Apparently Cavendish has been told by Team SKY that if he wants to ride for another team next season he has to buy himself out of his contract
Its not quite that simple
To leave before the end of his contract a release fee has to be paid to sky. Its a form of compensation.
Usually its paid by the team signing the rider.
But with Mark its £1m, and no team will pay/can afford to pay that, so to leave its likely that he will have to pay it.
This is common practice, its just that the size and value of Cav's contract that has lead to such a large fee.

Really no reason to blame Sky for wanting compensation for letting the World Champion go. Didn't see anyone complaining when Leopard paid Saxo Bank to let Cancellara go. |

Cavendish signed a legally binding contract. Sky are fully within their rights. End of story.

I guess the only reason anyone is seeing it as an issue is that in many ways it's in Sky's interest to let Cav go.
It'll save them a boatload of cash, and at this point Wiggo is a bigger star (for sponsorship purposes) then him (had Cav won gold, that wouldn't be the case, but it is), and the team's season next year will be based entirely on whether they defend their title with either Froome or Wiggo. Having Cav is a bonus, but it is an expensive bonus (Sky has very deep pockets, but they aren't limitless, just as Real Madrid's or the New York Yankees aren't either), and is a distraction.
If this was footy, Cav would seel for 60 cents on the dollar (quite like Robin Van Persie), but it isn't. |

I did mean stupid that Cav signed such a deal, knowing their aim was ultimately GC. |

I do think Cav thought he'd be given more support then he did. On paper they provided him with a fine squad. Rodgers, Eisel, EBH is probably as good as anything he got at HTC. Really, I think part of the problem was how early Sky took the jersey. As soon as they realized they would need to be working for two straight weeks to keep it, they weren't willing to use Rodgers or EBH (especially without Siutsov), nor were they willing to put in the heavy lifting on the flat stages to really set him up (they were willing to chase, but not keep the pace high after the catch through to the finish).
I don't think it was necessarily that stupid. On paper it was a perfect match, in reality not so much, but I can understand the logic behind the signing. I do agree though it is probably in his best interests, in his attempt to cement himself as the GOAT of sprinting, to go somewhere else where he'll be guaranteed focus, no matter what. |

It's the 3 year contract that seems rather presumptive to me. |

"Mark Cavendish is unhappy with the status you have assigned him. He hopes this will not happen again"
Anyway, some transfer news. McGee all but confirms Bennati going to Saxo Bank, by responding to whether Bennati's world tour points won today are a good thing for saxo: "It feels weird to celebrate a win by another team"
RAI says Cannondale (sponsor of Roberto Amadio's current Liquigas team) demanded 5 americans, a japanese and a chinese rider on the squad next year
Also according to RAI, Contador asked Riis for Bruseghin and Scarponi. Originally he wanted Tiralongo, but Tiralongo has another year on his contract.
If that last part is true, how many mountain domestiques does Contador need? 11?

After all his 'mountain domestiques' managed to get dropped, oh, I don't know, on the first Cat. 2 or worse climb in the 2011 Tour, I can kind of understand it.
Plus I wouldn't consider Bruseghin a mountain domestique anymore, we haven't seen those legs from him in a couple years. I think Contador is worried about a possible TTT next year. He can't lose a couple minutes to Sky that way.
As for Cannondale, it'll be interesting to see who else they pick up to add to King for next year. Joe D could definitely be a possibility, depending on how much dough the rich teams throw at him. Otherwise Tom Peterson, Peter Stetina, Brent Bookwalter, and Kiel Reijnen all catch the eye as quality pickups. Shouldn't have let Duggan go though. Meanwhile...Arashiro and some terrible Chinese rider? |

Ji might fit the bill for the Chinese rider. Currently at the Vuelta for Argos.

Exactly, his own stupid move to go to the team who declared focus to the british Tour winner. We know Cavendish is not the smartest person on earth, now he will play the role of someone who is being harmed...
Edit: And btw. Cav was still beaten many times this Tour by sprinter, who did not have also team focused solely around him, nor had more than one lead-out man

Why would they want to sign Tiralongo, that would be beyond stupid. Right now, they have a domestique whose wages are paid by another team, that's perfect.

First rule of sports contracts. Get as many years as you can. If Sky offered three years, only the dumbest athlete with the dumbest agent would say no. |

That rule only counts if you get awesome wage in it. And Cav gets some serious cash.
