Stage 4

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0014-19.jpg

The first big day for the GC contenders, with an ascent finish, being the second of two difficult climbs!

The morning breakaway initially, contained just one man! he broke away after 25km of racing, but despite going solo, he was still heavily marked! The reason- his name. Fabian Cancellara.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0009-35.png

He showed he's strong, by opening a 5minute gap, by the base of the first major climb, and unsurprisingly, many riders wanted to try and join him, a second group was able to form around Fabian, the only other big name present was Andreas Kloden of Radioshack, currently 4th in the GC.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0012-30.png

The group were traced as they bridged the gap, and the time difference was just 2'42" on the summit, the three biggest favourites decided that weas the time to attack, Andy Schleck, Cadel Evans and Lance Armstrong all moved away from the pack, followed by Rodriguez.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0014-23.png

It was at the base of the final climb, that the two groups joined, it was clear Fabian had nothing left, he quickly got dropped by his companions, as the large group moved up the mountain.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0016-17.png

However, the main contenders didn't like the large group that was together with them, so the big 4, Evans, Schleck, Armstrong and Rodriguez, upped the pace, quickly dropping the rest.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0018-15.png

Into the final straight, it was still all together, Schleck looked strongest, and was pulling away, whilst Armstrong held the wheel of Joaquin Rodriguez.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0019-19.png

And that was the order on the podium, Schleck takes a solid stage win, and with it the yellow jersey, Armstrong moves up to 3rd on the GC, well inside our top 5 sponsor goal!

Stage 11

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0004-24.jpg

One for the punchers, or the break today, a difficult route containing many short climbs, but only 155km in length, it seems well suited to the break.

Pate was once again our man for the breakaway today, his goal was simple, to take the lead in the KOM back from Scarponi, and back to it's rightful (Wink) place- on an Exxon back.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0003-27.jpg

Todays break was large, and it set a high pace within, Pate won the first 3 KOM sprints, and with 40km to go, the lead of the reduced break, was still over 7minutes!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0004-28.jpg

It was clear with 5km to go, the break would take the day, they had been massively closed down, just 2minutes ahead, but the gap was enough, Pate was 4th back in the line, but his legs were fairly tired, following his efforts in the KOM contest.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0007-26.jpg

Meanwhile at the back, the Punchers and GC men were coming forwards, Horner found Albasini's wheel, fighting for 8th place.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0008-33.jpg

Ruggero Marzoli is the strongest man in the breakaway, he takes a stage win for Acqua & Sapone, Danny Pate is able to hold on for 4th place, and collects his real reward of the day, the Maglia Verde, he is "King of the Mountains"

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0010-34.jpg

Horner takes another top 10 today, he is showing very good form as we pass the halfway stage, and the penultimate flat stage in week 2.

Stage 12

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0005-26.jpg

The last genuine easy day of the tour, and as such, no one was really willing to put in an effort, as a result a large breakaway (13) men was allowed clear, and fought out the stage amongst themselves.

Caleb Fairly was our man for the day, he's had a quiet race as one of our doméstiques, so he jumped at the chance to get involved in the break, and he can add 4th place in a stage at a Grand Tour, to his palmarés!

Stage 5

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0015-18.jpg

The race today, sees a sharp climb 40km from the finish, this may break up the pack, or we may see a group sprint, depending on the work rate of the top climbers.

The two man breakaway formed early in the stage, Jonathon Tiernan-Locke, joins Dominik Nerz out in front of the peloton, where they opened a gap of 5minutes at peak.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0016-16.jpg

The peloton however pulled it all back together today, Farrar was the only sprinter still in the 40man group, Armstrong and Louder nursed him over the climbs but his legs were suffering none the less, he would struggle to win a sprint, as we had hoped at the beginning of the day.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0018-14.jpg

With 10km to go however, Cadel Evans showed he had rather different plans for the day, he attacked, and managed to open a gap to everyone, Leopard were doing the chase work with help from us here at Exxon, but in the end, the attack was too strong, and Evans swaps the Australian NC jersey for the leader tomorrow!

