Second 2014 Signing!
On behalf of the Androni Management I am very pleased to announce the signing of Krista Marcus.
Krista is an 18 year old Time Trialist from the large nation of Australia which is a long way from Europe. She dominated youth cycling throughout Australia, yes you heard right, she. We are very proud to announce that Krista is the first female cyclist to ride professionally in the world of EPIC. Our partnership with her allows her to be the first female cyclist to ride professionally in the Men's league and allows us to be the first team to have a female rider. Many people thought her being available for transfer was a publicity stunt but we have intentions that are far from that. Krista is already a good TTist and at Androni we are expecting strong performances and we will also help improve her and turn her into a very strong rider. The guys better watch out because she is not afraid of the prospect of riding amongst them and beating them.
The only question left on everyone's minds is what does she look like?
I guess we'll find out soon

Third 2014 EPIC Signing
And with the second signing comes a third.
On behalf of the Androni Management we are glad to announce that 21 year old Qatari Stage Racer/Climber Ahmed Al Mohney has joined the team for the 2014 season. He is a young talented rider who should bring in a couple of results next season but will work mostly as a domestique for our leaders in Mountainous stage races. He is another signing for the team and allows us to make 3 more EPIC signings.

Our first race of this season part was raced a few days ago, this race was the Italian Tre Valli Varesine. Coming into the race we were aiming for a Top 5 but the UCI set us a ridiculous Hard Goal to win it. It had hills and climbs so would be quite suited to the team. We were hoping a late attack from Pellizotti would win it for us. Let's see how it turned out.
The Race
It was a little disappoiting that we did not get into the early stage breakaway but I guess this was because the team was working for Pellizotti which was proven as we set the early pace along with Euskaltel and Sky.
With 113kms to go the gap of the breakaway to the peloton was 3'45 and our Miguel Rubiano decided it was time to have a go so he attacked by himself.
With 93kms to go, so 20kms after the initial attack, Rubiano caught the breakaway which now had a 5 minute lead over the peloton.
88kms to go and Rubiano's pace split the breakaway apart and there were now only 3.
50kms to go and one man managed to rejoin the other 3 and surprise surprise Rubiano leads the break which now has a 4 minute gap to the Peloton.
39kms to go and now it is only Rubiano and Ferrari with a 3 and a half minute lead to the Peloton.
34kms to go and Rubiano is the lone leader, seen here lapping two Novo-Nordisk riders.
24kms to go, Rubiano has a 3 minute lead and Pellizotti attacks out of the peloton... this is later caught
15kms to go and Rubiano laps a large group of riders, he is the lone rider in front of the Peloton and looks like he will in it.
6kms to go and Rubiano passes more riders, he still holds a 2 minute lead.
And he crosses the line in first place, after 113kms of hard riding he doesn't even have enough energy left to celebrate.
Pellizotti crosses the line in 8th position.
Rubiano on top of the podium just confirms that we have indeed won our first one day race this season. This also means that we have achieved the Hard Goal which the UCI thought we would not be able to achieve.
Results
Name | Position | Time | Miguel Rubiano | 1st | | Franco Pellizotti | 8th | 1'54 | Emanuele Sella | 23rd | 2'34 | Francesco Reda | 24th | 2'34 | Diego Rosa | 27th | 2'34 | Evegeny Shalunov | 34th | 4'52 | Marco Frapporti | 49th | 7'48 | Ricardo Chiarini | 91st | 14'53 |

Two EPIC Riders Signed
A few days ago we confirmed the signings of our two newest riders. These two are the Lipawsky brothers from Switzerland. The first is 23 year old Sylvain, he is a good climber and will be leading our team more often than not in the 2014 season, in particular he will lead us in the Giro, Tour de Suisse and Tour de Romandie (if we get the Wildcards). His brother Pierre is a 21 year old Time-Trialist and a very good one at that. He will be leading the team in flat stage races with Time-trials and we believe he has the potential to become TT World Champion at a young age.
It should not take very long for the two brothers to adjust to life in Italy and we know they will get on well with other members of the team. This year they should both be able to bring some success to the team and in the future we expect big things from the Swiss Lipawsky brothers.

Hello, my name is Sylvain Lipawsky, I am from Genève in Switzerland, I have always loved the mountains, having trained on them since I was young, I'm very happy to have signed with this team, as it looks like it will give me lots of options for the future and I hope I can get to know my teammates. It is also very exciting to ride with my brother, Pierre. See you soon, Sylvain
Hi! I'm Pierre Lipawsky, I'm very exciting to join this team, and I hope I can contribute to the team. I come from Genève, where I live with my brother Sylvain, who I'm excited about racing with next season. I spent most my life on long flat roads, because I didn't like how my brother was so much faster than me on the climbs, so I hope to win some TT's this year. See you later! Pierre Lipawsky

Milano-Torino
Carlos Jose Ochoa is our best finished in 23rd which is a little disappointing. H was also the only member of our team to get a mention throughout the race after being in the day's breakaway.
Gran Premio Piemonte
We sent a team lead by Carlo Calzone not knowing that the race would be decided on two hills quite late on and not a sprint. Calzone finished 32nd, Frapporti 41st and Chiarini 48th so nothing special in one of our Italian classics.
Il Lombardia
Diego Rosa made a brave effort and was the last of the breakaway to be caught. Great stuff from the young talented climber. He was caught on the last climb by a favourites group of 15 but managed to hold on to finish 16th so a good race from him. Pellizotti in 36th was very disappoiting but I guess with Rosa in the breakaway it is understandable, and this was a very strong start list which makes Rosa's result even better.
Rosa attacking the rest of the breakaway
Rosa holding on
Giro dell Emilia
Another Italian hilly one day classic for the team. It was won by Vicenzo Nibali, Chiarini was our best rider in 34th. Ochoa showed our colours a small bit with attacks in the beginning but failed to make the break of the day.

