A hilly stage. Only one real hill on the course but always up and down in the last 40 km.

Today's breakaway consisted out of 12 riders. Most important are Konig, Larsson and Amador.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/asturias43.jpg

The break could start the categorised climb with an advantage of 9' but due to the work of Brändle and Kozontchuk, the gap decreased to 4' after the descent.

Since no team started helping, Valls made an attack. The other teams didn't want him to get away so they immediately started chasing. His move wasn't susccesfull but made the other teams work.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/asturias45.jpg

Amador attacked out of the front group and has a 40" gap on the others with 15 km to go. The pack is 1'30" behind Amador. The escapees will fight for the win today.

Amador get's caught under the flamme rouge. It seems like Coenen is the fastest of the break.

But he lost his speed and get passed by Cardoso in the last metres. A very nice victory for the Portuguese.

The favourites all finish together in a group of around 50 riders. Tomorrow's stage will be descisive.

The GP Industria & Artigianato is a one day classic in Italy. The profile is quite hilly but the last 25 km are downhill and flat so either a very strong attack or a sprint by a small group. Sastre is a favourite but Garzelli is in a very good form after the Trentino.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/industria3.jpg

Marko Kump is in the break today. Faili, Salerno and Ascani are good puncheurs so they already dropped some of the other escapees.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/industria4.jpg

The first move out of the pack is by Garcia and Rasmussen. They are not the best riders so try something from a little more far out.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/industria5.jpg

Sastre isn't feeling very well so he attacks at the foot of the long hill just to train a bit for the Giro.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/industria6.jpg

The first reaction comes near the end of that hill. Moreno, Le Mevel and Bertagnolli could create a gap to the other favourites. Sastre is still a minute in front of this group.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/industria7.jpg

Garzelli made a splashing attack on the next hill passing not only the trio but also Sastre. The escapees are still 2' in front but Kump is also dropped.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/industria8.jpg

Garzelli could reach the front group after the descent. The group with the other favourites is 45" behind.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/industria9.jpg

There, Sastre feels his earlier efforts and has to let the others go. He will finish 21th today.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/industria10.jpg

Garzelli could drop all the other riders and takes another victory. His form must be great with so much victories the last couple of weeks.

Vuelta Asturias: stage 5

Profile:
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/asturias51.jpg
The last stage is tough again. The race will be decided on the last 10 km, a tough hill in two parts.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/asturias52.jpg

Today's 6 escapees. Most important are Hernandez and Amador, who is in the break for the second day in a row.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/asturias53.jpg

The pace in the pack is for most of the day controlled by two teams. Caja Rural and Sky work hard for a stage win cause their leaders Lovkvist and Moreno are already 2' behind in the GC.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/asturias54.jpg

The pack starts the last hill with a deficit of 2'45" on the escapees.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/asturias55.jpg

Hernandez is the first of the escapees to pass the KoM-sprint. He has a 45" gap on the others and a good gap on the bunch.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/asturias56.jpg

Moreno, Lovkvist and Marque attacked out of the pack right before the KoM-sprint. They could create a 30" gap but would be caught on the flat stroke.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/asturias57.jpg

So the last km will be decisive for the overal. Moreno is the strongest of the favourites on the left. Wyss sprints on the right. Marque is alreay behind a little bit.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/asturias58.jpg

At the front, Hernandez could just hold of Amador to grab a stage win. He used the tactique that failed for Amador yesterday so that makes it extra hard for the Costa-Rican. A small group of favourites could create a 25" gap to the rest of the pack. Wyss was in the first group, De Waele and Marque not so he jumps over De Waele for 2nd.

April Review

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/april4.jpgi1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/april5.jpg
Almost all races were won by different riders. Only Garzelli, who won two classics and the Trentino, and Gilbert, who did the Ardennes double, won more as one race this month.

CQ-ranking:
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/april2.jpg
Gilbert is leading due to his victories in Paris-Nice, La Fleche Wallone and Liege-Bastogne-Liege. Cobo is still the first Geox-rider but dropped some spots.

