sutty68 - Yeah it was pretty close in the end. But he made it!
Selwink - I think so, too. We'll struggle at times but with Colbrelli and Fontana fit (they've been ill al through the season on and off) and the newcomers we should have a good squad. Wonder what Antonio will bring to that squad, though. Seems unlikely he'll win a consecutive San Remo but then again it's Antonio
Tamijo - Impressive. Yeah Antonio with a lighter race schedule means he's quite fit at this point late in the season! |

Wow, an amazing month for Antonio Seems he's a strong and smart racer - TT, flat and hills sorted now - try cobbles next year to complete my prediction of next Spartacus Where is he in continental rankings btw - next year he could do really well! Agree that smaller program helped out too but still super talent!
Excited for trittico lombardia - hope he can get some good home results!

11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

Hey!
It's a bit odd but the Trittico Lombardia is a bit pulled apart. We've just had Agostoni and Bernocchi. MY home race in Varese will be raced a bit later this year, after the World Championships.
Coppa Agostoni / Coppa Bernocchi
Right before the race I received the wonderful race that I'm guaranteed to ride in the World Championships Time Trial. I've got these two races to also qualify myself for the road race, which would be incredible!
Especially since we decided to go for World Tour promotion after all, we were eager to show our strength. In both races, Cattelan was a prominent team with a deep depth of riders.
Colbrelli will definitely be a leader in the upcoming World Championships, since he's on some amazing late-season form. He took the win in Agostoni after a late, powerful attack. I finished 6th myself, which is definitely good news!
In Bernocchi I myself did 10 places worse, still a creditable 16th spot. But Colbrelli proved he can finish any way he can. Late attack or demolishing sprint, it doesn't matter. The competition wasn't even close here!
Coppa Agostoni 1 | Sonny Colbrelli | Cattelan Italia | 5h02'41 | 2 | Diego Ulissi | Lampre-Merida | + 43 | 3 | Mikel Landa | Astana Pro Team | s.t. | 4 | Giampaolo Caruso | Team Katusha | + 1'10 | 5 | Alessandro De Marchi | Cattelan Italia | s.t. | 6 | Antonio Andolini | Cattelan Italia | s.t. | 7 | Jan Barta | Cattelan Italia | + 1'44 | 8 | Alexis Vuillermoz | Ag2r La Mondiale | s.t. | 9 | Jarlinson Pantano | IAM Cycling | s.t. | 10 | Fabio Aru | Astana Pro Team | s.t. | 11 | Adam Yates | Orica-GreenEDGE | s.t. | 12 | Alexey Lutsenko | Astana Pro Team | s.t. | 13 | Hubert Dupont | Ag2r La Mondiale | s.t. | 14 | Gianfranco Zilioli | Androni Giocattoli - Venezuela | s.t. | 15 | Laurens De Plus | Cattelan Italia | s.t. | 16 | Nathan Haas | Team Cannondale - Garmin | s.t. | 17 | Leopold König | Team Sky | s.t. | 18 | Alexandr Kolobnev | Team Katusha | s.t. | 19 | Peter Kennaugh | Team Sky | s.t. | 20 | Franco Pellizotti | Androni Giocattoli - Venezuela | s.t. |

And so we head towards the World Championships. My next race is the Individual Time Trial. I can't wait!
Colbrelli's form and my own result are really good news. Colbrelli might just be Italy's leader. My own form and the fact that I'm Colbrelli's team mate only plays into my hands. I might just make the start in the USA for my first World Championships road race, too!
See you in the US!
Ciao

Hello
In the United States. Today our team participates in Tre Valli Varesine. Obviously I won't be able to make it. I was at the WC yesterday, riding for Italy. With my home race only a day later and on a different continent, I opted to ride the WC rather than the Tre Valli, no matter how badly I wanted to be there.
How did my first Worlds go? Well, read it here!
World Championships - Individual Time Trial
Pre-Race
Not sure what to expect. I've trained a lot on the time trial bike this season and I've won a time trial in the Tour of Britain. Just ride as hard as I can and I'll end up on the right spot.
The Race
I had good legs and I kept a steady pace all throughout the race. Finishing, I was a provisional second, behind Castroviejo.
As the race progressed, it was actually looking as if I'd finish in the top 10. I was praying hard. The fight for the win was incredibly close, just one second separating the two titans over a course of over 50 km, amazing!
I did very well myself, as did Malori. We finished 7th and 5th respectively. For me, this is a result I can take to the future and hope for more one day!

