I did mean stupid that Cav signed such a deal, knowing their aim was ultimately GC.
I do think Cav thought he'd be given more support then he did. On paper they provided him with a fine squad. Rodgers, Eisel, EBH is probably as good as anything he got at HTC. Really, I think part of the problem was how early Sky took the jersey. As soon as they realized they would need to be working for two straight weeks to keep it, they weren't willing to use Rodgers or EBH (especially without Siutsov), nor were they willing to put in the heavy lifting on the flat stages to really set him up (they were willing to chase, but not keep the pace high after the catch through to the finish).
I don't think it was necessarily that stupid. On paper it was a perfect match, in reality not so much, but I can understand the logic behind the signing. I do agree though it is probably in his best interests, in his attempt to cement himself as the GOAT of sprinting, to go somewhere else where he'll be guaranteed focus, no matter what.
It's the 3 year contract that seems rather presumptive to me.
First rule of sports contracts. Get as many years as you can. If Sky offered three years, only the dumbest athlete with the dumbest agent would say no.
Even one of the most sought-after cyclists in the world when he's signing with a team whose express aim is GC and if he wants to leave he has to pay his way out of it. That sounds pretty dumb to me. |

He's one of the most sought after riders in the sport because he's healthy and has a recent track record of results. It's sport, you can't guarantee that stuff for a million different reasons.
It's why being an NFL player is so much worse than being an NBA or MLB player in the US. The years and total dollar value of contracts are usually similar, but because people get injured so easily in the NFL, the money isn't usually guaranteed, or if it is, it's usually only a portion of it. In the MLB or NBA, it's extremely rare for a player to get a contract that isn't guaranteed. When you sign it, you know you'll be getting most of if not all of the face value. Without a real collective bargaining agreement, there may not be any explicit guarantees to Cavendish's contract, but even still, if he were to crash in a way that ended his career, he most likely would be able to gain some of it through a lawsuit. The more years he has guaranteed, the more money he'd be likely to recoup in that event. Also, if he were to fall off the map in the next few years (which happens a fair amount with sprinters, think how good Jimmy Casper and Baden Cooke were in around 2005), he'd still have that contract. If he'd signed for only a year, he'd have to go back on the open market and make significantly less.
The deal makes perfect sense to me. He does have to live with the consequences though. |

Well it doesn't make sense now. And I can hardly imagine Cav thinking he was gonna fall off the map. |

Amorison has been having a very strong season at Landbouwkrediet and so he extends for another season. This is his 8th season with the squad.

Why? It seems Contador is laying down the line that he wants an 8-man team backing him for the GC, and Bennati certainly doesn't fit into that. He'd probably get a ride in the Tour, but...why risk it? |

I doubt Bennati is a rider who is looking forward to the Tour success. He would have no chance for single podium even with team dedicated to him imo. And there are still other GTs...

5 riders I expected to leave Sky at the end of the season - did so. LPN was bit of surprise, but a good move for him.
Now, there 2 Sky riders with no contracts signed yet. Micheal Rogers should sign 1/2 year extension if everything goes right. Alex Dowsett is the one I 50/50 on. He might leave, but might sign. Depends how he finishes his year off.
And that laves Cavendish, who will go. Will be interesting though if Sky mange to keep Eisel at Sky, or whether he will leave with Cav too.

Eisel renewed his contract, so probably he won't leave. |

Who will replace them, according to you?

I think there's only one that need to be replaced and that's Flecha. They need a cobbles specialist. |

Dowsett is the British TT champion. I think this will be important enough for Sky to extend, no?
Rogers might have had an offer from GreenEDGE? Though it's very likely he'll extend too.
Eisel won't leave his baby Cav alone, so he'll go wherever Cav goes. |

They have Stannard and Thomas. And they're focusing more on GT's from now on. |

GreenEdge have stated earlier on that they have 30 riders, and Rogers is not among them.
EDIT: 28 stays, Matthew Wilson retires and is replaced by Michael Matthews. Julian Dean is not sure whether he retires or rides another year.

Tough to say as Sky have been very quite in their transfer talk.
There's some stories of internal strifes in the team such as Wiggins apparently despite public statements, has not privately thanked any of the riders or staff involved at tour. That stories reportedly led to Vanmarcke and Breschel turning Sky offers down. Rumours of Vuelta squad unhappy that Brailsford has not attended the race. accusation of favouritsm to Wiggins and Cavendish.
So all that influences the situation a lot. Dombrowski and Jungels are good bets to come, at least 1 of them will I think.
Sky will also sign a classic rider or two, to replace Hunt/Flecha. It's a definite, but no idea who that might be. Lars Bak is a decent shout. Tiernan-Locke is another obvious rumour. Brailsford said he wants to win monument and focus on better classics result, so there will be signings directed in that area.

Yeah, I know. But that depends if they're gonna hire more riders instead of Dowsett. I personally don't wan't to see him at Sky, maybe a hire for a lower british team. |

Now we know why they failed. Brailsford didn't bless the team with his awesome powers. |
