Great effort there with Savini. It's always good to wear a jersey in a Grand Tour, especially when it's an Italian based team in the Giro. Smile

Too bad Savini couldn't hold it up front.... But be aware of Rujano, in my game, he was even a better climber than Contador and Gesink, so he'll get top 5 in the GC for sure!

Colnago is attacking and attacking like in real Giro, it almost paid off, keep up the great job. And you have excellent reports btw. Smile
I'll be back

@ FreitasPCM: Thanks. Getting in the jersey is great. With so many summit finishes it will be hard to keep it, but I'll try.

@ baia: Thanks!

@ dienblad: Rujano is worrying. However, I doubt he'll get that type of freedom from the peloton again.

@ Avin Wargunnson: Thanks a lot. I will keep attacking to the end.

Giro d'Italia: Stage 8

Sapri - Tropea: 213.8km

Today, the peloton hugs the Tyrrhenian coastline for over 200 kilometers, moving from Sapri to Tropea. The days stage will set up tomorrow's much discussed Etna stage. It is one of the last sprint chances.

The riders were clearly tired from yesterday's climbs, and the day started lethargically. Eventually, a break formed. It contained Ruggero Marzoli (Acqua & Sapone), Robbie McEwen (Team RadioShack), Baden Cooke (Saxo Bank SunGard), Matteo Montaguti (AG2R La Mondiale), Maxime Vantomme (Katusha Team), Kurt-Asle Arvesen (Sky ProCycling), Davide Viganò (Leopard Trek), and Luca Mazzanti (Farnese Vini - Neri Sottoli).

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/273.jpg
The breakaway.

They built up a lead of up to 8'30 at one point, but the peloton wasn't going to be careless. A group of riders from Lampre, Omega Pharma, Garmin, and Colnago reeled them in without too much trouble.

The only thing standing in the way of the sprinters and glory was an uphill finish.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/274.jpg
Not the easiest ending.

Marco Frapporti was pulling the peloton up the climb, trying to set up Sacha Modolo. Modolo wasn't following Manuel Belletti well and started to fall back. Then, complete disaster struck as Modolo fell, causing a big crash.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/275.jpg
A bird's eye view of the ascent and the crash.

Besides eliminating Modolo from the proceedings, there were further implications. Domenico Pozzovivo was caught behind and had to pull up. In the chaos, it was impossible to tell which groups the riders were in.

Up the road, several sprinters made it up the climb in good position and began to fight it out for the stage win. André Greipel (Omega Pharma - Lotto) led under the flamme rouge. Borut Božic (Vacansoleil - DCM Pro Cycling Team) was in his wheel.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/276.jpg
The sprint goes on ahead of the chaos.

Moving too soon, Greipel faded a bit, and was overtaken by Božic in the last meters. The Slovenian captured the win, moving himself into a tie with Matthew Goss (HTC - Highroad) for the points' jersey.

Belletti faired well riding for himself. He came in 6th, having also escaped harm in the final kilometers.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/277.jpg
Božic wins, just ahead of a frustrated Greipel.

Attention would quickly swing back downhill, where many riders were collecting themselves. Only 20 riders made it in the leading group. Jurgen Van den Broeck (Omega Pharma - Lotto) and Juan Mauricio Soler (Movistar Team) were the only GC contenders in the group.

37 seconds later, a group of 15 riders came in; maglia rosa wearer Vasil Kiryienka (Movistar Team), Steven Kruijswijk and Luis León Sánchez (Rabobank Cycling Team), Igor Antón (Euskaltel - Euskadi), Richie Porte (Saxo Bank SunGard), and Stefano Garzelli (Acqua & Sapone) were in this group.

Pozzovivo came in 1'09 down, along with Ivan Basso (Liquigas - Cannondale), Michele Scarponi (Lampre - ISD), and John Gadret (AG2R La Mondiale).

Further back, finishing 1'38 later was Ezequiel Mosquera (Vacansoleil - DCM Pro Cycling Team) while José Rujano (Androni Giocattoli) lost 2'44.

Three riders crashed out due to injuries. The ever unlucky Christian Vande Velde (Team Garmin - Cervélo), who was in 22nd, abandoned with a broken collarbone. Sitting in 29th, Francesco Masciarelli (Pro Team Astana) left with a broken hand, while Maarten Wynants (Rabobank Cycling Team) couldn't continue with a broken wrist.

