Volta ao Algarve: Team registrations
The riders have arrived well in Portugal. Many have been wondering who would turn up as only few startlists were made public before the start, but now we’ll give you a quick run-down of the favourites.
It’s a hard race to predict. The first two stages could be decent for the strong sprinters, who can survive the hills, but if they are made hard everyone will have to stay awake not to get caught in the wrong group.
The third stage will most likely go to a classic puncheur, while the last two stages are dedicated to the sprinters and the TT-specialists. But now let’s get some names on the table..
There’s a lot of decent sprinters ready in Portugal, but Andrea Guardini (SGL) have to be considered a major favourite for any bunch sprints – if he can survive the hills.
In the second row of sprinters Ventoso (CCC), Ulriksson (SGL) and Mosby (TCW) should be able to survive most of the hills in good condition while we mustn’t underestimate guys like Yanick Ertzen (SEP), Keukeleire (MAG) and Förster (MAP) either.
Even on the hills Mosby is looking like one of the strongest riders along with Gasparotto (PER). That said Ulriksson will be a challenge as well. Just as home favourite Rui Costa (TAP) should be highly motivated for this race. Other riders to watch counts the likes of Detreute (MAG), Moser (BUL), Henao (CCC), Tiernan-Locke (AXA) and Stybar (PER).
We might very well see a very open field before the final 20 km of TT’ing. ING have brought Alex Rasmussen with this particular stage in mind as has Sony Ericsson with Gustav Larsson.
The likes of Kessiakoff (SEP), Zubeldia (RBM), Detreute (MAG), Hernández (RBM) and homeboy Costa (TAP) will be hoping to take the GC win based on a good TT.
So who do we now have for the GC?
Mosby and Ulriksson will be major candidates to hold the jersey until the last stage where they most likely will lose it to someone who knows how to TT…
Having mentioned Detreute as an outsider on both the hills and the TT he will be a major candidate to the GC win along with riders like Costa and Kessiakoff, but much will be decided on how the racing turns out on the first few stages.

Yeah, I really like the preview.
Nice to see ING mentioned, even though the ING line-up is quite weak

Volta ao Algarve
Stage 1: L'Estadio Algarve - Albufeira
126 riders ready for action!
Bajadali (CSC) opens the attacking right at the start. After a lot of struggling he is joined by Pirazzi (NAC), Bagdonas (PER), Østergaard (RBM), Silin (CAT), Richardson (ITV), Ludvigsson (SEP) and Van Poppel (TCS).
At least it looks like these eight will be BOTD until Kiendys (AXA), Lindeman (ING), De Kort (ING), Bardet (BUL) and Van Winden (DOM) decide to form another break. After a bit of struggling they join the 8 ahead.
When starting the sprint for the first intermediate with 97 km to go the break has 5’28’’ to the peloton.
Kiendys takes the sprint ahead of Van Winden and De Kort.
Having no riders in the break TAP, Magners and CC Café take turns leading the pack.
With 77 km to go the gap is up to 7’20’’ but slowly starting to decrease. No time for Oranges just yet.
The first mountain sprint goes uncontested to Lindeman followed by De Kort and Bardet.
Not all ING-riders enjoy the hill just as much as the breakers. Rasmussen (ING), Young (AXA), Eichler (TCS), Ertzen (SEP), England (CAT), Ewan (CAT) and Guardini (SGL) lose contact with the peloton.
The second intermediate sprint goes uncontested. Lindeman takes it ahead of Bardet and Pirazzi.
48 km to go and a gap of 4’29’’. SGL have sent one rider to assist CC Café, Magners and TAP – Michelin in the chase.
Bakker (SGL), Chavanel (TCS) and Cozza (DOM) get lost behind as a result of the high speed in the peloton.
Still no one in the break feels like fighting for the mountain jersey, so the points go uncontested to Richardson followed by Bagdonas and Silin.
The break now has 19,7 km to go and a gap of 4’04’’. Looks like they could make it!
With 10 km to go peloton just fight to limit the damage as TAP’s Portuguese Champion Cabreiro take part in the chase.
If it ends with a sprint in the 13-rider group Bagdonas and Van Poppel will be the favourites. The Dutchman have pretty much been sitting in the back of the group all day, so he should have some energy left.
No one in the break seem willing/able to attack, so they enter the last three km on a long line. Pirazzi and Bajadali open early.
2 km to go and Bajadali is in the lead.
1,4 km to go and Østergaard opens his sprint.
500 m left and it looks like Østergaard vs. Bardet.
But Bagdonas is coming fast from behind. This will be decided right on the line!
Spoiler
The Lithuanian takes it!
Ulriksson wins the pelotons sprint four minutes later.

Wow. That was a surprise. Really, really happy that this happened. Didn't expect a lot of Top 10's except in the TT. But now a Top 10+ Top 3+ KoM Jersey + Team classification(which I think the team can hold for some more stages)
Really have to post a banana now...
Also, nice report Atlantius! Maybe you should post a stage-profile at the start of the report? Just a suggestion
