Race Tactics

After yesterday, I think it will be more of the same in terms of tactics. We will look to get a man in the break, aiming for the KoM jersey at the end of the day. Should it all come together for a bunch sprint, we will work for Philip.

Race Report

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0003_zpsbbfb4394.jpg

With the first KoM sprint 6km into the stage, attacks happened as soon as the flag dropped, with Dominik Nerz (BMC), Simon Yates (BRB) and Miguel Minguez (EUS).

Mountain Sprint 1

Sprint Point 1

Belkin and Lotto again took control of the peleton, and it was clear that the big teams were not threatened by the day's breakaway men.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0008_zps1be77570.jpg

The large number of sprints on the route meant that there was a good level of competition at each point, with all three of the escapees wanting to take maximum points.

Mountain Sprint 2
1. M. Minguez // 2. S. Yates // 3. D. Nerz

Time Gap -- 50km
Peleton > 6'09 > Leaders

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0011_zps1f961ba4.jpg

The peleton kept a nice steady pace over the course of the route, as a number of different teams took turns on the front.

Mountain Sprint 3
1. S. Yates // 2. D. Nerz // 3. M. Minguez

Sprint Point 2
1. M. Minguez // 2. D. Nerz // 3. S. Yates

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0013_zps2a8333d3.jpg

The rivalry at each of the sprint points continued on, with the large crowd cheering on the riders on each lap.

Mountain Sprint 4
1. S. Yates // 2. M. Minguez // 3. D. Nerz

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0017_zps2e132980.jpg

Despite the constant attacks and sprints, the trio worked well together, but it was clear the pace was slowing the more the stage went on.

Time Gap -- 120km
Peleton > 2'32 > Leaders

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0021_zps46954d21.jpg

Yates was the first to crack, losing contact with the break just before the final KoM and Intermediate sprint of the stage. Luckily, he has done enough to claim the jersey for tomorrow's stage.

Mountain Sprint 5
1. M. Minguez // 2. D. Nerz // 3. S. Yates

Sprint Point 3
1. D. Nerz // 2. M. Minguez // 3. S. Yates

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0023_zps843a97e1.jpg

Simon was the first to be brought back with 16km to go, and the other two shortly followed with 12km to the finish.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0024_zps4e3154c1.jpg

Just like yesterday, we hit the front and took control of the lead-out.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0025_zps159152c3.jpg

However, there was a small different to yesterday... the other teams struggled to get organised and we were in prime position for the sprint.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0026_zps5af77de3.jpg

The sprint was manic, with Bos just winning the stage, ahead of Tony Gallopin (RLT) in second and a magnificent ride from Lavery earns him a podium place in 3rd!

Stage Debrief

I am running out of things to say about this team! What a fantastic ride from everyone, and great result at the finish. Phil did a great job, as did all those involved. Well done to Simon for claiming the KoM jersey as well. He seemed keen to go out and test his legs, and he got his reward.

The big test is next... in the Mountains!

Well done Philip, a nice 6th and a podium finish is great. Looking forward to see what Villella can do against the big guns. Also, nice effort from Simon to get the KoM jersey.

@mvh: Could work out to be a great race if we are able to perform in the mountains. Villella will lead, as he has better fitness than A. Yates

@Selwink: it was a great sprint. Not bad for a rider who is in the team as lead out man...

** BREAKING NEWS **

cdn.media.cyclingnews.com/2011/05/25/1/uci_aigle_600.jpg

Date set for Hoyle's hearing

Cycling's governing body, Union Cycliste Internationale, today confirmed the 15th February 2013 for the hearing of Rapha-Bianchi Racing Team's manager Phil Hoyle.

The hearing is in relation to an incident at the Tour de San Luis, Argentina, in January between Hoyle and two of the Katusha Team bosses at the end of Stage 5 in Carolina.

No information of the incident will be released until after the hearing, but eyewitnesses at the scene say that 'obscene language' was used and that Hoyle and Katusha's Directeur Sportif José Azevedo 'had to pull apart' by members of each squad.

The matter seems to have arisen after Katusha's Dmitriy Kozontchuk was ordered not to work with Rapha-Bianchi's leader Remy Di Gregorio, after the pair broke away together at the end of the 5th stage. The race ended with the pair being caught by the peleton, and a larger more dangerous group going on to contest the victory.

Hoyle, whose team is performing well in Mallorca, was not available to comment.

Race Tactics

The mountains await, and our attention moves away from Lavery and his lead out, and more on Villella and Adam Yates.

We won't try and set any pace on the stage, but we will look to react to some of the attacks and see how they get on again the big name climbers.

Simon is feeling good after the stage yesterday, and wanted another day off the front, adding to his KoM lead.

Race Report

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0001_zpsd0469c03.jpg

As planned, Simon got himself into the break, but sadly had some big riders with him, in the form of J.J. Cobo (MOV) and Lars Bak (LTB).

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0003_zpse07deef8.jpg

Behind, more attacks came out of the peleton, with Alex Howes (GRS), Julien El Fares (SOJ) and Stefan Reichenbach (IAM) trying to bridge the gap.