Giro d'Italia: Stage 9

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/179.jpg

Messina - Etna: 159.0km

Two ascents of Mt. Etna, the most active volcano in Europe, make today's stage one of the highlights of this year's Giro. Initially, many thought Vincenzo Nibali would be included in Liquigas' line-up, specifically for today. While their team plans have changed, today will be a challenge for all the riders.

The peloton will climb the volcano twice, first from Rifugio Citelli side, then from the Rigugio Sapienza side. Either way, the climbs are long, 28.4km and 24.4km respectively. Not a steep climb, they will sap energy from any struggling riders.

Colnago thought about sending Filippo Savini into the breakaway to try to get some KOM points. However, with only one point before the finish, the team thought it was wiser to keep him in the peloton to support Domenico Pozzovivo.

In his absence, a large breakaway formed, no one able to threaten his jersey. They were Martin Velits (HTC - Highroad), Alexander Mironov (Katusha Team), Riccardo Chiarini (Androni Giocattoli), Tanel Kangert (Pro Team Astana), Guillaume Bonnaford and David Le Lay (AG2R La Mondiale), Chris Froome (Sky ProCycling), David Tanner (Saxo Bank SunGard), Sven Vandousselaere (Omega Pharma - Lotto), Marcello Pavarin (Vacansoleil - DCM Pro Cycling Team), Jack Bobridge (Team Garmin - Cervélo), Gert Steegmans (Quick·Step Cycling Team), and Alessandro Bisolti (Farnese Vini - Neri Sottoli).

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/279.jpg
The breakaway, preparing for its first ascent of Etna.

At the foot of the first climb, Tiago Machado (Team RadioShack) and José Serpa (Androni Giocattoli) broke away from the peloton, trying to bridge up to the breakaway. They currently sit in 44th and 54th respectively.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/280.jpg
Machado and Serpa hope to improve their GC positions with a daring move.

Another rider a bit off the pace launched a several move a couple of kilometers later. Danilo Di Luca (Katusha Team) seemed to like their tactic.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/281.jpg
Di Luca has been a bit off the pace so far.

While the peloton took a relaxed pace up the climb, Machado and Serpa climbed with purpose. Di Luca did not reach them, and never completed his move. He finished in 24th on the day.

Machado and Serpa were able to reach the breakaway on the slopes of Etna. They weren't content with the pace the break was going at, and immediately took over the pace setting. Unsurprisingly, most of the group couldn't maintain this pace.

Serpa led the leading group over Etna. They had a lead of 7'31 over the peloton. With Serpa was Machado, Froome, Bisolti, and Chiarini. Kangert was 32" behind while Di Luca was a further 59" behind.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/282.jpg
The leading group goes over Etna for the first time.

The leading group went through the sprint point in Acireale with most of their lead intact; it sat at 7'08.

No team was chasing in the peloton. Colnago saw this as a dangerous opportunity to let riders make-up time and went the front of the group.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/283.jpg
Savini and Stefano Pirazzi setting the pace.

As the all the riders began the second ascent of Etna, Colnago's work was having an impact on the advantage. Simone Stortoni took the front once the climb truly began. He soon strung out the group. As he moved on, the bad luck continued for José Rujano (Androni Giocattoli). He suffered a puncture at the foot of the climb and had to wait for his team car. With Serpa and Chiarini up the road, the Venezuelan climber was isolated. He climbed fast, but still lost vital time.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/284.jpg
Stortoni at the front.

With 14km to go, the peloton was coming. Bisolti and Machado attacked their companions.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/285.jpg
Bisolti and Machado attack.

Only Serpa was able to close down the move, as the three riders now represented the leading riders on the road. With the possibility of a stage win, the three needed to work together.

Almost at the same spot on the road, Ivan Basso (Liquigas - Cannondale) and Peter Velits (HTC - Highroad) attacked.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/286.jpg
Far out, Basso and Velits go.

This move surprised the peloton, given the distance left until the line. No one else went with this move and everyone was scrambling to react.

