Hard to believe there are only four teams left and we are one of them. I don't even think our coaches expected us to be here. When our starting QB Ryan Reese went down with an injury at the start of the season, I think everyone just assumed this was going to be a rebuilding year.
But, I kept us afloat. Stepping in as the starting QB and leading us to a 6-2 regular season and a spot in the state playoffs. However, I decided to leave school for three days to go to Europe to be with my family. It allowed Reese to take over the reins and be talk of the town once again.
Reese led us to a pair of playoff victories to get us here: the state semifinals.
And now I was watching him take the First Team reps at practice, yet again. I was now an afterthought. The backup. Waiting for something bad to happen.
As much as I wanted to be supportive, put yourself in my shoes. College were now starting to take back the scholarship offers that I received. Vanderbilt, North Carolina State and Appalachian State all withdrew their offers. I was down to three universities with no certainty that they would stick around for much longer.
Maybe my dad was right, maybe I should have played soccer.
As that thought crossed my brain, I looked up to see Reese in a shouting match with our head coach. I ran over to try and calm things down but, before I could get there, Reese threw a punch.
"You're done," coach Nelson said. "You're off the team."
You should have seen the looks on everybody's faces.
"Go," Nelson repeated over and over again at Reese. "You're done. Leaving your equipment in the locker room."
Reese just stood there. Frozen. Unable to find any words. The team watched on in disbelief. Nelson pointed Reese off the field.
"Go," he said, one last time. "Marcus grab your helmet. Offense with me."
As Nelson walked away, Reese took off and threw his helmet, gloves, shoulder pads and practice jersey on the field before leaving the scene. I was shocked.
What just happened? Rumors later circulated that Reese was getting berated by Nelson the whole practice to try harder. Which I somewhat believe, since Nelson isn't the most friendly coach in the world. But, Reese is also an instigator.
Both are extremely competitive and I guess in the heat of the moment Reese's temper got the best of him. It cost him the rest of the season.
And, somehow, I was the starting quarterback again.

First Quarter
After both opening possessions ended with punts, Asheville is putting together a sustainable drive here at the end of the first quarter. QB Diamond Jr. is hitting all his spots, connecting on a handful of short passes. On 3-and-goal from the Gastonia 5yd line, MDJ calls his own number. It's a QB run up the middle.
He dives across the end line, touchdown! A joyous moment for the senior, putting his team up 7-0 on the road in the state semifinals.
After everything this team has been through this week, they needed that.
Second Quarter
The Cougars are on the move again!
After putting Gastonia's defense to sleep with countless short passes, QB Diamond Jr. is finally looking deep. He has a man. Caught! 38yd pass to WR Nguyen. And now he is going deep a second time...
Caught again! 33yd to WR Sarria, who is stopped a yard short from a touchdown. The Cougars rush up to the line of scrimmage and MDJ plows his way in for his second rushing touchdown. 14-0 Asheville halfway through the second quarter.
QB Diamond Jr. is amped up. He tries one more deep ball near the end of the half but its intercepted in the end zone by Gastonia SS Taylor.
The Cougars' defense, as they have done all postseason, stand firm and keep Gastonia scoreless going into halftime.
Third Quarter
Those looking for an offensive showdown will be disappointed. Both defenses hold serve and the score remains the same, 14-0, going to the fourth quarter. Can the Cougars hold on and become the third No. 14-seeded team in history to make the Class 2A State championship game?
Fourth Quarter
Asheville puts all its faith in its defense up two scores. Everything the Longhorns try, the Cougars have an answer, especially on third down. Gastonia ends up going 0-for-13 on third down — a recipe for disaster.
On the final play of the game, Asheville put the final nail in Gastonia's coffin with a sack. Game Over! The Cougars advance to the title game!

