[PCT] Ekoi | April Preview

Welcome to the HQ of the biggest French team in the MGUCI universe – at least for the moment. After a rather surprising promotion in 2023 we were able to keep our spot in PCT in 2024 after finishing rock solid in mid-table without ever getting into relegation danger. If we achieve the same this season while further developing our riders everything goes according to our team philosophy.

Once we entered the MGUCI stage in 2022 we made it clear we were here to stay in the long term. And so we already signed a bunch of talents in our rookie season, most of whom are still with us after finally finishing their development in the past off-season. But they’re not alone as we made it a central part of the team philosophy to sign and develop talents – preferably French ones, but we don’t discriminate there and are (and were) home to talents from many countries and continents. Part of this philosophy is also to help other teams in developing their riders, resulting in a constant flow of loan-ins over the years.

Overall most of our plans are long-term, so we usually also look for younger team leaders who can help us for multiple seasons and could also be further developed once we find the funds to do so – while at the same time allowing us to plan for the year(s) to come without having to chase new leaders every transfer season, focusing on strengthening our weaknesses instead. But we also keep a look at the immediate future because relegation would be disastrous for our ability to sign the kind of talents needed to rise even further in the future. So more experienced riders in the autumn of their career are also welcome to support our season goals as well as mentor our many talents by sharing their huge amount of experience.

We aim to be competitive in all kind of races and terrains, not only because it is a good way to repay the investments of our sponsors by TV time as well as results, but also because it’s more fun for the riders, the fans and not the least the management to follow the races if there is something in it for us – and also it has shown to be a good way to accumulate the points needed for a successful season. But nonetheless we have our favourite terrains: we love the classics (especially the cobbled ones) for their unpredictability and the classic stage races for the variability of riders they address. On the other hand flat races and TTs are a necessary evil – at least until we finally are able to sign some specialists for them.

Le Creuset was our solitary main sponsor in our inaugural season and was joined by Ekoi a year later. Our set of sponsors has been stable ever since and probably will be in the future as well, as all our partners know about the team’s long-term approach and approve and support it – something especially French sponsors are known for in professional cycling, representing a tradition of decades-long funding of teams.

As a French team it’s no surprise we not only have French main sponsors, but also use the knowledge and experience acquired by the manufacturers of a country with such a long and thriving tradition in cycling as far as possible.

main sponsors: Ekoi (equipment & jerseys)
Le Creuset
secondary sponsors: Lapierre (frames)
Corima (wheels)
Shimano (components)
Renault (logistics)
fi’zi:k (saddles)

We entered renewals with some clear ideas on who we want to keep in the team and who won’t get a new contract, leaving us in doubt only with some domestiques. We decided to adapt the strategy for them on the way.

Captains:
These five riders were our main leaders and point scorers last season, so they also were the key players of the renewals (apart from our talents).
We were able to keep APP on his old wage and that’s clearly good news. Maybe we would have been able to even reduce his wage, but we didn’t want to test this out.
Ranaweera got an increase after a good season, but it’s been a small one and on a wage of 250,000 he should still be good value for his money.
Daniel got an offer from us, but weren’t surprised he really didn’t like it. So we decided to part ways for now.
Hodeg was on a low wage and his good results got him an increase of 35,000 in the end. There are some sprinters available in FA, but we clearly prefer not to rely on signing one of them while still having the opportunity to get in the mix.
Oliveira got a similar raise, which wasn’t what we hoped for. But especially with similar riders like Demare declining or Lagane going back to CT we thought he could do even better next season.

Youngsters:
With four of our youngsters maxing we couldn’t hope to keep their wages at the minimum. And we had to live with some serious raises there: All four rode for minimum wage last season, but Boileau, Garibian and Louvel all ended around a wage of 100,000 for next season. At least Delbove was content with staying on his old wage.
Even more important were the renewals of Vauquelin and Lapeira. We hoped for some potential for cuts with them and we actually got them.
We also were able to re-sign Costiou, Berhe and Askey with no changes in their wages. That wasn’t a surprise for the former two as they were on minimum wage anyway, but Askey wasn’t willing to reduce his 90,000 wage. But that’s actually fair enough after he was our 5th best scorer last season.
Juntunen was one of the riders we put on hold for the first rounds, but after the elongated negotiations with our maxing riders we finally decided to part ways with him. He’s still on our list as a potential late signing in transfers though.
Baudin is once again released after his second stagiaire season.

Domestiques:
After a good season our domestiques wanted their share of the cake too. We decided to part way with all of our declining riders, so we bid farewell to Chevrier, Dunne, Hadi and Pinot.
Mestric easily got a new contract after he agreed to ride on minimum wage. Paulus was our other main target in the supporting cast, but our wage ideas weren’t compatible in the end. Le Gac suffered from the same fate as Juntunen and is another victim of the numerous raises and didn’t get an offer from us in the end. Both puncheurs are still on our list if they don’t find another team in FA though.

Conclusion:
Overall we can well live with the results of the renewals as we were able to renew all crucial riders while still starting transfers with a cap space of 930,000, which should give us quite some room to improve our squad.

clearly available

These riders are clearly available for a decent offer, though we are not forced to sell anybody (yet) and will happily keep them with us if needed. In any case cash offers are preferred here.

FLMOMMHITTSTRSRCCBSPACFGDHPRXPAge Wage
Joris Delbove65767574586773756260717372584.10025 50.000
Alvaro Hodeg72535965676974705179785364734.10029 125.000
Rui Oli-veira70677276707772726675786567714.10029 140.000

Delbove wasn’t able to show himself too much yet as he just finished his development. But he could be nice break-away or KoM option for the lower divisions if he gets the opportunity to ride for himself, especially as he’s on minimum wage.

