I like the idea of the Laurent Fignon Memorial. Hopefully Thomas can get a top 3 in the Cup.

Le Nouvelle Major
There once was a Major who stole much of Europe's hearts and adoration. In a time of peace he marched relentlessly across the continent conquering many of the powerful nations, stealing incredible victories with audacious attacks and moves. The bastion of the French fell at times and even the Flandriens could not halt his charge. Even the World fell beneath his relentless drive and passion. After a devastating campaign stretching eight and a half years he gave his life tackling the last great battle, his only remaining challenge.
Tom Simpson, also known as the Major, once conquered the world of cycling. He took jerseys, monuments and rainbows across his brilliant yet tragic career. He was more than just the cyclist, capturing the love of a whole continent with his charm and wit. Ever since '67 the UK has been looking for that next legend. Millar surpassed him in Grand Tour results, but his reclusive, quiet nature meant he never matched the presence of the Major. Boardman was always under pressure to go beyond his ability and tackle the big stage races. The other Millar nearly lost everything trying to match the great man's legacy. The UK has come closer more recently with Wiggins, and closer than perhaps wanted following his doping conviction. Many will say Mark Cavendish is that next man. He dominated the sprint for 4 full, almost unchallenged years. His bubbly, and emotional, character helped mold him into a superstar on the continent. It's close to the Major, but the Missile is limited to the flat lands.
Here we are around 46 years later and there is excitement which has not been seen in a very long time. A young Brit has been quietly ripping up all the records he can find at the amateur level. This young man has won 76% of the races he has entered in 2012. It doesn't matter what race it is, uphill, sprint, time trial, cobbles the kid has dominated them all. Following the troubles recently felt in the UK cycling scene his decision to come to France to race may have been the best decision he could have ever made.
Tom Lasnik recently signed for Roubaix-Lille Metropole, and French Continental level team based out of the North-East of France. The experts of cycling, as well as the press, have hotly tipped the young lad to be the next huge thing in cycling. Inevitably the connections were made, would this be the next Simpson? The similarities are uncanny and many cannot help but get excited. Le Nouvelle Major, as he is already known, might have some huge cleats to fill but there is no reason he cannot. The fall of the empire might be happening, but from the ashes "Roule Britannia"!

Really like this angle. Hope he can fill Tom Simpson's shoes.
Simpson actually lived in Belgium at the time of his demise. My mother lived in the same street. When his death happened live on the television, his wife and the entire street came out onto the street, uncertain and scared about what was happening. |

@Ian
That's pretty cool... well you know what i mean. It's not joke that most young Brits get compared to Simpson and if he's half as good that is an amazing career
@Sutty
Another great motivational post
@masterb

nice blog a very good read.
Just a small grammatical correction though: 'le nouveau major' would be better. If not, you are making Tom female...

My only reason why I said it because 'major' in the form of a military general would be masculine (le général etc).
Only time I have seen 'major' as feminine is when it related to a university/college subject.

Updated RLM's calendar to what it will be this season. All LFMT (Laurent Fignon Memorial Tophy) races are included and marked out. It includes every french race available. Note: The Criterium International is pending acceptance.
Updated Tom with a provisional calendar. This may well change once i can check out all the race profiles and do the team planning. But that is a pretty good idea of what it will be.
Polished of the .cdb file (no Wiggins or Sagan, and an "injured" Froome and Nibali) and with the 4 new signings RLM looks very nice indeed. Certainly going to fight for a number of wins in 2013!

Well it depends if you want him to dress like this:
In which case it can be considered as a shorten word for "Majorette" and you'll correct sticking with "la".
(Well in fact, you can't as I've never heard speaking of majorette using major, but I had an old jpeg of a majorette, and it is the first time I finally can thing of some use so I couldn't resist).
Otherwise "le" Major would sound correct (@the_hoyle, I guess you confused Major with "la Majeur")
btw, great intro, hope we still get some of this once the season is on
And you are welcome correcting all my English basic mistakes

I think I will clear this up, if you want to talk about an important news say: "La nouvelle Majeur" Not quite correct in french but it will not be disturbing.
Or in your case I think if you are talking about Tom Simpson you should use "Le nouveau Major"
And BTW it looks like you will made a career with RLM and that's a good thing as Lille is my home Town |

"I Don't Think We're in Kansas Anymore"
French... Francais... Franzoesisch... Francese... It's the international language of cycling. Or at least it was for most of the last 100 years. Some will argue for Spanish others for Flandrian, but to me there is no doubt that it's French. Peloton, Bidon, Mussette, Depart are all french words, and many many more are as well. More recently you could argue English has become the language of cycling. Following the legend of Armstrong millions of new fans have learned cycling as English, for the most part. And now with the growing powers of Sky that looks set to continue.
With that it's strange i find my self in the heartland of cycling. France, and on the Belgian border. I step out of the flat and within moments i'm on the classic cobbles that make up the toughest one day race in the world, Paris-Roubaix. A stones throw away and i'm in Flanders where cycling is a way of life. Just over an hour in the car and i'm in Ghent, home of the legendary Tom Simpson. All around me the the history of this great sport.
New beginnings are also hard to ignore. My first self-owned flat, my first pro contract, my first pro season, the list can on and on. Official team trainings kick off on the 20th in a couple of days, with the first races just after that at the end of the month. The winter has been spent in contact with the team trainers making sure i get the right miles into my legs for the upcoming season. It's going to be a long on not ending until October. I can't help escape this feeling i've fallen down the rabbit hole...
We've all met up as a squad for some socializing and get-to-know-you sessions. Happy i can speak passable French otherwise i'd be well screwed. Everyone's nice of course, and most of them have multiple years experience, so there is lots for me to learn. It's also a bit weird being with these 10+ season veterans, yet i am the absolute leader. I can see the resentment they hold, not least because i'm earning more than them. But they know it's because i hold some special talent, and that if they help me reach it they can get some great rewards... and a few drinks rounds.
There is no official team presentation for RLM. The team is not big enough to warrant one. We had a small question-answer/interview day in Lille a few days ago, mostly for the local press and L'Equipe. Not much to say about it really, but that people are certainly talking us up as serious underdogs for the season. Nothing spectacular expected, but should be fighting at the front end more than the team has done before.
I guess i don't have much more to say right now. I'll be blogging all season long, so look forward to these. If you reader ever have any questions please ask them, and i'll try and reply to them all. You can find my calendar on the Front Page along with my Goals and Results. First up GP de Mareseillaise at the end of the month. Might post before then, might be after, but certainly a blog about that race with it being my first.
So yeah, catch you later guys!

Not quite sure on the logic of the the riders taken out and the time periods, but your stuff is always a good read so I'll be watching. Hope you got your DL finished already XD |
