Tour Meditarraneen - Stage 2

img546.imageshack.us/img546/1488/34530127.jpg

The team just have to rest today and get through the stage. David is going to be protected to ensure that he won't loose too much power for the upcomming stages.
It's a stage for the sprinters - So Østergaard will of course be looking for a good wheel to bring him forward to the finish

Stage favourites

The morning break contained 4 riders who were no threat to the GC or the stage due to their weak abilities - Therefore they were under control all day long and was caught before the finish.

Before the sprint started there was a little chaos because of the wide roads, but especially AG2R made a great leadout for their sprinter A. Vichot.
Niki Østergaard tried to follow P. Lighart (Rabobank) who was working his way towards the front of the pack

img64.imageshack.us/img64/5520/10442370.jpg

As we had 3 km left, Rabobank had made their leadout for P. Lighart beside AG2R's train. Unfortunately for Østergaard, race leader J. Tombak (Onda) had sneaked himself into the wheel of Lighart, leaving Østergaard to take his wheel

The final sprint begins with Østergaard behind the race leader

img542.imageshack.us/img542/7984/94105054.jpg

Unluckily AG2R's train were stronger than Rabobank's and therefore Østergaard was in a bad position in the final sprint. He tried to get past the other riders, but was simply too blocked to do anything

Østergaard unfortunately gets blocked, but tries to get past

img402.imageshack.us/img402/866/71821854.jpg

AG2R's leadout train was perfectly timed today. Therefore A. Vichot (AG2R) could easily take the win in front of P. Lighart (Rabobank) and P. Gilbert (Omega Pharma)

Vichot takes the win

Race evaluation

Our main goal today was to bring David securely to the finish without loosing too much energy - And that did we achieve.
Østergaard seemed to be doing well, but when even a man like Gilbert can be blocked, we can only be happy with Østergaard's achievement today.
Tomorrow is going to be much the same as today.

Tour of Qatar - Stage 6

img155.imageshack.us/img155/5250/73206804.jpg

This is the last stage of the Tour of Qatar. We have had some very decent results and we've even fulfilled our sponsor goal to win a stage.
But we have been disappointed about some of our unsuccesfull leadout trains which havn't worked the way we wanted them to be.
Therefore we are very hungry after a good result on the last and short stage of the race.

Stage favourites

img207.imageshack.us/img207/5228/3starsm.png A. Guardini

img20.imageshack.us/img20/6002/2stars.png B. Bozik, J. Rojas

img805.imageshack.us/img805/6598/1star.png B. Swift, D. Galymzyanov, T. Bos

As usual a morning break got away from the pack. The break contained 9 riders with no one who was a directly threat to the GC.
The most prominent names were A. Txurraka (Euskaltel), I. Wilkinson (Endura) and Y. Arashiro (D'Angelo)

The morning break

img411.imageshack.us/img411/3562/58466165.jpg

Because of the short length of the stage, the breakaway was quickly held under control by the Katusha team who wanted to secure A.Guardini's overall win.
But with 33 km to go, the old Astana rider D.Muravyev stroke away from the pack. He quickly came up to the breakway and soon he drove away from them to go solo

D. Muravyev attacks from the pack

img267.imageshack.us/img267/4800/44842999.jpg

But with 10 km left Muravyev's solo effort was over, because of the extremely fast battle for positions in the pack.
After some struggle, we got our own riders in the positions we wanted them to be in. Therefore we finally could make a working leadout train for Ben Swift

Swift in great position as Muravyev gets caught and Team EnergiFyn - TDC makes a leadout train in the left side of the road

img543.imageshack.us/img543/3166/36763594.jpg

Our train was working very well since we now started to get into the very front, trying to overtake Vacansoleil's position.
From the very front of our sprint train is: G. Bak, J. Bellis, S. O'Grady, M. Finetto and B. Swift

Our leadout train is trying to capture the very front

img406.imageshack.us/img406/7481/82289414.jpg

And finally our leadout train overtook Vacansoleil's position, leaving them to find a new way to get into the front.
Now we had a very good chance of doing something great, because of our perfect position

Team EnergiFyn - TDC alone in the front with 5 km to go

img833.imageshack.us/img833/364/32130392.jpg

Our train drove really fast, meanwhile our biggest threats were trying to organize themselves.
Race leader A. Guardini's Katusha team therefore tried to get up along with our train, with the overall 3rd, Degenkolb (HTC), in his wheel