After all the interviews and hoopla, it felt nice to step away from it all and just be one of the guys again. My Canvey Island United teammates didn't treat me like royalty, the exact opposite really. They took me down a peg and off my pedestal.
In fact, while I was away wining the Vuelta a Espana, they were here grinding away in our first season at the bottom of the newly constructed Great Britain football pyramid. I missed seven games in total: five league games and two cup matches. Here is how they fared in my absence:

A very solid run of form with a six-game unbeaten streak, but I rejoin them after a disappointing cup loss to Lancaster — a team well below us in our league table. The club board was expecting us to at least make the third round, so not great.
But at least striker Oscar Thorn managed to score a winner right before halftime against South Shields to get us into the third round of the United British Cup.
I rejoin the squad with four more matches left to play (all on the road) in a very jam-packed September, as the team is set to play nine games in a 30-day span.

Summary: It wasn't pretty, but it was effective. Twelve yellow cards are show and a red for Grays in the 81st minute. Winger Kwado Bugeyi-Kyei grabs a goal, filling in quite well for the injured Don White. Oscar Thorn also converted from the penalty spot after the red card and Jermaine Moss headed home a free kick whipped in by Marcus Diamond in his return to the club.
Rating: 8.3 - Completely outclassed our opposition here and everything was clicking. Delivered my second assist of the league season and 54th of my career at the club level.

Rating: 7.4 - Subbed off in the 58th minute with us holding a 1-0 lead. Hard to watch the guys let it slip away in the final minutes.

Summary: Oscar Thorn scores two minutes in for Canvey Island United for his team-leading ninth goal of the season (seventh in the league). St. Neots answered 38 seconds later. But, Canvey Island United turn to one of its newest signings, Renan from the Lithuania.
The attacking midfielder was brought in on a free transfer at the beginning of September to help fill the void of not having Marcus Diamond around for a while. Now he is trying to keep his spot in the team, and certainly made a case today by scoring what turned out to be the league's Goal of the Week on a one-time strike from outside the 18-yard box.
Yet, all that excitement was ripped away when St. Neots scored two unanswered goals in the second half to win 3-2. In the pouring rain, Gareth Reynolds slipped behind CIU's backline to score the game-winning goal in the 93rd minute.
Rating: 7.4 - Painful. Not much more to say.

- Stats work on a decimal system starting at 1.0.
- Stats are bumped up in FM when they hit that number, ex. 2.9 = 2 in-game, and 13.4 = 13 stat in-game.

Regression System
Every month during the football season, there is a 25% chance of a stat reduction for each attribute. That percentage can decrease based on the following achievements:

Mental Attributes: -2% for each win Diamond plays in that month.
Physical Attributes: -5% for each 8.0+ rating Diamond has that month.
Unlocked attributes also face a 25% chance of being locked each month.
Each member also has the option to pick one single attribute across any three of the categories (technical, mental or physical) to decrease that single attributes chance of reduction by 5%. This includes locked and unlocked stats. Include the attribute with your Training Ground points.
Regression: Both Tackling and Jumping Reach have lost an attribute, but no new stats have been locked and Off The Ball gained an attribute.
After three glorious weeks in Spain, I was more than eager to return for the World Championships a week later as the newly crowned Vuelta a Espana champion!
However, due to a scheduling conflict, I decided to skip the World Individual Time Trial race to play for Canvey Island United instead. I ended up missing what turned out to be a historic event.
Here we are. Four days later, on September 30, 2026, when the road race should have been raced. And I'm lacing up my football boots to play with Canvey Island United again tonight. My plane ticket to Spain had been thrown away — just like my ambitions to capture my first rainbow jersey.
And yet, I was content. This was the right decision.
I walked out of the locker room and onto the pitch for pre-game warmups. An early arriving crowd of roughly 100 people littered the stands. Nothing like the thousands that would have crowded the finish line in Barcelona.
Grace was standing over by the corner flag holding baby Marcus Jr. A smile on her face. It was the first away game she had ever taken MDJ to. Hopefully a fun work trip to Badgers Hill, Frome, for the whole family to get away from all the media.
It's been overwhelming. The latest headline has taken the sports world by storm.
Women Cyclists' Boycott Compels UCI to
Cancel World Road Race Championship