We just had nothing left after that climb today, we'd hoped for a sprint, and Evans showed his strength, taking on Exxon, Leopard and Katusha at the end, to take a stage and the leaders jersey, tomorrows TT will play into his favour as well, it will be hard to bring him back, though the TT may give us a chance to improve on 4th place!

Stage 6

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0016-14.jpg

The TT is one of two final opportunities for the Stage Racers to improve there GC placing, the route is long and slightly hilly, and we hoped to move past Schleck and Rodriguez today, as our TT skills should benefit us somewhat.

The big surprise of the day today, was Tyler Farrar, hanging on for 10th spot in the TT! today went towards perfectly for us here, Armstrong did enough on the route to move into second place, the only shame, is the strength which Cadel Evans showed to come in second, he increases his GC lead to over a minute with 2 days to go, we will be hard pressed to close the gap, but 2nd is still a very strong position, and it's good to see Lance finally finding some form!

Stage 13

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0006-23.jpg

And there here! The Alps have arrived, bringing some real challenges for the riders, and it will be a hard battle for the next week as the climbers really start to shine on these sharp ascents. We start today with the Austrian Grossglockner!

The breakaway today, was a 4 man group, all mad! and intending to carry the attack all the way to the finish line and glory...

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0001-35.jpg

The attack was successful, and the pack slowed down, Lampre featured near the front, but no more drama came until the first descent of the day, Benat Intxausti, had led the -25 competition from day one, but he crashed hard, and lost over 10minutes on the men out in front today, a real shame as he has been showing good form, but Movistar wouldn't send men back to help the young spaniard, he loses the Jersey, and his high GC placing.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0002-28.jpg

Back out in front, The break split again, Cioni (Sky) and Miholjevic (A & S) forced too higher pace on the second climb, dropping there companions, Faiers and Le Lay.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0005-29.jpg

Today was also the end of the road for Caleb Fairly, he has worked hard for the team, his breakaway yesterday was his Addio a la Giro, he doesn't yet have the legs for the big climbs that lie ahead for the rest of the race, and so he drops out so that he can prepare for the Tour De France, where he may well play a very similar role.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0007-27.jpg

On the ascent of the Grossglockner, the pace was high right from the start, Horner was well positioned near the front avoiding splits, and the gap to the break was dwindling, a matter of time before the attacks start?

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0008-34.jpg

Indeed, once again, Basso makes an early attack in an ascent finish, this time however, the opposition were more wary, sitting in the pack with Nibali, and relying on team mates to close the gap.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0010-35.jpg

Eventually, the time came, Scarponi attacked, thundering away from the peloton, Horner did well and hung on with the main group, these much longer climbs are less to his fancy, and the main favourites moved towards Basso as the finish came into view.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0011-24.jpg

Scarponi, has hit some glistening form at the perfect time, he timed his attack to perfection, moving past Basso, and climbing away from the competition, he takes another stage today, further increasing his GC lead.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0012-32.jpg

The main favourites followed him in steadily, 17" back came Basso, another rider in sparkling form, followed by Garzelli and Nibali at 35", Horner was in the next group back again, along with Sanchéz and Vinokourov, taking 7th place in the stage, moving to 6th place overall.

Word From Chris: "Wow, this is tough, the stages from now to the finish are all menacing, no rest for the wicked... It was a shame to see Caleb go today, but it had been the team plan, and his legs are young, he is still developing at the moment.

Tomorrow is arguably the hardest day of the race, and doesn't really suit my climbing style, for me, it's just a case of hanging on as best i can, there are more days for me to come!"

Sometimes, i really hate this game. It wouldn't load the stage, so in the end i had to Detailed Sim it, The result was pretty good, but on the queen stage of the race, i wanted to to play it you stupid game.

The day is the big one for the GC men, the ascent of Mt Baldy will be the last chance to shake up the general classification.

