Giro d'Italia - Stage 8 - GT

i.imgur.com/Mr2YxN5.jpg

Molfetta - Peschici 189.5kms

Another similar stage to a couple days ago, a fairly flat profile with a couple small climbs before the finish and a hilly final few kilometres. Another chance for Chaves to maybe steal some time, or grab a stage win. Could be a day for the breakaway however, so the team have told me to try and hop into the front group. Exciting!

Race Report

As promised, I made my way into the breakaway. There were 8 of us up front, and no one was a threat for the pink jersey, so we were praying we'd be let go. Unfortunately however that wasn't the case, with FDJ not letting us get more than 3 or so minutes.

i.imgur.com/7mfGtW7.jpg
The 8-man break weren't given a lot of space today

6 of us were left as we passed over the top of the Monte Sant'Angelo. The peloton weren't far behind, and we'd be caught soon enough sadly. It was fun to be out in front, but it wasn't to be.

i.imgur.com/Nd6NBIw.jpg
The break's final hurrah atop Monte Sant'Angelo

As we were caught, the peloton rolled towards the final few crucial kilometres. The road began to shoot uphill, and position was everything. Roman was protecting Esteban as always, with Tom Dumoulin looking very comfortable right next to them.

i.imgur.com/zffUdeS.jpg
Nerves are high as the gradients rise

And once again, Esteban Chaves shoots off the front! He won't stop trying, and causes some serious trouble. Ben Swift was working for Diego Ulissi, while Sergio Henao & Tom Dumoulin were forced to chase alone.

i.imgur.com/pqjQA6y.jpg
Chaves tries to distance himself from the rest

As they got to the final kilometre, Esteban was caught, and the final sprint was on. A group of 20 was at the front and there would be no more gaps between the big favourites. After working hard for his leader earlier, Roman was in good position and actually led the peloton.

i.imgur.com/QXOwNfW.jpg
The final ascent to the line

Another burst of speed from Chaves had him in the lead as the line inched closer! However the famously quick Diego Ulissi was on his tail, and it looked like his race to lose. Kreuziger, Kangert & Dumoulin were just behind.

i.imgur.com/vLC3bUo.jpg
Diego Ulissi in prime position

But no! Chaves & Ulissi fade, as Kangert & Dumoulin battle it out for the win! And the pink jersey takes it, his second stage win so far! He adds 10" to his lead over Chaves, and Kangert continues his terrific form to close in on the podium.

i.imgur.com/BOm2neT.jpg
Win #2 for Tom Dumoulin

There was one major victim today, with Bob Jungels falling on a downhill just before a crucial uphill section. He lost 1'37" today and falls to 9th overall.

Another day, another attack from Esteban! We came here with an attacking attitude and he's showing that in spades. Unfortunately no time gained but another good try.

I was happy with my performance today. I worked hard in the break all day, and then even after being caught I finished in the second group only a minute behind. I'll definitely be taking it easy tomorrow however with a big climb awaiting us, and then the time-trial the next day.

See you then,
Alex

Giro d'Italia - Stage 9 - GT

i.imgur.com/Gkb5qbe.jpg

Montenero di Bisaccia - Blockhaus 148kms

Today is simple, 120 or so kms of flat riding before we reach the Passo Lanciano, or Blockhaus, a brutal 26km Appenine climb that gets steeper as it goes on. It's a true climbers day, and another chance for Esteban to steal some time on Dumoulin. I think after today we'll know who the real contenders for overall are. I'm just gonna take it easy, prepping for the big time-trial tomorrow.

Race Report

As we have vowed to be more present in the breakaways into the final 2 thirds of the Giro, we sent Simon Gerrans into the day's break. While we haven't marked today specifically as one for the breakaway, it as a good opportunity for Simon to check his legs and get into some more competitive racing.

The break, led by Gerrans, John Darwin Atapuma (Trek-Segafredo) & Julen Amezqueta (Wilier Triestina), gained over 6 mintues on the peloton into the final half of the race, and near the base of the climb their lead was at around 4 minutes. If they can hold on over the Blockhaus, today could be the first breakaway win of the Giro.

i.imgur.com/H7rNtmE.jpg
The 6 riders on a short climb before the Blockhaus

As we hit the first slopes of the climb, an early attack came from Rigoberto Urán (Cannondale-Drapac). At 4'15" behind the maglia rosa, he would need a lot of time to get back in the hunt for a podium spot.

i.imgur.com/fQB7ad9.jpg
As the climb starts, Urán rides away

The peloton was looking nervous, waiting to see who would respond. Sensing that Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb) was slightly out of position, Esteban Chaves attacks! Henao (Sky), Kruijswijk (LottoNL-Jumbo), Nibali (Bahrain-Merida), König (Bora-Hansgrohe) & Kreuziger all try to follow.