Up ahead, Bisolti had been dropped by Machado and Serpa. The two had upped their pace shortly after Basso attacked. They clearly knew from race radio that Basso was coming.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/287.jpg
Machado and Serpa have ridden together almost all day.

While the break knew Basso was coming, the peloton knew he had left. Most of the GC riders had lost their teammates, so the responsibility of chasing him down fell on their shoulders. Not an easy task. Luis León Sánchez (Rabobank Cycling Team) and Pozzovivo were at the front of these efforts. The chasing group was made up of around 20 riders.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/288.jpg
The chasing group.

Basso kept chugging up Etna. Velits was not doing any work and just trying to hang onto the Italian's wheel.

The pace was too much for the young Slovakian. He had miscalculated his strength and was dropped by Basso.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/289.jpg
Velits made a mistake by trying to go with Basso.

The chasing group wasn't making up ground on Basso who had by now settled into a rhythm. Pozzovivo wasn't satisfied with some of the riders, including big favorites, not helping in setting the pace. He attacked the chase group.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/290.jpg
Pozzovivo attacks, hoping to spur some action.

As Pozzovivo accelerated, up the road, Basso reached the two leading riders. For much of the day, it looked as if Machado and Serpa would fight it out for the stage victory; now, they would just try to hang onto the Basso Express.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/291.jpg
Basso continues his assault of Etna.

No sooner had he made the junction, Basso dropped Machado.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/292.jpg
Now only Serpa stands in the way of a resounding Basso win.

Back in the chase group, Pozzovivo didn't get separation with his attack. He did force a selection however. 8 other riders were with him; Ezequiel Mosquera (Vacansoleil - DCM Pro Cycling Team), Igor Antón (Euskaltel - Euskadi), Michele Scarponi (Lampre - ISD), Vasil Kiryienka (Movistar Team), Steven Kruijswijk and Luis León Sánchez (Rabobank Cycling Team), Giampaolo Caruso (Katusha Team), and Velits, whom they had picked up.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/293.jpg
The smaller chase group.

Not far from the finish, Basso finally cracked Serpa. The Colombian had hung on for a while. He never looked a danger to Basso, but maybe he could make it to the line with the dominant rider; cruelly, this was not the case.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/294.jpg
Serpa is dropped, a great ride.

The chasing group split just before the flamme rouge. Pressure from Mosquera was too much for everyone. The Spaniard began to ride away from the group. He could not catch Basso or Serpa, but managed to pass an exhausted Machado.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/295.jpg
Mosquera, who did no work on the day, moves away in the final kilometer.

Mosquera's move split the chase group. Pozzovivo, Antón, Scarponi, Kiryienka, and Kruijswijk moved ahead of the rest, crossing the line with Machado.

Behind them came Caruso, Sánchez, and Velits.

But the day belonged to Basso, who crossed the line 1'14 ahead of Serpa.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/296.jpg
Basso was unbeatable today.

Basso's move saw him easily take over the race lead. A two time winner, he will not be unaccustomed to the pressure that comes with wearing the maglia rosa.

Kiryienka moves down to 2nd, 1'43 off the pace, while Antón is in 3rd at 1'51.

Mosquera made up nearly half a minute on his other rivals, and is now 3'32 behind. Moving into 5th is Pozzovivo at 4'10. Four seconds behind him is Scarponi.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/297.jpg
Basso is all smiles in pink.

Giro d'Italia: Stage 10

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/180.jpg

Termoli - Teramo: 158.2km

After the first rest day, and a transfer back to the mainland, the sprinters will get another chance for glory. With 11 stages left, this is likely their penultimate chance for a win.

After spending much of the first period on the Tyrrhenian coast, the day starts in Termoli, on the Adriatic coast. The peloton will now head north, towards the Alps. There is a long, steady climb up to the line in Teramo, however, it is nothing that should trouble the sprinters, especially after a day off.

There weren't very many riders willing to break from the safety of the peloton today. Colnago had decided to allow its riders have an "easy" day and remain in the peloton. So far, the team has been very visible, justifying its inclusion. Domenico Pozzovivo lies in 5th in the overall GC, Filippo Savini has worn the maglia verde since Stage 8, and they have been the impetus of numerous breaks.