Lorena Wiebes, a prominent advocate for women's cycling and a leading figure in the boycott, expressed her disappointment, stating, "The cancellation of the World Road Race Championship reflects the magnitude of the inequalities we face as women cyclists. We are determined to create an environment where fair competition and equal recognition are the norm, and this boycott was a necessary step in that direction."
The UCI, the governing body responsible for maintaining the integrity of the sport, found itself confronted with mounting pressure as the boycott gained momentum. While they initially aimed to proceed with the championship, the UCI ultimately recognized the validity of the athletes' demands and the urgent need for change.

The sun begins its descent, casting a golden glow over the towering walls of Kenan Memorial Stadium. This is it — the 2043 North Carolina High School Football 2A championship game. I stand at the center of it all, Marcus Diamond Jr., the senior quarterback of Asheville High School.
As I look out at the sea of spectators, I can feel the weight of the moment pressing down on me. Thousands of eyes watching our every move.
It's not just about me; it's about the brotherhood we've built, the coaches who have pushed us beyond our limits and the fans who have cheered us on with unwavering support. We've fought together, bled together, and now, we stand together in the tunnel on the brink of greatness.
But our opponents, East Erwin, won't make it easy for us. They deserve to be here just as much as we do. However, I refuse to back down. Every moment of my young football career has led to this. The countless hours of practice, the sacrifices, the sweat and tears.
The turf beneath my feet feels familiar. The scent of fresh grass fills my nostrils, heightening my senses. I take a moment to appreciate the journey that has brought me here, the challenges that have shaped me into the player I am today.
As I step onto the hallowed ground, the roar of the crowd envelops me, their energy fueling my determination. With every ounce of strength, every flick of my wrist, and every surge of adrenaline, I will leave everything on this field.

East Erwin's offense fails to find its rhythm, resulting in a disappointing 3-and-out on their opening possession.
Then, the moment arrives for Marcus Diamond Jr., the energetic quarterback of Asheville. But as the first quarter came to an end, a glimmer of hope emerges for the Asheville Cougars. MDJ, unfazed by his earlier mistake, connects on three consecutive passes, unlocking the key to East Erwin's defense. Their relentless effort drives them across midfield, tantalizingly close to turning the tide.
Second Quarter
MDJ made a bold statement on a critical 3rd-and-11. He unleashed a precise 43-yard touchdown pass to WR Thien Nguyen, who outpaced his one-on-one coverage with a blazing streak route up the sideline. Asheville surged ahead, claiming a 7-3 lead early in the quarter.
However, Diamond Jr.'s fortune took a turn when he threw his second interception on the subsequent drive, squandering Asheville's chance to extend their advantage.
East Erwin took the opportunity, mounting a determined offensive march. The drive concluded with a well-executed 10-yard touchdown pass from QB William Wheeler to WR Chris DeLoach, vaulting the Warriors back into the lead, 10-7, with 2:29 left before halftime.
Under mounting pressure, Diamond Jr. succumbed to another misstep, throwing his third interception of the game. Despite Asheville's resilient defense halting East Erwin's progress in the red zone, the Warriors settled for a field goal attempt. Lady Luck smiled on Asheville as the kick collided with the right upright, denying East Erwin the chance to extend their lead. The score remained locked at 10-7, favoring the Warriors, as the teams retreated to the locker room for halftime.
The Locker Room
Sitting in silence, the Asheville players waited for their head coach Greg Nelson to enter the room. Nelson swung the door open and looked around the room.
"Alright, listen up, team! We've had a first half filled with ups and downs, but let me tell you something — we're not out of this game, not by a long shot. We came here to fight, to battle for that championship title, and we're not going to let a rough start define us.
Now, Marcus, my man, I want you to pay close attention. I know you had a tough first half, and I could see the frustration in your eyes. But guess what? You are one of the best quarterbacks I've ever had the privilege to coach. Your talent, your leadership — it's unparalleled.