Guardini and Degenkolb trying to get to the front

img684.imageshack.us/img684/1750/78331000.jpg

Katusha's train were almost beside us when the sprint started to break free, but unluckily for them Guardini seemed to have trouble following their wheels.
From our own train O'Grady now started to sprint as the first leadout man of our team

The final sprint breaks free

img502.imageshack.us/img502/4654/96231081.jpg

As O'Grady had done his job and Finetto took over, Guardini, Bos and Bozik were still a long way behind

Finetto takes over, while our biggest threats seem a long way of

img84.imageshack.us/img84/5846/19507996.jpg

As we got under the final kilometre banner, Swift went past Finetto alongside with B. Riccio who had been claiming himself to Swift's wheel and T. Bos (Euskaltel) who tried to overtake the front

Swift goes past Finetto

img263.imageshack.us/img263/9227/96409021.jpg

And YES!!! An astonishing performance by the great Ben Swift!
Even though Guardini and also Rojas in the left side of the road, came from behind with a fast speed, Swift had no problem keeping them behind himself - A great win for the team, which is really important for us

Ben Swift wins the 6th and last stage of the Tour of Qatar

We ended this race the best way we could ever have done it. Swift got his second stage win and secured his overall second place in the GC, while we had a very great succes with our leadout train.
There's some very good things which we're taking with us from this race, but also some constructive lessons and learnings - So now we have to celebrate this fantastic win... See ya

Tour Meditarraneen - Stage 3

img10.imageshack.us/img10/763/43742041.jpg

This is another stage which look like it could be a mass sprint finish. Therefore we will keep David Veilleux under protection and see if Østergaard can make something in the sprint

Stage favourites

Today it was a quite big break who got free of the pack, but fortunately the level of the riders weren't very high. But actually one rider we were paying attention to, it was H.Schwab (Wallonie), the really great climber had sneaked himself into the break, who actually could do some serious climbing

The 12 man break with H. Schwab (Wallonie)

img85.imageshack.us/img85/9826/10321350.jpg

Even though the break got almost 7 minutes to the pack, they were caught in the right time. Unfortunately we had to spend some energy helping the other teams.

It came down to a mass sprint finish after a threatfull attack from J. Vanendert (Omega Pharma).
Østergaard was a long way back in the moment of confusion, but his teammates C. Kness and S. Vanmarcke helped him up in the front just in time

Østergaard gets to the front just in time

img683.imageshack.us/img683/6517/80516974.jpg

When C. Kness had done his job, Østergaard was now leaved by himself in the back of the sprinters and it seemed almost impossible to reach the front when he decided to follow M. Vantomme (Wallonie), while both Rabobank and AG2R overtook the front

Østergaard in a bad position when the sprint starts

img706.imageshack.us/img706/3007/90848742.jpg

But luckily the riders spread out and Østergaard saw his chance to get to the front when no one seemed to follow yesterdays winner A. Vichot (AG2R). Therefore Østergaard now tried to catch his wheel with about 800 metres to go

Østergaard tries to catch Vichot

img535.imageshack.us/img535/4775/12858019.jpg

Østergaard had now caught the wheel of Vichot and had to try going past him. At this time he was really exhausted after the great speed up to the front while he was now in a provisional 4th place

Østergaard catches Vichot

img13.imageshack.us/img13/6750/37282928.jpg

But as I said before, Østergaard was really exhausted after the great performance and therefore couldn't get past Vichot. But meanwhile M. Belletti (Colango) had timed his sprint perfectly and could take the victory.

If you're thinking: "But where did P. Gilbert went?", then take a look in the results - That man is unbelieveable fast, he just came from nowhere...

Race evaluation

Østergaard did a great job today against some really good sprinters. So we are very happy for his top 5 today. David was protected all day long by Anders Lund and he seem okay fresh for tomorrows hilly stage.
The only thing which was a little negative was how much energy we had to spend, becuase of the threat of the breaks in the last part of the stage.

Tour Meditarraneen - Stage 4

img10.imageshack.us/img10/763/43742041.jpg

The sprint stages are gone, and we'll now begin riding in a more hilly terrain. Especially the finish is very tough because of the uphill gradients.
Our plan is to eliminate every threatening breakaway, because there's surely going to be a lot of them. David has to keep himself in the front and also Cataldo.

