EPIC - Season 2 Part 1

More than Evans did in the whole of last season. IN A BUNCH SPRINT. I'm so done.

That was the post I waiteed for when realizing Evans was one of the Orica riders Wink

It was a pretty standard stage really except for the bunch sprint. Guido was dropped off at the front with 3 km to go and then everyone just started sprinting with only Markus following someone else. Not a single train in spite of FIVE Orica-riders sprinting.

Hoping for some more traditional sprinting on the following stages...

Orica are going all in here it seems. Nice victory for AG2R, Markus seems like a good signing for these CT races with multiple flat stages.

Good to see Rick in the break but ffs, I really need a top notch sprinter next year. My guys don't even care.

I will take that as an opener, another one to get through before Camaron highlands.

nice showing of Feunard in Langkawi and Najeed in the Top 10 is great aswell.

since I'm posting anyways: the joke that was the last stage of Oman is starting to get old now so I think I'm almost ready for that report. just some proof reading to do and if I can get true that without rolling on the floor laughing, it's all guuuud Cool

Tour of Oman - Stage 6

After 5 stages we have reached to end of this year’s Tour of Oman. The sprinters get their final chance for victory today. Though some attackers are looking to beat them using the small climbs near the end of the stage

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0083_zpsjxualug3.jpg

We see some regulairs in the breakaway today: Orbe (EUS), Murphy (UHC), Valencia (COL), Feunard (CCC), Mori (LAM) and Verona (TNE) are the guys with experience. Xu (CSS) and Lovelock-Fay (DPC) are the rookies in the break.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0084_zpsarxsmq9f.jpg
Best rider in the GC: Orbe (EUS) 70th 19’05”

Breakaway experience however doesn’t secure good results as Feunard decided (or wasn’t able to) to drop from the breakaway back to the peloton.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0085_zpswwe0yt1q.jpg
curios move from the Frenchman

We’ve reached the final circuit that will be raced three times. The peloton has the breakaway in sight which meant to that the riders in the breakaway start to make desperate attacks.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0086_zps8owkbizg.jpg
Lovelock-Fay can’t hang on anymore

The breakaway was doomed and when they were eventually caught with 9 k to go, we had an attack out of the peloton. Contador was the one that tries to take the stage or maybe even the GC. He needs 1’32” on Riblon.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0087_zpsj2zpk7sx.jpg
Contador attacking on the climb

AG2R needs to start working fast as Contador is gaining time quickly, over a minute already. Bérard is already at the front to work but no other riders are close.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0088_zps3xbbn5ge.jpg
De las Campos started to chase solo, he could take a spot on the final podium

AG2R trusts on the sprinter teams to bring Contador back but is that the smartest thing to do?

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0089_zpska5nqhfx.jpg
Degenkolb with Bozic and Ponzi, Hanzen with Felline and Dillier and Demare with Soupe

On leadouts are going to help today, they fade away immediately after getting into place. We have on train of various stations.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0090_zpspdnvbm5v.jpg
Bozic <- Degenkolb <- Hanzen <- Demare <- Ferrari likely fighting for 3rd place as even da los Campos is out of reach

After a 4th place on the mountain stage he used the second to last hill to get clear from the peloton and was unreachable for everybody. Alberto Contador takes the final stage and might even take the GC. He needs more than 1’32” excluding the boni seconds.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0091_zpshetuvpk0.jpg
De Los Campos holds on to 2nd place but is missed by the cameras’

Demare beats Hanzen and Ferrari for the final step on the podium while unofficial timing gives a gap of 1’00 exactly. Riblon might hold on to first place overall.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0092_zpsl0m3mdpv.jpg

Degenkolb, Martinez Machado, Ciolek, Favilli and Felline make up the rest of the top 10 while Riblon in 11th is given an official 49 seconds gap, meaning that he’ll hold on to the lead in the general classification. By 17 seconds. De las Campos finishes third in the GC due to his late attack.

Contador ran the GC really close here and a great victory for him.

Stromeon
Stage win goal achieved in perhaps the most unlikely fashion ever - Contador attacking on a flat stage :lol:

But seriously wow what a ride!! Shame that he couldn't wrest the GC from Riblon but nevertheless finishing 2nd probably justifies his presence here after a disappointing climb up the Green Mountain. With Langov finishing 4th, it's been a successful race for the team! Smile

Feunard attacks ( hoping for a stage win) and then the break gets caught early...

Contador attacks (hoping for someone to attack with him) and no one tries to follow him...

Owniak takes 45 points away from here and CCC had two second places Rolling Eyes

Phew, I already thought that Contador was going to take it, just the sprint trains saved us there.
But seriously where were all my riders when it came to chasing? Pfft
Anyway what a race that was for us. I initially wanted to get a Top 10 and eventually we got the GC, the Mountains jersey and a stage win, so I can't really complain Pfft
Thanks for the reports Luigi. Smile

Wow, bizarre. I've never seen anything like that on a flat stage before. Shock

At least we finally got that stage win and Damian did well. Stupid time bonuses, blatant doping, inactive EPIC riders and the strangest solo attack ever denying him the top 3. Pfft

Thanks for the reports Mario.

Pretty good race as a whole for Martinez Machado, quite a few good stage results, 5th in Points and a Top 20 GC is a good effort.

Hehe, great riding from De las Campos getting himself on the GC podium and winning the youth jersey. Smile

The Race

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/PCM0346_zpsy6rfdlqw.png
It's a rainy day here in Portugal, but that doesn't stop 4 riders from getting away early on. They are Myrvold, Schwarzmann, De Ieso and Krista Marcus.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/PCM0347_zpsnlwlgk1b.png
Surprisingly there isn't any contest for the sprints or KoM, where De Ieso is the most successful.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/PCM0351_zpszeasoaeh.png
With 7km to go the break has 20 seconds, and Myrvold goes for broke.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/PCM0352_zpsd5xknp32.png
With 3.5km left Mryvold still has 20", but the rest of the break is pretty much done for. Out of the sprinters, Boeckmans, Ferrari, Ista, Arndt, Sinkeldam and Cardoso are all in the mix.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/PCM0353_zpsinnlmx2l.png
The sprint starts with 2km left, with Sam Bennet and Francesco Gavazzi coming through on the left.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/PCM0354_zpss7wklqsb.png
Myrvold is finally brought back under the banner. Ferrari is in the best position, while Bennett is going at the fastest speed. Sinkeldam and Boeckmans seem to be the others worth watching.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/PCM0355_zpswgxzrd66.png
With 700m to go Ferrari is struggling to accelerate; as does Boeckmans. Bennett is still going well but did he go to early?

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/PCM0359_zpsct2lxahu.png
Looks like it, as Ferrari gets through just 200m out from the line. They're not catching him now!

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/PCM0360_zpsgkmwgrkd.png
Yep! Ferrari wins the first stage of the 2014 Volta ao Algarve for Lampre! We'll need a photo to decide second though.

i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag38/Abbiati123/Album%20For%20Albums/EPIC%20Races/PCM0361_zps0zleacjl.png
Looks like Boeckmans has just clinched it. Bennett still does pretty well for someone without a leadout.
