Tour de France 2013 - Stage 17

The 17th stage, the end is nearing, but the first place is still wide open!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tour1701_zps004bde6d.jpg

This is the Queen's stage of the 100th edition of the Tour! Croix Fer, Galibier, Granon...

Stijn Van Gent

Today was hell, no other way to describe it. And that's actually mostly Willy's fault, but you'll see! I died up those mountainsides, but I'm very keen on finishing this Tour. I got lost between groups for the final climb...

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tour1711_zps0052ef69.jpg

When I crossed the finish line, I thought I had died. It later turned out I didn't, so I'll have to race another mountain stage tomorrow...

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tour1712_zpsd0f0cd2f.jpg

Willy Wouters

I've been sitting too still lately. I opted for an attack on the Croix Fer. Why, after those tips from Costa? Easy: it's unexpected, it creates panic and disorder. Also, Costa planned on making the jump on the Galibier. Then I'd get him to the top and finish easily.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tour1702_zpsad266fdc.jpg

After an initial stop in the peloton, some riders thought it'd be wise not to let me go too far. The peloton upped the pace and this caused big gaps earlier in the race than some suspected.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tour1703_zpsda69e316.jpg

The Galibier was beautiful and I was about 2 minutes in front of the group of the favorites. That would be good for Costa to make the jump!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tour1704_zpsf58610c3.jpg

Contador himself saw a danger in the wet roads and descended first.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tour1705_zpsd1f8de98.jpg

Alas, the jump from Costa never came. In my ear I heard some static from the team car. "Rui ... a flat... seconds behind...". Damn. There was no use in pursuing my attack, I couldn't hold guys like Contador off for another 10 km.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tour1706_zpse887e49a.jpg

And Nibali tried breaking away a bit too enthusiastically and hit the tarmac! Ouch.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tour1707_zpsf629b47b.jpg

I couldn't keep up with the big guys and got picked up by Costa, who has been provided with a new bike. We decided to go to the finish together.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tour1708_zps4a0e0146.jpg

Rolland showed off massive power for the home audience!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tour1709_zpsbb39d56e.jpg

Costa and myself came in nearly five minutes later. The tenth place was still open and he let me have it.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tour1710_zpsde1d1e4f.jpg

Well, that was tough. Just one more mountain stage, but I could expect to gain some time in the time trial. Though after 20 days of racing, I don't know what I'll be worth...

Come on Willy. Your back in the top 10 so keep it

Ian Butler
sutty68 - Thanks Wink

Stromeon - It's real tough! Just one more mountain stage and then some "rest" (flat stage)

Atlantius - GC is exciting! Thanks Wink

Jakstar22 - He'll do his best!

I don't know when the next report'll be here yet. I have some work to do and I need to see a doctor today. I also planned to watch a documentary on Jean-Pierre Monseré today, so I'll have to see! Could be soon, could be a bit later Smile

Tour de France 2013 - Stage 18

Willy Wouters

The final mountain stage. For some reason, I woke up a different person today. I spend some time watching a documentary last night, about Lucien Van Impe in 1977, about his fall on l'Alpe d'Huez. For some reason, it got through to me, it's like I see climbing as a totally different thing now, everything's much clearer!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tour1801_zpse9c0dce4.jpg

No d'Huez today, but no one should underestimate this stage!

No matter my good intentions, I was badly placed and got lost in a second group after the largest climb of the day. I didn't panic, though, and slowly closed the gap in the descend.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tour1802_zpsa2a35769.jpg

The favorites were all wasting their energy attacking each other. I came closer on a steady tempo, as you can see me nearing on the background here!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tour1803_zps106dc7fc.jpg

Costa, however, also got badly placed and it was too late for him to return. Minimizing losses was his business today.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tour1804_zpscd5f61d1.jpg

I finally joined the front group!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tour1805_zps93dc7c5c.jpg

Then it was just a matter of riding a decent sprint, but since it was a flat finish, no time gaps were to be expected.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tour1806_zps4534c515.jpg

Visconti won the sprint with three other remaining breakaway companions.

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tour1807_zps423dac96.jpg

I raced pretty good today. After a minor setback I put myself in absolute focus to return and not panic. I worked. I'm glad!

Tour de France 2013 - Stage 19

Stijn Van Gent

A sprinters stage!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tour1901_zpsa7d49549.jpg

I'm sorry to say it's over for me. It's my first Grand Tour and I'm totally wiped, totally beat. Everyone's tired, but I'm extremely tired, I already made my peace with this Tour, it's been an amazing experience, but for me it's over. I just want to reach Paris, now!

i1322.photobucket.com/albums/u569/IanButlerPCM2/tour1902_zps2be37bf4.jpg

I hung on to the wheels of the top sprinters, but I didn't have an acceleration worth mentioning. Somehow I still finished 5th, because there was a minor gap formed in a corner.

Sagan is still as fresh as ever and takes the win easily. Our man for Champs Elysée?
