Tour of East Java
2.PTHCStages: | | Pts | KoM | 01. | Yogyakarta - Yogyakarta (96 km) | 31 | 10 | 02. | Kuta - Mataram (120 km) | 37 | 11 | 03. | Mataram - Mt Rinjani (207 km) | 18 | 38 | 04. | Mataram Criterium (129 km) | 37 | 0 |
The Tour of East Java has developed quite a lengthy history since it first appeared on the calendar all the way back in 2013. It was initially envisioned as a three-day race for the puncheurs: hence it was Allan Davis who secured the inaugural edition. A one year absence followed before the organisers, evidently uncertain of the financial sustainability of the initial model, returned with a two-day race featuring one stage for the sprinters and one stage for the climbers. Funnily enough, neither was located in East Java! This is the third edition of the current four-day format, which includes two new sprint stages in addition to reprofiles of the prexisting duo. The riders will spend a day in Java, although not the island's eastern section, before a short flight to Lombok, where they will finish out the race. The Queen stage is obviously the ride from Mataram to Mt Rinjani: the climb to Bukit Kondo (15km @ 8.0%) will decide the polkadots and weed out the weaker riders before the overall competition is finalised in the ascent to Mt Rinjani's viewpoint (3.5km @ 8.9%). The short parcours of the three flat stages mean there is the potential for a breakaway victory; Gasper KATRASNIK will doubtlessly be hoping to repeat his heroics from last year.
It has hard to look past Pierre-Henri LECUISINIER when it comes to favourites for the GC. His closest competitor will probably be Joseph DOMBROWSKI but, although the American did score one over his counterpart in Liechtenstein, the way he was dominated in Colombia suggests that he might not be up to scratch. The other rider that might edge into the conversation is Tadej POGACAR. He was also in Liechtenstein, where there isn't a huge amount to read from a conservative ride into the Top 10, but he was extremely impressive at Paris - Nice, which he won by more than a minute. Still, I think that LECUISINIER is a shoe-in to repeat HERKLOTZ's feat of back-to-back victories. There are also a number of riders who will be scrapping it out for the remaining positions in the Top 5 or, if conditions permit, might be capable of taking victory with a sneak attack. This includes a declining Tim WELLENS, ProContinental hopeful Adam YATES, Pierre LATOUR as the other Frenchman, a thus-far-disappointing Mark PADUN, superdomestique MAL, and Daan OLIVIER.
Whilst the overall competition might be relatively easy to make predictions about, the same can never be said about sprint competitions. Honestly, you might as well throw a dart from the top of a cliff whilst wearing a blindfold; that is a process that is just as likely to select the winner as anything involving rational thought. Nonetheless, we might look at big wigs such as Dylan GROENEWEGEN, Rick ZABEL and Jasper PHILIPSEN to set the standard. Given KATRASNIK will have to compete with Nicolay CHERKASOV and Torkil VEYHE, the sprinters should have three opportunities to take the win. Provided nothing goes horribly wrong that is.

A rare Aranburu mountain leadership as Carthy and Galta had to be elsewhere. The hope is no TT at least puts him and Gregaard in competition for minor placings. Not much to get beyond that.
Hope AKA can do something soon in his waning maxed race days, just for old times sake.
Edit: Aranburu is dead to me. Gregaard all the way.

Olivier is back leading our mountain squad with what we feel like is good enough support for the single mountain stage. Kulikovskiy is also here for the three sprint stages. Hopefully both of them can continue their good recent form.
Thanks for the preview

Everything less than a GC victory would feel like a massive disappointment with the lineup we sent here. Stacking Lecuisinier and Lopez seems like a massive gamble anyway ...
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Felt like this race could fit Yates, that if a group of elite riders go over the big climb together then his punchyness will help on the ride to the finish. Not expecting a win but somehting well inside the top 10 would be nice.
Thanks for the preview. When we rebuilt the stages, we considered renaming it the Tour of Lombok but didn't bother, feel better now I know it was never in East Java.

Wellens can try to fight for the top area. Likely something between 5th to 10th is realistic and maybe Bauhaus can show himself on the flat stages.
Not many expectations but hopefully at least a couple small points. |

We've got a couple of shots at a decent placement but we know we've got nothing to match the big guns here

Just as sammy, I don't get my hopes too much up here.
Maybe Enger can fight for a podium on one of the sprint stages if we're lucky?
Thank you for the preview liefwarrior, appreciate it! |

Always thought of me ruining the geographic ‘factoids’ of the stages, but didnt really think it matter all too much so funny to see this in the preview
Weakest team we’ve ever went to our home race here - no GC rider since one of the earlier editions where we won a stage with Matt Goss. Hopefully history repeats itself and local legend Nur Hasan can bring home a stage in front of his home crowd
Hard to look past big PHL here, but I’m on the Yates train baby

Hoping AHJ gets a chance to race on stage 3 and thus be in contention for the white jersey and a GC top 20. Based on Colombia, he is very capable if he is on the right day.
Though, we’re clearly here for Groenewegen and the sprints. Really hope we can get it right here and get back to winning ways! |

Thanks for the preview, lief!
We're hoping for a Top 15 result from Ranaweera and maybe some depth scoring from Pinot. And Hodeg is here in the hope for his PTHC sprint form. The rest of tge squad consists of our cobblers who had lots of RD left and can go for the breaks here or help Hodeg in the sprints.

What a messy stage, this race is made for flat stage shenanigans. Thanks to lief for covering it and congrats to Blasing for winning in the lottery today!
Hodeg in 12th is in the expected range, though he wasn't seen near the front during the splits. At least it's s.t. for everyone in the end, but Ranaweera has to be better positioned in the next stages.

18th by Enger, okay... Surely he must be severly jet lagged by the Indonesia-trip.
If this is his race form, we might as well just abandon the rest of the race.
Thank you liefwarrior btw, for a terrific report! |

Really thought Van Den Berg had that sprint in the bag, but this result is a nice surprise anyway so I'll take at it comes with second for a day in all classifications as well.

Damn, perfect sprint by AKA lost to the breakaway. Obviously a podium is still great, but the chance to win a stage and hold the keader's jersey would have been really nice. Surprised they were able to hold on.
Congrats to Blasing!
