling Teams.t.
5Danilo NapolitanoAcqua & Sapones.t.

Stage 3: Horsens - Horsens Flat stage 190kms

The last stage before we headed back to Verona for the TTT, this stage was as flat as the last one. Expect much of the same

However, a late attack from Marco Pinotti, well up in the GC, obviously surprised the peloton and he coasted home at the end as the sprinters' teams misjudged the distance horribly.

2Mark CavendishSky Pro Cycling+ 1'18
3Alessandro PetacchiLampre-ISDs.t.
4Elia VivianiLiquigas-Cannondales.t.
5Christopher SuttonSky Pro Cyclings.t.

Pinotti takes over leadership of the maglia rosa from Fuglsang, but we'll have to see what happens in the TTT!

Stage 4: Verona - Verona TTT 31kms

Today was the all-important TTT - this is where you cannot win a race but you can most definitely lose it!

Garmin-Barracuda won by a narrow margin over Rabobank, but Manuele Boaro and Kreuziger collaborated to spend most of the time of the front and brought us into a 4th place finish! Great news for Kreuziger's GC ambitions!

1Garmin - Barracuda32'41
2Rabobank Cycling Team+ 4
3Lotto Belisol+ 10
4Team Saxo Bank+ 13
5Radioshack - Nissan+ 25

With weaker teams to support them, strong climbers like Rujano, Brambilla, Garzelli and Gadret lost over two minutes today, seriously denting GC ambitions. Basso also surprisingly lost a minute and a half.

Stage 5: Modena - Fano Flat stage 198kms

Another really flat stage - Cavendish would be looking for revenge of his defeat by Petacchi in Herning.

And the Goat-Missile gets there! Petacchi is second and Cantwell has another failure, he hasn't finished inside the top 15 yet! Also Farrar is failing to show himself in the sprints, no top fives for him yet.

2Alessandro PetacchiLampre-ISDs.t.

4Danilo NapolitanoAcqua & Sapones.t.

Stage 6: Urbino - Porto Sant'Elpidio Hilly stage 206kms

A very steep and tough hill stage, today will separate some of the favourites out and catch out anyone who isn't in form

It looks like the breakaway triumphed here; and they were followed by other punchers. But the big revelation today was the fact that Chris Froome seems to have confirmed rumours that he is using the Giro as a warm-up for the Tour, as he lost 14 minutes here; completely ending GC ambitions at all. Unfortunately Kreuziger had a really bad day today and lost 6 minutes, finishing behind Sorensen and Paulinho.

Karsten Kroon got in the breakaway, his sort of stage this one, and collected the most KoM points, meaning he leads the KoM competition at the moment!

3José Iván GutierrezMovistar Teams.t.
4Philippe GilbertBMC Racing Team+ 1'04
5Stefano GarzelliAcqua & Sapones.t.

Gutierrez now overtakes Pinotti at the head of the GC, with Gilbert close behind

Stage 7: Recanati - Rocca di Cambio Mountain stage 203kms

The first mountain of the Giro is encountered today, and so should shake the GC up a bit.

Basso dominated the stage here as huge time-gaps opened up on the climb to the finish. Moreno did well to stay with him until right to the very end and Kreuziger and Froome recovered from yesterday to finish 8th and 7th respectively

2Daniel MorenoKatusha Team+ 24
3Damiano CunegoLampre-ISD+ 1'04
4Domenico PozzovivoColnago - CSF Inox+ 1'13
5Gianluca BrambillaColnago - CSF Inox+ 1'46

Bad news arrives soon after the stage concludes - John Gadret fell very awkwardly during a descent and has withdrawn from the Giro. He has a fractured vertebrate and is scheduled to return in August

Meanwhile, Basso now takes over at the top of the GC, meaning the maglia rosa has changed hands three times already!