Mountain Sprint 1 -- Cat.2

Mountain Sprint 2 -- Cat.3

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0007_zps4da418f1.jpg

All six formed a larger group on the climb to Coll des Tords, and began working well to open up the gap on the peleton.

Time Gap -- 55km

Mountain Sprint 3 -- Cat.3
1. J.J. Cobo // 2. S. Reichenbach // 3. J. El Fares

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0008_zps5ade3c0d.jpg

Suddenly, the pace was upped by BMC. Just after the Cat.3 climb of Coll des Tords, thy hit the front hard. Were they worried about the strength of Cobo and Howes? Or were they wanting it pulled back to limit Nerz's point deficit in the KoM classification?

Time Gap -- 70km
Peleton > 1'16 > Leaders

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0011_zps3ee97ba7.jpg

The higher pace took its toll on some riders. Haritz Orbe (EUK) would be one of 6 riders to finish over 45mins down on the day's winner and outside the time limit.

Sprint Point 2
1. A. Howes // 2. J.J. Cobo // 3. L. Bak

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0015_zpsb57ee500.jpg

Knowing that the peleton was on the hunt for the break, the decision was made to drop Yates back to the main pack. The stronger climbers in the break had destroyed all hope of a major points haul, but there was hope he will be still in the jersey tomorrow.

Sprint Point 2
1. S. Reichenbach // 2. J.J. Cobo // 3. L. Bak

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0018_zpse681c414.jpg

The catch of the break was made at the base of the climb of Coll de Soller, and a moment of calm fell over the peleton as BMC turned down the heat at the front.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0022_zps99fe86bd.jpg

Order was not restored for long, as Contador (TST) attacked off the front with David Arroyo (CJR) on his wheel.

Mountain Sprint 4 -- Cat.2
1. Y. Trofimov // 2. P. Velits // 3. A. Contador

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0024_zpsa05710c5.jpg

The two Spanish riders went over the top of the Coll de Soller, with Yuri Trofomov (KAT) and Peter Velits (OPQ) for company. This was a dangerous group.

ak8.picdn.net/shutterstock/videos/1621492/preview/stock-footage-seamless-bad-or-no-tv-signal-with-white-stripes.jpg

Suddenly the TV coverage went down! We had to rely on team radio, and attacks were happening all over the final climb to Coll de Puig Major. Dan Martin (GRS) seemed to be off the front, with Villella part of a larger 10 man group of favourites further down the climb

Mountain Sprint 4 -- Cat.1
1. D. Martin // 2. R. Gesink // 3. M. Kwiatkowski

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0025_zps58a2afa2.jpg

When pictures resumed, Martin was all on his own, descending to the victory. Robert Gesink (BEL) was 50 seconds back with Michel Kwiatkowski another 45 seconds behind him.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0026_zpsc1dc0a87.jpg

Villella was our highest placed rider on the road and was riding in a 5 man group on the descent to the finish in a battle for 12th place.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0029_zps9f67d2a6.jpg

At the front, there was no stopping the Irishman Martin, who comfortably takes the win. Villella would eventually cross the line in 13th place. Fantastic result for him.

Stage Debrief

Yet another fantastic performance from the team's young guns! Yates and Villella have left me speechless at their ride out there today. Yes, the sponsor goal at the start was Top 5, and given the Start List, that was a long shot at best. Instead, we have Villella, placed higher than a large number of Big Name riders (Contador, Horner, Sanchez), in 12th Overall and Adam Yates on the same time as that big group in 28th. Who would have thought that at the start of this race!.

In the KoM, Adam's twin brother Simon hung onto the Polka Dot jersey, and knows that he will still have to fight to keep it tomorrow. Depending on how he is feeling, he could go out for a third day and get it all finished off.

I will sleep tonight a very happy man!

In that last report, I decided to change a few things about how I report, and I just wanted to know what people thought about the little changes.

I have added little bits slowly to the reports (like the Race Tactics, Stage Debrief etc) over a few posts, but in this one, I changed my angle of commentary (more personal running commentary from Manager point of view than a general TV like commentary) and I have also changed the way to the results are posted (showing the full results and classifications instead of top 5 plus Rapha-Bianchi placings).

I just want to know everyone's ideas on these changes? Do you like them? Was it better before? Is there something else you would like to have part of the reports?

I am interested to know how these changes affect your reading of my story, as my reporting has changed greatly since my Cavendish story, and I know that that was very well received and well liked by the readers Smile

Sorry I didn't see the post after (long term Zabel'd Pfft)

Since this is a team story, prefer the manager style commentary. Also, with exported results I think that what you should do is:

If it's an important stage, with time gaps etc: Do what you did this time.

If it's not an important stage, like a sprint or TT: Do as previously.