A lot of really tough breakaways broke away from the pack in the morning, but together with Onda and Omega Pharma, we eliminated them. Therefore we were very happy when a quite unknown Frenchman, M. Hary (Roubaix), came away alone

M. Hary on a solo ride

img443.imageshack.us/img443/9901/14169815.jpg

M. Hary was still in front with 25 km to go, when the first attack from the pack showed up. It was the biggest favourite of them all, World Champion Phillipe Gilbert who stroke away.
We immediately started chasing him

Gilbert strikes away from the pack

img718.imageshack.us/img718/6038/71354516.jpg

Fortunetly Gilbert didn't got a really big gap, so we caught him with about 15 km to go. When Gilbert was caught, former French champion P. Fedrigo (FDJ) contra attacked

Fedrigo contra attacks

img11.imageshack.us/img11/1346/95108162.jpg

Francaise des Jeux appearently tried some sort of double attack tactic, since they a few kilometres send A. Jeanneson away from the pack, trying to catch his own teammate Fedrigo.
As seen on the image below, we started to speed up the pace in the pack to avoid more breakaways

A. Jeanneson tries to catch Fedrigo

img207.imageshack.us/img207/4332/84014386.jpg

Jeanneson caught Fedrigo, but Fedrigo was too exhausted to follow Jeanneson's pace and therefore he fell back to be caught by the pack.
Meanwhile Gilbert wanted to try again and this time only 10 km from the finish. M. Hary was still alone in the front, and is visible up the road in the picture below

Gilbert tries again

img641.imageshack.us/img641/8536/65003461.jpg

It took some time and a lot of energy to catch Gilbert, but we did it.
M. Hary had done a very good job keeping up his speed and now seemed very secure on his stage win with 1' minute to the pack

M. Hary still in front just before the final kilometre

img546.imageshack.us/img546/7549/45080697.jpg

The pack was in one piece when their sprint started. It was Fedrigo and race leader Tombak who started the sprint in the left side of the road.
Østergaard came from the middle of the pack with Cataldo and Veilleux in his wheel - A perfect position to be in

The sprint starts with our main riders in perfect position

img80.imageshack.us/img80/7254/49818333.jpg

Luckily for us it seemed like Gilbert was blocked in the left side of the road - Else way he probably would have won. But M. Hary just held the pack behind himself. What a ride from the Frenchman who no one believed in when he started the morning break - Congratulations!
The finish really suited Østergaard perfect and he rode himself into the 3rd place, also Cataldo and Veilleux kept themselves all up in the front

M. Hary wins just before the pack catches him - Østergaard becomes 3rd

Race evaluation

We've used a lot of energy today, but i think it's that worth. It was really great to see that we could catch Gilbert not only one, but two times.
Østergaard made a great finish, but also Cataldo and Veilleux.
Tomorrows stage is the last and most crucial, we have no idea of what it's going to be like, so we'll take it from there tomorrow.

Tour Meditarraneen - Stage 5

img221.imageshack.us/img221/634/27979049q.jpg

We've reached the penultimate stage of the race. The last and most crucial stage of the race finishes on the top of the feared mountain, Mont Faron.
With David Veilleux in good position, we'll of course try to ride for him, even though we've got some major riders who could have ridden their own chances.
The major favourite is of course Gilbert. It will be difficult to control him, but we'll try our best.

Stage favourites

img207.imageshack.us/img207/5228/3starsm.png P. Gilbert

img805.imageshack.us/img805/6598/1star.png C. Barredo, S. Gerrans, J. El Fares

The day started out with some very dangerous breakaways which we had to stop. After some time, it seemed like the whole pack was agreeing on that their shouldn't be a morningbreak today.