General Classification at end of 1st week:
1Ivan BassoLiquigas-Cannondale24h28'42
2Philippe GilbertBMC Racing Team+ 29
3Michele ScarponiLampre-ISD+ 1'03
4Stefano GarzelliAcqua & Sapone+ 1'05
5Daniel MorenoKatusha Team+ 1'08
6Damiano CunegoLampre-ISD+ 1'10
7Chris Anker SørensenTeam Saxo Bank+ 1'56
8Domenico PozzovivoColnago - CSF Inox+ 2'34
9Marco PinottiBMC Racing Team+ 3'51
10Jakob FuglsangRadioshack - Nissan+ 4'04

Great performances inside the top 10 of the hilly stage and mountain stage, coupled with the TTT success, means Chris Anker Sørensen is in 7th place in the GC! Kreuziger meanwhile is in 13th

Mark Cavendish, with 69 points, leads the points competition by two points over Petacchi, who is 21 points ahead of third-placed Viviani.

Kroon has 16 points in the mountains, with Cameron Meyer the next best-placed rider with 8.

Hope you like my review of the Giro so far, I know it's quite wordy but I thought you might like to know what's going on Smile

So far pretty balanced out between the top sprinters!

@Freitas: he's somehow managed to hold on after doing well in the hilly stage, not sure if he'll still be in second after week 2 though Smile

@sutty: He's having a great Giro so far! Kreuziger is disappointing at the moment but we'll see what happens as the race progresses

@Ian: It's a pretty close battle between Cavendish and Petacchi isn't it! Farrar not living up to expectations though Frown

Thanks for the continued support from all three of you, it's been great and has kept me motivated Wink

Week 2 up shortly Smile

WEEK 2 REPORT

Stage 8: Sulmona - Lago Laceno Mountain stage 230kms

A difficult mountain stage starts the second week before the stages get a bit flatter.

Ivan Basso attacks on the final climb and draws out a good gap to Scarponi with Gilbert alongside him having a fantastic ride! Both Chris Anker and Roman had disappointing rides today, losing 3 minutes

3Michele ScarponiLampre-ISDs.t.
4Damiano CunegoLampre-ISD+ 58
5Gianluca BrambillaColnago - CSF Inoxs.t.

Today's stage was run at an incredibly slow pace wasn't it!
Basso extends his lead at the top of the GC meanwhile

Stage 9: San Giorgio del Sannio - Frosinone Flat stage 176kms

A very flat day today - the Petacchi-Cavendish battle resumes!

Cavendish pips Petacchi to the win! The usual suspects take the minor placings and Cantwell finally finds a decent wheel and puts in a good performance to finish 10th!

2Alessandro PetacchiLampre-ISDs.t.
3Danilo NepolitanoAcqua & Sapones.t.
4Theo BosRabobank Cycling Teams.t.
5Elia VivianiLiquigas-Cannondales.t.

Stage 10: Civitavecchia - Assisi Hilly stage 191kms

A flat stage with an incline at the finish - could be another stage for Gilbert to do well in!

It's Emanuele Sella who takes the win and Gilbert does indeed do well, finishing 2nd. Another shocking day from Froome here, he loses 6 minutes.
Kreuziger finishes a disappointing 40th, overshadowing a great performance from Troels Vinther - he finished 26th!

2Philippe GilbertBMC Racing Team+ 50
3Ivan BassoLiquigas-Cannondale+ 58
4Damiano CunegoLampre-ISD+1'10
5Stefano GarzelliAcqua & Sapones.t.

With that effort Gilbert retakes the lead over Basso in the GC!

Stage 11: Assisi - Montecatini Terme Flat stage 243kms

A flat stage with a small hill just near the end that could mess up the trains a bit

Petacchi gets his own back on Cavendish - it's 2-2 now!

1Alessandro PetacchiLampre-ISD5h21'32
2Mark CavendishSky Pro Cyclings.t.
3Graeme BrownRabobank Cycling Teams.t.
4Tyler FarrarGarmin-Barracudas.t.
5Daniel OssLiquigas-Cannondales.t.

