Gutted for Purito. I really thought he had it with 2km to go. Spain played it perfectly up to the point where Valverde let Costa go.
No complaints from me about the winner, though. As much as I wish Purito had taken it, Costa deserved that. Well played finish from him.

Nibali can be proud of his efforts after crash. He can take motivation for his preparation for next year. No other rider could have done that. Atleast he did not retire like some other nations.
If he weren't top favourite and he weren't italian, he would probably have been disqualified for his "efforts".

That final corner by Nibali is one of the worst I've ever seen. He loses like 5 secs on Costa

It seems some people on the forum canĀ“t accept the fact that one small country wich had only 3 riders racing, wins the gold...

Well deserved winner. A big congratulations to all the portuguise in here.
From my perspective it was the World Championships just like I always wanted it. Jakob Fuglsang tried his best, but obviously didn't have the legs. King Sagan wasn't able to follow, and then the "weakest" of the 4 in front ended up winning.
From a tactical point of view I really can't believe that Spain doesn't single out ONE leader. If Joaquin Rodriguez had spend all his energy on keeping the pace high for Valverde, and shutting down the attacks that would inevitable come from Nibali and Rui Costa, then Spain would have been 1st and 3rd/4th instead of 2nd and 3rd.
But that's just the way the spaniards have ridden always, and why they haven't harvested more gold medals than they have.