Exxon-Duke as a whole were a credit here today, they brought back the morning break along with BMC, and controlled the attacks on the climbs beautifully, Armstrong then rode away from the pack along with one of the best climbers currently riding anywhere in the world, Lance and Andy Schleck. The duo opened a gap of 16" to 3rd place, and 28" on Cadel Evans, before Andy outsprinted Lance to take the stage win,the gap is much smaller, but can we close 20" on a fairly flat stage?

Stage 14

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0007-23.jpg

The final day of week 2, and possibly the hardest of this race, the ascent of the Monte Crostis is a challenge which will refine the peloton, before the riders reach the main climb of the day, the 11.9km 9% average, Monte Zoncolan and the finish line.

11 men formed the breakaway today, Saxobank clearly felt the breakaway had a good chance today, they sent both Gustav Larsson and and Jonas Jorgensen into the breakaway, along with our man Danny Pate, donning the Green King of the Mountains jersey as Scarpo is wearing Pink.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0001-36.jpg

Pate made good use of this breakaway, he collected the first 3 KOM sprints, as he continues to take the fight to Lampre's leader in the KOM competition.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0002-29.jpg

It was a sign of how difficult this stage is, that by the base of Monte Crostis, the peloton had already fallen to just 59riders, and all but 3 men from the break had been caught, including Danny Pate, who was feeling the effects of consecutive breaks.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0003-28.jpg

Included in the men left behind, were two of the GC men, both Cunego and Basso had fallen away during the race, leaving there leaders Nibali and Scarponi isolated from there main helper for the first time this race.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0005-30.jpg

As the group started the Zoncolan, Horner was the only man remaining for Exxon, but his legs were good, Zabriskie and Zwizanski had sacrificed there legs to get him up the Monte Crostis in good shape.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0006-25.jpg

6 turns left, and the group was down to just 12 of the favourites, Vinokourov was starting slide away along with Bruseghin, Fuglsang, and Caruso of Katusha. Anyone with legs left would surely go soon, and exploit this opportunity to reduce the group size.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0009-36.jpg

No attack was needed, 8 of the group just blew up with 3 turns left, Horner, Scarponi, Sanchéz and Garzelli suddenly found daylight between themselves and the rest of the pack, and Horner was still looking strong!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0010-36.jpg

Garzelli may lack the ability to Time trial, but it's clear that he knows how to climb, he outsprinted his contenders to pick up the stage win here, and Horner also showed his strength once more, outsprinting Sanchéz and Scarponi, to pick up 2nd place!

DS Comments: Wow, Chris may be a veteran in the cycling world, but he's having a fantastic season, this stage moves him to 2nd place in the GC! Not a bad way to continue, following his success in La Fleche Wallonne!

As a measure of how hard today was, we saw 33 men drop out after missing the time split, Quickstep are the worst hit of the teams here, they lost 5 men from there side! We managed to avoid any losses today, moving us further up the team rankings!

Amazing race for Chris. Now to kill Scarponi the rest of the way through!

No antón to get in the way in this story!
This time its Scarponi, i'll put up the week review and 3rd week introduction in a while, you'll see that the chase is going to be difficult!

With the Zoncolan out of the way, the second week comes to its conclusion, just 7 days more face the riders, but the third week is arguably the hardest, and will be a sure test of how strong the legs are!

General Classification

Currently, Michele Scarponi dominates the GC, he has been ever-present at the front during mountain days, as is shown by his huge lead in the General Classification!

Chris Horner is really sparkling this season, and his Giro has been no exception, he came with a target of top 10, and is currently 2nd! let's hope he can maintain this form for another week, as he finished the first half of his season, returning after the TdF, for the Autumn Classics, and possibly La Vuelta.

Points Jersey

Unsurprisingly given the recent stages, the sprinters have gone home, after a fruitless first week, leaving the climbers leading the Points competition as well! Scarponi has won stages as well as climbing solidly, he leads the Sprints competition, ahead of second place Cararra, by over 50 points!

King of the Mountains

What a shock, this name must be getting repetitive! Scarponi leads the King of the Mountains, despite our best efforts, We hold second and third, but The stage finishes are where the big points are, and this has been the reason for Scarpo's success.