The pace in the peloton was too fast for the breakaway to hold off, and with 20kms left they would be caught.

i.imgur.com/HrwZgJg.jpg
Chaves leads the attackers up the Blockhaus

Soon Henao had bridged the gap to Uran, while Chaves was leading the chase. Some breakaway riders tried to hold his wheel but couldn't stand his fast pace. He would soon catch up the front 2 riders as they would ride on ahead of the rest of the pink jersey group.

i.imgur.com/4x0Aiq6.jpg
3 Colombians lead the race up the Blockhaus

And back in the peloton, Thibaut Pinot attacks, and Tom Dumoulin thinks now is the time to catch up to the front 3. He could feel the maglia rosa slipping from his grasp, and would need to catch Chaves soon. The two work together to try and bridge the gap.

i.imgur.com/UMAWQA0.jpg
Dumoulin & Pinot on the chase

And as the two followers try to catch the front 3, Chaves decided to push the pace once again. It was too much for his countrymen, and gaps began to form as he rode alone up the road.

i.imgur.com/9Pwl9KV.jpg
Esteban puts the pedal down

Into the final 2 kilometres, and Uran had joined Pinot & Dumoulin in the chase. Chaves was still up ahead, and although he had seemingly hit the wall, was doing everything he could to will himself to the line.

i.imgur.com/x4ztQZE.jpg
The Frenchman Pinot looking strong

And Dumoulin has cracked! Pinot's acceleration was too much, and now he has Chaves in his sights! Less than a kilometre left, how much time would Dumoulin lose?

i.imgur.com/pOAhGy1.jpg
The pink jersey begins to lose ground

Soon Pinot passes Chaves, and rides over the line in 1st place! A great ride from the Frenchman. He gains 21" on Chaves, while Dumoulin comes back... 25" after Chaves! Enough to put El Chavito into pink!

i.imgur.com/LpmkFp3.jpg
Thibaut Pinot victorious atop the Blockhaus!

Behind the race, Tanel Kangert (Astana) & Steven Kruijswijk were the next best, coming in just 27" after Dumoulin. Very impressive from Kangert especially, with the Estonian continuing his career-best form.

Chavito's in pink! He's riding spectacularly at the moment, very exciting signs for the rest of the race. We all get a hard-earned rest day now, I'm looking forward to a leisurely day tomorrow, then onto what will be a vital time trial.

See you in a couple days,
Alex

Giro d'Italia - Stage 10 - GT

i.imgur.com/BYDYCL8.jpg

Foligno - Montefalco 39.2kms

After a day's rest, we're back to racing. And it's the time-trial, just under 40 kilometres on an undulating route to Montefalco. Although no proper classified climbs, it's far from pan flat, with the final couple kilometres shooting uphill around 4% average. This suits Esteban more than a traditional time-trial, however with Dumoulin in such great form he could very likely lose pink after today.

As you know I love racing against the clock, and this is my first time-trial in top fitness this season, so will be cool to see how I go on a tough course.

Race Report

One of the first few riders out the gate was our own Michael Hepburn, and he shone, setting what would be the fastest time for quite a while. I followed him in the team car with Esteban to get a look at the course, and we were both raring to go.

i.imgur.com/pdaBCTx.jpg
Former Aussie champ Michael Hepburn setting an early benchmark

I hit the course about an hour later, and Michael was down to 5th place provisionally, with our countryman Rohan Dennis atop the times. I loved my ride, and about halfway saw a Bora - Hangsrohe rider in the distance. I chased him hard and right on the finish I overtook him, finishing just 2" behind Hepburn. I didn't expect such a good time, and was very happy, albeit tired, as I rolled over the line.

i.imgur.com/HSDle2m.jpg
Alex Edmondson passing Patrick Konrad over the line

As the final 10 riders were about to take off, Leopold König had set a blistering best time, almost 1'20" faster than Rohan Dennis. The Czech champion looks good for a stage win, but will have to hold off the GC contenders, namely Tom Dumoulin.