Third Quarter
Asheville struggled to gain momentum early on, resulting in a punt on their opening drive as MDJ faced relentless pressure, enduring two sacks.
In contrast, East Erwin capitalized on their offensive possession. With a series of impressive passing plays, they steadily advanced into the red zone. Their efforts culminated in a powerful three-yard touchdown run by running back Kevin Morgan, extending East Erwin's lead to 17-7.
Both teams then engaged in a number of fierce exchanges as the defensive units stood strong, refusing to yield ground. However, Diamond Jr. sparked a glimmer of hope for Asheville with a deep pass to Nguyen, propelling the team into East Erwin territory. TE Michael Weisbecker further fueled the drive with an exceptional 22-yard reception, breaking through two tackles to gain significant yardage.
As the third quarter drew to a close, Asheville found themselves on the doorstep of a pivotal scoring opportunity. With 1st-and-goal, the Cougars stood just feet away from narrowing the 17-7 deficit.
Fourth Quarter
Asheville stormed into the quarter with a burning desire to turn things around. Fullback Narayan Glick became the catalyst, bulldozing his way into the end zone with an emphatic 1-yard touchdown run. The scoreboard tightened, the lead now a mere three points with East Erwin holding on, 17-14.
The Warriors responded with a methodical drive, attempting to stifle Asheville's comeback hopes. However, the tide of fortune shifted when their QB Wheeler narrowly escaped an interception. On the ensuing play, the ball then slipped from Wheeler's grasp while being sacked, resulting in a fumble. Though East Erwin recovered, the setback disrupted their momentum, forcing them to punt.
With 3:06 remaining on the clock, Asheville received the ball at their own 20-yard line. Inch by inch, the Cougars clawed their way toward midfield, the crowd holding its breath with each hard-fought gain.
Yet, fate proved unyielding. On a pivotal 4th-and-5, MDJ searched for salvation, launching a pass towards WR Nguyen streaking across the middle. Unbeknownst to him, a lurking East Erwin defender pounced, intercepting the ball with a swift and decisive move.
The crushing blow marked Diamond Jr.'s fourth interception of the game, extinguishing Asheville's hopes of a comeback. As the final minutes ticked away, East Erwin seized control, expertly managing the clock to secure their victory.
The score stood at 17-14, favoring the resilient Warriors as they celebrated their hard-earned championship title.

Decision Time: A poor state championship game performance doesn't see any new scholarship offers come in. Three schools have offered MDJ a spot on their team next season: the East Carolina Pirates in Greenville, NC, the Old Dominion Monarchs in Norfolk, VA, and the Georgia Southern Eagles in Statesboro, GA. Summary: The party atmosphere at Park Lane was subdued for the last five minutes or so, but Canvey Island United escaped with 3-2 win in the United British Cup Third Round. Marcus Diamond popped up again with two goals in the first eight minutes and assisted the team's third goal to Cavan Bassett in the 27th minute. Evesham stormed back and was within a goal after Harley Crook scored in the 85th minute. Evesham smacked the crossbar in the 89th minute, but the scare was enough to knock off Canvey Island United.
Rating: 9.6 - Things are looking up. The team is finally starting to come together and play some nice looking football. While I am doing a lot of good things, by no means am I going to take all the credit.

Canvey Island United have found a way to make things work without Don White.
Rating: 9.5 - Two more goals and an assist. Great of form. Not much more to say really. Just have to keep it going and not getting caught up thinking too much.

Summary: Where to even start with this one? Margate delights their home crowd by scoring early, but that lights a fire under Canvey Island United to score three goals before halftime, including one by Manchester City academy reject Charlie McNeill making his debut and another by Don White returning from injury.
White then slipped through Marcus Diamond for his 10th goal of the month! That had Canvey Island United up 4-1 with less than half an hour to play. Yet, the spectators watched in glee as three more goals were scored between the 70th and 72nd minute. Two for Margate and another for McNeill to cap a sparking debut.
Despite McNeill's performance, the local media in attendance only really wanted to get his thoughts on Canvey Island United getting drawn against his former club, three-time reigning British Super League champions Man City, in the fourth round of the United British Cup. Well, if Man City should beat its third round opponent Dorking Wanderers in the coming days.
"Can't wait," McNeill said. "Bring it on."
Rating: 8.6 - Seven games, 10 goals, three assists and an average rating of 8.6. Can't do much better than that. But, all that matter is seven out of seven wins and we now sit a top of the league table! An outstanding month.

