This is one of the reasons i quited cycling on the road bike, after i was almost killed too (i avoided the accident in last second). Now only mountain bike for me and it is even more fun and things like broken collarbone are the biggest danger...

thats really sad to hear when folks are forced off the road due to terrible drivers. after working in the city on my bike for a few years ive collected enough scars to last me a lifetime but im still out there, dont let em get ya down!

I just glad that I live in the country side and not any cities, there I can cycle on the road without many cars around so I don't get hit by anything, scared to death when I need to enter leiden though

I don't know, in cities the terrain is flatter and cars go slower. Where I live the terrain is really bumpy, curvy and hilly, the cars go fast and there are a lot of blind turns. Pretty dangerous. It's like a wooded area. So cities aren't bad. Of course countryside is optimal, but it could be worse.

RIP Exxon Duke, David Veilleux, Double Feature, and Monster Energy
Boonen update: He's doing fina in Oman, but he still has a lot of pain at his elbow. The question remains whether he'll be fine for the cobbles, he lost quite some condition in the hospital. If he had waited one more day, he would've lost his arm.

The countryside is still as dangerous, i remember being confronted by a bull in the middle of a road once, very scary
Always wear a safety helmet. I almost got hit by a tipping bookcase when I was riding my exercise bike at home. Never riding that deathtrap again. Furniture = killing machines.

Scared to death when you enter Leiden? Seriously?
Come on, here in the Netherlands, and especially here in the Randstad we have bike lanes literally everywhere, and when that's not the case, you ride as far to the right as you can. Also, in urban areas cars are only allowed to go 30 km/h, and even if you'd get hit, there are loads of people around.
At night, it's a different story, but just make sure your lights are working. Nothing to worry about though, especially in the centre of cities...
If I were you, I'd be more afraid of riding on countryside roads.
maybe I over reacted, I do dislike cycling in Leiden, people are idiots especially in Leiden and people aren't as helpfull as you might think. I believe that safety comes from two wayes. some people just don't pay any attention to others.
the only thing that I have sweared to most at when riding on the countryside roads is other cyclist (schoolchilderen that ride with 6 people on one line so I can't pass)
coming from a very metropolitan area of america (ive spent most my life in between New York City and Philadelphia) i cant say much about cycling in rural areas, but i do prefer the city to the suburbs we have here. no one in the suburbs watches for cyclists and there are just so little of us on the road in the first place that we get no consideration. most americans arent even aware that cycling on the sidewalk is illegal so car drivers often yell "get on the sidewalk!" and dont behave like we have the right to use the road.
the city is at least better in that aspect. drivers are aware we are there and most respect bike lanes. Philadelphia for example, though, has terrible bike lane placement. they allow cars to park on the right side of bike lanes so essentially we have a 2 foot strip in between traffic on the left and parked cars on the right. car doors are about two feet wide. you do the math haha! its called getting a "door prize" and its not fun. absent minded drivers sling their doors open to get out once theyve parked and dont realize theyre opening the door into a lane of cycling traffic. thats why alot of american cyclist here are rather spikey and angry at times. ive had to bang on cars with my ulock on several occasions just to get them to notice theyre turning directly into me haha.

Rodriguez has said in an interview that he will leave Katusha if they don't get a WorldTour license, even if they still get a wildcard for the TdF, because he wants to race all big races like Paris-Nice, Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège. He also said his next team will be a surprise.
