Driedaagse van West Vlaanderen

Stage 3
Nieuwpoort - Ichtegem
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/dvv_3.jpg
Another cobbled stage that will provide a last opportunity for the cobblers to gain back time on Veelers, who's looking unstoppable at the moment. Unfortunately for the others, this stage is easier than yesterday's and a massive effort will be needed to create any gaps at all. Veelers has enough margin to defend his lead as long as he finishes alongside the other favourites, so we'll try to just control the peloton in the closing kilometers.

Fröhlinger in the breakaway for us today, but without helping his companions. He was also there to try to pick up the two KoM sprints. The group didn't cooperate well and was caught quite early though.

Just after the last cobbled section, De Backer lifted the pace. He didn't attack, just moved to the front using the dot. A gap appeared quickly so we decided to let him go for the stage win.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/dvv_3_4.jpg
Nobody seemed to care about De Backer at first, but after a while Scheirlinckx couldn't resist to try an attack. Veelers immediately covered.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/dvv_3_5.jpg
Traksel also joined them, but they were unable to close the gap up to De Backer. Back-to-back stage win for us?

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/dvv_3_6.jpg
Yes! De Backer held off all chasers with ease to claim a great victory and also pick up twenty important bonus seconds.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/dvv_3_7.jpg
Half a minute later, we once again saw a Landbouwkrediet duo taking the other podium spots. This time it was Scheirlinckx who stole important bonus seconds from his team leader De Waele. Veelers finished in 5th and claimed the overall win, 17 seconds ahead of new second place, De Backer.

This was the last stage. Wink

Skil is dominating the continental season so far, maybe they'll get invited to important PT race thanks to what they've been doing. Smile

Thank you! We're indeed doing really well at the moment.

And Freitas, I have a feeling that we're participating in a PT race shortly. Wink

I haven't got any clear tactic of how we should act here. Docker, Hupond, Geschke and Huguet are all capable of winning one of the harder stages, while Van Hummel will be going for stage wins on the flatter ones.
Bonnin, Geniez and Sprick are in quite bad form and are participating here just because they are French. Those three will act as domestiques, and maybe aim for the KoM jersey too, who knows?

Favourites:
***** Evans
**** Schleck, Kreuziger
*** Anton, Gilbert, Taaramae
** De Gendt, Voeckler, Froome, Martin
* Van Garderen, Sánchez, Hesjedal, Porte, Zubeldia

Evans is of course the favourite for the overall win. Mostly because of the timetrial where Schleck is expected to lose time on the Aussie.
Kreuziger, Anton and Taaramae will be the main challengers to Evans and Schleck.
Gilbert will also be very dangerous, but with a timetrial and a stage rated as mountainous he might lose too much to his rivals. But then again, he is Gilbert.

Stage 1
Houdan - Houdan
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/pn_1.jpg
An easy stage starting and finishing in the city of Houdan. It's mostly very flat, but there is a few shorter hills and also the finish is slightly uphill. Not very much though, and it's unlikely that it will have any impact on the result.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/pn_1_1.jpg
We were of course in the first move of the day. Saur's Delaplace initiated the attack, bringing Huguet and Aramendia with him.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/pn_1_2.jpg
Huguet easily dropped the other two up the day's only categorized climb to collect maximum points on top of it, securing him the KoM jersey on tomorrow's stage.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/pn_1_3.jpg
Some teams saw Huguet as a threat to their captains and therefore didn't allow him to stay in front of the peloton and brought him back after the climb.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/pn_1_4.jpg
We answered by sending away Bonnin seconds later. It was more acceptable from the other teams and the Frenchman started to build up an advantage.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/pn_1_5.jpg
Robbie Hunter joined him a couple of kilometers later forming a strong leading duo.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/pn_1_6.jpg
The two leaders cooperated really well and stabilized a quite large advantage, causing a lot of anxiety in the pack. Martin Maaskant and Nick Nuyens saw this as a great opportunity to attack and went for it.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/pn_1_7.jpg
They joined the two men up front with less than ten km's to the line. The peloton wasn't far behind though, but they had big problems to close the remaining 30 seconds.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/pn_1_8.jpg
The four leaders still lead by half a minute as we reached the last two kilometers. Nuyens found himself in the bad position leading the other three out. Bonnin was in the perfect position, on Hunter's wheel.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/pn_1_9.jpg
Hunter blasted into the lead as we entered the final kilometer, but Maaskant was also coming really fast on his left. Bonnin was stiill in a good position, but he was struggling to come up alongside Hunter.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/pn_1_10.jpg
But with 500 meters to go, the peloton were coming back at them with Van Hummel at the front! Docker had given him a perfect leadout and he was now coming with amazing speed.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/pn_1_11.jpg
And Van Hummel managed to come past the escapees to win the stage ahead of a very fast Viviani and a bit surprisingly, Nicolas Roche.

