Thanks a lot for the congratulations guys! I really appreciate the bananas, although laidbackmarc has a point, they should worship really important events/success, otherwise they lose a bit of their value. Anyway, I hope that I'll earn some more during the season.

 January 28, 2012 - Giro della Calabria
In its long history since 1920, the Giro della Calabria has been both a one day classic and a stage race over 2 – 4 days. The race is dominated by the Italian teams and not surprisingly, the record winner is Italian as well: Michele Dancelli won the race three times in a row from 1966.
The course of this year leads the riders over three rather hilly stages. The first two ones will probably be decisive with one hilly ascent finish and one hill close to the finish, while the final climb on stage three is probably too far away from the goal to make much of a difference.

Not just because of his good performances in Down Under, Damiano Cunego is the main overall contender for this race. He's also by far the best puncheur of the starting field. His weak point might be his team, still another rider on top of the podium would be a surprise.
Also, the newly created Catalonian team TV3 gives their debut in this race. Let's see how they'll do.
With Damiano Cunego, we have the top favorite for the overall and that's what we aim for. Although Juraj Sagan and Thomas Peterson are not quite the best support, we're confident to do very well.
The day starts very hectic as many attacks are made but no one really succeeded. Eventually, we manage to get Cameron Wurf into a three men leading group. They have a maximum advance of six minutes and still hold almost 3 minutes when they hit the last 15 ascending kilometers.
As they face the last, really steep 4 kilometers, the advance shrinks down to 1'30. Cameron Wurf, knowing he has the top favorite in his team back in the pack, relaxes and doesn't make much pace. And it is exactly that favorite, Damiano Cunego, who makes the first move from the pack with 3,5 km to go. With a couple of strong kicks, he catches up with the escapees and soon overtakes them. No response from the other teams.
As the escapees are finally caught, Bosisio (Acqua) and Tonti (Pisanellastoria) attackes, but Cunego is already way ahead and takes an easy win.
Damiano Cunego was the favorite and he did as expected.

This time, already this first breakaway try was successful. Along with two other guys, Juraj Sagan gets away. They get a maximum advance of 11 minutes but are caught a bit before the top of the final climb.
Two kilometers from the top of that ascent, Damiano Cunego again makes his move. He enters the last 10 flat kilometers with an advance of 1'20 in front of yesterday's runner-ups Bosisio and Tonti. His second stage win in a row is safe. Until the finish line, he extends his lead to more than 2 minutes, when Andrea Tonti outsprints Gabriele Bosisio for place two.
Complete domination – Damiano Cunego is unstoppable.

The last hilly stage isn't as hard as the previous two but the overall is decided anway. Thomas Peterson is our man in the break and as no other team decides to chase, the group makes it to the line. Unfortunatly, Peterson really isn't a good sprinter and comes in only sixth of seven. Vacansoleil's Santo Anza wins the stage.
Damiano Cunego sets a late attack and creates a small gap. Although he doesn't get a time gap, he saves some meters and finishes eigth, again being the first of the favorites.
No Cunego triple but still an Italian win – Santo Anza is the fastest escapee.

Thank you all for the nice feedback. On the one hand, it was indeed a complete domination by Cunego (@ rorzcp: I even checked the difficulty because it went so good, I can assure you it's hard ). But on the other hand, you have to see that Cunego was by far the best puncheur (81 vs 76 of Bosisio etc) and he is in a pretty good shape after the Tour Down Under. So I sort of expected these results.

The most important win was scored by Franco Pellizotti (Katusha) in Australia. Dominik Nerz achieved his first professional win ever and thus probably the most surprising result of this month.
The World Tour ranking is shaped by the Tour Down Under. Pellizotti, Cunego and Bakelandts were on the podium in Australia and lead here. Due to Mauro Finetto's contribution, Liquigas begins the new season as they finishes the previous: On top!
The Liquigas domination is even stronger in the CQ Ranking. With Langkawi winner Dominik Nerz on 3, the Italian team provides 3 out of the top 4 riders here. Katusha and Lampre are the best of the rest at the moment, they also started very well.
In the fight for promotion, the French equipe Saur had a great kick-off. Geox and Ag2r, two of the top favorites, also fill high places from the start. NetApp will have problems to keep that Top 5 spot.
At the risk of repeating myself – Liquigas' start in 2012 was just impressive. Already seven wins, among them three overall, within one month speak for themselves. The newly formed team GreenEdge also had a more than decent first month of existence. Still, we have to consider that all those rankings can and will change a lot in the upcoming nine months.
Usually, the Tour Down Under winner gets this award. But with his dominance in Calabria, TdU runner-up Damiano Cunego outshines Pellizotti and takes this well deserved award. Cameron Meyer won the young riders classification in Australia and came in fourth in the Australian ITT championship. Nevertheless, I think a certain German youngster would have deserved this award as well.

Roman Kreuziger, who will give his comeback for Liquigas, and Damiano Cunego are going to use this month as a preparation for the bigger races in March. Paolo Longo Borghini and Daniel Oss start the cobblestone season. Dominik Nerz will assist his leaders Cunego and Kreuziger and might get a chance to ride on his one once or twice.

Btw: Class 2.6-races?
It's a pity that the Tour de Langkawi ended on February 1st and not in January, otherwise I think Dominik would have taken the award. And yeah, I don't know what's up with the categories, it's like that since I installed the PCMDaily DB. But I really don't mind about that

@ FreitasPCM: The upcoming races are more hilly than mountainous so it's not Dominik's favourite terrain, but as he's in a nice shape, he should be able to do something.

Sponsor negotiations in full play – Liquigas and Ag2r expiring
Not only in racing aspects, but also in terms of business negotiations, the new season is in full swing. Here's a summary of the recent events:
Expiring Contracts
After seven pretty successful years, the Italian company Liquigas is still unsure wether or not to extend their sponsorship. A spokesman announced that they are in a dilemma here, as in the circumstances of the international financial crisis, they couldn't afford the money any longer. Still, if they would receive a certain amount of favorable comments from the team's fans, they might be willing to invest the money anyway. In this unique case, the fans get to decide the future sponsor of their team!
The American bike manufacturer Cannondale used pretty much the same words to explain their withdrawal after only one year. Nevertheless, they announced to follow Liquigas for another period in case they continue their sponsorship, as Cannondale announced that they always appreciated the professional and friendly cooperation.
Regardless of Liquigas and Cannondale, the team's future is certain – the team and its management will stay together and the World Tour license will be kept. Employees are already looking for new sponsors in both Italy and the United States, just in case.
The biggest certain sponsor change that has been announced in the previous days concerns the French team Ag2r – La Mondiale. The assurance company won't extend the contract with the team that got relegated into Continental Tour last season. A new sponsor is yet to be announced.
Renewed Contracts
The biggest team that could recently announce its sponsor to extend the contract is the Russian team Katusha.
The Russian conglomerate is obviously serious in their goal to support Russian cycling. They signed a new contract until the year 2014. Also, their development team Itera Katusha will continue to exist.
