Double Feature | THE END
Schleck96
I would like to see Eric coming back.

Flair
I cant wait to see Willy end up winning as he domestiques in prep for a triathalon event Pfft

Ian Butler
sutty68 - Thanks a lot!

Schleck96 - That won't be happening, though. 100% sure Smile

Flair - That's not out of the question Pfft just a little Tour de France as a prep race Grin

Milan - San Remo 2014

Welcome in Italy! It's the evening of Milan - San Remo and I've found the time to report to you!

Last year I took a surprising sixth, in my first participation. Cancellara won the race.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/sanremo01_zps83e60d1d.jpg

The weather was good, there was sun and the temperatures were better than expected. I had an amazing talk with Peter Sagan, where we made a bet against each other about who'd win Milan - San Remo first, me or him! Or at least I think it was about that, my Italian isn't up to date!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/sanremo02_zpsc9ca6c23.jpg

It looked like perfect weather for a mass sprint. I was hoping for that!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/sanremo03_zps54552a3d.jpg

Things were looking up when a big part of the peloton arrived on the Poggio together.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/sanremo04_zps0537cb76.jpg

But at the bottom, Langeveld went on the attack, very unexpectedly!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/sanremo05_zps8e375fa9.jpg

I was on the second row and saw nobody reacting. I made the mistake by being to one to react. At 2.5 km from the finish, I already started my sprint.. Instead of battling for a 2nd place, I gave it away.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/sanremo06_zps635acf25.jpg

Langeveld has this race to add to his palmares, while I disappointingly finish 14th. I felt good all race and really got my hopes up...

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/sanremo07_zps6abdeb60.jpg

Well, despite my great form, I failed to cash in. The circumstances where perfect, the team got me on the Poggio all right, I had it for the taking, but it wasn't meant to be.

I hope this isn't a sign of a diminished form. The cobbled classics are coming and I'm really hoping for that first classic win, I'm ready for it!
Thanks for being here,
Stijn

Schleck96
Damn you Langeveld! Angry

Flair
Wasn't Stijns fault really. His team should have had someone to chase that down! Maybe a bit of youthful inexperience cost him today, but his form should still be good.

Jakstar22
Not a good Milan San Remo for Stijn. But he will smash the Cobbled classics

dienblad
Ian, you have turned into a lousy story writer.... No severe injuries, letal accidents, or OD's, but becoming a thriathlete??? Come on, Willy is not Lance Dopestrong?????????

I am sure Stijn will learn from that mistake Frown

Schleck96 - That was exactly my thought Pfft

Flair - That's true. Though the team was too far in the pack to do the chasing...

Jakstar22 - Let's hope sp! But at least he survived the Poggio, which is good for the future.

dienblad - I know Frown I should've let him been in an accident and have his both legs amputated... Boy this is lousy Pfft No seriously,

sutty68 - Yeah. It's just hart accepting the win is gone and sprinting for a 2nd place.

wogsrus - This! Pfft

E3 - Harelbeke 2014

Preview

Last year, Sagan finished a monster solo of more than 50 km. This year everyone will be watching out for him. He showed excellent form in San Remo already.

Tom Boonen is injured and will be out for several weeks, which opens opportunities for outsiders such as myself.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/E301_zps34151063.jpg

This race is a mini-Ronde Van Vlaanderen, so I will give it 100% and see where I end. I'm hoping for that first Classic Win!