World Championships - Road Race
Pre-Race
It's amazing to be at the start line here. I want to support our multi-strong squad. There's Oss, Colbrelli, Paolini, Pozzato. Italy has no clear leader here, but a lot of capable men. Myself included. The distance shouldn't be an issue, as San Remo is the longest race on the calendar and I've won it! After the time trial, I'm more than anxious to test my legs here!
The Race
The atmosphere was fantastic. A lot of fans showed up for this WC in the USA.
But there wasn't any time to enjoy it. This race was one of those races people'll still talk about in decades. It was a war, from start to finish, not a moment's rest. After 30 km, half the peloton was already out of the race, it's unbelievable. What a start of the race, full throttle from the word go!
Unfortunately for us, more than half our team was already out of the running. Oss, Paolini, Colbrelli. It was a disaster.
After a futile chase of 50 km, they knew how it was. Race over before it even started.
But the Belgians weren't happy. They needed to drop the sprinters and the fast man like Démare, Degenkolb... They kept the race a complete hell, together with some other nations every now and then. With 77 km to go, the peloton was only 35 men large. Me and Pozzato were the only Italians present.
And still it wasn't good enough. I kept my nose out of the wind and was surprised to still be within the peloton. We were going towards the finale and I hadn't been dropped yet. On the other hand, it had been such a devastating race already that it was hard to believe the finale was only coming. 35 km to go. Only 25 people left.
Some groups attacked, others were dropped. It was a carnage. I kept my nose out of the wind and went from wheel to wheel. Unfortunately, the pace was too high and with only 15 km left, I was left behind!
Greg Van Avemaet finished off the team work from Belgium with an amazing victory. A game well played from a nation, behind a strong leader. Bravo.
As for me, without really showing myself, I finished 9th, inside the top 10! It had taken so much energy I actually collapsed after finishing, but I couldn't believe my eyes. This is a great result for me, I really achieved the impossible today. In a madhouse race, I survived!

Ciao

Great racing, total carnage and an excellent result for Tony!
I think I'll just have a guess at his stats after the season and you can tell me if I'm close or not?
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Il Lombardia
Pre-Race
Very happy to be back in Italy after an amazing World Championship campaign for me. I'm really making a name for myself in the cycling peloton and I think I've had one of the best debut seasons in history. Of course, I have my history as a track rider, so I didn't start from scratch (pun intented).
I have a few more races to make my debut season even better and the first is in one of my absolute favorite races (if not my absolute favorite!), Il Lombardia. The race of the falling leaves. Coppi's masterpiece. There's a lot of climbing involved so it'll be tough to hang on until the end. But I've grown a lot this season and I want to see where I can finish. I have nothing to lose, ever since I won San Remo my season had been a huge success already. I can only add to that.
The Race
It was a nice weather to ride in. I stayed near the end of the pack in the beginning of the race, taking it easy.
The climbs here are really big and I quickly found that I was in trouble. As I wanted to move up the pack, I discovered I really couldn't. The pace was high enough as it was.
A group of about 30 riders got caught behind. I was among them. Things were getting a bit more nervous as we tried to catch up with the peloton before the next big climb. We were making fast pace on the downhill and the flat. And then...
I don't quite remember exactly what happened. Someone went down and then things escalated very quickly.
The team manager said I lost consciousness for about a minute and that it looked very scary. I don't remember, which makes sense.
In the fight for the victory, Astana couldn't play out their numeral adventage. Instead, Porte beat Wellens by a mere inch.

I had to spend a night in the hospital, checking up for head injuries. Luckily, I should be just fine. My season is over, though, I won't get back on the bike competitively until the start of next season. It's a shame to have to end my neopro season like this, but it could've been a lot worse.
Before I finish the season and go on winter break (from this blog), I'll write up one more post. And then it's on to 2016, with a WT Cattelan Italia!
Ciao
Antonio |

Bad luck, but after a season like this and no serious damage from the crash, can only be satisfied and look forward to 2016 with optimism.

DiCyc - Let's hope so
Tamijo - Exactly. A good off-season hopefully and then a good program for Antonio!
Anyone else experiencing some problems with Photobucket? Will delay report until photobucket accepts the screenshots... |

Thanks, sutty
Photobucket has finally worked and I've been able to upload my screenshots. So expect the last post of the season within the next 48 hours I guess and then we're off to season 2!
By the way, always open to suggestions/critisicm. If there are things you don't like or whatever, feel free to tell me! |

A bit unfortunate in the season ending there. The mountains may just be a bit too hard then. Next year should already be a better season ending (the early season may be harder to match)