Scarponi is too old for this classification, but that doesn't stop the tide of Lampre, they are the team to beat, (or currently - lose to) and it is Simon Spilak who leads the youth competition, collecting the jersey after Intxausti fell.

Week 3

Now to take a look at what Italy has to offer over the next week, as we head towards the finish, and Glory for whoever controls the Maglia Rosa.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/stage15-1.jpg

If Stage 14 has a competitor for the title of "Queen Stage" it is this one, following the day after, and at 226km long, with 6500metres of ascent, spread over 61km of climbing, this will make even the toughest legs burn towards the end!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/stage16-1.jpg

Following that, we have another Mountain day, this time, a 13km TT, whilst this will be a much shorter day in the saddle, the riders cannot afford to relax here, today could make or break someones tour!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/stage17-1.jpg

This week refuses to let up, Stage 17 is classed as... Flat?!? The days contains 4500m of climbing, and max gradients just shy of 25% this will not be the relaxing day for the sprinters, that a "Flat" stage would suggest!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/stage18-1.jpg

The closest thing to a break in this relentless week in the saddle, this stage is just 147km in length, however, the 1.3km of ascent will still be likely to break up the GC, and the riders will have to be on there guard against attacks!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/stage19-1.jpg

Back to the climbs, they wouldn;t actually let the riders have a "Rest" after all Pfft Yet another ascent finish here, the final climb, 15km at an average of 5.9% is more gentle than many on offer, but will still provide a chance to improve a GC placing!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/stage20-1.jpg

The last day on a standard road bike, 3.3km of ascent, with a short but fast descent, between the main climb of the day, and the final, more steady ascent finish. The length could play a part today, 242km in the saddle, on already exhausted legs!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/stage21-1.jpg

And finally, we arrive in Milan, for a 30km TT, where the race will be decided. This is one of the hardest weeks of any race in the calendar, so, current positions will have many opportunities to shift over the next 7days.

Stage 8

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0018-13.jpg

Today sees the conclusion of the Tour of California, we hold 3rd place in the GC going into today, just 4" behind Schleck, and Farrar sits in 4th place in the points competition, despite 2 stage wins!

The morning break today consisted of just one man, bet you can't guess the name!

No really, go on try...

Lance Armstrong! the day seemed doomed to a bunch sprint, and with Lance just 4" behind second, the plan was to breakaway, win the intermediate sprint, before tucking back into the pack, with 2nd place in the overall.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0008-35.jpg

What's more, It worked! Armstrong was marked, but he wasn't brought back by the BMC guys until after the sprint, meaning that Schleck would have to make do with the bottom spot on the podium!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0009-37.jpg

Apart from Lance's attack, the day was a largely boring affair, and as we entered the final 3km of the stage, Tyler was neatly tucked in behind the men leading out the pack, namely, Cadel Evans!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0012-34.jpg

The climbers gave it a good go, but there was no way they could hold off a genuine sprinter on such a short flat day, Tyler was the only sprinter in a good position, and easily picks up a 3rd stage win, to round up a great all round race for Team Exxon-Duke!

Armstrong finally comes into his own here in California, it was great to see him competing effectively with the very best, a good sign ahead of the TdF.
Lance has been suffering with poor morale since his failure to make an impact with this second return, but he shows today that he still has what it takes!

We saw some unusual sprints here, and the number of uphill days and TT's mean that Tyler was unable to maintain his grasp upon the jersey, none the less, he continues a strong season, with 3 more stage victories, whilst his rivals really seem to be struggling to get going!

Kloden's aggressive racing lands him the top spot in the KOM contest, he may not have been at the top in the GC, but by joining breaks, and climbing in peak fitness, Andreas rewards Radioshack, with the KOM jersey.

Astana had a fruitless race, due to the lack of a real GC leader, they thus turned there target towards the youth jersey, which Masciarelli totally dominated, Stetina shows signs of improvement at this point of the season, he is still a fledgling rider, but his climbing is steadily improving, and he shows a lot of potential in this area.

