Aye aye, kubys. Lots of drama.
Stage 6
So here it is, the first real flat stage for the likes of Cavendish, Calzone & Viviani. Of course many sprinters in the peloton still stand a chance, but the bookmakers are clear on thing: Cavendish odds to win this stage are high and mighty. From Mola di Bari to Margherita di Savoia, a town in the southern part of Italy, close to the Adriatic sea, the road goes 153 relatively flat, however there’s a small rise in slope around half-point.
Bad weather, cows and a 4 minute lead after 60 kilometers. Things take shape nicely so far on day 6. With Le Bon and Bodnar in the break, FDJ and Cannondale finally show themselves. Of course there’s also the ever-active Bardiani team featured again in the form of Baggio. Lastly, Stijn Devolder (RTL) makes an appearance for Radioshack. A decent group, maybe they’ll get lucky? Behind in the peloton, Androni, AG2R La Mondiale, Sky and Omega Pharma share the workload.
The little bump in the road is behind the BOTD, and their lead is still solid with 3 minutes. However, it’s diminishing and they havn’t even reached the intermediate yet. It looks like another hopeless chapter of breakaway attempt at this year’s Giro d’Italia. In the peloton, Orica GreenEdge puts in the most numbers at the time with 4 riders taking turns. AG2R La Mondiale has 3 guys upfront, while SKY only commits with one rider to the effort of reeling the break back in.
Felline takes charge of the peloton for a second before Orica GreenEdge rushes pass him again. Cavendish was the only sprinter to score at the intermediate though. The break still has 2’30 lead.
Crash by Quintana, but he is quick to get up. And he would have made it into the peloton, but there was a second crash just shortly thereafter, which included Uran, Sulzberger and Majka initially. This held up large parts at the back of the peloton. So, although Quintana quickly reached other riders again, some gaps have appeared in the peloton. De Los Campos from Euskaltel and Burton from Argos are caught back there too now. SKY and especially Movistar are now working hard to get back to the peloton or at least minimize the time loss for their leaders today. This turned now into an desperate attempt of chasing the peloton, and both teams don't stand much chance. Quintana must realize in these moments that he lost the Giro for good now. A bitter pill to swallow for the likeable young Colombian.
They reach the finish line, but still have an additional lap to pass. With a lead of merely a minute and still 15 km ahead of them, the BOTD stands no real chance anymore. The peloton is already gearing up at the horizon and sprinters begin their fight for positions.
Canvedish, Goss, Viviani all are close together. Brookes (BAR) on the far right is on the wheel of Calzone. Hanzen, Stromberg and Nizzolo are bit further back. The only real lead-out that can be spotted may be the one of Orica GreenEdge, which consists of Gerrans & Matthews for Goss, while Steegmans & Petacchi are up there, but Cavendish isn’t on their wheel yet.
5 kilometers: The break is still up there, did the people forget to chase during all the train-building? Three can be made out by now. Omega Pharma (Steegmans, Petacchi, Cavendish), Androni (Pellizotti, Felline, Calzone) and Orica Green Edge (you know who you are guys…)
Pellizotti in the form of his life? He makes some major moves and rides extremely clever through the bunch of Orica GreenEdge rider, that call it a day (Albasini, Hepburn etc). Through that Androni gains some advantage on the Omega Pharma train. Viviani jumped ahead and catched the wheel of Calzone. The break is merely 100 meter ahead of the bunch. Meanwhile, we get word that De los Campos (EUS) fell and took some riders with him.
Baggio is the last to be caught. We can see how Petacchi outmaneouvers him, while Pellizotti is totally done for the day and Felline launches the sprint on the left side too now. Petacchi is lucky to not crash into the bushes here. Cavendish on his wheel seems ready, Matthews launches back there already.
Alert, Alert: The Manx Missile launches! And is ready for impact! A fabulous lead-out by Petacchi and still Matthews and Goss would have maybe stood a chance, but Cavendish’s Acceleration is ready to cut a line here. TMM makes a stand.
With some incredible speed, he blazes through the finish. That was out of this world. Only speed talks today, and Cavendish screams the loudest! Behind him the Australian Duo Matthews & Goss pick up the remaining scrambles, while Hanzen gets beaten by Viviani to the fifth place. Cavendish also takes the point jersey from Brouwers, who wasn't seen anywhere in the sprint.
While Cavendish and Omega Pharma have their sponsor goal fulfilled, Movistar and SKY have taken a real beating today. Quintana and Uran both lost 5 minutes time and now fell out of GC contention. No way of coming back from that, however a decent Top 10 result may at least be possible for Quintana still. Surely too little though for the ambitious climber and his superb spanish team.

WTF Brouwer? But at least this is good news for Kelderman. It's not Knockout's race
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

What the heck Brouwer?!
Erm... He's ill. I'm sure of that. (Could even be possible, given that he didn't do well in the previous stage either).
Poor Movistar.

It's like waiting for brewers to see TVG lose 6 minutes, but even worse

I can't even blame AI as this was not a tactical mistake but just bad luck. Two crashes that together destroyed the good chances for a podium (and perhaps also my support squad was too weak for close the gap then) . I dont give up this giro yet but it will be difficult to get onto the podium (which is my sponsor goal). At least some more stage wins should be possible as Quintana should be allowed to get a (very little) bit of freedom not

He can still do it, there is a little bit of hope, if he isn't injured.

Sure but a Nibali with home advantage is surely not a rival which you easily steal 8 minutes..

I think I have to agree with Brouwer sick or injured, his last two stages were awful. Is there a way to check that in the database?

@Ollfardh
Well, it's probably an ''invisible'' injury(I'm serious), and I don't think you can even check that. We just have to assume so. At least I have an excellent excuse now for Willem underachieving. Though I would've liked the points jersey a lot.

Well at this point in the race I wouldn't have expected Bennati to be nearly 10 minutes ahead of Majka but there we go At least Kreuziger is staying out of trouble and looking decent.
As others have said, I too feel sorry for knockout - it's pretty bad seeing a potential victory/podium go up in smoke due to crashes.

If Brouwer would perform in both stage 5 and 6, he would definitely have a chance.
Plus, stage 19 might get cancelled.

Hanzen Top10 for the 5th? time now. Having a great race. Helps ease the pain for Uran losing time, as does Porte still being 3rd.
Finally see FDJ at the front. I'm not that bothered as his was not a serious race for us at all

Personally, I'm hoping for a big comeback of Quintana in Week 2. Maybe even take the KoM jersey. Nothing would be more boring than the anticipated Nibali domination.
Crashes are part of cycling, of course. If it hadn't been for the bad AI on stage 4 though, I doubt Quintana would have been in the second half of the peloton (then again, Uran was there too).
@TMM: Hanzen is really a beast. You wern't lying when you hailed consistency as one of his biggest strength.
