Great racing. What are Caleb Ewans stats might I ask?

the_hoyle
@sutty: Yates was outstanding. Tired legs, yes, but that wouldn't stop him. The contest was over in the first two KoM sprints.

@Jak: Glad you are enjoying it Smile his stats are unchanged from the PCM Expansion pack Smile

Hoyle Hearing: Fine and Suspended Ban the only outcome!

Whilst Valentine's Love was still in the air for some people, Rapha-Bianchi Racing Team manager Phil Hoyle was in Switzerland today to find out his fate following a clash with Katusha bosses at the Tour de San Luis. Sadly for Hoyle, not much was being dealt out by the UCI, as he was hit with a large fine and a suspended ban, pending his future actions.

The hearing also revealed the details of the incident, which had been previously kept out of the world's media:
Hoyle stormed into the Katusha Team bus, angered by the actions of Russian rider Dmitriy Kozontchuk and the team bosses during Stage 5 of the Tour de San Luis. When faced with the Katusha security aboard the bus, Hoyle forced his way past, pushing one of the men over a chair, causing him to hit head and require several stitches for a very deep cut, and causing damage to the bus itself.

Hoyle was then dragged off the bus, as Race Officials and Security became involved in the matter. Outside the bus, Hoyle clashed with Katusha's Directeur Sportif José Azevedo, and the pair had to be dragged apart by their team members before Hoyle walked away using threatening and abusive language towards officials and Katusha staff.

Hoyle has been hit with €2,500 fine for his actions, and a suspended race ban, pending his future actions. He declined to comment to the media after the hearing, but it is rumoured he will not appeal against the charges.

Rapha bosses, however, did make their opinion known upon the news of Hoyle's punishment, stating that this is not type of publicity they like to be associated with, and will be considering the team's future actions, on and off the road.

Tour of Langkawi
21st February - 2nd March 2013

www.ltdl.com.my/pix/2013_main_top_02.jpg

The team's first race after the hearing is at the Tour of Langkawi in Malaysia. With bad publicity surrounding the team, I have the Rapha bosses watching the team like a hawk, so extra pressure is added to get a good result.

We do come here with a strong team, aimed at the GC, as well as the sprints. Remy Di Gregorio will lead the team, with Dan Lloyd and Dan Fleeman acting a climbing domestiques.

Caleb Ewan is looking at continuing his fine start with the team, by leading the team in the sprints. His lead out is completed by our stars from Mallorca, in the form of Philip Lavery and Simon Yates.

Two clear objectives for the team in Malaysia from me: Top 5 on GC and Sprints Jersey winner. In my eyes, very obtainable targets.

Hahahahha Froomey... Frown Will be a tough race for the team. Wink

Those Katusha people were obviously asking for it. I hope he got some swings at Azevedo. Pfft

the_hoyle
@mvh: yep... Froome is in the Start list! Strong squad from Sky, but what level of fitness they are in is another question. As for the Katusha incident - No Comment Wink

@Cycleman: I am quietly confident about the Points Target. Consistancy will be key

@Sutty: No katusha present so the team buses are safe Wink

Race Tactics

Flat stage opens the 2013 Tour of Langkawi, with all the focus on the sprinters. An easy day on paper, but the varied weather conditions could play their part. The team will work for Caleb today, with Fleeman looking after Di Gregorio against potential time losses.

Race Report

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0003_zps31d179ef.jpg

It was a break of two that got away at the start of the stage, Lane (BCP) and Schmalz (HSD) off the front.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0004_zps27483ad0.jpg

The early pace making was made by BMC and GreenEdge, but they did not appear worried by the breakaway.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0006_zps1c601201.jpg

A very uneventful start to the stage was livened up slight for the team, as Dan Fleeman suffered a puncture. Quick wheel change and he joined back with the peleton in no time.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0007_zps8cc079e4.jpg

With third place at the intermediate sprints available for the peleton, the stage saw some early lead-out action, and a bit of a taster for finish today.