Villella did a great job with his 13th place. Hopefully Yates can hold on to the KoM jersey. Smile

I did not notice you changed things actually, but reading back some previous reports, I think this might work better. I like the results better like this, cause now you have some indication how good their performance actually is against other strong riders. Smile

Davide Villella put in a Good ride today Wink

VoetsT
Good race for a young rider Yates and Villella

@mvh: 40 points on offer on the final stage so he will have to go out an fight for 1 or 2 of the climbs... just hope that no big climbers (like Contador) goes in the break wanting to gain time.

@sutty: he rode a great stage. Completely empty at the end, but well worth the effort.

@voets: Both rode the stage perfectly Smile really showed their potential

@cycleman & mvh: thanks for the feedback on the reporting. I will take it on board Wink you agree with what I was thinking myself Smile

No report tonight, as I am spending with my girlfriend. Sometimes, some things are more important than pcm Wink Next report will be tomorrow

Race Tactics

It was a big day yesterday for the team, and a bigger one today. Firstly, we need to get Simon's KoM jersey all sewn up and boxed off. Forty points on offer today, so he will hope he has the legs for one more big push.

Part 2 of the plan is to look after Davide and Adam. Keep them out of danger, avoid any splits etc.

Part 3 is trying to set up Lavery for the finish. After a great performance on stage 1 and 2, it is hard to make him our third priority for the day, but after talking with him last night, he understands. Let's get him over the Mountains and take it from there!

Race Report

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0001_zpsb748b32c.jpg

I couldn't have been happier with Simon at the start of the stage today. He was tired, but with the Polka Dots on his shoulders, he had a little extra to give. He was part of a dangerous 8 man break, which also included David Arroyo (CJR) and Julien El Fares (SOJ).

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0005_zpsc8c50b27.jpg

Eight became ten, as Franco Pellizotti (AND) and François Parisien (ARG) jumped across the gap. This was a break with a lot of climbing prowess for Simon to contest for this KoM jersey.

With a Yellow Jersey to defend, Garmin took the main control of the peleton, which some help from Lotto and Belkin.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0009_zps4a742a99.jpg

On the first climb, the gap continued to rise, almost reaching the 7 minute mark as the break ascended to the top.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0011_zps96349e75.jpg

Let battle commence for Simon! Arroyo and El Fares were out to get his KoM jersey, and we were having none of it. Round 1 to Yates!

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0012_zps6569545a.jpg

Round 2 and Arroyo tried to go for a long attack for the top of the Coll de Puig Major, but Simon was on it like a flash, comfortable taking maximum points in the process. Two out of two climbs was enough for 47 points. No one could catch him now.

Further down the climb, Radioshack had taken control and upped to pace in the chase of the breakaway.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0019_zps7c8ca36c.jpg

With job done, Simon decided to let the others fight over the points on the Coll de Soller. Jonathan Fumeaux (IAM) wanted to get in on the action, attacking Arroyo on the climb.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0021_zps0082af99.jpg

With a long descent off the final climb of Coll d'Honor, Radioshack knew that the break was still dangerous and began to turn the screw.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0022_zpsfd48c5c1.jpg

The increased pressure caused fractures in the peleton, as large groups dropped off the back.

Time Gap -- 135km

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0024_zps75b1d0fa.jpg

20km to go and the break had only 1'22 over the peleton. Surely it would not be off the front much longer.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0025_zps88797be2.jpg

The big teams must have been worried about the break though. Even stage favourite Theo Bos (BEL) was helping in the chase back, along with Daniele Bennati (TST).

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0026_zps2fe10847.jpg

10km to go, and less than a minute gap! Time for the last ditch attempts at staying off the front and in the fight for the stage win. Baliani (PPO) kicked first, with Pellizotti sticking close to his wheel.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0027_zpsd53a8f34.jpg

Sadly for Simon, this little accelerations were the killer! He lost contact with the wheel of Arroyo at the 4km to go mark, and he just had to hope he could hold off the chasing peleton.

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0028_zps89c198f9.jpg

How the break stayed away is anyone's guess. They hit the Flamme Rouge with a 50 second gap. The victory would be between Arroyo, Pellizotti and Duran (EFG).

i1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa348/the_hoyle86/Rapha-Bianchi/PCM0029_zpsf419baf5.jpg

Victory Arroyo! The Spanish rider just beats the Italian National Champion Pellizotti to line, with Duran rounding off the podium. Simon was sadly caught with 50metres to go, and finishes in the peleton along with Villella and brother Adam.

Stage Debrief

Yet again this team has left lost for words! Another outstanding performance from everyone, but especially from Simon Yates, in the break for the third day running and not only securing the KoM jersey but out climbing some of cycling's best. Delighted for him and a sign of things to come in the future.

Plan A done, so then it was Plan B and make sure than Davide and Adam finished safety. That was executed to perfection, and thank you to Dan Lloyd and Trent Lowe, who worked hard to watch over them all stage.

Sadly we couldn't go ahead with Plan C and look to have a go with Philip at the end. The climbs just took too much out of him, but again, thanks go to Damien and Fredrik to half giving him the opportunity by looking after him.

There is a small break (and the little matter of a hearing with the UCI) until our next race in Malaysia, but the team is certainly going there on a high!
