That Weylandt remark is rather cheap, but i you want to discuss this specific thing, i believe that main cause for that crash was a riders mistake. He was looking back when he went like 70kms/h and did not pay enough attention. Obviously the road was not top notch, but would you better like riding only on highways or what?

Wouters death was really an unfortunate accident, but i dont think you can put it into context of this discussion, it could happen anywhere really...

Wasn't a personal attack or anything.

Of course there is risk involved. The riders accept that. But there is a limit, too, and people have to realize they can't use the riders as little pawns on a chess field. They are actual human beings and not toy riders.

So at least you can try to ensure (relative) safe conditions, decent roads and especially not letting them ride in 45°C!!!
I can't see how you can't agree with that Frown

Let me rephrase:

1. riders safety (avoid extreme situations, reduce risk)
2. spectacle

It's just common sense not to put the final kilometer of a sprint stage on narrow roads or with tram tracks or whatever.

You clearly seem to think that the riders should be paid to do nothing.

The fans dictate what makes money. The money pays the riders. That is simply it.

It is just like any job and is simply opportunity cost. Does the risk/time invested = compensation.

To think this is any different than any other job is just stupid.

I understand very well how TV works, you don't seem to understand that you alone don't pay anything still. Sponsors pay their riders to be present in TV. Not you. The fans are just the reason why sponsors are involved in the end. That's a fundemental difference, and far from "we" the fans pay him.

One could also argue that without riders there wouldn't be fans by the way, since they are giving the sponsors the incentive to invest and hope for a R-O-I in form of good company presentation. They are actually doing the work out there. Thus, good riders attract the fans, bring new fans to the sport and keep them in the sport.

You are either drunk or completely delusional.

So without riders there wouldnt be fans? No shit there wouldnt be fans because there wouldnt be a sport to watch... What is your crazy point?

Do you also think that there would be sponsors without fans?

How fucking crazy are you? It is just nuts.

The things you just said are completely loony man I dont even know what else to say.

When you become a cyclist, you assume that you're not going to be put in an unsafe situation. Does that mean that if they complain they are not doing their job? No.
Of course you'd expect there to be a certain amount of danger in riding a bicycle 70mph or more, but is it their job to ride that fats on oily ground? or tram tracks?

Also, i'd rather not see cyclists decide they don't want to Risk their lives for mediocre pay. You don't need danger for this sport to be exciting, so why make it unnecessarily dangerous?

So you clearly think every pro sport in the world has zero risk?

Hey, hey hey. I see your point and his, I'm not taking sides because I agree partially with both (I do this a lot). But if you two were both trying to convince me I'd pick him, just because you make a hash of a point when calling people loony every few words and using expletives not to emphasize your point but to insult and emphasize how crazy you think someone is. Like I said, take sides but don't do that Wink

Tbh I probably did a bit of a jandal post but yeah, hope you catch my drift.

Yes, you have a point that fans bring money indirectly, but you have to remember that fans aren't the ones who physically pay the salaries. So it's not like you can say, "Well, I pay your salary. Do as I please."

I find it quite rich that you can sit at home behind your PC screen and call this guy an idiot and coward. Any guy who manages to get to the top tier of the sport is a guy who has taken shit for years and trained his ass off for years. Perhaps you should try to see what its like to have a job where you physically punish yourself for 25-30hours a week; receive mediocre pay; get your ass handed to you at a 3week race by guys who are physically superior only because they dope; be put in a situation where the line between safety and serious injury is super thin; etc. etc.

Fans do have an influence and should, rightly so, have a say in things. But there as a fan you have no right to demand anything that unnecessarily compromises safety and health. A 230-something km stage in a GT is unnecessary.

So you think that without fans, the sponsors would pay the riders the salaries they do?

If you think that, you are an idiot.

So because I managed to get to the top tier or whatever tier of the thing I am good at, with all the known risks to my life involved I am not allowed to call out someone else for wanting the easiest way possible or basically a free lunch?

Guess what champ, he knew every single risk involved before he took the easy as he thought paycheck.

Considering the sport has been getting safer every year for decades. He is doing nothing but whining for a free paycheck.

Because I live in the real world you would side with someone else?

Because I understand facts and how they work you would side with someone else?

Good luck with that...

Well most people wouldn't need to resort to insults if they "understood facts and how they work ". Wait, what when did I even say that you didn't? I just said chill Wink

No point discussing anything with you really anymore, instead of discussing arguments you come up with petty insults.. Arn't you the guy who said that Tour Top 10 is bigger than a Vuelta win? Yes, you are. So much for the real world you live in.

But there are laws to protect employee safety in any other job, why should it be any different for cyclists.
