Nice 3rd place by Fuglsang! He showed he's a real stage racer, like Evans and Contador: Strong in the mountains and strong in the time trial!
(Sorry Andy, you can't time trial)

Thanks a 1000 times guys! One for each reply in this thread!
Reaching that motivated me to give you the MSR preview now, with the report tomorrow morning! Here you go!
The Milano - San Remo is the first of the five monuments on the cycling calendar. La Primavera has historically been a race for the sprinters, but the punchers has started to take over a bit in the recent editions. Most successful rider in the history of the race is Eddy Merckx, with 7 victories, while the last Italian winner was Filippo Pozzato in 2006.

Johan Vansummeren's attack just before the Poggio spoiled the party for the sprinters, with the Belgian sneaking away together with Fabian Cancellara and Juan Antonio Flecha. The latter then outgunned his two companions for victory. Geschke in 5th and Van Hummel in 7th also made it a great day for us.
The course:
Not much of a difference from other years. The major climbs on the route are the Turchino, Le Manie, the Capos, Cipressa and finally the famous Poggio di San Remo. They're all small and short, but they're all brutal on a day with 300 kilometres in the saddle. Mass sprint or late attack? That's the eternal question.
Project squad:
We'll be prepared for any type of race. In a harder race with the punchers being favoured, we'll have a Fuglsang in top shape, who hopefully will stay near the front. And for an easier race and a mass sprint, we've also got another option in either Bozic or Kluge. A Top 10 should definitely be achievable.

OPQS will be the team to beat here, with Gert Steegmans and Philippe Gilbert being the two biggest favourites. The main sprinter challengers are British champion Mark Cavendish, last year's real life winenr Matthew Goss and recent Tirreno stage winner Daniele Bennati. To name a few punchers, we've got names such as Tirreno champion Cadel Evans, Joaquim Rodriguez and Andy Schleck, although the latter is unlikely to do anything at all. Also deserving a mention is defending champion, Juan Antonio Flecha.

MSR should be a great race for Project! I wouldn't be suprised if Boziz or Fuglsang won it, but I don't care as long as it's not Cavendish.
I'm guessing Cancellara or Greipel. BTW What are Steegman's sprint stats?

I hope so, but a victory will be incredibly hard.
Cancellara would definitely be a good bet, but I'm unsure about whether Greipel can survive the hills or not. We'll just have to wait and see.
For Steegmans' stats, look here.

If I were you I would set a high pace with Boom and Posthuma, and finish it off with Bozic!

Nice 3rd with Fuglsang! Good luck in MSR, OPQS looks hard to beat, but I'm sure you can challenge them, knowing your PCM-knowledge.

Thanks for the good luck wishes!
After a hundred kilometres without a breakaway, a group finally created a decent gap. Some really strong names among the thirteen riders, with Franco Pellizotti, Rein Taaramae or Spanish champion Joaquim Rodriguez being the most prominent. Also of course one of our riders in there, in the shape of Thierry Hupond.
They steadily increased their advantage during the next kilometres, stretching it out to just over seven minutes at the top of the Turchino. Rodriguez and Rein Taaramae had so far been the most active in the group, doing more work than anyone else in there.
Back in the peloton nothing important happened until one of the pre-race favourites, Cadel Evans somehow managed to hit the ground going up (!) Le Manie. Luckily no one else went down with him.
The crash did affect the race though, as it created a quite big split in the middle of the field. About 80 riders made it through, while the rest got caught two minutes behind and never made it back. One of those left behind was unfortunately Joost Posthuma.
The fun then started as rolled down on the flat just before the Cipressa. Sep Vanmarcke was the one kicking off the attacks, directly joined by Fabian Cancellara and Björn Leukemans.
Leukemans then jumped around the other two, creating a decent gap up the Cipressa. Vanmarcke and Cancellara around twenty seconds behind, with the peloton not far away either.
Let's not forget the front however. Rodriguez was now solo after bursting up the Cipressa, leading the closest follower, Taaramae, by approximately half a minute, and the main field by almost three minutes!
Down on the big road towards the Poggio, Cancellara had bridged across to Leukemans, Pellizotti and Antonio D'Aniello. The four of them immediately started to cooperate, in order to hunt down the Spanish champion at the front. Peloton about half a minute behind these.
Speaking of the Spanish champion, here he is, starting the Poggio with a, still, very good buffer over the four chasers, and an even bigger one over the pack. But a big question in whether he has much green bar left.
With five men in front of the peloton, we decided to throw our joker, Lars Boom, in pursuit after them at the first metres of the Poggio. A great opportunity was slipping away here, with both Boom and Bozic having a top day today (+5).
But maybe it was already too late! Rodriguez passed under the five-kilometres-to-go-banner with a lead of one and a half minute! Unless his green bar was completely empty, more than enough to hold on!
Closest chase was still the group with Cancellara, Leukemans and Vanmarcke, now also including Boom. Also these had a pretty good advantage over the peloton.
Back in the main field, we launched Kluge early, in one last, desperate try to bring it all back for Bozic. Not a lot of sprinters near the front end of the main field, but instead many strong punchers.
But it was far too late. Joaquim Rodriguez was already at the finish, with plenty of time to celebrate a very unexpected victory. A very deserved win after a long day of hard racing. Impressive show!
Another surprise today, Vanmarcke, won the sprint for second, ahead of Leukemans, an empty Boom and Cancellara. All of these, apart from the latter, must be satisfied.
A few seconds later, Bozic easily took the mass sprint for a minot 6th place. Kessler, Scheirlinckx, Visconti and Steegmans completed the Top 10 in this spectacular monument. A good day for us too, as we improved our two Top 10 spots by one on both, from last year's 5th and 7th!

Strong results in Paris Nice and Tirreno Adriatico. Very well done.
Also Milan San Remo was great although not enough to win it but two in the top 10 similar to last season is great.
You are already dominating a lot. Great report. |

You won the peloton sprint, if its any consolation, and Boom got a great result in the break.
I also love seeing the Caisse jerseys so much. I dont care if its copying, I think I'm bringing them back for David's story

Great result. Team Project (sounds weird to call it like this ) continue their regularity in the first months of racing... And am I the only one who thinks the Caisse jerseys aren't something special? |
