30th April 2011 - Tour de Romandie
(Aubonne - Signal de Bougy)
A hilly ITT is what lies ahead on stage 5. Not my cup of tea, and by the looks of the dark rain clouds outside the bus window... going to be one of the longest 20km I've ridden.
Definitely a stage for someone like Marco to look at taking Yellow.
0km: After a pleasant start to the TT, the heaven's opened as I made my way to the starting gate. Leaving the ramp, Nelson Oliveira had set the quickest time, finishing the course in 33'30".
9km: At the first checkpoint, I was 23rd place, 35" down on Oliveira.
20km: Crossing the line, Jos Van Emden held the quickest time, with 33'21", and I was 32nd place with a time of 33'52". I quickly got back to the team bus to warm back up. As I came back out, news filtered through to me that Rodríguez had won the TT, extending his GC lead.

@IanButler & Dienblad: Thanks!! Really happy as well seeing that Cav is not at full fitness. Team did a great job helping Cav over the climbs. Hoping for the same on final stage, as it has a similar profile to it.

@Ian: It was a hilly TT so any TT stats are thrown out the window. Proof that is Bruseghin in 5th... The profile doesnt show it, but the climbs were 9% plus.

1st May 2011 - Tour de Romandie
(Champagne - Genève)
Today is about two things; Victory for me, and KoM Jersey for Patrick. Both look like realistic targets, so there are big hopes for the day's finish.
23km: After a few minor attacks in the opening stages, 4 riders finally managed to get away. Patrick was part of it, with the KoM jersey in his sights.
56km: More and more riders went off the front of the peleton, and slowly the break grew to 14, quickly building up a 8'54" lead as the day's mountain's loomed.
105km: Over the mountains, things were not looking good for the team. Patrick had missed out in the two KoM sprints, and also the jersey. Also, Katusha were not willing to chase the break back. At the bottom of the long descent, with 50km to go, the break was 11'34" ahead! We tried to chase but no one wanted to help out. All in all, a lost cause!
134km: So, with it looking like a victory for the breakaway, the cat and mouse game began. Small digs from the riders began, but it was a big move from Kevin Seeldraeyers (Quickstep) that seemed to be decisive.
161km: With 1km to go, Seeldraeyers had a gap of 38" on the the second group. Victory looked a certainty.
162km: With plenty of time to celebrate, the Quickstep man basks in the applause, taking the stage by 31". Patrick was sadly dropped in the final 5km, coming home 1'09" after Seeldraeyers in 14th place. I finished in the main pack, and deeply disappointed at Katusha's tactics today!

Cavendish lets rip after Geneva finish
The cycling press were met with a very disappointed and angry Mark Cavendish after the finish of the Tour de Romandie in Geneva.
The HTC man was not best pleased with many team's tactics, particular Katusha, during the final stage in Switzerland. "No one wanted to help out today." explained Cavendish, "Garmin did not seem to care, Katusha had us riding at a stand still up the Mountains, and did anyone see Sky today? I thought they had gone home a stage early!"
And that was only the beginning, as the Manxman continued to make digs at Katusha. "To be frank, if we hadn't hit the front on the descent, I think that [Joaquím] Rodríguez would have lost the Yellow Jersey. [Jérôme] Coppel was in the break, and I'm sure he was provisional leading on the road before we started to work. I doubt we will get a 'Thank You' card and basket of fruit in the post though from them!"

Ronde van Vlaanderen
m | Name | Team | Time | 1 | Fabian Cancellara | Leopard Trek | 6h07'52 | 2 | Tom Boonen | Quick·Step Cycling Team | + 42 | 3 | Sylvain Chavanel | Quick·Step Cycling Team | s.t. |
We headed to the RvV with Lars Bak leading the team, and the aim of a top 20 finish. Sadly we missed just missed out on that, with Bak finishing 21st and Hayden Roulston coming in with him in 22nd.
Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco
m | Name | Team | Time | 1 | Damiano Cunego | Lampre - ISD | 20h45'15 | 2 | Alexandre Vinokourov | Pro Team Astana | + 2'10 | 3 | Jakob Fuglsang | Leopard Trek | + 4'22 | . | Points | Damiano Cunego | Lampre - ISD | KoM | José Herrada | Caja Rural | Under 25 | Roman Kreuziger | Pro Team Astana | Team | Leopard Trek |
A top 10 GC finish with Marco Pinotti was the goal for the Pais Vasco, and he did excellently to finish 6th overall.
Paris - Roubaix
m | Name | Team | Time | 1 | Tom Boonen | Quick·Step Cycling Team | 6h10'08 | 2 | Fabian Cancellara | Leopard Trek | s.t. | 3 | Sylvain Chavanel | Quick·Step Cycling Team | + 35 |
Tom Boonen got a record equaling 4th Roubaix victory, getting his revenge on Cancellara after the RvV. Lars Bak lead the team again for HTC, finishing in a great 11th place.
Amstel Gold Race
m | Name | Team | Time | 1 | Óscar Freire | Rabobank Cycling Team | 6h30'51 | 2 | Damiano Cunego | Lampre - ISD | + 19 | 3 | Alexandre Vinokourov | Pro Team Astana | + 27 |
Óscar Freire took a shock victory for Rabobank at the Amstel Gold, breaking clear in the final 10km to take the win. Michael Albasini led HTC, and came home with a group of favourites, including Contador and Nibali, finishing 20th.
La Flèche Wallonne
m | Name | Team | Time | 1 | Leonardo Duque | Cofidis, le crédit en ligne | 4h50'19 | 2 | Joaquím Rodríguez | Katusha Team | + 59 | 3 | Samuel Sánchez | Euskaltel - Euskadi | s.t. |
Yet another shock result in the Ardennes Classics, as Leonardo Duque stayed clear of the favourites, after a long day on his own in the break. It was a very disappointing day for HTC, with the best placed rider being Peter Velits in 46th place.
Liège - Bastogne - Liège
m | Name | Team | Time | 1 | David Moncoutié | Cofidis, le crédit en ligne | 6h01'23 | 2 | Joaquím Rodríguez | Katusha Team | + 35 | 3 | Damiano Cunego | Lampre - ISD | + 1'12 |
After the two shock results in the other Ardennes Classics, this was not really something out of the norm. David Moncoutié take home the win, attacking Rodríguez on the final climb into Liège. After a disappointing Flèche Wallonne, Michael Albasini led the team, finishing 19th.

7th - 29th May 2011 - Giro d'Italia
I am not participating in the 2011 edition of the Giro d'Italia, but with it being one of the three Grand Tours in the WorldTour calendar, and I will give daily updates on how the race is doing.
HTC come to the stage race with stage wins and the Points jersey as the main target. Matt Goss will be the man, who we think will be able to do just that. He is going to be helped out by Alex Rasmussen, Hayden Roulston, Matt Brammeier and Frantisek Rabon.
The GC hopes lie on the back of Marco Pinotti, aided by Michael Albasini. Patrick Gretsch and Gatis Smukulis will work as a domestique in the flat stages, and be given a free role in the Mountains.
