The Front Seat - Finishing the Job (NZ CC st. 5)
Atlantius
New Zealand Cycling Classic

Stage 4: Palmerston North (112 km)

We stay in Palmerston North for the flattest stage of the race so far. It's actually really nice to be able to stay at the same hotel during teh entire race instead of having to move every night!

Again today we left the hard labor to the teams with something to defend.

With Riwal, NTFO and 5-hour all chasing hard the break never stood a chance…

Before the stage Flakemore and I were pondering on the chance of a late attack so Teshome put in a great effort to keep him at the front towards the finale.

Somehow a couple of guys from the break has managed to make it last long forcing teh sprinter teams to chase very hard towards the end.

Flakemore made his move right after the last of the original break was caught with 5 km to go and Ewan ready to take part in the still very likely bunch sprint.

Campbell somehow maintains a gap going into the final 2 km!
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/Front%20Seat/01-20-NZ-4-6_zps639a01e2.jpg
Most sprinter teams look tired after doing a lot of chasing and they hesitate in opening the full sprint behind as no one has any helpers left and they don't want to just end up doing leadout for their rivals.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/Front%20Seat/01-20-NZ-4-7_zpse9897adf.jpg
Slovenian champion Pibernik is the first leader to start sprinting right under la flame rouge.
He was actually close to signing with me at one point, but decided to go for his home team instead!

Meanwhile Ewan is coming on the other side of the road to make sure his slipstream isn’t used by the top GC as well as making sure not to up the pace.

Today bravery is rewarded!

A beautiful win for Flakemore, who spotted that the sprinter teams were getting tired, took his moment and TT’ed his way home.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/Front%20Seat/01-20-NZ-4-9_zpsc3237f56.jpg
The sprint for the last podium place went pretty well also…
I suppose you could say that it was bad luck for Ewan and Pérez to hit this form exactly today when they weren’t allowed to go full throttle for it, but what a day for the team!!

The organizers measured Campbell to have a 17 second gap, which along with the bonus seconds puts him 23 seconds ahead on the GC before the final stage as well as bringing us to the top of the team classification.

VoetsT: Flakemore certainly got the gist of this being a target race!

fernando: Thanks, I'm really happy about the result(s) as well Grin

SSJ2Luigi: Yeah, Adria Mobil looked like they had everything under control, but in the end they were just one rider too few since Pibernik's leadout saved energy for the sprint...

the_hoyle: Thanks, I'll pass that onto Campbell Wink

New Zealand Cycling Classic

Stage 5: Palmerston North Circuit

i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/Front%20Seat/01-20-NZ-5-1_zps619d8eca.jpg
If we can keep things closed to a bunch sprint today Campbell will take the GC home as the bonus seconds are not enough for his closest rivals to challenge him anymore.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/Front%20Seat/01-20-NZ-5-2_zps4e4773a8.jpg
Yellow suits him don’t you think?
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/Front%20Seat/01-20-NZ-5-3_zps48bc4c71.jpg
The ideal situation for us would be that a break with no GC dangers went away so Rubén and Røinås were sent to the front to monitor the situation and reel in any potentially dangerous riders before they got any significant gap.
It’s situations like this where his experience is so valuable.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/Front%20Seat/01-20-NZ-5-4_zps06b69c12.jpg
Whenever the gap got larger than we wanted the African duo went to the front helping Rapha reduce the gap until we were happy again. Good job by both of them!
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/Front%20Seat/01-20-NZ-5-5_zpsbc905bc8.jpg
The remains of the break is caught just as the sprint starts. All the trains are both ready and awake today…
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/Front%20Seat/01-20-NZ-5-6_zps9f62c442.jpg
Caleb follows Keough and Blythe into the final km
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/Front%20Seat/01-20-NZ-5-7_zpseac7c829.jpg
He does his best to put in a good sprint.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/Front%20Seat/01-20-NZ-5-8_zpse90a07c8.jpg
In my humble opinion it was better than good, but once again Keough was just too strong.

A beautiful win for Flakemore and the team along with some good stages from Ewan.
Hopefully it will get noticed by potential employers for Campbell in spite his country’s biggest race being raced simultaneously with Reinhardt Janse Van Resnburg a slightly surprising winner after a successful attack on the final stage and Greg Henderson looking stronger than ever with two stage wins, two additional podiums and the points jersey.