CQ-ranking (Teams):
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/april3.jpg
Garmin-Cervelo is still leading, mainly due Hushovd's good results in the Cobbled Classics. Geox is10th and the 2nd Conti-team behind Landbouwkrediet.

May Preview:
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/april1.jpg
We will only be participating in one race next month, but it's a big one: The Giro d'Italia.

good luck!

Doing great so far! Good luck in the Giro. What are your goals? The GC or stage wins? GC is extremely tough in this Giro, unless you have a great climber (Menchov? Cobo?), and there are a lot of chances for stage wins!

Thanks Avin and Alexanderlens. I looked forward to the Giro since the start of the career so let's hope it's very intresting!

Giro d'Italia: preview1, Route

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/girologo.jpg

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Route1.jpg

The Giro will start in Turin. The strength of the teams will be tested in a 20 km TTT around Turin. The next couple of days will see the Giro moving southward following the Tyrrhenian Sea. Those stages are mostly categorised as flat but that doesn't mean the stage will end in a sprint cause there always is a small hill in the last 40 kms which could surprise the sprinters. Stage 5 will be very exciting in Tuscany riding over the famous 'Strade Bianche' (White roads).

The GC-contenders will probably be seen for the first time on the 7th stage on a short stage finishing on the Montevergine di Mercogliano. After another flat stage on the Italian mainland, the last week will end on Sicilie with a very exciting stage which has two ascents of the Etna-vulcan. The riders will then get a rest day, used for a transfer to Termoli were the Giro moves up again following the Adriatic coastline.

A lot of riders will look with fear to the end of those three stages cause after that, the riders will start with the mountains. The first mountain stage will see the riders move to Austria to ascent the steep Grossglockner. Moving out of Austria again the next day, the finish lays atop the Monte Zoncolan after a tough ascent and a dangerous descent of the Monte Crostis. The next stage is seen as the queen-stage with the climbs of the Passo di Giau (the Cima Coppi), the Passo Fedaia and the finish after a steep climb with the last metres being Sterrato in Gardeccia.

The riders then get a well needed second rest day. The third week starts with a 13 km individual time trial up to the Monte Faverghere, finishing in Nevagal. The two following stages are easier but that doesn't meen they are easy. With climbs like the Tonale and the Aprica, escapees have a good chance to take a victory on these two stages.

The last stages will decide the overal. A finish in Macugnaga will probably not make too much differences but the next stage. With first the climb of Colle delle Finestre of which the last part is 'Sterrato' (Gravel roads) and the finish in Sestriere. The Giro will end in Milan with a 30 km tt which could influence the GC but not that hard due to the large amount of climbing kilometres on this year's route.

Dienblad, I hope you get your answers in the next post

Giro d'Italia: preview2, Team Geox

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/girologo.jpg

Team Geox:

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/RUS.png Denis Menchov i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/RUS.png
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/riders1.jpg
Denis will be our leader during the Giro. His goal is a podium spot but he hopes he can maybe do as good as in 2009 and win the Giro.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/SPA.png Carlos Sastre i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/SPA.png
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/riders2.jpg
Carlos will be Menchov's main Lieutenant. He can use al his experience he gained while either working or leading a team in the numerous GT's he started. The 2008 TdF-winner also can go for a stage win on one of the mountaintop finishes.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/COL.png Fabio Duarte i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/COL.png
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/riders3.jpg
Fabio started the season with one goal: the U25 jersey in the Giro but due to a crash in a preparation race, he will start the Giro with a conditional disadvantage. He will now be a good helper for Menchov during the last week of the Giro when his form is top.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/SWI.png Marcel Wyss i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/SWI.png
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/riders4.jpg
Marcel is a very good climber and has a good form, shown in Asturias. He will probably not be able to replace a good Duarte but will certainly do his part of the job on the tough stages.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/COL.png Mauricio Alberto Ardila i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/COL.png
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/riders5.jpg
Mauricio finished 15th in last years Giro but doesn't aim a good classification this year. He will be another important helper for Menchov during the mountain stages.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/SPA.png Rafael Valls i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/SPA.png
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/riders6.jpg
Rafa is a good climber who will be seen at the front of the bunch on a lot of climbs in the last week.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/SPA.png Arkaitz Duran i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/SPA.png
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/riders7.jpg
Arkaitz will do the same as Ardila and Valls. Working hard on a lot of tough climbs. He will also be important in the TTT.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/AUT.png Matthias Brändle i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/AUT.png
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/riders8.jpg
Matthias will be very important during the TTT. He will also play a role in making sure Menchov doesn't lose time in the flat stages.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/RUS.png Dimitriy Kozontchuk i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/RUS.png
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/riders9.jpg
Dimitriy might well be the most important rider for Menchov. He will protect his countryman during the whole Giro and will help him everywhere where needed.