For those that might have forgotten, I'm headed to a new team for next season! After five seasons with SEG, I signed a three-year deal with Team HSE-Liquigas based out of Slovenia. They offered me by far the most money and an opportunity to chase whatever races I want to target.
Sadly, I'm leaving all my friends here and will be joining a new group where I don't anybody and can't speak their languages. Also, my wife Grace will no longer be grabbing my water bottles and food for me. She enters retirement to take care of our baby. Crazy how fast things can change.
One day, little baby MDJ is going to be walking and talking. Making his own decisions. Living his own life. Making mistakes and memories. Meanwhile, I'm just trying my best to live in the moment right now because time never stops.
Seconds turn to minutes to hours to days to weeks to months to years.
Cherish what we have because if you blink, then you might just miss it.
After months of contemplation and endless nights filled with uncertainty, the time had come for me to make a critical decision in my football journey. The weight of this choice weighed me down as I carefully evaluated each opportunity that lied before me, considering which path would best shape my future.
Over the past few months, offers from various colleges trickled in, each presenting its own unique possibilities. Among the institutions that reached out were Old Dominion, Georgia Southern and North Carolina State, the latter offering me a walk-on spot. While these notable programs are nothing to scoff at, the dream offers I had hoped for never materialize.
As the excitement of February's National Signing Day faded, a mix of emotions swirled within me — anger, frustration and an unwavering determination to prove my worth. Witnessing other players from around the region sign with more prestigious colleges is frustrating, to say the least. I held onto a glimmer of hope that better offers would come, postponing this decision until April.
The waiting game is over.
With every passing day, the reality becomes clearer — a decision must be made.

That's how I was raised. Failures don't define you. Perseverance does.
Now East Carolina awaits. While it may not be the flashiest choice, it is the one that feels right to me. I'm ready to don the Pirate purple.

Apologies for the radio silence lately – it's been a whirlwind of a season. Between the rigorous training sessions, nail-biting matches, and constant travel, finding time to keep you updated has been a challenge.
But you know what they say, time flies when you're doing what you love. And let me tell you, stepping onto the pitch week after week, giving my all for the team, has been nothing short of exhilarating. In my heart, I know I made the right decision coming back here and building Canvey Island United from the ground up.

David vs. Goliath (Part 1)

CANVEY ISLAND, England (Nov. 26, 2026) — Park Lane was packed to the brim today to watch Canvey Island United face one of the giants of the footballing world: Manchester City. The three-time defending British Super League Champions and two-time UEFA Champions League winners marched into Canvey Island looking to slaughter the Tier 10 competition in the fourth round of United British Cup. Instead, against all odds, Marcus Diamond and the Islanders kept a "C" squad Man City team from scoring.
The match ended 0-0 in front of 4,508 enthusiastic supporters. Manchester City outshot Canvey Island United 20-9 (8-4 shots on target) and had a better xG (1.87-0.66) but goalkeeper Fergal Hale-Brown made history with a wall of defenders in front of him. Canvey Island's reward for miraculously getting a draw? A replay two weeks later at Etiham Stadium.

MANCHESTER, England (Dec. 11, 2026) — Over 50,000 spectators came out to witness the little club of Canvey Island United trying to dethrone arguably the best team in the world. The sea of light blue was something the Islanders had never seen before. It's the largest crowd many of their players will ever play in front of during their careers. Nerves were high on both sides, as we approached halftime with the score still tied 0-0.
Then, right before stoppage time, Manchester City drew a penalty kick and 22-year-old Scottish striker Fraser Sharpe converted. Two minutes later, Canvey Island United winger Jocelyn Janneh drew a second yellow card and was sent off. That spelled the end for Canvey Island United as Manchester City scored three more times in the second half with the man-advantage for a 4-0 win. The loss snapped a 13-game unbeaten streak for Canvey Island United.