Stage 12: Serevezza - Sestri Levante Hilly stage 152kms

A hilly stage with several big long category 2 mountains to negotiate. An ideal stage for the breakaway

No luck for the breakaway as Stefano Garzelli powers away to win and claim the overall race lead as Basso finally loses some time, finishing 2 and a half minutes down. Gilbert gets yet another second place as the pseudo-favourites gained some time. Kreuziger finished 10th, a good performance.

4Domenico PozzovivioColnago - CSF Inoxs.t.
5Hubert DupontAg2r La Mondiales.t.

Stage 13: Savona - Cervere Flat stage 122kms

A flat stage, so inevitably a battle between Cavendish and Petacchi - who would take the crucial 3-2 lead?

It's the Goat-Missile's turn today!

1Mark CavendishSky Pro Cycling2h50'37
2Alessandro PetacchiLampre-ISDs.t.
3Elia VivianiLiquigas-Cannondales.t.
4Graeme BrownRabobank Cycling Teams.t.
5Theo BosRabobank Cycling Teams.t.

Stage 14: Cherasco - Cervinia Mountain stage 202kms

The last stage of the second week is a tough and crucial mountain stage. Let's see if Roman or Chris Anker can put in a good performance here.

Chris finishes 5th! Kreuziger again doesn't impress with a 20th place. Pozzovivo takes a great mountain-top win with Basso gaining the seconds needed to overhaul Garzelli at the top.

1Domenico PozzovivoColnago - CSF Inox6h04'48
2Ivan BassoLiquigas-Cannondales.t.
3Stefano GarzelliAcqua & Sapone+ 32
4Damiano CunegoLampre-ISD+ 44
5Chris Anker SørensenTeam Saxo Banks.t.

Soo... after two-thirds of the Giro done and dusted, how does the GC stack up?

General Classification:

1Ivan BassoLiquigas-Cannondale58h49'10
2Stefano GarzelliAcqua & Sapone+ 30
3Damiano CunegoLampre-ISD+ 2'38
4Michele ScarponiLampre-ISD+ 2'43

11Roman KreuzigerTeam Saxo Bank+ 9'43
...
28Sergio PaulinhoTeam Saxo Bank+ 27'10
...
29Chris FroomeSky Pro Cycling+ 27'32

Well, it's a close battle between Basso and Garzelli, surprisingly, at the top, and the rest are a ways behind. Michele Scarponi is sitting pretty in fourth, but 5 seconds behind his team-mate! Gilbert's still hanging on in there and Chris Anker is 7th with a huge margin to 6th but he's having an excellent Giro so far, no doubt about it! Kreuziger not quite where we want him at the moment, but week 3 is a killer and a good 4 or 5 of those minutes can easily be recovered if he's going a bit better.
See you soon for a report on the third week and a special report on the queen stage!

WEEK 3 REPORT

Stage 15: Busto Arsizio - Lecco Pian dei Resinelli Mountain stage 170kms

A really tough mountain stage kicks off the last week of the Giro, with 3 difficult categorized climbs before another tough one to the finish at Lecco Pian dei Resinelli. A real opportunity for big gaps to open up amongst the favourites.

Pozzovivo takes a second consecutive stage win just ahead of Basso again! He's having a great Giro so far - two stage wins and now up to 5th in the GC! Chris Anker manages tenth, continuing his great run of results; and Kreuziger is 17th, once again behind Sørensen.

5Jose RujanoAndroni Giocattoli-Venezuelas.t.

Stage 16: Limone sul Garda - Falzes Hilly stage 174kms

Today's stage sees a steady climb up to the finish where it suddenly steepens rather. Probably a good day for the punchers - can Gilbert grab another win?

You guessed it! Gilbert wins comfortably with seconds to spare and Chris Anker finishes an impressive 4th and gains a few seconds on people further up the GC like Scarponi.

