I much prefer flying to driving. I know that the Pilot has been through some of the most rigourous training, racking up hundreds of hours before being allowed to fly actualy passengers. They are also very closely monitered for drink and drug use and are heavily limited in the amount of hours they can work so as to avoid fatigue. Pilots also undergo regular re-testing and updating of skills. As much time as they spend in the air they will spend in simulators practicing.

Flying is hugely safe for the most part. It's easy to identify the dangerous planes, airlines and places to fly and avoid them.
The bit about the work hours have ben under pressure from some of the busget arirlines though, where there have been several stories about pilots being forced to fly way to many hours.
All in all it is much safer to fly than drive though, no doubt about it.

Well 1.3 million people die by driving annually while in it's around 400 every year via plane. Of course there are alot more people driving everyday than flying but statisticaly flying is safer
Of course rest in peace to all of those who died, it was a horrible accident |

I've only been in a plane on one round trip and I've never driven a car so... yeah.

Those kind of accidents are always awful. Unfortunately you cannot avoid them to 100% even though it luckily becomes more and more safe.
I was flying a lot of times so far. Around 40 times. But still always feeling a bit afraid of it despite knowing it's very safe.
Biggest issue for most is probably the fear of the feeling as soon as you realize it. |

I think, the reason, why much more people die while driving a car is simple. Pilots are trained to act properly, when something goes wrong, while most people on the road act wrong because they think they can drive while they cant. Also because planes are mostly piloted in the sky, there is no aggressive overtaking, or speeding on icey roads. Most crashes happen, because something on the plane doesnt work as it should. But even then, pilots can often bring the plane on the ground safely, while a car driver often responds wrongly when a flat tyre occurs...

It's the lack of control most people dislike most about flying. It's just part of human nature to want to be in control of yourself. There are other things like vertigo or claustrophobia but they are broader fears.

This, probably.
I'm also claustrophobic so yeah, another reason I won't fly soon, I guess...
Also, you make a good point on the pilot vs driver part (a few posts ago), but the crash today for example, was probably caused by the plane itself. And it was checked only yesterday(!) and approved. |

It is usually mechanical failure that causes plane crashes (as opposed to human failure for car crashes, another reason flying is better ). There was an EASA on the plane type not too long ago so, if it was the same problem, then that's concerning. Sometimes it's just sh*t luck which you can't avoid.... and sometimes it's a Russian missile, but that's for a different thread

Seeing how much time the airplane took to crash, I'm thinking a sudden lost of pressure may have been the cause of the incident. |

I tend to agree with this.
I am definitely biased tho because I love driving and am not a fan of flying.
Still facts are facts and flying is safer from a numbers standpoint.

Tbh I prefer driving, because it means you can be assured that if it fails you will not drop 30,000 feet

also when there is a human error in a plane crash, the pilots need to take additional courses to prevent from happening ever again. (watched air crash investigation last week on FedEx Express Flight 80) suggest you don't watch that if you're going to fly any time soon

On another matter, would anyone be interested in daily charts thread for music, I would have a panel of 5, including me, an then the rest of daily deciding on a top 10 for the fortnight, then it would change every fortnight. Anyone interested?

After today I am not terrified of flying again, I have flew 3 times now, even the most experienced pilots can still make the most deadly mistake, it only takes a split second