CANVEY ISLAND, England (Dec. 19, 2026) — Cycling offseason means Marcus Diamond is fully locked in on football. He arguably had his best matches in his career today, recording a first-half hat trick in a 3-3 draw against Buxton.
His goal scoring spree included a 25-yard volley screamer that is in the running for goal of the season, a freekick master piece from just outside the 18-yard box and a penalty kick blasted in with ease. Despite the offensive explosion, Buxton scored twice in the last 20 minutes to escape with a road draw.
Boxing Day Rivals
AFC Hornchurch prepares for a rivalry showdown.
CANVEY ISLAND, England (Dec. 26, 2026) — Two rivals going head-to-head on Boxing Day, nothing better. Marcus Diamond arguably had the biggest target on his back after playing with AFC Hornchurch back in 2020. He delivered with the opening goal in the 34th minute, but Hornchurch answered with two quick goals right after halftime. In the final minutes of the match, Jocelyn Janneh scored the equalizer off a David Bailey pass. The match finished 2-2.
Both teams now head into the January transfer window wondering if they have the right pieces in place to make a push for promotion or, even better, the league title.

CANVEY ISLAND, England (Apr. 17, 2027) — With four matches still left to play, Canvey Island United can celebrate being the English Prime Division 3B champions following a 6-2 blowout win over Margate. Charlie McNeill scored four times, his striker partner Oscar Thorn had a goal and three assists and Marcus Diamond notched his league-leading 38th goal this year across all competitions.
Canvey Island United outpaced Stafford and Morpeth for the league title.

Looking Ahead to 2027-28
The influx of money brought in from playing Manchester City and getting promoted this past season has allowed us to recruit some better players for next season. The word is starting to get around that this grassroots movement is on the rise and it's cool to interact with other players that want to be involved in our growth as we try to climb the Great Britain football pyramid.
Sadly, bringing in new players means some of the old favorites have to leave. This offseason has already seen the following former teammates depart: Charlie McNeill (26 goals), Patrick Salminen, Ian Fitzgerald (51 appearances), Renan (5 goals), Umar Offor and Fergal Hale-Brown. I expect more to follow. I'm doing my best to keep the locker room together so the turnover doesn't ruin team chemistry.
Some of the new guys to keep an eye on for next year, in my humble opinion: striker Dario Tomoski, midfielder Barrie Manning and goalkeeper Joe Whitworth.
Progress is being made. The first league title is just the first step. We have a long ways to go before my redemption arc is complete. Thanks for sticking with me!
And I can't thank my family enough for all the sacrifices being made so I can continue to compete in the two sports I love. Grace loves being a mother and I know wants to have more kids in the future but, at the same time, baby (I mean toddler) MDJ is just learning how to walk so life is about to get more complicated.
Seems like a brilliant season for Marcus (as should be expected) and exciting times ahead for Canvey Island United with a streamlined pyramid beckoning andsome money to re-invest - a Man City is a huge boon for such a small club but hopefully some more cup runs can bring in some teams for the top four leagues that will draw big crowds!

As I reflect on the 2027 cycling season, a whirlwind of emotions rush through my mind. It has been a year of exhilaration, heartbreak and personal growth. From the thrilling highs of victory to the crushing lows of disappointment, I have experienced the full spectrum.
The season began with eager anticipation as I joined Team HSE-Liquigas. However, the spring classics brought me face-to-face with the harsh reality of the sport. Disappointing finishes and painful crashes left me questioning my abilities and searching for answers. It was a time of deep frustration and self-doubt.
But amidst the darkness, a glimmer of hope emerged at the Tour de Romandie. It was a moment of pure elation, reminding me why I love this sport.
A grueling first season with Team HSE-Liquigas demanded more from me than I ever thought possible. It pushed me beyond my comfort zone, forcing me to confront my weaknesses and discover untapped reservoirs of strength. The setbacks and obstacles served as catalysts for personal growth, teaching me valuable lessons about perseverance, teamwork and the indomitable human spirit.
The road ahead is uncertain, and the challenges will be many, but I am ready to face them head-on. The road to greatness is never ending.