Wow, Kenny with a World Tour stage win! But where are the great sprinters? Only Viviani and Galimzyanov present...
Nevertheless, keep up these results!

Skil's still on the run! What a start into this season, well done! And btw, great quality-screens Smile

Great win...very strong stage from SKIL...well done.

Very nice victory for Hummel in Paris-Nice! Skil' is rolling the last week! Grin

@all: Thanks a lot! It was certainly a great win for us!
@dienblad: I was wondering the same. HTC has sent Cavendish, Goss, Renshaw and Degenkolb here, but none of them decided to participate in the sprint. Quite weird.

Stage 2: Montfort l'Amaury - Amilly: 196.9km
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/pn_2.jpg
Another easy stage where we are expecting another mass sprint. However, the breakaway came close yesterday since none of the sprint teams wanted to take the responsibility to close them down. Maybe a break will make it today?

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/pn_2_1.jpg
A ten man group established after a lot of unsuccessful attacks in the early kilometers of the stage. No notable names in it.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/pn_2_2.jpg
The breakaway didn't stand a chance though, as HTC and Liquigas were at the front all day keeping them at a reasonable distance. Cavendish feeling better today?

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/pn_2_3.jpg
Liquigas managed to set up the best leadout train today and they were at the front with less than three kilometers to go. Docker and Van Hummel were a little bit behind, but definitely not out of it yet.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/pn_2_4.jpg
Docker quickly took the lead as he launched the final leadout for Van Hummel. HTC were challenging us with Cavendish (!) leading out Goss. That's surprising.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/pn_2_5.jpg
Goss didn't disappoint Cavendish and thanked him for his work by winning the stage. Van Hummel wasn't able to challenge and had to settle for second, while Viviani finished third after launching way too late.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/pn_2_6.jpg
The pack splitted in the end, with a big group losing 2'30. Andy Schleck and Igor Anton were badly placed at the time and were punished for it. They are now a long way behind in the GC and will have to fight very hard if they want to challenge.

Stage 3: Cosne-Cours - Nuits-St-Georges
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/pn_3.jpg
Should be a bit more interesting than the earlier two stages. The climb up to Côte de Beacoup tops with just 22 km's to go, with most of it being downhill. That should give us offensive riding over it and a strong attack can definitely secure the stage win.

Eight riders in the breakaway today. Some strong names in the shape of Leukemans, Voigt and Rast.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/pn_3_2.jpg
Just like yesterday, HTC and Liquigas placed some riders at the front to keep the escapees in reach. It's understandable since both Goss and Viviani has been looking good so far.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/pn_3_3.jpg
Immediately as we started the climb up to Côte de Beaucoup, Huguet was off in pursuit of the breakaway to save his polkadot jersey.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/pn_3_4.jpg
Huguet's try was unsuccessful, so Hupond tried to jump instead. This time looking for the stage win rather than the KoM points.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/pn_3_5.jpg
In the descent Hupond was joined by Hesjedal and Lastras, forming a really strong trio. They couldn't gain any big gap though.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/pn_3_6.jpg
Group Hupond managed to catch most of the early breakaway, but HTC brought it all back together. Only one man were still in front - Galland.

We took the responsibility to close the Frenchman down, and also managed to set up a small train for Van Hummel, who had recovered quite well after the climb.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/pn_3_8.jpg
Docker stretched the field out as he launched the final leadout for Van Hummel. Goss, Viviani, Galimzyanov and Gilbert followed behind our duo.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/pn_3_9.jpg
Van Hummel made his burst for the line inside the final kilometer, but was immediately challenged by Goss. Déjà-vu yesterday, with Van Hummel and Goss battling it out for the stage win!

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/pn_3_10.jpg
And just like yesterday, Goss was too strong for Van Hummel and took his second consecutive stage win here in France. VH faded a bit in the end and just missed the podium. Unfortunately Goss takes over the race lead thanks to his bonus seconds.

Results didn't export for some reason and therefore only a short one.
