The hell of the north is here, a 250km route, with 45.8km of cobbles in store for those brave enough to take on the Paris-Roubaix, Today is in many ways the single hardest day on the calendar, and in no ways a target for our team, our aim is top 20, even that seems unlikely...

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/route-23.png

Our Squad is built around Tyler Farrar today, though he is not in perfect shape, and has little support over the cobbles, Rollin will do his best to protect Tyler, and we may join a breakaway early on.

Leader: Tyler Farrar

All the favourites are here today, Boonen, Pozzato, Cancellara, Leukmans, Breshcel, Flecha etc...

I'm not sure it's fair for me to pick a rider considering there success Pfft None the less, I'm going with Tom Boonen for Paris-Roubaix. after the fashion of his victory on RvV it's hard to look past him, especially considering his Classics collection so far this year, 5 races in total!

The morning saw Leopard and Sky set a terrifying pace right from the off, and despite 3 attempts, no break was allowed free, and as we arrived at the first cobbles section of the day, The pack had already reduced slightly, down to just 132 riders.

The pack continued shedding riders, without any interesting events until 43km when our race was abruptly ended, Farrar was brought down by a crash just in front of him, and lost 2'21" on a group which he was already struggling to keep up with, reduced to just 67 riders...

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0007-17.png

With 17km to ride, and the main bunch reduced to just 32 men, the first big attacks came, firstly Leukemans and Breschel attacked, though both of these attacks were controlled by the main men, the only effect being some riders shelled from the back as the pace stepped up.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0010-26.png

With 7km to go, yet another attack came, this time it was Flecha attacking, followed by Hushovd and Cancellara, Hushovd fell away but the duo led onto the Vélodrome.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0014-14.png

Flecha had the most left, the group behind split up, but couldn't catch him, and Flecha dropped Cancellara to take the race between two men on the lap behind, J.A can finally zip up his jersey and lift the Granite stone high in the air as victor of a highly odd Paris-Roubaix!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0018-10.png

The top 10 was made of favourites, and once again, my prediction proves a curse, Boonen only able to take 9th place on the day. Hushovd and Pozzato managed to come past Spartacus in the final lap to the world champ taking 2nd and Pozzato 3rd.

Despite our low expectations for the race, the way in which it was ended was a shame, the crash just after a cobbled section which had tired Farrar meant that there was no way back, despite the effort of Rollin and Phinney, and we had to make do with 44th place...

sutty68
I know it wasn't a great day for Exxon Sad, but i was so glad to see Flecha actually win a classic Wink

baggieboys32
@Sutty Yeah me too, in many ways the crash didn't bother me, I knew i wasn't going to get anything much from Paris-Roubaix, so it was nice to see him finally pull off the success!

Following the Flanders weekends, comes first the Amstel Gold Race, shortly followed by the Ardennes Duo of La Fléche Wallone, and Liége-Bastogne-Liége.

Amstel Gold Race is what's in store tomorrow for the riders, with 31 hills to cross, and 26.4km of climbing on the day spread across a 260km route, it will be a strong puncher who takes the race.

Chris Horner looked in fantastic shape during the Vuelta Al Pais Vasco, but the opposition here may prove that bit stronger, and the ability to really kick in the final climbs after over 250km of racing may not quite be there.

My Favourite of the day is P.Gilbert, he's had some good form already this season, including 4th in MSR, and his explosiveness in the hills could prove deadly today.

The rain is hammering down here in Amstel ahead of this years AGR, and combined with high winds, the race is likely to be an extremely difficult edition of the race!

The morning breakaway consisted initially of 3, then of 9, then of 4, until finally a large 14man group was allowed free from the Lampre controlled peloton, to open up a gap.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0004-19.png

Sure enough, the crashes started coming right from the start, Boassen-Hagen was the first to fall, slipping on a descent, but avoiding bringing down anyone with him, he was able to get back to the pack at this early stage without too much trouble.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0006-17.png

Next up, saw Martin Elmiger (AG2R) and a pre-race favourite go down, Alberto Contador (SBS) AG2R responded by sending the team back to help carry the swiss champion to the front, but Contador suffered a broken Collarbone, taking him out of the equation until mid June!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0007-18.png

It was not a good day for race favourites, Horner had a small crash, but got back very quickly, and then Cadel Evans hit the deck after around 175km, BMC had to drag him back to the pack, as he joined the list of men who had fallen prey to these tricky descents.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0009-27.png

With 30km to go, the first attacks started coming from the Punchers, Albasini (HTC) led a charge along with Gerrans (Sky), Nuyens (SBS), and Barredo (Rabo).