Stage 17: Falzes - Cortina D'Ampezzo Mountain stage 184kms

Another tough day in the mountains, similar to Stage 15 but with a brutal ascent of the Passo Giau before a tough descent down to Cortina D'Ampezzo

It's another stage win for Pozzovivo, who takes his stage win count to three in the Giro by taking this stage in style! Basso cements his position at the top of the GC with a strong rider, but both Sørensen and Kreuziger lose two minutes today

1Domenico PozzovivoColnago - CSF Inox5h38'33
2Michele ScarponiLampre-ISD+ 36
3Ivan BassoLiquigas-Cannondale+ 49
4Stefano GarzelliAcqua & Sapone+ 1'06
5Jurgen van den BroeckLotto Belisols.t.

Stage 18: San Vito di Cadore - Vedelago Flat stage 137kms

One of the easiest stages of the Giro, it's the last chance for Petacchi and Cavendish to lock horns and see if Petacchi can level the victory tally up to 3-3 or if the Goat-Missile can take an outright victory!

Petacchi puts in a great performance and wins the stage! And the Petacchi-Cavendish 1-2 is finally broken as Hutarovich sprints really well to get past Cavendish on the line. Another disappointing sprint for Cantwell, he's probably best suited as a lead-out man

1Alessandro PetacchiLampre-ISD2h46'30
2Yauheni HutarovichFDJ-BigMats.t.
3Mark CavendishSky Pro Cyclings.t.
4Theo BosRabobank Cycling Teams.t.
5Tyler FarrarGarmin-Barracudas.t.

Stage 19: Treviso - Alpe di Pampeago Val di Fiemme Mountain stage 194kms

The second-hardest stage of the Giro, this shark-toothed route sees the riders cross two Cat.1 climbs and then two Cat.2 climbs, with the second one being the finish at the Alpe di Pampeago. Can Pozzovivo extend his recent dominance? Or will Basso extend his lead at the top by winning again?

Pozzovivo! Another stage win for the in-form Italian - that's his fourth so far and it means he climbs to a lofty 3rd position in the GC. Once again, only Basso can follow him to the top; but it's disaster for Michele Scarponi - he loses four minutes to Pozzovivo and drops to 7th overall! Chris Anker - 4th again - great riding from him!

1Domenico PozzovivoColnago - CSF Inox5h24'59
2Ivan BassoLiquigas-Cannondales.t.
3Damiano CunegoLampre-ISD+ 19
4Chris Anker SørensenTeam Saxo Banks.t.
5Hubert DupontAg2r La Mondiale+ 58

With just the Stelvio and the final time-trial to go, here's what it looks like at the top:

1Ivan BassoLiquigas-Cannondale81h32'31
2Stefano GarzelliAcqua & Sapone+ 3'08
3Domenico PozzovivoColnago - CSF Inox+ 3'49
4Damiano CunegoLampre-ISD+ 4'47
5Michele ScarponiLampre-ISD+ 7'06
6Chris Anker SørensenTeam Saxo Bank+ 10'32
7Jurgen van den BroeckLotto Belisol+ 12'06
8Jose RujanoAndroni Giocattoli-Venezula+ 13'17
9Hubert DupontAg2r La Mondiale+ 16'33
10Roman KreuzigerTeam Saxo Bank+ 17'00
...
17Chris FroomeSky Pro Cycling+ 32'00
...
19Philippe GilbertBMC Racing Team+ 38'36
...
28Sergio PaulinhoTeam Saxo Bank+ 57'57

So Basso looks pretty unstoppable unless he crashes or another mishap occurs on the last stage. Garzelli is somehow retaining that second place and Pozzovivo is in third! Rather unexpected podium that. Meanwhile Chris Anker is doing great, but is unlikely to move up the GC due to the 3 and a half minute gap up to Scarponi. And Gilbert, after an extremely strong first two weeks, has lost significant time in the mountainous stage and drops down. Kreuziger isn't out of it yet, and could easily overtake Dupont to claim 9th place in the GC.

In the points, Cavendish has 175, closely followed by Petacchi who has 167, and then by Basso who has 159.

In the mountains, it's a close three-way battle between current leader Cunego, who has 52 points, Liquigas' Eros Capecchi who has 48, and Pozzovivo who has 47 - all up for grabs tomorrow!

Stelvio up soon, hopefully tomorrow Smile