World Championships Pre-Race News
Our 6 riders for the Team Time Trial at the World Championships are:
Ricardo Chiarini
Fabio Felline
Franco Pellizotti
Miguel Rubiano
Emanuele Sella
Evegeny Shalunov
Our Current Riders who will (and will not) be taking part in the World Championships:
Carlo Calzone was stupidly put in the U23 TT by the Italian Manager...
Carlo Calzone will be in the U23 Road Race and we wish him luck in that.
Miguel Rubiano will be riding in the Elite Road Race, our only representative in that.
Rather ridiculously none of our riders were selected by the Italian Manager, even the very strong Pellizotti. We were very disappointed by this but the Italian Manager didn't seem to care and cared more about his other one man team, we predicted as much from the other Italian team, a bit of bias.
Custom Riders for next year taking part:
-Ahmed Al Mohney will be representing Lampre in the Team Time Trial.
Delfi Cervero will be in the U23 TT.
Delfi Cervero will be the lone rider for his country in the U23 Road Race.

Yeah, manager, tell them! Let it be known, that I, Calzone, have no idea what I am doing in the U23 TT AND the U23 RR too. Neither the discipline nor the route particularly suit me, so do people just want to laugh at me when I'm forcing my way up the climbs?
You see me here in Hainan, following the Bardiani train... why? I do not know since our own train should be capable of matching them.
Meanwhile, since I signed with Movistar for next season, my motivation is hard to improve... too much party. Add to that the very, very little race days I have this season part. Surely, the class is still here but Piemonte wasn't suited to me at all. Right now in Tour of Hainan, I'm just picking up race shape and I begin to wonder that it will be too late to win again this season. The Giro took to much energy out of me is my excuse.
The season appears to be rather short but maybe that's because I spent half of it passed out under some broad's belly.

Hi Carlo,
I can fully understand that you don't feel too motivated for the World Champs. But you should not underestimate the power of experience in the big races. We know of your big goal for the future to win Milan-San Remo one day and for that you'll need to be prepared for the chaos and the pace of the big classics packed with top stars. And while the route may not suit you you will still learn how to organize your team in such races. This will surely help your development and you'll be stronger after the champs than before.

Hello,
Just want to let you know the Federazione Ciclistica Italiana is not happy with the accusations you have made against me. I am sorry you feel like Pellizotti should have been selected, but to accuse me of favouritism towards my own team is beyond ridiculous. There is only one Cannondale rider selected for the WC. Furthermore, Pellizotti is not as good as he once was, and we feel that we should give the younger riders a chance now.
About Calzone, it was the EPICUCI's decision to include as many EPIC riders as possible for the u23 races.

Need no train when people crash
I rarely pay attention to petty fights among cyclists but it just so happens that Adrien Hanzen might have got a new nemesis after losing Brouwer at this season's end. But what can I say, a race is a race, and when I profit from people crashing, it just so happens that I enjoy racing that little bit more.
On stage 3, a stage mostly being a short rumble in the jungle, a crash put out Hanzen and some other contenders out of the equation for the stage win. The race was on, Androni was fully riding like we Italians always do. I won by a winning margin of a nautical mile, world-class sprinter Kristoff not standing much of a chance. My teammates did great work to keep the pace high but I also showed how long I keep myself in the wind at full speed. Turns out, pretty long.
So, I finally got the legs after months of practically non-racing and partying. Time to reel in Guido and dream of the GC win. As for now, with this stage win I have fulfilled a season goal of Androni and I'm glad to have done that. It's a good way to give back to the team before leaving them. Guess the manager knew that he could count on me.

