The Greek Cycling Mythologi:
Cycling didn’t exactly start in ancient Greece, but that doesn’t mean that the mythologi is non-existing. Greece have their Heroes, their God’s and their warriors – And this is their story. The story of the biggest Greek achievements. Told by the man who has been in charge of the majority of the best the Greeks have ever seen.

It was a different time back then...
Spoiler
It was back in 2011, when the first Greek cyclist signed a professional contract at the worlds elite. The sprinting talent of Georgos Tzortzakis became the cycling God of Greece by a single stroke of a pen. Signing a contract with Pro Tour setup, Festina – Corona, only to be loaned out to the lower divisions immediately. The sole existence of the God was short lived, as the 2012 season also saw Panagiotis Vlatos sign at the Festina setup, now co-sponsored by Conec. One God became two – but neither was ready to shine their glory upon the biggest scene, and left the team for training their skills at the lower levels of cycling.

By many the future glory of Greek cycling was ignored entirely, but the two Gods sparked an immediate interest within the country, and by the start of 2013 a new record high (6) amount of Greek cyclist had found their way into the professional scene. Perikles Ilias and baby-brother of the first God, Polychonis Tzortzakis (The warriors), signed with other teams, while the Festina-setup adopted further two members of the Greek hero/warrior-assembly. The first hero (level just below gods) was Charalampas Kastrantas with Ioannis Tamouridis as a warrior. And while the Gods fared well in the valleys, the Hero started to rise into the hills and Greece started to expand. While Tzortzakis and Kastrantas kept working their strengths at lower level it was Tamouridis and Vlatos who became the first ever riders to ride a full Pro Tour season.

The shift from 2013 to 2014 saw some remarkable changes, that hit Greek cycling hard. Festina was in a dire economic situation, which lead Tamouridis to be the first Greek Warrior to leave the scene. The wages of Kastrantas couldn’t be covered by Festina, and he left to Gazelle at the Pro Continental Tour. What seemed to be a rise of Greek glory suddenly seemed like a program in dissolvement. The two God’s was still within the team, but there was massive work to be done to ensure that Greek cycling would evolve, rather than stop. The warriors, Ilias and P. Tzortzakis kept up the fight and played a vital role in the development of the history. In the midst of the Greek collapse, the brothers from Cyprus started to rise, and Athanasiades, Skettos and Adamou signed professional contracts at Privatbank and Euskaltel. While neither of them would ever move past the rank of Warriors, they did their time, and worked as motivation for the younger generation.

The downfall quickly turned into a genuine revolution. The first ever Greek cycling team formed at Continental level – Elta Hellenic Post gave home to many new (and old) warriors. Simantirakis, Gkazonis, Tamouridis, Ilias, Sakellaridis, A. Bouglas, G. Bouglas, Katrakis, Drakakis, Karatzios, Efstatiou and Volikakis joined forces to create a solid base for the future. From Cyprus also Skettos (brother) and Loizou joined. Due to the enhanced interest in Greek cycling, also warriors like Chatzakis found a home at Buff – Polska. Kastrantas had found his way back home to the Festina team which still housed the Gods of Tzortzakis and Vlatos. From the depths of doom to the rise of Greek as a true cycling nation The Elta – Hellenic Post team and the warriors of the past deserves a massive chant from the warriors of today! They changed the endgame in a way that no one saw coming!

The Elta – Hellenic team continued for another season, and further developed some of the riders we know today, such as Nikolaos Ioannidis and Georgios Karatzios. At the other end of the spectrum we saw fully developed top athletes like Vlatos, Tzortzakis and Kastrantas help win the Pro Tour division for Festina 3 years in a row, which put a massive interest in Greek cycling. Also the 2016 season saw one of the future Heroes rise from the dirt. Stylianos Farantakis signed with Compal-Merida, while Georgios Bouglas joined the World Cycling Centre to further spread the word of Greek cycling.

The one and only Greek cycling team folded by the end of 2016 leaving numerous Greek riders behind. Some was picked up, but most wasn’t. The legend of Neofytos Sakellaridis signed for Generali, while P. Tzortzakis kept fighting at different sides at PCT level. Youngster Farantakis had sparked and interest within the Festina setup who signed him on an august-november stagiare contract, to show his potential. The immediate stop of Elta – Hellenic Post did leave the talent development in ruins, however and only 1 Cypriot had contract in 2017 after a record high 4 in 2015. Likewise Greece had fallen from it’s glory days of 17 professional riders to now just 7. The level, however – Had increased drastically!