ROUBAIX, France (Apr. 8, 2027) — Marcus Diamond's inaugural season with Team HSE-Liquigas got off to a rather disappointing start in the spring classics, marked by struggles with integration and underwhelming performances. Despite high hopes, Diamond found it challenging to fit into the team dynamics, hampering his ability to shine on the competitive stage.
From a modest 7th place finish in Strade Bianche to a lackluster 10th place in Milano-San Remo, Diamond fell short of his aspirations for top-tier finishes. Romandie Breakthrough
Diamond wins Stages 2 & 4 on his way to winning the overall GC at Tour de Romandie.
LAUSANNE, Switzerland (Apr. 29, 2027) — After a forgettable Classics season, Marcus Diamond made an impressive comeback at the Tour de Romandie as he claimed victory in the prestigious six-stage tour. Diamond's triumph was built on two remarkable stage wins – a hilly Stage 2 and a challenging mountain top Stage 4 – solidifying his dominance in both types of terrain.
Not only did Diamond emerge as the overall winner of the General Classification (GC), but he also proved his prowess in the mountains by winning the KoM competition. His exceptional climbing abilities were on full display as he conquered the challenging ascents throughout the tour, further establishing his status as a formidable force in the peloton.
The battle for the GC title was fierce, with fellow Great Britain riders Tao Geoghegan Hart and Adam Yates providing tough competition. However, Diamond's consistency throughout the tour allowed him to secure a commanding lead. In the end, he claimed the GC victory, finishing 59 seconds ahead of Geoghegan Hart, with Yates trailing by 1 minute and 6 seconds in third place.

TRISTE, Italy (June 24, 2027) — The beast has awoken with the Tour de France right around the corner. Great Britain superstar Marcus Diamond is firing on all cylinders at the moment. He picked up his fifth stage victory in the month of June yesterday at the Adriatica Ionica Race. His great form is undeniable.
Two stage wins at the Criterium du Dauphine to finish 6th overall, a stage win and 4th place at the Tour of Slovenia and then two more stage wins here in Italy to take runner-up behind Jack Haig in the overall by 17 seconds.
No doubt he is starting to win his new teammates over. He will look to carry this new found momentum into the GB National Championships to try and defend his road race title, followed by his third-ever appearance at the Tour de France.

Disappointment sets in as Diamond sprints to 4th place at the GB RR championship.
COLCESTER, England (July 1, 2027) — Three days after nearly upsetting former World Champion Larry Gooden from winning a seven straight Great Britain ITT championship, Marcus Diamond looked to be in good shape to retain his GB RR title for a third consecutive season.
Diamond attacked on the flat with 6.3kms remaining and had a 24-second gap heading into the final 3 kilometers before a trio of sprinters worked together to pull the reigning champion back with 650 meters to go.
Christopher Lawless narrowly edged out Lucy van der Haar on the line to win his second national title. Diamond settled for fourth.
In the Great Britain ITT competition, Gooden got the best of everyone despite Diamond putting in a valiant effort on the hilly course to get within 11 seconds of taking down one of the best time trialers in the world.