The affect of the non-being breakway, resulted in a main focus on the last two climbs of the stage.
Omega Pharma was very active in the front when we got to the bottom of the first small climb, and sat a major speed

Omega Pharma active in the front

img818.imageshack.us/img818/9999/55995922.jpg

When we got a little up the climb, Gilbert couldn't wait any longer and told his teammates to stop leading, and immediately he broke away

Gilbert breaks away on the second last climb, with 13 km to go

img266.imageshack.us/img266/8561/40574941.jpg

Other riders also got away when Gilbert attacked and now made up a group of 5 riders.
The five men were, Gilbert, Bakelandts (Omega Pharma), El Fares (Cofidis), Fedrigo (FDJ) and Pineau (Europcar)
Down in the pack, our team was now struggeling to catch them back to the pack

A five man favourite group is made before the final climb

img823.imageshack.us/img823/1857/32162774.jpg

We used every resources to pull back the highly dangerous group. Luckily it worked, and they got back into the pack. But Gilbert hadn't even started his showoff yet, since he immediately attacked when he got caught.
This time no one seemed to be able to follow him, since the climb now started to rise very fast

Gilbert breaks away yet another time

img208.imageshack.us/img208/575/21260428.jpg

Veilluex was already near falling off the pack. But he fought very brave and was able to be in the front group. Anders Lund really did a great job helping him to find his rhytm which paid of.
Even though Østergaard certaintly ain't a climber, he feld totally fresh and really comfortable today. At this time we some sort of already knew that Gilbert was going to win the stage and probably would win the GC, therefore we decided to let Østergaard drive his own chances, since the other guys took care of Veilluex.
Therefore Østergaard now attacked mid-aways on the climb

Østergaard attacks on the climb

img16.imageshack.us/img16/7527/69023172.jpg

Gilbert was simply too good to race against the other riders. He drove his own race, and his victory never seemed to be in danger.
He was already minutes in front of the pack, and could therefore spend a lot of time raising his hands towards the sky, knowing that he also had just won the stage and the GC

Gilbert a cut above the rest

img847.imageshack.us/img847/7954/54988727.jpg

Østergaard actually came away from the pack, and was working his way towards El Fares (Cofidis) who was between the pack and Gilbert.
Østergaard caught him, but unfortunately El Fares just crossed the line a few metres before him

David Veilleux was a long way down in the pack, but not as long as he thought himself. Therefore he got some very great news when he crossed the line...

Østergaard comes in 3rd

Race evaluation

We had high expectations about a overall win today, but when we are thinking back at what we'd performed today, then this is a fabulous result.
Veilleux ends in second, Østergaard ends in fifth and wins the youth compitition and the team catches the overall team classification.
I'm really happy now and the guys have worked hard for this result - Congratulations guys, You're amazing!

I was just about to post the same thing. Very nice pic there.

And a very good result as well. Two in the overall Top 5 is excellent.

Thanks guys, and yes it was a really nice result, especially because it was so close in the GC. If David had driven 3 seconds slower, he would have been in 4th overall - Kind of thought provoking Pfft

We've reached the middle of February which means that Tour du haut var is about to begin. We've had some really good memories with this race which we've competed in the last two years.

The team

img225.imageshack.us/img225/9450/teamgb.jpg

Niki Østergaard showed great shape in Tour of Meditareen and therefore he has been givin the role as main leader of our team.
Last year he won the race, by winning stage 1 and keeping himself in the front group on the more hilly stage 2.
Østergaard will be supported by a very young team, but also a very strong team.

Good luck in Haut Var!

andy222c
@Sutty68, I agree that our lineup could be much better, but actually i think we'll have a good chance of doing something great in this race.
Østergaard will be the main factor for succes and he has shown great shape in the last races, so we'll be very confident. It's also important to remember that it's still early in the season, and for many riders, this is the first race of their season Smile

@YvesStevens, Thank you!

Tour du haut var - Stage 1

img337.imageshack.us/img337/1604/55425393.jpg

The first stage suits Østergaard very good. There are some hills, but still there aren't too much, which is perfect for Østergaard.
Omega Pharma seems to be top favourites, so we'll let them control the race, while we can save our energy in the middle of the pack.

A 10 men break got away in the start of the race. Within the break weren't any big threats to the stage or the GC.
The breakaway got about 7 minutes to the pack, when Omega Pharma began to use energy pulling the gap down - With 10 km to go, all were caught

The morning break

img834.imageshack.us/img834/5978/31370192.jpg

When the break was caught, it came down to a mass sprint. We hadn't used so much energy, so we started to build up a leadout train for Østergaard.
With 4 km to go we were in perfect position with A. Lund in the front with Greve, Tanner and Østergaard in his wheel

Østergaard in perfect position after his leadout train

img88.imageshack.us/img88/8463/26342938.jpg

The sprint began to start, while Lund dropped down and let Greve take over - With 2 km to go, we were still in front, while the finish now was spotable

