Welcome to the 5th edition of the Pro Hallstatt Classic. A unique climbing race. It isn't just one big climb to decide the winner but rather several attempts up the same climb with repetition being the deciding factor. The finish comes on top of a 3 km steep hill, which is sure to test the limits of the riders, having already tackled the six previous climbs. While climbing is the main skill, a powerful final punch is also important. Also this is the first year the race isn't in PTHC, so it'll be between the best PCT has to offer.
And oh boy the list of favourites is as deep as it gets:
| MO | HI | ST | RS | SP | AC | Padun | 82 | 77 | 72 | 74 | 60 | 75 | Novak | 80 | 77 | 74 | 76 | 65 | 76 | Guldhammer | 80 | 76 | 73 | 74 | 69 | 75 | Arndt | 79 | 76 | 77 | 76 | 71 | 75 | Madrazo | 83 | 74 | 78 | 77 | 61 | 69 | Haig | 82 | 74 | 76 | 75 | 61 | 73 | Monsalve | 80 | 75 | 78 | 79 | 64 | 72 | Oomen | 81 | 75 | 78 | 77 | 65 | 69 | Berhane | 81 | 75 | 77 | 74 | 62 | 68 | Sicard | 80 | 76 | 77 | 76 | 62 | 67 | Choi | 81 | 74 | 77 | 76 | 59 | 68 | Rodrigues | 80 | 73 | 73 | 75 | 61 | 72 | Quintana | 82 | 74 | 77 | 76 | 51 | 66 | Min | 79 | 76 | 75 | 77 | 62 | 66 | Cattaneo | 82 | 70 | 76 | 80 | 51 | 70 |
Padun was 7th last year, but he's arguably the pre race favourites this year with his improved 82 MO he has the best MO/HI combo. Novak is a slightly lesser climber, but an even more explosive finisher. Guldhammer is very similar. The fastest though might be Arndt and he proved himself in PTHC last year with a 5th place. Madrazo on the other hand is the strongest out and out climber, he'll be hoping for an attritional race. Same could be said for Haig.
The rest here are all quite similar. Monsalve is probably the 'fastest' with his MO/HI/AC combo. Oomen, Berhane, Choi, Quintana and Cattaneo are all top climbers, with the latter perhaps struggling more with only 70 HI. Which might lead to a chance to some better rounded outsiders.
| MO | HI | ST | RS | SP | AC | Mas | 78 | 77 | 74 | 74 | 60 | 77 | Frankiny | 78 | 76 | 72 | 75 | 61 | 75 | Pomoshnikov | 79 | 74 | 78 | 76 | 64 | 66 | Roson | 78 | 76 | 67 | 70 | 54 | 74 | Shikai | 81 | 71 | 74 | 76 | 57 | 67 | Reis | 81 | 73 | 78 | 76 | 50 | 64 | Ranaweera | 80 | 73 | 75 | 75 | 58 | 65 | Stüssi | 79 | 73 | 77 | 73 | 63 | 66 | Habtemichael | 78 | 74 | 74 | 73 | 59 | 66 | Elissonde | 78 | 73 | 76 | 77 | 55 | 66 | Carapaz | 80 | 71 | 71 | 76 | 56 | 65 | Garby | 79 | 70 | 71 | 76 | 52 | 70 | Kritskiy | 80 | 71 | 72 | 70 | 64 | 61 |
Mas is one of those riders. Not counting MO and SP he looks ideal for a race like this. Same with Frankiny who could form a good duo with Pomoshnikov. Roson is another punchy climber although his ST, RS and SP are all pretty low. He could have a premium helper in Kritskiy though. The rest of the riders are mostly diesel climbers and stage racers.

I really need Madrazo to step up here. Obviously some very tough competition and his low ACC stat and mediocre HIL could hurt him. But he has good support with 3 76+ climbers in the team and he is still the best pure climber, especially taking backup stats into account. Few flat stretches to hurt him, too. Top 3 has to be the goal, even if he's ranked a bit lower in the preview list.

Between Ranaweera's diesel and Arndt's finishing I am hopeful for a repeat of a top 5 here.
Thanks for the preview redordead.

Haig didn't really shine in Austria most recently - though still solid eventualy - so I hope he will do better in his next race here. Top-5 must be the goal, even though he may have to have a very good day to fight for the win/podium.

Perhaps not the ideal race for Cattaneo but I could not let him be two RD short

On one hand, I generally tried to avoid this type of race this year. The climber depth is just too much in PCT to count on anything, and Guldhammer is second tier at best after decline. On the other hand, Guldhammer has somehow been our only leader to lvie up to and perhaps exceed expectations this year. So we kind of need him to keep doing that.
The short distance and short, steep climbs generally play in our favor, but we could have used a flat finish to really make the most of his sprint and acceleration. Not even gonna try to set a goal here until we see how the race unfolds. We need something.

Have hopes that Mas can get a miracle result here but, realistically, we'd have to be happy with a Top 15!
Thank you for a great preview and looking forward to the race. Good luck all

Second - and final - HC classic for us. The competition is obviously massive, and both Stüssi and Mäder aren't the best suited rider to for this profile (missing Hi/Acc), but I'm still hoping to somehow get a Top 20 result.
Thanks for the preview!

Only classic foe Choi this season! The startlist is really strong and the profile isn't the most suitable, so not getting our hopes too high.
Thanks for the preview.

Not really a good result for us with Haig in 9th place and no other backup scorers.. Might have been our worst day (Tour of Norway, Hallstatt) of the season!

7th is decent for Choi given the startlist. Happy enough with and with the plethora of minor points scored by the other climbers.
Congrats to cunego and thanks for the report

10th isn't ideal, but it's perfeclty fine given the startlist and how the race unfolded. Can't complain about being one spot behind Haig and ahead of Padun. It all comes down to daily form in a race like this. It did look like the crowded field hurt Rasmus a little bit. He was out of position when the split happened and barely made it across, and then started the final climb in the back half of the group. I guess my support for him might have been lacking, but probably just a matter or chance when there are like 75 80+ climbers.
Congrats to Bralirwa on the dominant win. Sneaky ride by Kinoshita as well, good planning by Valv. And thanks for the report!