Diamond wears Tour de France yellow for three days, but falls short of the podium.
PARIS, France (July 29, 2027) —After 21 grueling stages, a new Tour de France champion has been crowned. Great Britain is back on top as Tao Geoghegan Hart wins his second Tour de France. He swiped the yellow jersey away from fellow countryman Marcus Diamond on Stage 12, on the famous slopes of Alpe d'Huez.
While Diamond's teammate Primoz Roglic won Stage 12 from the breakaway to earn Team HSE-Liquigas only stage of the tour, Diamond was left to fend for himself for a majority of the three weeks. There was one major exception.
Diamond, with the help of premier cobbler Andreas Kron, effectively used the cobbled sectors on Stage 9 to create massive gaps between the GC favourites. When the dust settled, Diamond had over one minute and 30 seconds on his closest rivals. Then, the climbing begin.
Geoghegan Hart proved to be the strongest, followed by two-time defending champion Daniel Felipe Martinez. The last spot on the podium was claimed on Stage 20 when Emanuel Buchmann outpaced Diamond on the hilly 30km ITT.

Medical reports tell the story after Diamond voluntarily withdraws himself from the Vuelta.
ASTURIAS, Spain (Sept. 9, 2027) — The cycling world witness a rare sight this afternoon when one of its global icons called it quits and dropped out of the Vuelta a Espana. Battling extreme fatigue in the hot Spanish sun, Marcus Diamond was last shown on the television cameras weaving back and forth on the road.
It wasn't long after that the race radio confirmed that Diamond had gotten off his bike and into the team car on Stage 15. The defending Vuelta a Espana champion had suffered enough. He was already well over 15 minutes down in the general classification and had no luck in the breakaway on Stage 13.
A grueling first season with Team HSE-Liquigas had finally caught up to him. This is the second time during his career that Diamond has failed to finish the Vuelta. He briefly spoke with the media following the completion of the stage.
"My legs have no power," Diamond said. "As much as I wanted to tough it out and finish what I started, I had no choice. My body couldn't endure any longer. I'm hopeful that I can use the next three weeks to recover as much as possible and give a better showing at the World Championships in Greece."

Team GB executes a flawless race to win the country's first rainbow jersey since 2011.
ATHENS, Greece (Sept. 30, 2027) — The wait was worth it. One year removed from the UCI canceling the 2026 edition of the World RR Championships, a heart-warming winner and his unselfish team brought the rainbow jersey back to life.
Simon Yates looked back and saw no one in the distance as he crossed the finish to become the first Great Britain winner since Mark Cavendish in 2011. The Qantas veteran didn't get to this point by himself after 277kms of rolling hills off the southern coast of the capital city in Greece.
Against the norm, the 2022 Tour de France winner got help from his fellow countrymen. Most notably, his biggest helper turned out to be Marcus Diamond — his former teammate at SEG Racing Academy back in 2023. Diamond looked after Yates for a majority of the race and paced the peloton on numerous occasions to keep the other top favourites from breaking away.
It was a heroic return for Diamond after he was last seen gasping for air at the Vuelta a Espana a few weeks ago. His efforts this evening didn't go unnoticed, as 35-year-old Yates waited at the finish line to give Diamond a sentimental hug before heading over to victory podium. Diamond respectively finished 12th, four-plus minutes behind the new road race champion of the world.
"I don't deserve this," Yates said with tears in his eyes. "I can't thank my teammates enough for doing this for me. They did this... They did this for an old guy like me. I will never be able to thank them enough. Truly remarkable."

Looking Ahead to 2028
It's hard to believe I'll be entering my 11th professional season, where does the time go? It's also getting hard not to think that my best years are behind me. With all the new talent coming into the sport, I'm feel like I'm getting slower and slower. The stress on my body is catching up with me. But I'm a fighter. I know on my best days that I'm untouchable. I'm the best in the world at what I do and that is what drives me.
As I prepare to embark on my second season with Team HSE-Liquigas, I'm looking forward to building more chemistry with my teammates and win a few more big races. After placing 4th, 5th and 17th at the Tour de France the last three years, I'm still debating if I should give the world's greatest bike race another go. A part of me wants to just focus on the classics and save my energy for the World Championships.
But, the other part of me, only sees that yellow jersey as the ultimate prize. I've tried to win both the last few years and haven't managed either. I think it might be time to sacrifice one goal to try and achieve the other.
Still waiting for the race profiles to be released before I make my final decision.