Hodeg proved to be a good sprinter able to get results even without a sprint train last season (including a PTHC stage win and two more PTHC stage podiums and a C1 classics podium), accumulating more than 200 points in PCT last season. In addition he’s only 29 years old and on a reasonable wage, so he should be a nice option for teams with a South American focus.

Oliveira is a hilly sprinter who also has a decent TT stat. He nearly scored 200 points last season in PCT (not including a 2nd place in a wildcard race in PT) and is also only 29 years old and on a decent wage. With the plethora of hilly classics and stage races available for all divisions he’s a good option as secondary leader, stage hunter or just domestique.

probably available

These talents are planned to stay with the team, but could leave us if a really good cash or trade offer occurs.

FLMOMMHITTSTRSRCCBSPACFGDHPRXPAge Wage

Welay Hagos Berhe68737271717370736061676864694.6524 50.000

Askey is on a 90k wage after already getting some big results last season (including a PTHC classic win from the break). He will max at 78 CO with decent back-up stats and should be easy to level up in every division.

Berhe is on minimum wage and though he won’t be a world beater he clearly will be a nice stage racing domestique, especially for the numerous African teams around. Even more so he can be maxed in all divisions (including CT), being at 4.65 already.

available depending on further developments

We don’t plan to sell or trade these riders, but maybe there’s an offer we can’t refuse or some need to free some cap space or generate some cash later in transfers, so stay in touch if you’re interested in one of them.

These riders are not available at all – at least as long as you don’t offer a younger, better, cheaper and preferably French version of them in return, probably with some cash on top.

Askey is a very interesting talent to potentially be available. I bet a bidding war could start if you were to bit the bullet on it.

Work to do to get comfortably PCT quality, but balanced by room to go and make some deals. I'm sure Ekoi will have another fine PCT season!

Don't really know why, but I would have expected Ranaweera to be available to make room for even more of that massive french talent pool Smile

Still a very very nice availability list. I was chasing Askey last year, but unfortunately couldn't make it happen. He could be a solid cash-cow. And if not this year, saving him for next year should do the trick.

With huge French names once again coming into free agency, I am interested to see if you will try to send it for a promotion push or secure yet another promising talent to the roster while staving off relegation.

I have spotted here also quiet some oportunities for us to agree on some deals in the future maybe Wink

@bbl
I won't object a bidding war on him, but maybe he could also be a nice asset for a trade deal as well (I have a very definite idea about a potential swap there).

@TMM
It's clear we need some more scorers to stay out of relegation danger, but I have a long list of riders who could serve this purpose and maybe 1 or 2 of them actually end up in the team (though probably I'll end up with riders never on my list like in the last seasons).
And the available cap space (hopefully even more improved by selling or trading riders) should allow for combining this with getting some more talents as well.

@SotD
Ranaweera was initially brought in because of his combination of age, wage and scoring potential which allows us to have room for bringing more talents in (as this year's class of French talents wasn't a secret to anyone Wink), so he's planned as one of our leaders for the next years too.
Also Askey was quite a bargain last season (including his unexpected big scoring), so good to hear (once again) he could turn out to be our joker in transfers.

@wj
With this year's French talents there's no doubt about the targets for transfers, because we will probably never see them available again. But it's clear we need some top-end riders too as well to allow us developing them in the next years.

@Ezee
I bet you have Wink

Looks like you have a pretty good idea of what direction you’re heading for the upcoming window, so good luck on executing that vision and balancing it with the scorers to keep you safe. Daniel was an unexpectedly solid leader so it’ll be interesting to see how/if you get him back or replace/pivot into a different focus. Looking forward to matching up against you for the first time!

Delbove looks like the perfect min wage Frenchie so surprised he's on the block.

There's a couple of names there I could see us talking about depending how my financial situation ends up looking.

Fabianski
Looks like you ended up in the same situation with Max Daniel as I did with Theuns - these old cobblers don't quite get when time has come to take a step back in the hierarchy ^^
Somewhat intriguing availability list, we'll see if I might have the opportunity to make an offer for one or two of these riders...
Good luck for transfers, but I guess it should be a pretty relaxed offseason for you with the great core that you already have! Last year was the crucial year to stay up, this year it's about consolidation - or even taking the next step?

I feel we are going to come head to head quite a few times in the future, but before we start you kind of have a team like what I aspire to become with my project. Lots of great French riders. Some interesting riders available aswell, even though I heard Vauquelin say he would love a new Peugeot...

I think we are going to talk a lot in the coming years Grin

jandal7
Could be some possibilities to talk looking at that, even if the real jewels are apparently securely locked away - as well they should be!
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

That's a promising looking availability list, with some potentially very interesting names there...

Intrigued to see how you approach this transfers, in terms of finding the right balance between talents and building a squad strong enough to stay out of relegation danger. Suspect we'll end up in a few bidding wars with that in mind as we'll have similar objectives Pfft

redordead
I agree with what some others have said, there are quite a few interesting names available. I think you'll be able to make plenty of moves to reshape the team and open up space for the French talents Smile

Super, super curious to see how you prioritize this transfer seasons, seeing especially the two absolute world class talents from France. As you say above, they might never be available again. If you decide to go all in for both, I am definitely sure there will be a lot more riders available in your team than those you have listed Pfft