Sprint Point 1
1. P. Lane // 2. J. Schmalz // 3. A. Kruopis

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0009_zps20bbffd4.jpg

The break looked very comfortable out on the route, building their lead up, as it pushed towards the 5 minute mark.

Time Gap -- 50km
Peleton > 5'06 > Leaders

Sprint Point 2
1. J. Schmalz // 2. P. Lane // 3. C. Ewan

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0010_zpsd7cb1ce9.jpg

The relaxed nature of peleton was clear to see, as Tuft (OGE) had time to have a good stretch, despite being close to the front of the main group.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0013_zpsd50f852c.jpg

As the stage wore on, the more BMC and GreenEdge became to up the pace of the peleton, aided by Bardiani and Saxo-Tinkoff.

Time Gap -- 120km
Peleton > 3'01 > Leaders

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0017_zps92714257.jpg

CRASH! El Fares (SOJ) hits the deck hard. It was nice to see him get back to his feet, but it would be the last time that he would see the peleton today.

Sprint Point 3
1. P. Lane // 2. J. Schmalz // 3. C. Ewan

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0018_zpse6196956.jpg

20km to go, and the gap was down to just over a minute. Surely they could not hold onto this gap until the finish.

Mountain Sprint 1 -- Cat.3
1. J. Schmalz // 2. P.Lane // 3. S. Clarke

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0020_zps381e023d.jpg

The climb to the Cat.3 KoM sprint was the killing point for the break, and with 10km to go, it was all brought back together.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0021_zps90b64b6f.jpg

As the lead-outs got themselves organised, it was clear that three teams wanted to take control. We were just hanging on as GreenEdge forced the pace.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0022_zps7218c50b.jpg

At the Flamme Rouge, GreenEdge looked to have it all wrong. BMC took full control and looked certain to take the win.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0024_zps85783f5a.jpg

What a sprint! Breschel and Ewan come from nowhere to make a fight of the win. Breschel takes the win, with Oss just holding onto second ahead of Caleb.

Stage Debrief

Another good day for the team on the road. Caleb looked well out of it as the sprint started, but amazing fight to take a podium. More of the same tomorrow for me, and proof that the team have not been affected by the recent events away from the racing.

Great result for Ewan, who I think is your only chance of podiums here. Wink

@Selwink: if he can keep that fast finishing kick then I am sure good things will come Smile

@yeah the 70 metres was a little optimistic for a KoM sprint. And where is your sense of belief in Di Gregorio to get a podium in the mountains Wink

@sutty: great start for the team. a sign of things to come?

I will post the next stage(s) of Langkawi tomorrow. Just a heads up though... Langkawi is so boring! Think I will shorten the reports for Langkawi and get on to some more exciting races Wink

Race Report

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0002_zpscf0d907b.jpg

Three riders would form the break of the day, with Lane (BCP) yet again off the front, most likely looking for the bonus seconds and KoM points.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0004_zps6632e58f.jpg

The break would soon become four, as Bosman (TIR) jumped across the gap.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0009_zps4669287a.jpg

The quartet of riders worked well to build their lead, and had nearly 4 minutes gap as they hit the Cat.1 climb.

Time Gap -- 65km
Peleton > 3'50 > Leaders

Mountain Sprint -- Cat.1
1. M. Ishibashi // 2. P. Lane // 3. A. Schmitt

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0012_zps1ae83d9c.jpg

Bardiani, BMC and Orica took control of the peleton over the top of the climb, and started to turn up the gas on the descent, as th chase began.

Sprint Point 2
1. A. Schmitt // 2. M. Ishibashi // 3. P. Lane

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0016_zpsd3e27407.jpg

With the gap closing fast, the break tried their best to stay away. Bosman was the first to drop back into the peleton, but soon enough everything was pulled back together.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0017_zps3b050201.jpg

The lead-outs began to form nearing the finish, again with Orica and Rapha-Bianchi being the most dominate. Could Caleb improve on his 3rd yesterday...

