Movistar makes a bold move to partner with the American company,
drawing a mixed reactions among fans and other managers.
Madrid, Spain - In a crazy twist of events Manager Mresuperstar decided to do what many are calling a "death wish" to his popularity.
The American manager who has spent the last three seasons in Spain with Team CSC-Orbea signed on with Movistar for the 2015 season.
The Spanish connection seemed like a logical leap.
The team's Twitter account broke the news Friday saying they
had reached an agreement with an American sponsor,
confirmed earlier today to be US Postal.
"Yes, we have reached a 1-year deal with US Postal," Mresuperstar said.
"The rumors are true, next season we will become Movistar - US Postal."
US Postal is most known for it's involvement in the infamous
Lance Armstrong doping scandal in the early 2000's, in 2012
Armstrong was stripped of his seven Tour de France victories.
Although Mre is trying his best to ignore the elephant in the room.
"This isn't about Lance," he said. "This is about a sponsor wanting a second chance to help in restoring their brand identity. They want to distance themselves from Lance and his corrupt ways; a fresh start.
I'm happy I get to be apart of it."
When asked later about the team's use of a blurred out Armstrong image to announce they had signed with an American sponsor
Mre said that wasn't a public relations mistake.
"We know people associate US Postal with Lance. We wanted to see
if that notion was still present today and what the reaction would be
from our fans and fellow managers."
"To be honest, I'm expecting a lot of backlash," Mre said.
"If this decision makes us a villain for a while, so be it."
And the question we just had to ask: What's Mre stance on Lance?
"Lance got me into cycling, without Lance I'm not here. That said,
I'm not a 'fan' of what he did — lied and back-stabbed an entire country
for his own personal gain. That makes me sick to my stomach."
Will the unique combination of Movistar and US Postal succeed?
If there is one manager that could pull it off it would Mresuperstar.
And our chances of signing an American take another hit Still i like USPS (yeah i said it!) and it's great to see them in the MG alongside riders like Ricco
Wow, this team has taken alot of differents turns lately, I guess Tenorio and Madrazo are still top priority? Which means you still have to get rid of Abal, which I dont mind
@cio93: You're welcome. Thanks for being our first hater.
@TMM: Focus will probably be 50/50 between Spain and USA. So, if I can get 6-12 Americans riders to partner with Newton then I'll be content. So, just don't bid on the guys I bid on and you'll be fine.
@dev4ever: Tenorio and Madrazo are still top list. Although to build a solid team probably means we can only afford one. And yes, I'm still leaning toward selling Abal.
@aidanvn13: Guilty, yes a lot of twists, but I'm a story writer I can get away with that. I struggled to make up my mind, but I'm happy now with this.
And I did say "mixed reactions", glad to see people are willing to say they like US Postal (or Lance). Looking forward to transfers like everyone else, should be crazy as always.
But like you mentioned in your PM, I think it's a great idea to say that Postal is looking to "rebuild" its image. And what better way to do it than by sponsoring your team?
@aidanvn13: Exactly. Can't wait to see the jersey you can come up with.
@Gustav: Certainly less time in the Portuguese market, but I'll poke around to see if I can steal a few riders. And yes, no LA as DS so I can maintain my friendly rival.
Plaza wins #MGNC Spanish TT! Last big win of his career? Last win under Mre's management? Only time will tell. pic.twitter.com/bD1wB2ahxb