I think this team is very strong. There will probably not be another team with this much climbers so a good placing in the teams ranking is also a goal.

Presentaion of the other teams will be during the TTT

I like you're way of making previews! Do you take a sprinter with you or only helpers for Menchov?

Giro d'Italia: stage 1

Venaria Reale - Torino : 19.1 km

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/stage11.jpg

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/stage12.jpg

The Giro starts with a 20 km TTT around Turin. Our goal is to limit the losses on the other GC-contenders.

59. i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/SWI.pngM.Wyss

Team Geox-TMC is the first team to start. They start quite slowly but finish strong due to a good Menchov. Their time: 25'44"

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/USA.png Team RadioShack i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/USA.png

189. i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/UKR.pngY.Popovych

The days Popovych and Zubeldia could compete for a top 5 in a GT are far gone. The same can be said about McEwen and Hunter in the sprints. This team ofcourse peaks to the Tour so some minor riders have to start here.

They still have some good TT'ers and are known to be a good team in this work but they dissappoint and finish with a time of 25"52"

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/NED.png Rabobank i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/NED.png

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/stage15.jpg

91. i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/NED.pngB.Mollema
92. i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/NED.pngS.Kruijswijk
93. i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/GER.pngP.Martens
94. i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/AUS.pngM.Matthews
95. i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/GER.pngG.Niermann
96. i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/NED.pngT.Slagter
97. i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/NED.pngB.Tankink
98. i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/NED.pngL.Ten Dam
99. i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/NED.pngD.Van Winden

Rabobank brings a strong team. Both Mollema and Kruiswijk could compete for a top 10 and the U25 jersey. Helped by Ten Dam, they could also be very dangerous in the teams ranking.

They also have a lot of TTer's of the same level in this squad and that brings them a good time: 25"17'

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/SPA.png Euskaltel i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/SPA.png

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/stage16.jpg

11. i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/SPA.pngS.Sánchez
12. i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/SPA.pngI.Antón
13. i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/SPA.pngJ.Castroviejo
14. i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/SPA.pngK.Fernández
15. i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/SPA.pngM.Landa
16. i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/SPA.pngJ.J.Oroz
17. i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/SPA.pngR.Pérez
18. i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/SPA.pngA.Pérez
19. i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/SPA.pngG.Verdugo

Don't know why but Euskaltel brings their strongest squad to the Giro. With Sanchez and Anton, they have two guys who could compete for the overal victory. Fernandez is a good sprinter capable of a top 5 on a good day. Oroz, Verdugo and Castroviejo are good helpers and the Perez duo will probably be seen alot in breaks.

Bringing their storngest squad, they also have a good team for the TTT with Castroviejo and Sanchez. Their time is very good for their standard: 25'17", the same as Rabobank.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/ITA.png Androni Giacotolli i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/ITA.png

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/stage17.jpg

61. i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/VEN.pngJ.Rujano
62. i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/ITA.pngA.Bertolini
63. i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/ITA.pngR.Chiarini
64. i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/ITA.pngR.Ferrari
65. i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/ITA.pngF.Ginanni
66. i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/VEN.pngJ.Rodríguez
67. i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/ITA.pngE.Sella
68. i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/VEN.pngJ.Serpa
69. i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/ITA.pngL.Solari

Androni brings their strongest squad to their main event this season. Rujano could well be the strongest climber at the start. He can get a good overal result if he doesn't lose to much time on the flat stages and the TT. The combination of Ferrari and Ginnani could give a surprising result in the sprint. Also intresting will be to see what Sella can do in his come back in the Giro.