The Race

Jan Ghyselinck got himself in the breakaway and really was the motor of the break.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/E302_zps47389c4b.jpg

This gave us some freedom in the pack. But it was dangerous and the group was splitting up. I was placed perfectly!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/E303_zps11da7aa3.jpg

When Terpstra and Chavanel attacked out of the peloton and gained a minute, things got nervous. I told Ghyselinck to stop taking turns and just hang back in the break.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/E304_zpsf417de75.jpg

Maaskant took a big turn for his account and brought the breakaway back a bit. But we were alone to work.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/E305_zps02b8a198.jpg

Because nobody was cooperating with us, we tried to shake them. Steegmans tried sticking to our wheels.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/E306_zps65bf40e6.jpg

I left both of them behind and found the breakaway ten minutes later.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/E307_zps1e9e2a1b.jpg

Jan Ghyselinck put in a brave effort and accelerated. The two of us were gone. Now, Cancellara and his team mates started pulling hard behind us.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/E308_zpscc4e9e63.jpg

On the last climb of the Kwaremont, I saw a group of three coming, and I decided not to waste anymore energy and wait for them!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/E309_zps3566dc34.jpg

Devolder, Cancellara and Breschel were the names. I was definitely the fastest of the group, but I had wasted a lot of energy already with the attack. MY best chance was the sprint, though, so I did everything possible to let that happen.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/E310_zpsde9b81da.jpg

As expected, Cancellara tried one final attack with 5 km left to go, but I countered him immediately. So it was going to end in a sprint!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/E311_zps0d4a9920.jpg

My sprint was a lot worse than usual. I felt like a diesel and Breschel was looking like the fastest for a whole while there. But then I finally passed him!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/E312_zps854d2aca.jpg

One final jump!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/E313_zpsaa01c68a.jpg

And victory at last! Unbelievable!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/E314_zps149cbdfd.jpg

I can't believe I finally did it. I won a (cobbled) classic! I hope this is the start of a beautiful classics-palmares! I'm extremely happy, it's amazing.

Aftermath

Sporza: Stijn Van Gent, many, many congratulations.
Stijn Van Gent: Thanks!
Sporza: Can you tell us about your race?
Stijn Van Gent: The weather conditions were perfect for me. Many were afraid of the cold, but I like it this way. The rain made for a hard race and that was in my advantage. On some point, Terpstra attacked. He was too dangerous to let go so I chased him. My legs were on fire so I overtook him and went solo. There was a regroup 20 km from the finish with Cancellara, Devolder and Breschel. Cancellara tried attacking but I wanted the sprint so I countered him directly.
Sporza: What can you tell us about the sprint, it was really close from where I was standing!
Stijn Van Gent: Breschel went early and I thought I had it in the pocket. But he kept going strong and, I admit, I started to panick a bit. I tried kicking it up another gear and in the final 20 meters I finally overtook him! My jump was better than his so the victory was mine!
Sporza: What does today mean for you?
Stijn Van Gent: Well, hopefully it's the start of much more. But for now I'm just enjoying the moment. This gives me hope of winning the Ronde one day.
Sporza: Thanks. Good luck in Gent - Wevelgem Sunday.
Stijn Van Gent: Thanks!

Miguel98
Awesome win for Stijn. Banana

Jakstar22
Great win. Cant wait for Gent Wevelgem

sutty68
Stijn certainly put his mistake at Milan San Remo right at the back of his mind to be able to record a Great victory here Smile

rogvi97
Great job, he's getting stronger! I hope you'll win in Vlaandern or P-R! That's one hell of a tactic you made there!

Miguel98 - Thanks a lot for the banana Wink

Jakstar22 - Thanks! Will probably race it tonight.

sutty68 - He kept concentrated and took home the win! His first of hopefully many classics!

rogvi97 - Vlaanderen or P-R would be amazing. But as far as he's concerned, his early season is already a major, major success. Though Vlaanderen in the National Jersey would be great Grin

Just wanted to ask you all a question. The recent developments, with Willy going to try triathlon and Stijn taking the reins here, I just wanted to know what everyone thinks about that? Thanks for the feedback in advance Wink

I dont think you should write reports from Willy anymore, this is just enough Smile

Well done Stijn on getting an amazing victory Grin
I think it's good now (ie in the classics season) but Stijn as the sprinter that he is will surely want to do a GT a year but the GT mountain stages wouldn't be quite so good without Willy
I dont really know tbh... Do whatever you think's best for the story and whatever keeps you motivated though Smile