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0012-25.png

There attack was brought back, but caused the main favourites to give it a go as the pace stepped up, Gilbert, Cunego and Di Luca all made a jump with 13km left.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0015-14.png

The attack caused a response from other Favourites, Horner tried but was not strong enough in the legs, he stayed with the pack hoping to take the sprint if the pack could haul in the breakaway, Vinokourov joined the attack along with Sanchéz and the 5 out in front started to increase there gap.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0017-11.png

As it became clear one of this 5 would be victorious, the cat and mouse game started, Vino tried first and his attack upped the pace beyong the abilities of Sanchéz, before Philippe Gilbert made his move on the Keutenberg.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0017-11.png

When he went, none could follow, as the group of 3 had to wave so-long to victory as they watched Gilbert ride away from them at a speed beyond which they could react to, meanwhile in the pack, Horner found the wheel of Rodriguez, hoping to take a the final top 5 place in the sprint.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0018-11.png

Sure enough, Gilbert can celebrate atop the Cauberg, he wins with ease, over a minute over the main pack, Cunego managed to dig again and get away from the trio and takes second, whilst the final spot went to Di Luca, who beat Vino in the uphill sprint.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0020-5.png

The pack sprint was hard fought, and Horner didn't have enough to counter the fact that Rodriguez slid backwards on the Cauberg, he manages to cling on to 12th place for the side, left with the thought of what might have been if he had found a stronger wheel to follow...

Welcome to the first of the true Ardennes' Classics! a 200km route, with 3 ascents of the vicious Mur De Huy, a 1.3km climb, averaging 9.3%! The victor will likely come from a reduced pack today, unless we see a breakaway from similar to the group we had in the Amstel Gold.

img.over-blog.com/600x313/0/11/68/83/2011/Races-2/Fleche-Wallonne-2011-profil.jpg

The race features 17.7km of climbing in total, but unlike the Amstel Gold, these are focussed into a much smaller area, so expect the riders to show pain in the final kilometres!

Our Squad:
Leader: C.Horner
Free Role: T.Danielson F.Rodriguez
TM's: D.Pate M.Aldape B.Jacques-Maynes B.Colex J.Louder

We want to do well here in La Fléche Wallonne, Chris showed good legs last sunday, but was caught out by Rodriguez' lack of steam, and he is determined to make a better showing in the mid-week classic. The finish is likely to suit Chris better than that of AGR, the slightly longer Mur De Huy will make it harder for the Explosive Punchers to keep going to the top, so Horner may be able to hold off the rest and take a high placing.

Other Favourites
Last years winner, Cadel Evans returns once more to Belgium, looking to repeat his performance, and joining him is Amstel winner, P.Gilbert.

In fact, it's hard to pick out any of the names who are missing in what is set to be a thrilling 200km EPIC! Cunego was in top nick and just missed out so expect fireworks from the Italian.

Contador is unfortunate to not be joining us here in Belgium, his collarbone is worse than suspected, and his return is not likely to come before Early July, how badly will Saxobank suffer without there main man, presumably his aims will have shifted towards the Vuelta?