Grevetakes over

img828.imageshack.us/img828/5978/71507645.jpg

We were near the finish while Tanner dropped down to leave Østergaard on his own with one kilometer to go. In the left side of the road came G. Meersman (Omega Pharma) with a phenomenal speed

Østergaard puts in his final effort

img194.imageshack.us/img194/397/59399971.jpg

Østergaard gave it everything to catch up Meeersman, but unfortunately he were only centimetres from the victory. Meersman won a nice stage with a great effort. He is in great shape at the moment, which he also proved in Tour de Meditareen a week ago

Østergaard just centrimetres from the victory who was taking Gianni Meersman

Race evaluation

We didn't get the victory, but podium spots are always nice to get. Today there were some major time differences, which now means that Østergaard will have a decent chance to finish in top 5 or at the podium

Tour du haut var - Stage 2

img15.imageshack.us/img15/7892/61370577.jpg

The second and last stage of the Tour du Haut var is a lot more hilly than the first stage. With Østergaard within the chances of a GC victory, we'll try to get it all down to a mass sprint finish.
But we'll have some quite difficult competition, especially from the Omega Pharma boys who got both Bakelandts, Vanendert and Gerrans on their team.

img805.imageshack.us/img805/6598/1star.png N. Roche, P. Rolland, N. Østergaard

A 7 men break got away in todays stage. No one was defined as a complete threat to the GC or the stage, except for J. Van Goolen (De Koninck) and L. Lefévre (Europcar)

The morning break

img197.imageshack.us/img197/2258/70594790.jpg

After we had pasted the greatest mountain of the stage, the pack was already begining to get smaller and smaller - It was especially Omega Pharma who sat the high pace

The pack is already highly reduced after about 100 km

img717.imageshack.us/img717/5862/46309190.jpg

With about 30 km to the finish, some riders tried their luck to get away from the pack - Here it is R. Zingle (De Koninck) and D. Champion (Europcar), but unfortunately for them, they were caught before the finish

In the front break, the riders couldn't agree on staying together. Therefore R. Kluge (Skil) and J. Van Goolen (De Koninck) broke away from the other escapies, to go alone

The pack was near the break when they got to the final climb 15 km from the finish. Omega Pharma sat a high pace in front and actually caught the breakaway before the climb even started - Suddenly they stopped pulling at the front, and J. Bakelandts stroke away in a high speed.

At this point of the stage, we had only N. Østergaard, M. Greve and A. Lund in the front of the pack. But we couldn't let Bakelandts go away, and therfore we immediately reacted by sending A. Lund up in the front to catch Bakelandts

With 8 km to go, we luckily caught him back into the pack again.
Because the speed was so high, there was only about 20 riders left in the front pack - Which now seemed to agree on a sprint finish.
Østergaard had saved all of his energy for this point, because he knew he was one of the best for these kind of finishes.

When the pack reached the final kilometres, Lund tried to go to the front with Østergaard in his wheel. But unfortunately the race leader G. Meersman (Omega Pharma) came in between.
At the left side of them, were S. Gerrans with Bakelandts in his wheel

The sprint is about to begin

img521.imageshack.us/img521/3394/14506159.jpg

The sprint started and Meersman didn't seem to sprint, because he had just seen Bakelandts stiking away very early in the middle of the road.
Therefore Østergaard seemed to be forced to go after Bakelandts, who already had build up a nice gap

img263.imageshack.us/img263/7954/63606648.jpg

With one kilometer to go, Østergaard caught Bakelandts wheel. But other riders had done the same, and with 800 metres to go, 5 riders actually had the chance of getting the victory - Including Østergaard

YES!!! Østergaard finally got the victory. On the last hundred metres he started pulling away from the others, and could cross the line as the first.
He really showed his great ability of winning sprints in smaller groups today, and by that victory, he also claimed the overall GC for the second year in a row!

Niki Østergaard wins the stage and the GC!!!

Race evaluation

The results above speaks for themselves. This race has yet another time becomed a super experience for the whole team. Østergaard has been riding amazingly in both stages and i couldn't have asked for more from his side of.
I also think our team have done very well. Jugded by their experience and age, then their job have been world class.
Next races are going to be the swiss one day races in Lugano which is our sponsor goals - We'll be looking very much forward to these races.
