They believe that the girl has been raped, killed and dumped somewhere in the huge forest areas around Oslo... So sad |

New York city is about a 1-2 hour drive from here. That happens several times a day there. Indeed very sad. However not surprising.
Oh wait this is Norway.
But why was a 16 year old girl coming home in the middle of the night? Where I come (or close to it) from she's asking for it.

Welcome to Norway, sir.
Norwegian parents are very lenient and will often leave their 15-16 year old alone for a weekend while they are away for parties, weddings, etc... I and most of my friends have been home alone for several days |

Because a young girl is out (having fun) in the night she asks for being raped and slaughtered?
That makes no sense to me |

That's one of the rapists classical excuse : she was asking for it. Totally lame.
In what kind of world can't people go home at the time they want without getting assaulted ? |

And I never said that is right. It's horrible. But it's fairly careless is all i'm saying.

Okay, if you say it like that: I agree.
Though it sucks that walking the streets as a young women is a careless thing. Then you realize that something is f-ed up big time here, something is wrong. |

Not where I live, but close to it, and I've been there to see those kind of things. If a girl is raped is NYC, it doesn't make international headlines.

Nah, don't worry, they've the death penalty there, at least in some states, no criminal would dare doing such a thing in those conditions.
Oh wait...
Btw, was there really less crime in the former communist countries ? Me's got doubts. |

It's in man's nature. Capitalism or communism or whatever are just ways of trying to control man and live together with rules and agreements. Truth is, we are not controlled and civilized, merely sedated. And once in a while the beast finds its way to the surface. |

Well it was not technically a crime to kill anybody who doesn't agree with you and your govt.
I'm not a woman, so I wouldn't know. But if you go out without a car or company past midnight, you're vulnerable, and you should know it.

Who gets the death penalty? Mainly poor african american/hispanic young men who have been involved in burglaries gone bad.
Why are the penalties for people who fraud millions of dollars way lower than for rape and murder? |

Given the context I think he's not comparing US capitalism with the former East Block, but rather with Norwegian "mixed economy" (which after all is capitalism with a stronger influence from the state). Norwegian crime rates are very low iirc.
@Ian: Man's nature is bullshit.

1. That is not true. Who told you this info? It's the stereotype, but not usually true.
2. Because taking someone's life is more important than money.

There were speculations about how long a "head" keeps living after being chopped off the body around the French Revolution time.
Legend has it that Georges Danton (famous character) was asked to blink twice if he was still conscious. When the executioner picked his head in the basket he blinked once, so, you don't pass out (nor away) instantly when your head is cut.
Poor Danton, at least Marat didnt need to blink in his bath.
I studied thousands of pages about this subject, my favourite (if this can be said about this carnage) historical period.
Not long enough i finished with Simon Schama's book "Citizens: A Chronicle of the French Revolution", epic book of 970pages. Not the best book on topic, but it follows interesting fates of some people. He is pretty much focused on terror and the bad things around the revolution and does not mention the positives of efforts to build cicil society...