But anyway, enough of the waffle, the final action of the day is for me to pick my pre-race favourite: Damiano Cunego
Cunego came close to soloing across the gap to Gilbert in the closing kilometres, and the slightly longer Mur de Huy seems more likely to suit his style that Philippe, so his is my name for the day (Sorry Damiano) Wink

This morning saw much improved weather from Amstel, meaning many more people were interested in creating a breakaway, A large group of 14 gave it a go right at the start of the day, including our man- Fred Rodriguez.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0002-21.png

Neither Lampre or Euskaltel had a man in the breakaway early on, and seeing such a large group go forwards, they set up near the front, the pace was too high to make it comfortable for the break, and on the first lap of the Mur De Huy, this front group was reeled in.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0004-20.png

Not long afterwards, around 105km from home, Lequatre of Radioshack made a second attempt, with only one man going up the road, no one was interested in the chase, and he was able to create a gap.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0005-19.png

Seeing an opportunity to reduce the workload for the team, we sent Danny Pate forwards, the duo were both willing to work together, and they opened a gap of almost 6minutes with 70km to go.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0006-18.png

On the penultimate lap of the Mur De Huy, it became clear how little the pair had left in the legs, dropping form 2'53" down to just 57" on the ascent, as the packed upped the pace behind.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0008-25.png

And so, with 20km left, Lequatre made one last desparate attempt to go solo for the win, Pate didn't contest, he had nothing left, and Lequatre held a 35" lead for about another 5km.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0009-28.png

Back in the peloton, Horner was pulled to the front by Tom Danielson, who would try to protect Chris all the way to the foot of the Mur, not wishing to be caught out as we were last sunday.

Lequatres break was finally ended as the early attacks came, Robert Gesink made a jump past the break, but the pace behind was too high to maintain the lead over the flat terrain.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0011-17.png

Under the flamme rouge, the bulk of the pack was still as one, and Horners final lead out from Tom was complete, he had been dropped at the front of the pack, now it was time to test the competitions legs.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0013-23.png

Horner opened up the sprint around the same time as his competitors, who were made to pay for a fast pace and a narrow road, Gilbert, Schleck and Rodriguez were just a few of the names caught out by the thin road, and Horner was in a competition against Van Den Broeck for the victory in this edition of Fléche Wallonne!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0014-15.png

And he's done it! Chris Horner had the legs to sprint away from Van Den Broeck on the climb, whilst only Cunego and Sanchéz were able to get through the blocked road to take 3rd and 4th respectively, great work by Danielson to place Horner really payed off today, as we take home victory in the Fléche Wallonne.

Chris Horner, What a HERO Banana

baggieboys32
He's found some awesome form atm!
That and i love playing the Ardennes Wink

baseballlover312
This also means he'll be in good form if you stick with a Giro calendar for him.
RIP Exxon Duke, David Veilleux, Double Feature, and Monster Energy

Which is certainly my plan Smile
In terms of GT leaders and key helpers it should be:

Giro: Horner + Zabriskie
Tour: Armstrong + Danielson (Farrar as Sprinter)
Vuelta: Danielson +Zabriskie

The final route of the Ardennes week, and the declared "Monument of Cycling" is the 258km Liége-Bastogne-Liége, the race is the oldest of the trio, and has been running since 1892!

img.over-blog.com/595x298/0/51/65/79/FTV13/liege-bastogne-liege-2011-profil.jpg

34.0km of climbing are on offer today, with gradients peaking at almost 20%
The race finishes atop the Cote Du Ans, a 1.3km 5.3% average, so it is likely too see one of the more explosive punchers take the win here today.

Last years winner was the Kazakh veteran, Alexandre Vionokourov, he returns again this year, though his success has been limited so far this season in the classics, his best result was beating the bunch to 4th spot in the Amstel Gold.

Our Squad

Leader: Chris Horner
Free: T.Danielson D.Pate
TM's: S.Zwizanski C.Lewis C.Fairly P.Stetina P.Zajicek

The aim is to place Chris as high as possible today, though we saw in Amstel that the team faded over the back end of the race as stamina became an issue, hopefully we will avoid this today, and deliver Chris to a good position for the final grouping.

Other Favourites

D.Cunego: He's been pipped at the post so far this season, 2nd and 4th, he will be sure to be aggressive today as he looks to go one better than his Amstel Gold performance.

P.Gilbert: Having already shown his ability in AGR, before being caught out by a narrow road in FW, Gilbert suits the finish, he will surely be right up there in the finish.

F.Schleck: Fränk Schleck is a danger in the classics, but has so far missed out in a similar fashion to his team mate Cancellara in the Cobbled classics, expect Leopard to make life hell today as they look to rescue the spring classics season.

