Stromeon: It's looking like it
juszta: I agree, thanks
baggieboys32: Thank you very much for that comment! I always try to give the story a little extra, and it's just great when it's appreciated that much!
rogvi97: I also hope they can do decent things in Italy! We'll see about those names, maybe they'll stick, maybe they won't

Tirreno - Adriatico :: Stage 1
Well, we're finally here. Our first experience in a World Tour race. Not just some World Tour race. Most recent winner: Cadel Evans. Startlist includes: Mark Cavendish, Farrar, Hushovd, Gilbert, Cancellara, Van Garderen, Valverde, Boonen, Rodriguez, Freire, EBH, Uran, Anton... Wait a minute, what are we doing here?
The answer to that question is this:
1 | Team Garmin-Barracuda | 17'53 | | 2 | Radioshack Nissan Trek | + 6 | | 3 | BMC Racing Team | + 15 | | 4 | Team Saxo Bank | s.t. | | 5 | Movistar Team | + 25 | | 6 | Omega Pharma-Quick-Step Cycling Team | + 35 | | 7 | Orica-GreenEDGE | s.t. | | 8 | Farnese Vini Selle Italia | + 46 | | 9 | Katusha Team | + 52 | | 10 | Rabobank Cycling Team | s.t. | | 11 | Liquigas-Cannondale | + 1'07 | | 12 | Astana Pro Team | s.t. | | 13 | Ag2r La Mondiale | + 1'24 | | 14 | Sky Pro Cycling | + 1'26 | | 15 | Vacansoleil-DCM Pro Cycling Team | s.t. | | 16 | FDJ-BigMat | + 1'37 | | 17 | Lampre-ISD | s.t. | | 18 | Euskaltel Euskadi | + 1'56 | | 19 | Lotto Belisol | + 2'05 | IanButler | 20 | Acqua & Sapone | s.t. | |
This is what we're doing here. Anyway, we plan on growing a lot here. And we're actually quite glad about not being completely last. Mostly that's because of Willy, pulling almost half of the entire time trial. After the race we had some (non-alcoholic) beverages with the Acqua & Sapone team. We agreed that we might be able to help each other here, since we're all up to these massive cannons like Cavendish, Cancellara...
See you tomorrow, that's when the real racing starts! |

Not a great start at all for the Lotto boys
Did you play it or simulate it |

I never learned to play TTT, so I simulated. A bad start, but at least it gives Willy a goal to claw his way into the top of the rankings |

Tirreno - Adriatico :: Stage 2
We can't possibly do worse than yesterday, so let's roll!
It seems likely that things will turn out in a sprint. But there's a long way to go before the sprint. Stijn will try to hang on and go for it!
For me it was a good day. I had a great time and was able to have a nice chat with Stijn. However, the pace was high and riding in World Tour isn't as easy as San Luis, for example.
Liquigas must've had a lot of confidence in young gun Peter Sagan, as they and Sky (for Cavendish) spent the entire day chasing the breakaway.
Lotto Belisol tried to stay together but only four of us made the finish in the peloton. Dockx already lost 23 minutes. This is hard work, that's for sure.
I finished safely in the pack, waiting eagerly, but also frightfully, for the first hills and mountains.
I digested the mountains fairly well today. I felt like I might even play for the marbles here today!
I found a pretty good lead-out (thanks, Démare!) and started sprinting!
Liquigas' confidence in its leader was justified, as Sagan easily wins the stage!
I kept going good and didn't mess up, I was definitely sprinting for a top place. In the end, it was an unexpected 6th place, what a great day for me!
I didn't see this coming. Maybe this means I can do even better tomorrow? Although today might've been more my kind of stage, as it's been a tough ride to the finish. The absolute speed was lacking and I'm better when it's tougher, like today's winner, Peter Sagan.

6th place, what a great result in his first WT outing!
Let's go chase down the Tourminator, maybe get on the podium if you get lucky in a stage?

Paris - Nice :: Update
Paris - Nice has been raced for a big part. 6 stages have already been decided and only two stages are left. Greipel managed to bring the team two victories and is looking extremely well on the Points Classification. Now we're counting on Jurgen for the overall classification.
Tirreno - Adriatico :: Stage 3
Yesterday we saw the Tourminator prevailing. Will we see more of that today, or will the Manx Missile retake his throne?
Flatter than yesterday, this stage requires almost no climbing. The finale will be exciting, as the roads aren't big enough for all of us sprinters here. Stijn will try to meddle in the sprint anyway, he'll have to learn it eventually, this is great experience!
One thing struck me today: Italy is a beautiful country to ride around in.
The four-man breakaway was never any real threat to the peloton and they would be reeled in on time.
Like yesterday, it was mostly Sky and Liquigas doing the work for their world class sprinters!
But seeing as this was the final flat stage, this was my final chance to "relax". I was attentive and kept to the front, but I started realizing tomorrow might be the hardest stage I've ever had to race. Keeping up with Gilbert on hilly terrain, seems impossible. But I want to try.
The rest was up to Stijn...
Today was fast-paced and led to the obvious mass sprint. Strangely, I felt less confident than yesterday, where the race had been hard on everybody. Now I wasn't sure what speed to expect at the finish, but I was well prepared. Well before the finish, I managed to hang on to Sagan's wheel!
But things got hectic, and there was a real war for lead-outs. Turning the one but last corner, I was nowhere near the front.
I managed to grab hold of Freire's wheel and moved up fast in his slipstream. The final corner was dangerously close to the finish and it's a miracle nobody got hurt. One moment I was blocked in at a speed of over 60km/h. I can honestly say I was afraid, but only afterwards, at the moment I wasn't thinking, you shouldn't. I was only sprinting.
As yesterday, Sagan didn't disappoint and took the victory, second in a row for the young talent.
I slowed down a little bit near the end but finished beyond expectations anyway. My 10th place today seems even greater than my 6th place yesterday, since today was one for all sprinters. This time I got actually beaten by the Manx Missile, but still I stand among great sprinters, and that's more than I came here for!
I'm extremely proud of myself. I did well here, and I can't wait for the classics. I've grown so much already and I really have the entire team to thank for that. If I look who I beat today, I can't help but smile widely. I hope Willy can say the same in a few days, when heading into the mountains!

JuanMotr: Thanks a lot! This time I'm really proud of the results, since the stats are lower and the difficulty is higher
FreitasPCM: Thanks, it's not easy between bigshots like Cav and Sagan!
rigvo97: Indeed, he's really building form. It won't be that useful for the rest of Tirreno, but let's hope he can carry it into the cobbled classics! |