2018 became interesting for the sport due to the invention of amateur teams, that gave room for talents and misfits to prove themselves. This gave room for the talents of Ioannidis Kiriakidis and Cypriot Andreas Miltiadis to grow. It was also in 2018 the scouts of Festina had finally noticed that the leftovers of the now past Elta – Hellenic team, and the development sector of Greece was a diamond in the rough. In came Georgios Karatzios as one of the new Heroes as well as Warriors Nikolaos Ioannidis and Miltiadis Giannoutsos who was loaned out to develop them in a manor known by Vlatos and Tzortzakis. Cypriot Armanto Archimandritis game through on a short deal aswell. Other talents, such as Zisis Soulious and Anastasios Koumpetsos joined the warrior league of development aswell. For the first time since the abandoning of Elta – Hellenic Post we had a team who invested heavily in Greek cycling. And it was about time. One of the Gods, Georgios Tzortzakis turned 33 and his top end speed wasn’t what it used to be.

2019 sparked a full scale investment of professional Greek cycling, when the state offered the sporting university of OAKA a place alongside the name of Festina. After 2 years of negligent investment the Greek sporting department noticed a healthy development, and jumped the bandwagon to further enhance that. At this point the Festina – OAKA setup had a massive 10 Greeks and 1 Cypriot assigned, while 2 other Cypriots and 5 greeks had contracts elsewhere. The cycling God of Tzortzakis had stepped down after a huge career (likely the single most dominant Greek rider ever) to ride at Andorra Cycling Project. Aimiliano Vila, Michail Mavrikakis, Michail Kortsidakis and Ioannis Spanopoulos all became new contracted warriors, and in the meantime Charalampas Kastrantas had nearly grown from a Hero to a God, taking stagewins in Grand Tours, aswell as fighting for the KOM glory.

But this is all history, and the more modern days have shown that the Greek riders have evolved from Warriors into Gods, and even a single Titan - Panagiotis Vlatos have come to see the light of day. The Greek history is definately in the making, and in 10 years time, we will look back on the glory days of Greek cycling, which is now...

Vlatos is coming very close to becoming a titan, love to see it.

Seems like you have riders available from many places and continents. Looking forward to possibly talk during transfer concerning one of them Smile

We’re usually in contact and I’m sure that’ll be the same this time around. Although different given both of our teams situations.

The team is shaping up very nicely and I see you’ll have even more training money this season which is one step closer to the Greek God supremacy.

Probably the least surprising availability list in the entire MG this year Pfft

We never really deal with each other during transfers but always discuss a lot, so I assume it will be the same this year Smile

Overall the Greek/Cypriot setup is looking decent but a lot of training money needed to bring it into being a PT calibre team without the need for menecaries like Chiarello and the superstar in Bryan Coquard!

kandesbunzler26
Well that's a lot of Greek flags up there, though seemingly not enough yet.

Your French riders are probably out of my financial range (at least for what I'm planing), but maybe we could agree on some loaning in transfers.

Please change the flag beside Joel Yates Pfft

Really incredible work compiling the history of the Greek and Cypriot cycling legions through the MG, loved reading through it. Excited for Vlatos' ascension to Titan status, hopefully can be done this year despite the decline?

11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

@Nemolito
In fact, the numbers haven't been fully updated - The list of updates will come shortly Wink

Indeed, and I must admit there was a degree of strategy around the secondary picks I made Smile

@LLS
Absolutely. You have a super interesting team so there's always a good chance for some swaps - or purchases if you fancy some of my riders. Must admit I have a weak spot for Lafay in your direction as I think he would be a perfect fit.

Thanks a lot. Definately looking for more cash, as none of the greeks can carry the team of their own. Hopefully with a massive amount of training done this year and the next, the base is complete and I can begin the high end training that will make the team self-sufficient, so I only have to pick up talents for saledistribution. A lot will depend on how well Farantakis, Kiriakidis and Giannoutsos work though as they are the only really viable training solutions. I'd like to pump up Ioannidis and Kortsidakis aswell, but given the age of the former I'm not sure it's viable. He didn't perform well with his +2 statgain this season.

@whitejersey
True, not a lot of surprising elements in the availability list, except maybe that I'm not overly eager to sell Coquard Wink

I hope it will change at some point. If you feel like splashing some cash rather than training - I'm your go-to-guy Grin

Absolutely correct regarding the training cash. I think it's possible to cover Chiarello through trainings of f.e. Mavrikakis and Giannoutsos and maybe Spanopoulos - but I'm not sure it's a long terms viable solution to train Mavrikakis and Spanopoulos, eventhough I am heavily considering it (also depends on the cashflow obviously). Coquard can't be covered even if I invest in Farantakis 2 years in a row. I'll have to accept that he's forever a second tier sprinter - but hopefully a slightly better 2nd tier sprinter Smile

@kandesbunzler26
The amount of greek flags is somewhat sufficient. Combined with the Cypriots I have 19 before the beginning of the transfers, and then there's always the odd talent or two I'd like to invest in, but overall the amount is OK. The quality is the main issue Smile

I'm not sure the likes of Lafay and Morin is out of your league. Lafay can go into all divisions really, while Morin is probably a very handy CT level leader, or PCT lieutenaint. I don't have as much use for him with Vila leveling up now.