A.Vinokourov: The Kazakh may not be the youngest man in the peloton any more, but he showed in Paris-Nice he still has a kick taking 2nd behind team mate Kreuziger, If Astana play there cards right, we could well see a repeat performance of last year, with Vino taking victory.

My Race Favourite: Today my pick is once again for Cunego, he's been in strong form all year but is without a win, so he will be giving his all today, before he heads to Italy for the Giro, next week.

Well, it's here, La Doyenne! The morning breakaway was a hard fought affair, every team wanted to be represented, and so no one was willing to let it free, here is just one example of the huge breaks that gave it a go early on.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0002-22.png

Eventually, after the rest had burned out around 45km in, the 4 teams who had not tried at the start, (Euskaltel, Exxon-Duke, Vacansoleil and Movistar) formed a smaller group which could go clear, Zwizanski was our man up front, who was feeling exceptional on the day.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0008-26.png

With the Quartet maintaining a fast pace up front, the pressure was high in the pack, and many couldn't keep up with O-P-L, Katusha and Astana, who set the pace, with 20km the break had 1'47" reduced from a peak of 12'32, and Gilbert along with Sanchéz decided now was the time to break.
I considered an attack with Horner to keep up with Gilbert, but his legs were not there, the 258km route just seems slightly too long for him

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0014-16.png

Gilbert had timed it perfectly in the 3rd Ardennes classic, and with 700m to go, he held a lead of 50" he would have to blow up on the final climb if the pack of 60 behind would be able to overtake the lone man.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0018-12.png

Inside the peloton, the pack was thundering, and further cracks started to form, Horner was just able to hang on to the front group, but we were out of contention for the very top spots.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0017-13.png

Well, Gilbert did tire, but not enough to stop him adding LBL to his Amstel for the year, Horner can be proud to give the new American side something to take home from Spring in our debut season, having to make do with 23rd on the day.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/PCM0019-17.png

The sprint for second, saw a CT rider mixing it with the best, he was pipped on the line by Kolobnev, but Jerome Coppel can be very pleased with 3rd place, sprinting in ahead of Andy Schleck, and J.Rodriguez!

Transfer Update

Well Guys, it's early season, but I thought I should let you know the teams first recorded signing, we've managed to secure the signature of a young american who specialises in our weakest are- the cobbled classics!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/ShyVogel.jpg

At the moment, he's just 18years old, but he already will be one of our best men over the cobbles, and with so many years left to develop, he could turn into a highly valued rider.

We spotted Shy after he took 3rd place in the RvV Espoirs, perhaps a few years down the line, he will repeat that performance in the big time, and until then, he will work as yet another valued team member from when he joins us later in the year!

fcancellara
Vogel is Dutch for bird Wink

But he looks like a future cobble-star, exactly what your team needs!

@FCancellara- Nice, didn't know that, and yeah, i've been keeping an eye on the U23 americans, theres another guy who I might be interested in signing, he seems quite a strong TTist.

Welcome to the Classics and Rankings review!

Milan San-Remo:

1st: Tyler Farrar
2nd: Fabian Cancellara
3rd: Juan Antonio Flecha
Our highest: 1st place!

What a start to the classics season, a fabulous race which saw the punchers caught on the line by our very own Tyler Farrar, to give the side there very first classics victory!

Flander Classics

Ghent-Wevelgem:

1st: Stijn Devolder
2nd: Sylvain Chavanel
3rd: Mauro Quinziato
Exxon-Duke: 10th place: Tyler Farrar

Ronde Van Vlandaaren:

1st: Tom Boonen
2nd: Juan Antonio Flecha
3rd: Matti Breschel
Exxon-Duke: 34th place Tyler Farrar

Paris-Roubaix:

1st: Juan Antonio Flecha
2nd: Thor Hushovd
3rd: Filippo Pozzato
Exxon-Duke: 44th Tyler Farrar

The Flanders Classics were not a target for us, 10th place in G-W our highest placing on the 3 disappointing days, The big winner was JA Flecha, showing great form, and finally taking his own first Classics victory!