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0018_zpsc895b34c.jpg

Sprint begins, and we decide on going for a long one! Would the tactic pay off? As he hit the front, it was looking good.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0019_zpsd5f8084b.jpg

But it isn't to be for Caleb! Kroupis (OGE) takes the win, ahead of a fast finishing Candelario (OPT) and Oss (BMC). Caleb faded in the last 100metres and finishes 6th.

Stage Debrief

The boys were unlucky in the end. The lead out was fantastic, but Caleb just doesn't have it in his legs to go for a long sprint like some of the other guys can.

Tomorrow, we head into the Mountains, and it will be time fer Remy and Dan Fleeman to take priority. Let's see if they can keep up with the big guns of the cycling peleton, in Froome, Mollema and Keldermann.

As the break approached the first KoM sprint of the day, their lead was a slender one, as the peleton closed in quickly.

As the climb began, a lot of the bigger teams sat back. The decision was made to Yates and Lloyd to set the tempo.

Seeing his chance to make up some time, El Fares attacked up the climb.

He would soon be brought back, as Lloyd and now Fleeman set tempo, reducing the number in the main group to 32 riders.

Just a handful of riders were left in the group as we approached the top of the HC climb. Seeing his opportunity, Remy attacked, taking Frank (BMC) with him.

Remy was having issues staying with Frank, and the Swiss rider was soon soloing to the win. Behind the pair, Froome had attacked the GC favourites, and was closing in on Frank and Remy at pace.

Victory goes to Frank, who just holds on as Froome catches him on the line. Remy comes home 5th place, in the same group as Dan and the GC Favourites 1'14 down on the BMC man.

Stage Debrief

Well, I think I will start my looking back at my words from before the stage:

Like at Vuelta a Mallorca, we might leave the work to the other big teams...

Safe to say that that didn't happen, did it? And I think that it completely unravelled the plan for the stage. We wanted to wait until the last moment, like Froome did, to attack with a fresh, well-protected Remy, but instead it was an early, 'let's hope for the best' attack from a tired, unprotected Remy. The stage win was easy for Frank after that, and Remy limped home in 5th, and only just at that.

Positives from the stage: Remy is in the KoM jersey, and with no KoM sprints tomorrow, will take that in the other Mountain stage of this race. In the fight for the Green Sprints jersey, only Caleb managed to score points in the Intermediate sprints, and is now 4 points better off than he was at the start of the day.

Completely flat stage tomorrow, so focus back to Caleb. Let's see how his legs are after a lot of climbing today.

Not a bad effort from Remy, but with so many riders still on s.t. the GC could go either way. Wink

Also, good 6th for Ewan on the previous stage. Would be nice if he can take another podium. Smile

Vuelta a la Region de Murica
23rd February 2013

4.bp.blogspot.com/-_Q_Aj-jpZm4/USimTANBk5I/AAAAAAAARJQ/XNuB5N4t7bI/s1600/logo_vuelta_murcia.jpg

With one part of the team out in Malaysia, another one tackles the up and coming European Classics season, with us first heading back to Spain for the Vuelta a la Region de Murica.

Once a 5 stage race, the race today is just a single Mountain stage, geared towards an out and out climber than a Puncheur rider.

With that in mind, we come here with a squad who can hopefully shine like we did in Mallorca. Davide Villella and Adam Yates will once again co-lead the team, where they will be supported by Nathan Earle, Trent Lowe and Fredrik Ludvigsson.

The team will also see debut rides for Rene Mandri, Tom Southam and Simon Richardson, as they start their preparation for the European Hilly classics and other future goals.

The sponsors are looking for a Top 5 finish, but like in Mallorca, I will be happy with a ride where look like we can compete with the big guns of cycling.
