Clásica San Sebastián 2019 (1.UWT) PaÃs Vasco, 214.6 kms
Le Tour's annual follow-up classic started with this four-man break of the day. Powered by Sjors Roosen, Alberic Crapa, Luka Pibernik, André Looij. At the start of the first Jaizkibel ascent, their lead was around 5 minutes. The pace remained low afterwards. On their second crossing, Guerreiro rode away from the pack. He got caught, but at least a race was on now. On the second Arkale climb, Ruben tried again. As the pack was closing in on the break he got reeled in again. Looij and Roosen were struggling. Pibernik and Crapa would barely make it to the foot of Bordako Tontorra. Diego, who came second in the latest two editions, came to the fore, yet he didn't react when world champion and 2013 winner Gallopin attacked. Kelderman and Sagan bridged, the others were riding for fourth. The first chasers included Ruben, Diego & Alaphilippe, winner of the last 2 years. As was to be expected, Peter Sagan easily handled the sprint and put his name on the winner's list for the 1st time; teammate Gallopin missed out on his 2nd win and Zorreguieta in the Basque Country, so did Kelderman. Diego and Ruben's group finally got overhauled by the 3rd group, which made them both conclude today's race outside the top 10, disappointing. Not a shame indeed at the back of three amazing weeks. Back-to-back second places don't look that bad now.
He just had to make up for the classics he missed due to injury.

Tour de Pologne (2.UWT) Stage 1/7, 176.3 kms
Daniele Dall'Oste was stronger than Jakub Kaczmarek on the first of four summits. Afterwards Jonathan Klever bridged to make the break a trio. Klever took the upper hand on the second Karpacz Orlinek ascent (8 km, avg. 4.3%). Halfway over the climb, the advantage increased to about 6'. Jonathan gathered enough points at the 2 last sprints to move into pink tomorrow. On the last summit the three had 1'40" left; 21km to the line. Jonathan also was the strongest in the group. He left the others behind, 10 kilometers from the finish in Jelenia Góra. Jona's lead is one minute. Our train came too the fore when Klever was about to be caught. Angel Cerezo tried to sneak away all alone, Arman Kamyshev followed swiftly. His brilliant anticipation would ultimately give him the edge over Demare as the Frenchman's effort wasn't sufficient to win today's opening stage. A slightly reduced one. The climbs had of course taken less out of the better climbers.

With no sprinter aboard, I'm certainly not complaining. Yet not all of them have the abilities to make it last in this kind of race. Let's enjoy while it lasts.

Tour de Pologne (2.UWT) Stage 2/7, 239.7 kms
The day started off with Luca Chirico, Brendan Canty, Nello De Battisti in the break of the day. Their lead at the last intermediate sprint was 2'59". Canty was the stronger on the only categorised climb in Chrzaszczyce yet Chirico stayed close, as De Battisti got caught up with shortly afterwards. Chirico went above and beyond, but his journey ended with under 15 km left. From then on, sprint trains started rolling towards Opole, capital city of the voivodeship of the same name. Rain could make for a tricky finale. With no sprinter aboard, Cerezo tried to keep I.Izagirre near the front. His strong effort kept the team leader near Bennett, Bonifazio & Demare. Just like yesterday, the latter had the fastest sprint. Only this time it was also enough to result in a win. Demare's also the new leader of the race. Vuelta a Burgos (2.HC) Stage 1/5, 135.2 kms
It was not until after the last sprint that a duo escaped. Beñat Intxausti responded to Burgos - BH's Hipólito ElÃas EtxeberrÃa's attack, 55 kms left. Beñat let go when the bunch sat very close already. Before the last cat.3 climb, both were reeled in. Only 15 kilometers until the uphill finish now. Nobody could go quicker than the pace imposed by Direct Énergie on the first ascent. That way, a vast bunch arrived at the foot of the final bump. Ramunas Navardauskas sprinted from foot to top to complete the perfect team effort. Zardini and Guerreiro had a great position at the foot, yet they could not overtake too many riders on the narrow Burgos city road. Tour de Pologne (2.UWT) Stage 3/7, 201.5 kms
Jonathan Klever believed the attack to be the best possible way to hold on to the lead of the KoM classification. He countered Andrea Tomassini's attack, Laurent Pichon joined the two of them later on. The first ascent of the cat.1 Kubalonka saw Klever come in first, keeping up a steady pace. That very strategy would pay off again on the second Kubalonka ascent. From then on, the three's lead would start to decrease, slowly but surely. Jonathan had a little left over the last hill. Yet he was picked up by the peloton as well, 12 kilometers from the line. In the pouring rain, our men disappeared from the fore due to a blistering pace, approaching Cieszyn. Mike Teunissen launched very early, narrowly avoiding getting Zabel'd by Sam Bennett. While the Dutchman landed his third victory of this season, Ion Izagirre finished inside the bunch, alongside Ednaldo Luiz Cortes.