Great way to finish with a Farrar victory Smile

And a well deserved 2nd place overall for Lance Wink

This is going to be a real toughy, with 6.1km of ascent, and max gradients of well into the 20%'s!

The break was a tentative affair today, forming after 35km of racing, most teams placed a weaker man from there side into the breakaway, Cioni of Sky was the best climber, and best placed 45minutes down!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0001-37.jpg

Surprisingly, Acqua&Sapone took on a large proportion of the work here today, Garzelli was clearly feeling good, because he had most of his team at the front driving a high pace and reeling in the break, despite there lack of danger towards the GC.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0004-29.jpg

On the penultimate climb, the break was brought back, and the attacks began, surprisingly, Scarponi was the first man to go onto the attack, but it soon became clear why!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0011-25.jpg

Scarponi just rode away from the rest, we tried to follow, and an elite group of 4 formed behind him, but Scarpo was already 45" up the rode, and showing no signs of slowing...

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0013-33.jpg

This second group grew as the rest of the big favourites soloed away from the peloton over the summit of the penultimate climb, but Scarponi just kept going, his lead now 1'20". This might spell the end of the Race for the Maglia Rosa, unless Scarponi blows up...

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0014-24.jpg

On the final climb, Scarponi showed the rest, that he hadn't been trying on the previous climb, he puts in another burst, and opens the gap to over 3minutes! The favourites group meanwhile starts to thin out, as the lesser climbers fall away due to the ferocious pace

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0015-23.jpg

With 7km left to ride in the second group, it's down to just 3men, Sanchéz, Vinokourov, and Horner. Great news in terms of second place, 3rd-5th have fallen away, so we will hopefully increase the gap slightly.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0018-19.jpg

Scarponi has 3km left, and his legs finally seem to be waning, the lead now, 5'30! but he is tiring, and the 3 behind are finally making some headway...

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0019-21.jpg

Onto the gravel go the trio, Horner is pace-setting, trying to limit losses to Scarponi, with 1.5km the gap is back under 5minutes, the race is over for first, but the quicker Horner can keep the pace, the higher his gap over 3rd place!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0022-9.jpg

And 4'46 ahead of him, Scarponi can zip up his jersey, throw his arms high into the air, and celebrate a great victory today, and in all likelihood, also the Giro D'Italia! No one could keep up with his high pace, and he now holds more than 8minutes over second place!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0023-9.jpg

It was clear in the second group, that Chris Horner was the only man with strength to sprint, the two held with him, but Horner manages to hold off there charge, and picks up consecutive second places, really starting to solidify his grasp on second place!

Garzelli was 26" behind Horner to the summit, stretching the gap to 45" now, and 4th place is Sanchéz at 53".

Words from Chris: Wow, well, that pretty much sorts that out then! The 3 of us were all chasing hard, and we kept a really high pace, despite several sections in the 15-20% region!

Michele has been a class above so far, and showed that here today, and to open a gap of almost 5minutes just shows how strong a climber he really is!

The task for me now is simple, I'm 45" ahead of third place, and I want to try and keep that gap for the rest of the race, 2nd in any GT, is an absolutely fantastic result, especially considering im 39, but to do it in this race, with such a difficult route, that'd be a icing on the cake of what has already been a fantastic season!

Buzzing.

Today is in many ways a chance to recover the legs, with a much shorter day in the saddle, just 13km, however, this Mountain TT will be hard fought, and every one of the GC contenders will be fighting it out, trying to consolidate there places!

The early lead, was taken by Ruben Pérez, he has been present in many breakaways, and managed to set a good early time of, 32'43"

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0026-6.jpg

The next guy to make a serious dent in this time, was Dario Cioni, shaving a full 47" off the time, it was clear there was a lot still to be got out of the course!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0030-5.jpg

The times kept on falling, but by the time we reached the main contenders for the GC, It was Radioshacks Yaroslav Popovych who held the lead, with a final time of 40'16. Now it was time to see what the men from the top 25 could do to make a dent in this time.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0034-4.jpg