The riders in today's break were Alberto Ongarato (Vacansoleil - DCM Pro Cycling Team), Karsten Kroon (BMC Racing Team), and Zdenek Stybar (Quick·Step Cycling Team).

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/298.jpg
The trio in the break.

The three built up a decent enough lead, but were never going to stay away from the peloton. The day would be without drama and much excitement; a mass sprint was coming.

Team Garmin - Cervélo were the best at organizing a sprint train as they tried to work for Tyler Farrar. Sacha Modolo didn't have good legs today and was poorly positioned as the sprint began. He tried to jump from wheel to wheel, but ultimately crossed the line in 15th.

Julian Dean (Team Garmin - Cervélo) pulled off the front and Murilo Fischer started the lead-out. All the big sprinters were in a line behind the Brazilian and Farrar.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/299.jpg
The lead-out train.

Having the benefit of teammates, Farrar opened up strongly and looked like he was heading towards his second stage win. Around the final bend, the finish line was seen.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/300.jpg
Farrar leads with the line in sight.

However, wily veteran, Alessandro Petacchi (Lampre - ISD) had timed his move to perfection. Showing he still has world class speed, Ale Jet rocketed out of Farrar's wheel to take the win by a tire.

All the GC contenders stayed out of trouble.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/301.jpg
Petacchi wins after a perfectly timed sprint.

Giro d'Italia: Stage 11

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/181.jpg

Tortoreto Lido - Castefidardo: 148.9km

A shark-tooth profile, today's up and down day will wear on the riders. Again, the riders hug the Adriatic coast, traveling north and tackling the lumpy course from Tortoreto Lido to Castefidardo.

A break got away in the early stages of the day. Filippo Savini probably should have tried to make the move, but instead, allowed teammate Marco Frapporti to have a go.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/302.jpg
Frapporti instigating the break.

Joining Frapporti was Murilo Fischer (Team Garmin - Cervélo), Karsten Kroon (BMC Racing Team), Oscar Gatto (Farnese Vini - Neri Sottoli), Sven Vandousselaere (Katusha Team), Joost Posthuma (Leopard Trek), Baden Cooke (Saxo Bank SunGard), Mirco Lorenzetto (Pro Team Astana), Matteo Montaguti and Mikaël Chérel (AG2R La Mondiale).

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/303.jpg
A lot of familiar names in the breakaway group.

The large group contained many of the Giro's frequent attackers, and thus, they all knew how to work well together. 57km in, at the first mountain sprint, their lead was 4'59; 16km later, it had grown to 7'34.

The peloton were not going to fight the break.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/304.jpg
Liquigas, leisurely controlled the peloton today.

With Liquigas not willing to work, the duty fell to the other teams. With many having a rider in the break, the peloton was content letting them ride away.

Throughout the day, Fischer made sure to win the mountain sprints, gaining 12 on the day. Savini still leads that competition.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/305.jpg
Fischer was very active getting KOM points.

The break worked well for the rest of the day, but there was always a lot of nervous eyes, as the riders knew they would be fighting it out for the stage win.

It remained calm over the penultimate climb.

With 10km to go, Posthuma launched the first attack.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/306.jpg
Posthuma attacks on a small descent.

The Dutch rider got a gap of around 15" which he held until 4km to go.

The only difficulty left was a small climb into the line in Castefidardo. Feeling good, Frapporti attacked on the flat, just before the final rise.

Frapporti goes for the win.

The Italian's attack put most of the group into serious trouble. Chérel, Vandousselaere, Kroon, Cooke, Montaguti, and Posthuma were all shed.

As Frapporti reached the climb, Gatto was leading a group of himself, Fischer, and Lorenzetto.

In the final kilometer, Frapporti was stalling. Sensing he had to go, Gatto dropped his two companions and made the bridge up to the Colnago rider.

The two would sprint for the win.

Gatto catches Frapporti.

In the end, the sprint was not much of a contest. Gatto moved from Frapporti's wheel and shot past the slowing rider to take the win. Frapporti settled for second. It was the best result for a Colnago rider so far in the Giro, but it likely could've been a stage win had he waited a little longer to attack.

