Between Guarnieri and Mezgec? No more than half a wheel at most if we're being generous, so sure not quite as close as it looked in real-time granted. Modolo was about a wheel behind Guarnieri for fourth.

As I predicted BMC tried a solo attack again
Not effective though, it also shows two things: how much speed Hushovd lost in the last years and how much stronger is the sprinters field this year here - last year he got 2 stage wins while Von Hoff claimed 2 podiums IIRC - this year they are nowhere close to top 5 of sprints.

Why did Bos end up 17th today? Didn't watch today... Inconsistent as fuck. Does not deserve a new contract imo. |

Finally the GC fight is on.
Stage 5: Zakopane - Strbskie Pleso - 190km
Staged in the Tatras, at the footstep of Poland's highest mountain (Rysy) this is the longest climb in this years tour and perhaps the most awaited. Believe it or not, this is the first time TdP finishes in a neighbouring country. And for both Slovakia and Poland sake I hope this stage will provide differences and be reused - after all this is one of the most demanding routes Poland and neighbours can provide.
Strbskie Pleso may not be as steep as Gliczarów (avg 5% with 16% max vs 6% with max 22%), but it's definitely longer and less punchy. The climb taken on the 1st & 2nd time is about 8km long and 1km longer on the final round. The steepest section comes about 200 metres to the finish, so Purito-like final km attack is most likely to happen. And even if the differences will be small, usually that's all you need to win TdP.
Altimetry for the 2x25,4 km round
And for the 3 final km
All eyes are on Majka, who grew in confidence after Le Tour. Question is can he live up to expectations. After all it's been 10 years since last Polish stage victory on TdP (Marek Rutkiewicz in 2004 Karpacz holding the honours). And 11 years since last GC triumph (Zamana in 2003). All of them before World Tour era.

Farrar should just abandon now and head to Eneco.
RIP Exxon Duke, David Veilleux, Double Feature, and Monster Energy

Long shot: Matthews Montecassino style. Wouldn't that be hilarious?

Hesjedal seemed to be strong on low gradient climbs during the Giro. I wonder if he is in form to do anything here. |

Last stage was short. Has lots of raw power.
Today's stage was kind of long. He works very similar to having a poor stamina stat in PCM.

Big thanks to jdog for making this AMAZING userbar!

More than two minutes of advantage now. It doesn't look like a move for a stage win, there is no strong climber or puncheur in it.

@Cossack: isn't Paterski a strong puncheur? |

Yes, quite, he has won this year's Tour of Norway with some well timed attacks.
EDIT - looks like he's trying to get mountain jersey

Wasnt this finish suposed to be BRUTAL according to some people here??? What a waste of time, no doubt this is the most boring World Tour stage race this year.
It's not steep at all but shouldn't be a surprise that Avin is overrating something Slovakian. I'd expect Vakoc to hold on.
Edit: fickman deletes his post

Look at the map. 75% of the stage is in Slovakia. There's no rounds around Zakopane.
and I was refering to this post

Well from the profile it looks easy. 4-5% is not much at all. So Matthews can make it. |