i.imgur.com/0VpKNxG.jpg
Leopold König battling away for a top-10 overall

As we flew through the final 10, we had some great times. Tanel Kangert continued his assault for the podium, just 20" slower than König, with Pinot & Uran the only other two contenders to best the Estonian. This was all before Tom Dumoulin set off however, and as he passed the first checkpoint it was becoming clear he was the strongest of the bunch. He ripped through the course and knocked off Konig & Pinot to take the best time by nearly a minute. He was flocked by media as he rolled over the line, as it looked like Pink would be his soon enough.

i.imgur.com/1gmBTlI.jpg
The big Dutchman blows the rest out of the water

With the pink across his shoulders, Esteban Chaves rolled down the ramp. Not his favourite discipline, the two long time-trials in the Giro were always going to be a problem for Esteban. Despite riding well over expectations and coming in 12th on the stage, Chavito lost over 2 minutes to Dumoulin, losing Pink and down to 3rd overall.

Well no huge surprises here. We expected to lose pink, but Esteban did better than we thought he would. The DS was very happy with Michael & my rides today, as well as Roman who looks good in 12th overall. Tom Dumoulin & Thibaut Pinot are clearly the riders to beat, and the rest of this Giro is looking very exciting.

See you tomorrow,
Alex

Giro d'Italia - Stage 11 - GT

i.imgur.com/dHYCUXq.jpg

Firenze (Ponte a Ema) - Bagno di Romagna 160kms

A hilly profile with four categorised climbs, possibly one for the breakaway today. The final 10kms of the final climb, Monte Fumaiolo, has a very steep finish, so could lead to some attacks. We need to take every chance we can to gain on Dumoulin so Chaves will certainly have a crack.

Race Report

A strong break struggled to form early on in the race, and over the second climb of the day Alexis Gouegard (AG2R) took max points ahead of David De La Cruz (Quick-Step). The peloton weren't far behind though, and it seemed today wasn't a day for the break.

i.imgur.com/rtfObnx.jpg
Gouegard making his case for the KoM jersey

The first exciting move of the day came from Cannondale, who sent Dylan Van Baarle out in front, with 10th overall Rigoberto Urán soon following. The pair worked hard to get a gap, which led to some strong selection in the peloton as they tried to catch up.

i.imgur.com/GGxJUPX.jpg
Cannondale with an exciting move!

Eventually on the downhill, thanks to some work from Bahrain-Merida, we caught Urán. As we shot uphill once again towards the final climb, we sent Simon Gerrans to work his hardest on the front. He didn't have much left from all the climbing but did his best. Esteban & Roman were looking comfortable near the front.

i.imgur.com/7oe215o.jpg
Simon Gerrans leads the 35-man peloton

Once Simon emptied his tank, Roman hit the front. At this point the rest of the GC riders knew we were planning an attack, and positioned themselves accordingly. As the pace lifted, riders were falling off left and right. And as the peloton was in limbo, Roman fell off to the side and Esteban sped off the front. And straight away on his wheel, who else but Tom Dumoulin.

i.imgur.com/AkFiZ8A.jpg
Chaves attacks, again!

Chaves' attack minimised the group to around 12 riders, and as they neared the top Chaves, Dumoulin & Pinot began to create some space on the rest. They were clearly the strongest climbers here, and barring a crash, would certainly be the final 3 on the podium in Milan. Their lead was around 45", would they hold on to the finish?

i.imgur.com/StvMtwt.jpg
The 3 best riders together again

Thanks to a strong chase from Vincenzo Nibali & Tanel Kangert, a 9-man group of followers caught up to the front 3 on the downhill. And as they got together again, attacks came. Urán & Mikel Landa were the first to go, and Chaves followed. The only riders to really struggle to follow were Kruijswijk, Brambilla & König, with Henao & Kreuziger further behind.

i.imgur.com/MmBph5n.jpg
Those remaining desperate to create the winning gap

9 riders were together towards the line, and it seemed a sprint of non-sprinters awaited us. Ulissi looks the favourite, but after a long day like today, all form goes out the window, it's simply about who has the strongest legs.

i.imgur.com/z7cXzw2.jpg
The front 9 speed toward the finish line

And Vincenzo Nibali takes it! He just inched past Mikel Landa & Rigoberto Urán. There would be no gaps today in the top-5, however a few things shaken up behind them.

A home victory for the Shark!
