[HC] Giro dell’Emilia
Welcome to the 9th edition of the Giro dell’Emilia.
The race is a hilly classic as all the final day races are. After a flat start and a middle part with quite some short and steep climbs to exhaust the legs before entering a circuit where the riders will have 4 laps up and down before the final climb.
The race is traditionally decided by sprints of small groups or even solo rides. Damiano Cunego is the only rider who won here two times although the race is part of the MGUCI calendar since 2009. There are quite some previous winners at the start to get on par with the Italian: Beltran, Benoot, Kelderman and Prevar. And at least the first three of those should actually be in the mix for this year’s win.
Previous winners:

2022 results:

The startlist sees the PCT teams as the major contenders with 19 of them at the start in comparison to only 5 CT teams. The puncheurs should be the biggest contenders, but it’s hard to say if the hybrids are better suited for the course than the purer puncheurs.

Would love to end the season on a high note, but that's unlikely to happen. Even if Izagirre shows up on the list of favorites, I assume Ndayisenga is probably our best shot. If he makes it to the final climb in a decent position, he could place well, but typically for us in these races, positioning is what holds us back. So, we find ourselves rather in the position to hope that our rivals don't do too well, specifically that Benoot doesn't win, which I never like to do, but here we are.
Areruya is the obvious top favorite, but I would love to see a success for one of the teams near the bottom of the table, like Bobridge to end the season for Spark in a conciliatory way, or Waeytens doing well for Trans. Not sure how likely that is, but we'll see.
Good luck everyone!

Would be awesome for Kelderman to finish our season on a high but with the absolute cheatcode that Arureya is it’ll be difficult. Sucks to put it this way, but we simply just have to outscore Zwift here and the rest is gucci. Good luck to everyone involved!

Would love to see a breakaway win, otherwise we won't have a chance here. Profile fits Gesbert or Areruya perfectly, will be an interesting race!

We've done well here last season, so it would be good to do that again! Some top 20 maybe, if the race isn't too hard.
Good luck everyone, thanks for the preview.

Turgis and Meurisse are here to protect our top 10 placement, but I fear that might not be possible, thanks for the preview!

Lots to digest!
#1 - Thanks for the nice report kb, and for all the great reports you did throughout the season!
#2 - Ion Izagirre, not all that bad! I mean, 21st gives us 5 points, but still, that might be his best hilly classic result of the year. Not great from the rest of the group, but honestly anything above a 0 pointer is nice.
#3 - Congrats to Xero! What a spectacular campaign by Areruya (wonderful to see from a Rwandan cycling standpoint), surely among the most dominant individual PCT seasons ever?
#4 - Congrats to Assa Abloy! With Chaves in the Top 30, I believe that 6th place for Gesbert would've meant that they'd have been tied with Indosat, now they promote by 8 points, what a nailbiter. At the same time, comiserations to Eden, although promotion might of course still be possible through disbandments.
#5 - Will it be possible for 7th place, too? Who knows (and tbf, let's hope not), but good to keep that 7th place anyway thanks to Areruya and Buchman besting Benoot. Considering my (perhaps a little pessimistic) preseason outlook, this has been a wildly successful season for us.
A full review of the season will come in the HQ in due time. For now, I'll leave another big thank you here for everyone who kept this game running for another season, from organisation to reporters to managers. What a privilige to be in this with y'all

Thanks for the report!
Beltran and Buchmann both in the top 4 with Turgis missing top 10 is by far the worst case scenario for us, always love setting moderate goals and then going 0/5!
Thanks for the season!

Big relief to see Gesbert cross the line in 5th! He has a tendency sometimes to burn himself out with early attacks, but thankfully he saved his powers for the deciding climb this time. Great effort by Chaves too who helped chase and protect Gesbert while managing a fine result himself.
Have to say I feel for Eden, with the split on the final stage in Tour of Japan affecting Yates and turning out to be decisive for the promotion race. Knowing I had the same thing happen to Gonzales Salas in Arab Tour, I would sure have been annoyed had those points meant we missed out on promotion.. Hopefully a space opens up for you in the upcoming weeks
Thank you for the great report kb and big congrats to Xero! Areruya is a beast

Sucks to have been proven wrong about Reis and Wilco. 3 million badly spent let me tell you that. We need a serious rebuild. But a heavy burden falls from my shoulder by securing safety. One more year PT! Congrats to Xero. Arureya is a legitimate beast!
Thanks for another great report, your work has been amazing this season. See you next year fellas! Colombini will be back!

PCT spot secured, now we can concentrate on what truly matters - building Lithuanian led team. Thats all this season was about, just to survive a year

Areruya finishes his beastly season how he started it, and secures promotion after carrying our otherwise underperforming team all year. Even if it wasn't high drama where we needed to win or else, it is still cool to secure it like this
Will wait for the final rankings thread so I don't end up repeating myself a lot, but for now congratulations to those who got what they needed here, and commiserations to those who didn't. Thanks kandes for the report of course!
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

One more great result for Beltran in Emilia, love it!

I'm rather surprised that the team elected Kron as the designated leader. The fact that the finishing circuit encompassed a semi-mountain seems more suitable to Schlegel's hybrid capabilities. On the other hand, having finally been unleashed to ride for himself, 11th place from Kron is nothing to scoff at. Maybe the fact that it wasn't perpetual gradients is more important? Either way, thank you for the report, congratulations to those who attained their aims, commiserations to those who didn't. What a great season it has been. |

From my own quick calculation and your write-up, I guess, you also see my team staying on 4th due to Vansevenant`s 8th here?
What to say, Vansevenant consistently in late top10s in the classics might have secured promotion alongside a strong Olivier and a up and down Groenewegen and Hooydonck.
It will be a tough off season as time is limited but tasks are big to make changes to the roster.
Congrats to Xero for that bold win here as also Assa Abloy to just move above the already finished Indosat in last minute.
Thanks to all reporters, who carried this season as also all managers, that were doing so much tasks over the off- and onseason. |