@jandal
Done. Didn't even know he wasn't from Australia Pfft - Atleast I did Kelly right Wink

Thanks a lot mate. Cleaned up the history post a bit, so it's a bit tidier and more read-friendly. Oh Vlatos is there! - Look out for the upcoming post!

Clash of the Titans?

Oh yes! We are there. Not in numbers though.

After a very poor first 3/4 of the season, Panagiotis Vlatos finally made it. By scoring 327 points, and thus making it 7 seasons in a row with +300 points, Vlatos shattered the roof of the God-barriers to make it the first ever Titan rider!

i.imgur.com/QWUSmn6.jpg

Behold the Titan:

Panagiotis Vlatos (2012-Present) 3107 points

Palmares:
Stagewin, Tour de France (2020)
2x Stagewin, Tour of Qatar (2016, 2019)
Stagewin, Tour de Suisse (2019)
Stagewin, Tour de Pologne (2019)
Stagewin, Tirreno-Adriatico (2018)
Yellow Jersey wearer, Tour de France (2020)
2nd and 6th GC, Praha – Karlovy Vary – Praha (2018, 2021)
3rd and 4th and 8th GC, Deutschland Tour (2021, 2020, 2018)
2x 5th, 6th and 2x 7th, Chronos des Herbiers (2022, 2021, 2017, 2018, 2016)
6th and 7th Chrono d’Arenberg (2022, 2021)
9th Tour of Qatar (2016)

4th PTS, Deutschland Tour (2018)
10th PTS, Praha - Karlovy Vary - Praha (2022)
6th U25 Tour of Qatar (2015)

Long team servant, Charalampas Kastrantas also made it into the history books, when he battled the Classique du Grand-Duché and took home a stunning 5th place. This made Kastrantas the 3rd Gods of all time, and after Vlatos' new title as a Titan, Kastrantas is now the sole rider to be at the level just below Titans together with former teammate and Superstar - Georgios Tzortzakis!

Behold the God:

Charalampas Kastrantas (2013-Present) 1622 points

Palmares:
Stagewin, Vuelta a España 2019
Stagewin, Criterium du Dauphine 2016
5th, Classique du Grand-Duché 2022
2nd place stage, Vuelta a España 2019
6th PTS, Vuelta a España 2019
8th U25, Deutschland Tour 2016

But it isn't just Vlatos and Kastrantas who made remarkable progress during the season. Prior to the season, the list of Heroes were limited to Kastrantas and Karatzios. And while Kastrantas has moved up a level, quite some riders have now joined Karatzios as Heroes of Greece!

10th, Scandinavian Open Road Race (2022)
10th, Tour of Lithuania (2022)
19th, Volta a Portugal (2022)
3rd stage, Volta a Portugal (2022)

A bit congratulations on making history to the abovementioned riders. In the season to come we are very eager to follow Michail Kortsidakis, Georgios Bouglas and Andreas Miltiadis whom with a repeat of last seasons performance, will be Heroes of Greek Cycling by the end if 2023. Only time will tell if they can make it! Also the likes of Aimiliano Vila and Georgios Stavrakakis has an outside chance of making it, if they create an amazing season.

Vlatos is still here to enhance his Titan level performance, and might be invulnerable despite his slow regress. With Karatzios also regressing it's unlikelt that we will see him achieve God-level, but the likes of Farantakis, Kiriakidis and Giannoutsos will definately be eager to fight for their chance to reach the top.

Beautiful list. It'll take a while for another rider to reach titan status, but there are certainly candidates on the roster, Farantakis and especially Giannoutsos probably first among them. As for the availabilities, obviously I can't not take a Rwandan rider at least into consideration. I'm sure we'll talk about it as transfers progress, and maybe even about another rider or two.

SotD
Would definately be a great fit to send him towards you Smile

I have an odd feeling that Kiriakidis is the best bet among the already maxed riders. He performs extremely well even before training. Vila could also quickly become a rider who scores 5-800 points pr. season with +2/3 HI.

Long term, I think my best option is Karatsivis. He's maxing at 25 and is training eligeble at 26. He's the more versatile copy of Giannoutsos.

Stavrakakis is another option, but he needs to perform well this season without training. Next season he could be 79COB, combined with a good FL and TT stat and not unreasonable HI. Also one of those that could become a regular +500 point scorer with limited training.