30'22 From Ivan Basso was looking strong, with 15 to go, he had dented Popo's time, and had beaten some great TTists, such as Pinotti, Team mate Nibali, and Damiano Cunego.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0038-2.jpg

The top 5.
Going into today, the top 5 was 1.Scarponi, 2.Horner 3.Garzelli 4.Sanchéz 5.Vinokourov

Vino was best with just 2 riders left to set off, 30'14 was yet another large decrease, and This would be a hard time to beat!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0042-1.jpg

On second thoughts, perhaps not! Horner was not going too strongly as he reached the Intermediate Checkpoint, well behind the pace, however, he really pushed it up a gear on the climb, and shaved 20" off of Vinokourovs time!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0045-1.jpg

Seeing this, we were shocked? annoyed? Chris certainly wasn't happy. Scarponi managed to more than match Chris on the TT, finishing with the fastest time of the day, 29'52. He's in fantastic form, and this TT has been no different.

Yet again, we see a great ride from Horner pipped at the post by the flying Italian, there is consolation to be taken from this day though, Horners' lead over 3rd continues to grow, now standing at 1'07, and the days are starting to run out for those men behind who are chasing him down.

One of the longest days of the tour follows the TT. 242km in length, but the hills are by the standards of this week "Gentle" HA. Still a killer, and we won't be seeing the sprinters competing this "Flat" day.

The morning break consisted of 4 men today, they were mostly from the teams who have been severly reduced in number, such as Larsson of Saxobank, but Izagirre of Euskaltel also found his way into the break, as they pulled away from the pack.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0051-1.jpg

Over the first 100km, it became clear, that Izagirre didn't have the legs for the breakaway, he dropped back into the peloton, as 4 became 3.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0052-1.jpg

Despite not being a threat for the overall, the group ran out of legs, and the gap disappeared, they were caught by the 54man peloton over the main climb of the day, and this signalled the beginning of a more relaxed day in the saddle, Lampre set a slowish pace, and everyone was able to recover there legs somewhat.

The next action, came on the hill just 5km from home, Scarponi attacked again, followed by Sanchéz and Garzelli, they held a 30" gap over the summit, Horner simply didn't have the legs to follow, and prayed the pack would reel them back in.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0061.jpg

The break stayed away, but an attempt to bridge, by Vinokourov and Nibali alleviated the time gap by enough to stop the peloton receiving a different time, and Horner maintains his 45" gap over Garzelli, 4 days to go. Scarponi is un beatable. even in this more relaxed day, he easily broke away, and outsprinted his companions, collecting his 6th stage victory of the race.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/stage18.jpg

Stage 18 will almost certainly be used as a rest, 146km and only one hill be a wonderful sight to the pack, and of the remaining days, today seems the one most likely to see a breakaway victory, if anyone has the legs to try and get away that is!

Unsurprisingly, 12men formed a breakaway today, one of the largest we have seen during the race, including Kanstantin Siutsou, Russel Downing, Kevin De Weert, and Andréa Noe.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0064.jpg

No one was interested in chasing the break today, we helped out to keep the lead below 15minutes, along with a couple of other sides, but they could have the stage win today. Siutsou and Downing showed they had more left than the rest, and just rode away from the break on the climb, would it be HTC or Sky taking the stage win today?

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0068.jpg

Under the Flamme Rouge, and Downing is leading out the sprint, he is the stronger of the Duo, but Siutsou is better placed, this looks like it's going to be tight!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0069.jpg

Russ Downing holds on to the line! Sky have had a rough Giro, bringing a fairly weak squad, so they will be pleased to take a stage victory home with them.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0070.jpg

The rest of the break followed in 2'20" behind, and the pack was 12minutes behind today, after a much more relaxed pace. It's back to the mountains tomorrow, for 2 final days before we arrive in Milan for the final Time Trial.

The teams legs are really starting to wane now, and we will be glad to get past this race, and have a chance to relax for a couple of weeks. It's a credit to all of the riders, that they're still here at this late sage, no one has abandoned, other than Caleb Fairly, who withdrew, to train for La Tour, and we are one of the teams who are still near full strength!
