Welcome to this years GP Migel Indurain. Today a very strong field of puncheurs found their way to Spain. Most noteable are belgian champion Phillippe Gilbert and Joaguim Rodriguez who bring an almost equal amount of money to the bookmakers. Behind that we have Simon Gerrans and Damiano Cunego who are expected to do well. Also not to forget home team Tap - Michelin that brought with Zoltan, Costa and Freire a trio that can provide a good classification.
With 150 km to go we have three man just about two minutes in front, Aru (MAG), Bajadali (CSC) and Mondory (TUG)!
14 kilometres later Zeits (AXA) and Lloyd (CAT) bridged that gap from the peloton the gap almost reached four minutes.
Allianz, Pervyj, Lierse and TAP lead the chase in the pack.
The next kilometres nothing worth mention happens, with about 100 kilometres the break has the biggest lead which is 6'23. 55 kilometres to the finish hte break still three minutes in front and Paul Martens (NAC) takes the initaitive, he is followed by Mosquera (TCS) and Kruijswijk (TCW).
The trio quickly gains time and 15 kilometres later they bridge the gap to the break which is still 2'42 in front of the field with the favourites.
In 20 kilometres the eight in front lost two minutes and meanwhile it's Dario Cataldo (TUG) attacking the peloton.
His move doesn't seem to be successful and when he is just about to get reeled in there is another attack, that is by Horner (AXA) and Freire (TAP).
They don't manage to get a gap and Cataldo stays in front. Meanwhile around a minute ahead the young Italian Aru tries his last attempt and is successful for the moment.
His former break companions are back in the peloton when Rodriguez starts his first move. All the favourites try to follow.
Nobody can follow him. There are still 8,5 kilometres to go and he is already 37 seconds in front.
A non successful try to bridge the gap by Gerrans (CSC) and Cunego (BUL)!
But instead of the peloton decreasing the gap Rodriguez wins second by second. Now TAP even sends their best man, hungarian Jakab Zoltan, to the front.
Now it is clear that Rodriguez will win this race as he crosses the flamme rouge 47 seconds ahead of his concurrents.
The sprint for second place begins:
Cunego (BUL) -> Rebellin (TUG) -> Martin (BAR) -> Horner (AXA) -> Gerrans (CSC) -> Casar (TAP) -> Bakelants (LPU) -> Popovych (PER) -> Zoltan (TAP) -> Freire (TAP) -> Gilbert (LPU) -> Siutsou (PER) -> Nocentini (PER) -> Tiernan-Locke (AXA) -> Costa (TAP)
A deserved win for Rodriguez who even can take his time to cross the line!
Everything close in the peloton, Freire comes from the far left and Gilbert from the far right.
Ex-Worldchampion Freire gets second and Gilbert is lucky to get the last podium spot, but still for him and his team he is two places to far down.

I must say it's not very fun to report a race where 3 or so teams (the ones that didn't send a startlist in) are worse than my Custom Team... Can I next time either just leave these teams out or give them a little bit better squad? (Not very good but better than very bad) |