At this point i feel the actual riders on your team don't matter, as you always manage to put together planning amongst the very best in the game. That said, if Coquard did leave it'd feel very strange. I'm certain someone will make a good offer for Koretzky, still a quality option and nicely waged up!

I had some secret hopes I might be able to go all-in on Coquard, but after his great 2022 season he rightfully got a raise which makes it even more unrealistic that it already was anyway Wink
Instead, we'll surely be in touch discussing another potential target - and maybe some more loans of Greeks/Cypriots? Wink

Yeah the raise is fair, but not ideal when you are in a sales position Smile - I'd imagine he would still end up a fair bit lower than Gaviria in the FA market Grin

There should be some openings on greek loans absolutely. There's atleast 3 low level guys I'll be looking at, hopefully I can fit all 3 without too much of a hazzle.

The stars are looking for a new home!

Last week we showcased our availability list in total. This time we zoom in a bit on the biggest stars of the team, that is looking for a new home!

Bryan Coquard | 31 yo | 700.000€

Nat.NameFLMOHITTSTRSRCCBSPACFGDHPROVRAge
Bryan Coquard7359676571748456848360657979,5131

Bryan Coquard had an extraordinary season, last year winning both Ronde van Nederland, Riga - Jurmala aswell as 5 stages in Paris-Nice and Deutschland Tour. He also showed great strength to take 4th in Milano - San Remo, Tour of Qatar and GP Moscow. All in all, this put him in 10th PT Individual Rankings, and is among the top tier riders in the world.

In the past Coquard have top results in races like Tour of Qatar, GP Moscow, Milano-San Remo, Rund um Köln, Paris-Tours, Lisbon Classic, Tour d'Afrique, Lac Megantic Classic aswell as stagewins in numerous stageraces across the PT and PTHC division - A total of 25 wins across all seasons, including stages in the Vuelta a España.

Expected offer: 2.000.000€ - Can include rider swaps aswell!

Clement Koretzky | 33 yo | 275.000€

Nat.NameFLMOHITTSTRSRCCBSPACFGDHPROVRAge
Clement Koretzky7270806275686962707772696076,9733

The newly crowned French Champion has been showcasing immense strength from time to time, over the past seasons. He already started performing at a very young age, before even being fully developped and trained, when he landed 4th in Giro di Lombardia in 2015 to help his team win the Pro Tour. But even earlier he took two great stagewins in Volta a Catalunya and Tour of Qatar in 2014.

In the past Koretzky have top results in races like Liege-Bastogne-Liege, Giro di Lombardia, Fleche-Wallonne, Badaling International, Classique du Grand-Duché, GP Cyclistes, GP Wallonie, Strade Bianche aswell as a brilliant 2nd GC in last seasons Tour of Lithuania.

He has a total of 9 wins, and another 15 podiums to his tally and a long list of top 10's in very difficult races.

Last season wasn't his best ever when finishing 55th, the previous season, however had him on a record high 23rd place scoring well above 1.000 points. He even crossed 800 points before being trained to his ultimate stats.

Expected offer: 800.000€ - Can include rider swaps aswell!

William Chiarello | 32 yo | 230.000€

Nat.NameFLMOHITTSTRSRCCBSPACFGDHPROVRAge
William Chiarello7179757373747753637273697176,9932

William Chiarello has only had 1 season in the team, but what a marvellous year it was. Always agressive towards the front, claimed him a stagewin in the Vuelta a España, and another 3 GT stage podiums - 2nd in both Tour de France and Vuelta a España, and another 3rd place in the Tour de France. He crowned the efforts by finishing 8th in the GC in both races. Absolutely stunning for a rider waged 230K.

Overall, William Chiarello is Mr. Steady, which can be seen in his recordlist. In 3 consequtive seasons did he score 700-800 points in the individual rankings, to end up between 37-43rd. Also his list of Grand Tour performances is stunning!

Tour de France 2022: 8th GC 2nd and 3rd places stageresults
Tour de France 2021: 8th GC 1st and twice 2nd places stageresults
Tour de France 2020: 11th GC 1st and 2nd places stageresults
Vuelta a España 2022: 8th GC 1st and 2nd places stageresults
Giro d'Italia 2021: 7th GC
Giro d'Italia 2020: 7th GC

A total of 5 GC top 10s, 3 stagewins and 6 podiums in 3 seasons. Not many GC riders, even among the subtop tiers, can replicate this!

In his 2021 Tour de France he had 7 days in the GC top 3, ending after the final mountainstage on stage 19.

Coquard and Chiarello are the kind of riders who would be very interesting to a team like mine, if that team had any cap space. Looking forward to seeing what you manage to do this transfers, and what your training plans end up looking like!