They are not known to be a good TTT squad but limit the losses. Their time of 25'32" is where most teams finish.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/ITA.png Farnese Vini i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/ITA.png

213. i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/ITA.pngF.Failli

219. i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/ITA.pngE.Vona

This team consists out of mainly buccaneers. There is a large chance we will see them in a lot of long breaks. Although Gatto and Guardini will probably get some help in the sprints.

They are not known to be good TT'ers and ride an average time: 25'53"

Acqua e Sapone is lead by good old Stefano Garzelli. But he proved last month that you can't underestimate him by winning the Giro del Trentino. It would be very nice for him if he could get a top 10.

The TTT is not their prefered discipline and they ride one of the weaker times: 25'54"

109. i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/SLK.pngP.Velits

Team HTC-Highroad has 3 good assets in this Giro. Velits, Pinotti and Sioutsou could all take a top 10 but they will have to decide who cause that might give problems otherwise. Goss will be one of the favourites in the bunch-sprints.

They have a very strong TTT team led by old WC Bert Grabsch. They set the new best time: 24'57".

49. i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/RUS.pngE.Vorganov

Katusha brings a strong team, led by one of the favourites for the overal Joaquim Rodriguez. He normally has a strong team behind him but it has to be seen if DiLuca really wants to be a teammate. Galimzyanov could get a very good result in one of the sprints.

They only have one good TT'er on this team, Ignatiev. But he rides very strong and they cross the line after 25'27".

179. i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/Vlag/BEL.pngJ.Vermote

This team probably has no hopes for a good result in the overal. Their only hope for a good result is a stage win by Malacarne or Pineau. Chicchi will could maybe sprint to a good result but those chances are slim.

They have some good baroudeurs who can make the team ride a good TTT. Their time is 25'32"

Another team of buccaneers. Marcato or Carrara could get a stage win after an attack. Bozic can take a stage win in the sprint when he has a good day.

They don't have any good TT'ers here so there time isn't special: 25'32"

Team BMC has the top favourite for this years Giro d'Italia. Cadel Evans tries to win his first GC ever. He has a strong team around him with Santambrogio, Morabito, Kroon and Moinard.

This team doesn't have any good TT'ers except for Evans. He leads his team to a time of 25'43".

Team Sky doesn't bring a very strong team to the Giro. Lokvist is probably not good enough to get a good overal and Swift might only challenge for a top 5 in the sprints.

Team Sky is known to be a good TTT team and they ride a good time: 25'9"

Some goot TT'ers in this team so a good time can be expected. They dissapoint with a time of 25'46"

Team Movistar brings a good squad with not only Plaza but also Lopez and Bruseghin. A top will be tough for either of them though. Rojas will be a top favourite in the flat stages but winning is very tough for him.

Movistar already won the Tirreno-Adriatico TTT this year and ride very strong again. Their time is 25'05"

Scarponi finished 4th last year and certainly wants a podium this year. And why not win the Giro? He doesn't have a strong squad around him with only Ulissi being a notable climber. Petacchi probably wants to win a couple of stages in the first week so the team will also have to work for him.

Garmin brings a strong squad. Vandevelde could get a top 10 in the overal but there is a big chance he crashes out. Farrar will fight against pettacchi to get stage wins in the sprints in the first week.

Garmin is known to be a very good TTT team but they don't ride very strong today. They finish after 25'27".

That means that Team HTC-Highroad wins today. They were the only team to set a time under the 25' mark!

We did better as expected. HTC was very strong but we didn't lose more than 20" on most of the other favourites. We started the Giro the right way.

Good luck.

Menchov looks strong and in the right shape to begin.

Great presentation, it will be hard fight for the podium, especially Euskatel super-duo and then Basso,Scarponi, Rodriguez, Rujano.
Good luck in that Smile
I'll be back

Spilak23
Thanks alot all! The startlist is indeed very strong with some surprising starts from Evans, Rodriguez and the Euskaltel duo but Menchov will probably finish around the 5th place. The goal reamains top 3 tough.