Yet again another win by me, this time mostly by myself against some tough competition. Hanzen is back to his usual self so SKY made a train. My Androni have been spent after the last couple of days, protecting the jersey. Even if it's just Hainan, there's some well-felt pressure in our team to take the GC win home by now.
pretty, pretty, pretty close
but looking best in leader's jersey, amiright?
Of course I didn't falter under this pressure, but even exceel! Those kind of stage races are perfetly suited to me and my second stage win in this race extends my lead even further. Different to Hanzen, I'm not afraid to jinx anything so I'm calling it now: I'm going for the big one.
Considering my race schedule for next season, I definitely think that my future DS sees where my strengths lie. No need to waste me on Grand Tours when half of the stages are mountain-bullshit. Give me some proper wind and a total height gain of 33 meters, and I'm all on top of the pack.
Seeing as how Tour of Hainan is my only proper race in season part 3, I had little reporting to do but hey - better late than never.
There was also recently the U23 World Championships in Firenze. I participated both in the U23 Time Trial as well as the Road Race. Now, I'm not sure why the Italian DS selected me for the Time Trial but maybe he just likes to see me race... or has tremendous hatred for me. With my italian buddy Di Silvestro, who took a great 5th place, we had a rider in the Top 10, so I could take it easy. I'm shit at time trials. Boring discpline. Give me the heat of the sprint anytime of the day. I actually stopped to get some hottie's phonenumber. I called her the next day and spent little time training for the road race.
Feeling the lack of training and the long nights with my new found dream-girl, I was hungover and terribly tired for the road race. I've some decent stamina so I held up for the better part of 200 kilometers, until finally being dropped. Man, I don't even know why I just stopped... Guess I wanted to prove myself something. When Belgian Verboven crashed, Belgians were all around me as they tried to come into the race. One of the Belgians asked if I wanted to join in and get back to the peloton, but I thanked and happily denied any ambitions whatsoever for this race. I finished way down on 58th where I humiliated a small group of riders in the glorious reduced bunch sprint for... 58th.

Signing: Ryu Kawasaki
Our 6th and final EPIC rider for the 2014 season is 21 year old Japanese sprinter Ryu Kawasaki. He is a very strong sprinter and after seeing how good the Calzone has been for us he decided that we had the riders to deliver him to victory next season. He will receive able help from Gavazzi, Felline and Frapporti in the sprints. He also has a good prologue and so will be useful for flat stage races. His target races will include the Tour of Turkey where he will race for stage wins and the Tour of Hainan where he will go for stage wins and the GC.
The team management believes he will thrive while racing for Androni and apparently Ryu can't wait to train and race with the rest of his team.

Vuelta a Burgos Review
The Vuelta a Burgos was a stage race that the team would be aiming at in the third part of the 2013 season as it was a mountainous stage race that was not in the World Tour. The goal we set for ourselves was a Top 5 in the GC and we hoped that Franco Pellizotti would deliver the goods. So, let's take a look.
Stage 1
Stage 1 of the Vuelta a Burgos is 135km and relatively flat.
Let's just say Degenkolb took a simple win, Pellizotti finished down in 16th.
Stage 2
155kms and flat but the finish has steep sections.
3kms to go and Reda and Rubiano are leading Pellizotti forwards.
We hit the front with 1200m to go.
Degenkolb overtakes Pellizotti when they hit the wall.
Degenkolb wins again while Pellizotti finishes in 2nd and moves up to 3rd in the GC.
Stage 3
Stage 3 is 173kms and Degenkolb should be favourite again as there are not enough climbs and hills here to drop him.
As we approach the sprint Pellizotti has Degenkolb's wheel.
Degebnkolb takes the win but not very comfortably, Pellizotti finishes in 4th place and is 3rd in the GC.
Stage 4
Stage 4 would be 157kms and quite a bit flatter than the final stage.
In a sprint Degenkolb took an easy victory. Pellizotti sprinted quite well for 9th place on the stage. He is still 3rd in the GC.
Stage 5
Stage 5 was one of the more mountainous stages and being the final stage it would decide the final GC placings for the riders.
Pellizotti joined the attacks with 30kms to go.
Pellizotti was unable to keep up with the speed of Valverde.
Pellizotti finishes 6th on the stage.
And he finishes 3rd in the GC quite far behind Valverde and Mollema but not far in front of 4th, 5th and 6th. This means we successfully complete our Medium Goal of a Top 5. Good work by the Androni Team. A few podiums and top 5's on stages here in Burgos as well as Rosa finishing 3rd in the U25 and being high up in the GC and the Points means that this race was a success.

Rider Review: Diego Rosa
The first rider we look at is young Italian Climber Diego Rosa. At the age of 24 Rosa is arguably the biggest talent that Androni has in their squad at the moment. At this point in time he has a climbing ability of 74 and a hill riding ability of 73. For a young 24 year old this is very good and although he isn't an EPIC rider introduced from the outside he is a rider who will be able to contest for GT victory in the years to come.
This season he played the role of a super domestique but was given some support with going for good results in the U25 classifications which were often dominated by the EPIC riders. He was a very important part of our climbing team this season. His contract will be renewed and hopefully we will see an even better rider next season.
Some of his more notable performances came in the big WT races and the recently completed Vuelta a Burgos. He was a part of the Tour de Romandie team which saw Pellizotti finishing just outside the Top 10 of the GC. He also aided Pellizotti to 3rd in the GC in the Vuelta a Burgos as well as multiple Top 5 stage finish's. He himself finished 3rd in the U25 classification and 13th in the GC which is a very good effort from him.
The greatest race for young Rosa was however the Giro d'Italia. He came to support Pellizotti to a Top 10 GC and see what he could do in his own GC and U25 rankings. He was involved in a few breakaways throughout the race and his top stage result was 3rd from the breakaway on stage 16. He finished the Giro in 22nd place in the GC and 6th in the U25 which is very good from us and second best after Pellizotti in the GC for the team.