The biggest loser of the weeks, was Fabian Cancellara, he missed out on a single top 5 over the 3 races, and Leopard will not be pleased with there €100k/month man...

Ardennes Classics

Amstel Gold Race:

1st: Philippe Gilbert
2nd: Damiano Cunego
3rd: Daniele Di Luca
Exxon-Duke: 12th Chris Horner

La Fléche Wallonne:

1st: Chris Horner
2nd: Jurgen Van Den Broeck
3rd: Samuel Sanchéz
Exxon-Duke: 1st Place!

Liége-Bastogne-Liége:

1st: Philippe Gilbert
2nd: Aleksander Kolobnev
3rd: Jerome Coppel
Exxon-Duke: 24th place: Chris Horner

The Ardennes saw a second victory for Exxon-Duke, as Horner out sprinted the competition on the Mur De Huy, after being well positioned near the front for the climb.

Other than that, it was all about P.Gilbert, he won both of the longer Ardennes races, going solo with about 15km to race, and looks in a class of his own!

Individual World Tour Rankings

Well, Gilbert has done enough in the Ardennes to knock Kreuziger off the top spot, as he worked for Vino. We hold 8th place thanks to Chris Horner, following his wins in first the Basque, and then La Fléche Wallonne.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/indiwt.png

Team World Tour Rankings

In the teams league, it is Katusha who currently lead the way, thanks to strong placings throughout the year! We hold 4th spot, just 8points behind Leopard Trek who are in second, and 4points behind Astana in 3rd.

The big losers at this point of the season, are Saxobank, AG2R, and HTC. All 3 are yet to reach 100 points in the rankings, and Saxo have also lost there main man Alberto Contador, after a fall in Amstel Gold.

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/teamwt.png

The team now heads to Romandy, where Armstrong will again be taking the reins, before Chris and the lads that go with him, fly out to Italy for the 3week epic.

Other than that, we have just one more race in May, though it is one of the bigger targets for the team! Either Lance, or Tom (Danielson) will be leading our squad in the Tour of California, a very important race for our American squad.

It's here, the final stage race before we and the rest of the World Tour, head to Italy, The Tour of Romandy.

The race is 6 stages long, and includes 2 different TT's, an opening prologue, and a hilly TT on day day 4. Romandy is one of two Swiss hosted races, the second, The Tour Du Suisse, comes later in the season, not long before the Tour De France, meaning that both races see strong competition as they are used as warm-ups for the big stage racers!

i1146.photobucket.com/albums/o527/Baggieboys32/route-25.png

Every single day in the race could well see time gaps, but it is likely that the final 3 will be the most important, the queen stage on day 6, a 122km route, out of, and then back to Sion, which contains 3 selective climbs.

Our Squad

Leader: Lance Armstrong
Frees: D.Zabriskie T.Phinney
TM's: J.Louder B.Colex S.Deeny S.Cozza C.Meier

This is Lance's second stage race of the year, and his form is slightly better going into this one, as such, he should be aiming for a higher placement, especially upon day 5, when the finish should best suit his style of riding.

The race should see those men who can TT well performing strongly with 2 races against the clock, so it would be unsurprising to see someone such as Leipheimer or Wiggins placing very strongly here in Switzerland.

Tony Martin leads HTC here, whilst he may lack some strength in the mountains, will his ability vs the clock be enough to see him home?

My Favourite: I'm going to go with the (Actual) 2012 victor, Bradley Wiggins for this one, he had a highly disappointing time in Catalan, and he is yet to record a high placing of the style he would hope for, so I think Sky will target this race, as a good way to open the Englishmans seasan properly.

Stage 1 Prologue Results

The prologue saw T.Martin taking the race lead over the 4km course, setting a time on the day of 6'00 dead, he beats Kreuziger and Leipheimer to the race lead, whilst Armstrong makes a strong start, taking 8th place, just 3' down on the overall.

Both Taylor Phinney, and David Zabriskie also put in good performances for Exxon-Duke, picking up 15th and 21st respectively, a good sign of form ahead of the later days, and possibly also the Giro D'Italia, if they can show there worth here over the next week.
