Tour of Oman - Stage 5

After the surprising victory by Riblon yesterday he looks to have the GC in the back. However the organization managed to pull one more climb out of the bag and it will be repeated three times. The GC might not be as over as presumed on beforehand.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0069_zpshhwwtdvo.jpg

The usual breakaway were Damuseau (CCC), Velasco (EUS), Zardini (TNE), Berhane (MTN) and Petrov (TTS)

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0070_zpskwxznuoo.jpg

While ascending to the first intermediate sprint, Astana managed to break the peloton by pacing while BMC was on the second row. With the majority of the BMC team not being super on the climbs they lost contact and everybody behind them as well. Riblon was alert thought and was in the Astana Group.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0071_zpsn4wkefxw.jpg

We’ve made a full lap and are back at the intermediate sprint climb, Peraud (ALM) is the first to attack this time and Roche isn’t going to lose twice. Can Roche make up the 1’53” gap to Riblon. They have the breakaway in sight but with the downhill still to come they look to be able to decide for victory.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0072_zpsfpujsmvy.jpg

Roche are still together at the intermediate sprint and only De las Campos (EUS) is able to follow.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0073_zps9tu8wvx2.jpg

Meanwhile in the breakaway Velasco is going to try a solo victory. With Zardini not being able to get over the climbs it’s 3 against 1 in the breakaway.’

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0074_zpswhoj3c8d.jpg

This is how it currently looks

Breakaway (all together now) has a 1’13” minute advantage to Zardini who has a 1’16” advantage to Group Roche. The Main group is trailing Group Roche by 44 seconds and includes: Hanzen, Felline, Dillier, Owniak and Haga (BMC), Dumoulin and Riblon (ALM), Alarcon and Martinez Machado (CJR), Langov and Contador (TTS), Degenkolb and Ponzi (AST), Hintermuller (MTN), Acevedo (CSS) and Roy (FDJ).

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0075_zpstt1eum6c.jpg
the peloton as it looks right now.

With no climbs left in the race, Contador knows it’s now or never to win the GC, he easily closes the gap to the Roche group and is pulling Alarcon, Riblon, Roy, Owniak and Acevedo with him.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0076_zpsdncfq0ya.jpg

But none of that matters right now, the final sprint has started and Petrov was the first to launch. He’s also the first to be counted out for the win as it’s between Damuseau, Velasco and Berhane.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0077_zpsrj66llsx.jpg

Velasco is the next to drop out of the race for victory. His attempt to go solo might have ruined a beautiful stage win

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0078_zpso9c4tiok.jpg

Berhane and Damuseau are side by side

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0079_zpswmwlfmq5.jpg

it is Berhane however who is the strongest of the four and will take victory for MTN. Damuseau gives CCC a second 2nd place finish in this stage race. Velasco and Petrov will need to settle with
3rd and 4th

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0080_zps948wjznz.jpg

Zardini holds on to 5th before the main group that was brought back together by Contador. Roche and Degenkolb make up places 6th and 8th while Peraud and Dumoulin take 7th and 9th. De las Campos also finishes in the top 10 with 10th place.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0081_zpsryns4ha2.jpg

Nothing in the GC top 10 changes because the breakaway was so much behind that the time they got back was only enough to pull Berhane into 12th place overall. Tinkoff – Saxo takes the lead in the team classification.

Yes! Finally something to cheer for. First win of the season, goal as good as achieved. Thanks Luigi for selling Berhane Grin

I think I have an incentive to update my HQ again tomorrow Grin

Good racing here, almost makes me feel sorry I didn't send a team to Oman.

I was very confused why there was such a major split, then it became clear narrow roads played their fair role Wink

Luckily the AI compensated to bring things back together. Roy defends his GC position so our Goal looks very set now. Also a good recovery to finish 11th on the stage, way ahead of what i expect from him... if only there was a TT.

Hanzen, and BMC, recovered well after the split. He's having a strong if not completely remarkable race.

You gotta be kidding me, this was the chance to get my first stage win :/ Sad to see Nokkvason losing so much time :/

Owniak looses a Podium to time bonus, but glad that he kept on fighting Smile Thanks for the report Wink

Fantastic team performance, supporting both Damian and Adrien really well. 5 guys in the top 25 is pretty good. No big points coming our way unfortunately, but after the start to the season we've had, it's good to see the team actually working.

Acevedo securing his Top10 spot is nice, though I don't really believe in our stage win goal anymore. I'm wondering why Kakhi isn't pulling anything off, probably I guessed the MO-HI ratio wrong...

Good News: It's the first stage of the race in which we don't miss out on the top 10 slightly.
Bad News: We didn't finish in the top 10 either.

Thanks for the report Luigi, allthough I don't have anything to cheer for here with 0 scored points and a missed goal.

Zardini getting some points is a welcome sight, although it'd been better if had stayed with the group but whatsoever.

Well done by the Euskaltel boys. Velasco would have had ahard time winnign the sorint anyway I think so it's good that he tried and still got a podium.

Sad though that Nokvasson was caught behind Sad

Thanks for a set of quality reports in a good pace.

Too bad Contador did not allow the Roche group to stay away. Still, it is good to see De las Campos try. Smile

What the hell was Peraud doing there? Pfft
Luckily Riblon manged to defend his lead, despite the fact that even his own teammates were attacking him. This is more and more looking like an unexpected points haul Smile
