Well considering how little money there is in cycling, you'd want to monopolize it too if you run it

So... no Criterium International in 2017...

Interesting that article sites the reason as a lack of interested teams. I've read in other places that it's cancelled because nowhere wanted to host it. Corsica agreed to host the race from 2010 to show ASO they could handle a Tour stage. Now that's done Corsica didn't want to host it anymore, and no-one else wants to take over.

As much as the Crit Int has been a sort of decent race it's not classic. It's been nomadic for most of its existence and has not exactly been relevant in quite a number of years. Just being another early season stage race that teams attend to placate ASO.

Honestly i don't care if it's gone. Never paid attention to it. Never heard anyone going on about it as something special. It as just another race in March, and there's plenty of those.

Gent-Wevelgem decides to follow Schaal Sels & Dwars door het Hageland and adds 3 offroad sections in between the Kemmelberg climbs.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Disagree with you there. It had a nice history and teams did send couple of decent guys there.

It might not be all Tier 1 riders but it was a nice mix of teams/riders and in especially a very good chance for 2nd tier riders to show themselves as last year for example Oomen or Craddock.

The mountain finish there was always one of the best stages all year for me.

Fully agree with roturn here, for me, CI is one of the most interesting races in the whole calendar. Nice unusual format and composition of stages and usual great riding at Col de l'Ospedale in last stage.

Names of the former winners also tells the story about its decent importance and attaractivity for teams and riders...

Jacques Anquetil
Sean Kelly
Bernard Hinault
Miguel Indurain
Stephen Roche,
Joop Zoetemelk
Laurent Fignon
Jens Voigt
Cadel Evans
Chris Froome

Olano, Basso, Schleck, Peraud, Pinot,...
I'll be back

Now thats interesting! More races like this, please. Hageland was insane, I loved that urban, almost cyclocross racing.

When I first started watching cycling Criterium International was one of the first races I ever heard about and soon discovered that it was a prestigious race that the big riders wanted to win, kind of like a super mini Tour de France crammed into a couple of days.

Sadly though over the years the bigger names stayed away from it until it just became another French race, a sad end really for this race.

The UCI has anounced the team licences for 2017 season.

For now, TJ Sports (former Lampre) status as WT team is still under review. Bora, Barhain and DD has been confirmed as WT team for 2 years, as the rest of the 2016 WT team

ASO, RCS Sport and Flanders Classics made a big decision for next year: 8 riders in GTs, 7 in the classics.

Interesting...
Now will we see an increase in Wildcard spaces? This could be great news for some PCT teams, and actually would have been great if the WT was cut as it would make it more likely to get a wildcard and placate sponsors. Oh well.

So we've got more inconsistency in the WT though. With some races being 6 riders, some being 7 and some being 8. And for the non-WT races, is it now 6-7 or is it only 7?
Don't think i'm complaining. I like the change, it would just be good to have parity across the races at the top level

No more teams, just smaller pelotons to increase the safety.

That was an awesome one indeed.

And the 8 riders for GTs and 7 for classics rule is great.

About CI:It is a shame that Charleville-Mezieres and the other places don't want to host it.

If they want to host the race in Cevennes monutains they can make a criterium sprint stage and short ITT around Montpellier and then climb Lusette at stage 3 to finish in Mont Aigoual or Le Vigan or climb Col du Pre de la Dame from Genolhac side and finishin Villefort or climb it from Villefort side and finish in Genolhac.

This decision will help the teams to deal with the increase of races in World Tour.

Also, I think that for the Ardennes classics the number of riders by team should be 6. Recently, they have been a boredom-fest. The've become a 10-minute-race to watch

Smaller pelotons = less team-mates = 1 sky domestique out of the sky-train!

Makes sense!

Great decision to lower the number of riders per team. Still it would be more ideal to take that number even lower. 8 in a GT is ok. 7 would be ok in stage races. 6 would be perfect for classics. In all races the same system, maybe we will get there in a few years. Smaller teams = less chances to totally control the race. Even with this change it could potentially allow to involve more teams in races - and that could be great to raise up the level of cycling in some smaller cycling countries, if they have a realistic chance to potentially get an invite to the biggest races more easily. It also helps with WT getting bigger and bigger. Nice change.

Chris Froome has failed to make the shortlist for the BBCs British Sports Personality of the Year. I know it's Olympic year but the guy has just won the Tour for a third time, he should at least be shortlisted even if he won't win this year. Can't believe he hasn't won it at all yet, or even made the top 3.

The Kenny's have both been nominated.

Andy Murray will win it again because basically the whole of Scotland will vote for him. Gareth Bale will finish second because Wales will vote for him.

(Cue about ten comments saying "Chris Froome doesn't have a personality Smile )

Wiggins and Cavendish won it two years in a row in 2011 & 2012. There is your counter answer.