When the peloton came into the line, Ivan Basso (Liquigas - Cannondale) and Giovanni Visconti (Farnese Vini - Neri Sottoli) attacked. The two held off the rest of the peloton, gaining 10 seconds on the rest of the field. Fabian Wegmann (Leopard Treak) led the peloton in, exactly 12'00 after Gatto.

The joy from Basso's small time gain was tempered by the news his teammate, Juraj Sagan had withdrawn due to a sprained wrist.

Gatto has time to celebrate his win; he had time to shower before watching the peloton cross the line.

The best result this Giro so far for Colnago, too bad you couldn't win but maybe in a latter stage?

@ Pellizotti2, Spilak23, baia, and dienblad: Thanks! I hope I can get a stage in the last week, but it'll be hard in the mountains.

@ beagle and FreitasPCM: Yeah, I was originally really surprised as it isn't something I'm going for. If I can keep getting into successful breaks like yesterday, maybe I can keep it.

@ kitface: Thanks. No worries on the comments. I don't comment much on other people's stories, although I read all of them. I was sad to see Tim go. Hopefully Pierre will be just as good!

Giro d'Italia: Stage 12

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/182.jpg

Castefidardo - Ravenna: 184.4km

Tirreno-Adriatico is "the race of the two seas," but thus far, the Giro has been hugging both coast lines as it traces the shape of the Italian peninsula. Another coastal stage, today is the last chance for the sprinters to make an impact on this year's Giro d'Italia. With 9 more stages left, there is speculation that many will drop out of the race after today.

The peloton departs from Castefidardo and will head north to Ravenna. The ancient city sees the race again return to Emilia-Romagna, Colnago's backyard.

On a pan flat day, Colnago opted to not send a rider in the breakaway. Their focus would be on delivering Sacha Modolo and/or Manuel Belletti to the line, and keeping Domenico Pozzovivo safe.

A group of 10 riders headed up the road. The composition of the group once again included familiar names; former race leader Dennis Van Winden (Rabobank Cycling Team), Kurt-Asle Arvesen (Sky ProCycling), Geoffroy Lequatre (Team RadioShack), Assan Bazayev (Pro Team Astana), Matteo Tosatto (Saxo Bank SunGard), Davide Malacarne (Quick·Step Cycling Team), David Le Lay (AG2R La Mondiale), Emanuele Vona (Farnese Vini - Neri Sottoli), Davide Viganò (Leopard Trek), and Marco Marcato (Vacansoleil - DCM Pro Cycling).

The breakaway hugs the Adriatic coastline.

The peloton was making a leisurely pace in the first half of the race. However, after a while, the lead had grown to around 15 minutes. As the riders looked to sprinter teams like Garmin - Cervélo, Omega Pharma, and Lampre, they saw no action.

Not wanting the last chance for the sprinter's to go to waste, Colnago got the front of the peloton.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/312.jpg
Colnago working when no one else was willing.

When Colnago moved to the front, the breakaway had a 14'54 advantage with 100km to go. With 70km to go, their lead had been cut to 8'37. Yet still, no one wanted to aid Colnago.

The team made a decision to not work alone for the rest of the peloton's benefit. Had other team's contributed, Colnago would've kept working.

One of the flattest stages in recent Giro memory would go to a breakaway.

When Colnago pulled off the front, the break's lead started to grow again. Only very late in the race did the peloton speed up, but by that time, any chance of catching the lead group had disappeared.

With 11km to go, Malacarne attacked the group. Going with him was Tosatto and Le Lay.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/313.jpg
Malacarne with Le Lay in his wheel; Tosatto just behind.

The three riders made a gap of around 25" over the rest of the break group. They worked hard together to maintain this advantage.

With 4km left, Le Lay attacked.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Colnago/314.jpg
Le Lay goes for the win.

AG2R have been extremely active in the breakaways, but have yet to been rewarded. Le Lay's late attack initially created good separation, but under the flamme rouge, Tosatto and Malacarne had battled back to his wheel.

A sprint between the three settled the day.

Exahusted from his attack, Le Lay faded in the final kilometer. The man in his wheel, Tosatto, used his slipstream to blast past him to take the stage win.

The peloton came in well over 6 minutes later. Tyler Farrar (Team Garmin - Cervélo) led the group in. Surely his team should've worked so he could win, instead of mopping up minor places.
